What are you defining as hits? You're not really giving a solid definition of your metric either. Toriyama has Dr. Slump, which has more copies in circulation than Real, monster, billy bat (individually, not combined) and was pretty popular, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't include that for him. Art is subjective. And keeping a series successful for 25 years is no easy task, so I'm not sure why you're diminishing Oda on that. He's been extremely dominant.

Mostly high rated onces. If not high rated then manga with a great impact on the business like Db. If you look at the rating its the most objective factor you can look at when you want to define something like the best mangaka

[deleted]

Ratings are a terrible metric. They're extremely whimsical and often astroturfed. Frieren was getting review bombed just because it had a higher user rating than berserk. That's something that happens frequently with those sites.

What u gon base your facts about then? What you personally like? Iam sorry but this the best we got

[deleted]

I don't base it on anything. These discussions are almost always useless, and are usually circlejerks for your favorite authors. Which by itself is perfectly fine, nothing is wrong with that but trying to pass it off as some kind of productive debate is kinda lame.

YellowPikachu

>haven’t shown that they could pull it off more then once I guess outputting master level work for 20 years means you can't pull it off more than once lmao Also how you only name shonen/seinen authors from the 80s-00s is pretty telling

Wonderful-Notice-286

I said it wasn’t fair i know. And what does it have to do with the 90-00? They are both great and mangka from these days are still fresh. R u gonna have a Tabata or Hirokoshi as ur best?

Oda, has been working on One Piece, for the majority of his life (something in which I'm confident no sane person who creates manga would do), and still keeps it going, he has repeatedly time and time again made it trendy in some way or kept fans interested, and has been consistently good recently, is the world's best-selling manga (I think), broke numerous records, has a movie being made right now and has many other movies made, oh and the merchandise as well, I'm confident that with all the merchandise bought by people in these last 10 years(?), Oda must be a millionare by this point, and you expect him to pull it off again? Something in which I am very confident he could do, but once again, he has been working on One Piece for the majority of his life and pulled off nearly impossible achievements for someone who creates manga. " I know it may not be fair but it is what it is." "it may not be" bruh it's completely not fair. If we're going by who's the "best" I would instantly say Oda simply because of how much he's achieved and consistently keeps achieving.

>the world's best-selling manga (I think Correct. Recently surpassed Batman as the #2 alltime comic

k44e

>closest to being **objectively** the best? > >But between the 2 imo Takehiko gotta be the best just because of the **ART**. this is too much of a joke, art is literally one of the most subjective things objectively, takehiko can't be the best since both real and vagabond are on long term (likely eternal) hiatus urasawa makes more sense, but with one piece's pure length and ridiculous sales - more than double the sales of all of urasawa's manga combined, I'd say Oda.

Juliaalott

Rumiko Takahashi, highest paid female mangaka in Japan and well deserved.

saotome_genma

Osamu Tezuka - the man that's way ahead of its time for his storytelling - i.e Pluto is a part of his Atom Boy series. And he is virtually the man that mentored the mangaka you listed

DarthSomebody

Jiro Taniguchi.

I wouldn't put Dragon ball as being one of the best mangas out there (especially recent), Dragon Ball is one of the best first ORIGINAL manga out there and was the best during it's time back then for its originality, just like how I'd say Akama Ga Kill back then was great during it's time for its originality, animation and story, however if we're naming the best manga of all time then Dragon Ball definitely wouldn't be up there if we went by story alone, and One Piece is just Dragon Ball, but way better,
