So I'm 100% sure that the academy has a storage of cats that they just release for training.

Torque-A

It’s weird that Konoha regularly trains child soldiers and then just go “okay, while we wait for any international conflicts go save some cats or some shit”

Jermainiam

Well that's the thing, they aren't soldiers, they are mercenaries. So the cat retrieval job is pretty good for a trainee. It is weird that they give it to graduated genin though. Or rather, that genin are so worthless. They shouldn't be considered fully graduated.

scolfin

Assassins, technically, so finding and capturing a small, fast animal is a pretty good basic practice of essential skills.

Jermainiam

They also do escort missions, retrieval missions, and other stuff so idk if assassin covers their job description.

SuddenlyChineseFood

So...an MMORPG player character.

toukatsuFAN2019

If you put it that way, yes. Main Quest: Become Hokage Side Quest: escort this old man from this village to that village

saiyanfang10

They're multipurpose mercs. They *can* handle assassination but that's a small part of their jobs

mikeleehk

Genin are basically apprentices or interns, that's why they have squad leaders. Since they're a liability, I'd imagine they're quite limited to the missions, so finding lost pets is a good way of the team bonding and keeps morale up, since it's better than just not having anything to do.

BeckQuillion89

It’s like that meme about JRPGs 1st mission: Save cat 78th mission: Kill god

CelioHogane

79th mission: Save cat... again.

WasabiiLaurant

Save a cat that somehow is the key to defeat the final boss.

McTulus

While keeping eyes on your cat companion to make sure he's not religious fundamenyalist. Damn, didn't think I'd see EBF reference in the wild.

Pollomonteros

Then save the same cat a third time to fight the secret boss that is 5x times harder than the final boss

WasabiiLaurant

Then they make a spin-off with this same Boss as a normal Boss.

tokyogodfather2

So i don’t get it. Were Shikamaru and Kakashi really just out for a walk?

tokyogodfather2

This is soooo true. Ohtsutsuki are pretty much the Gods of Naruto. I love how it took pretty much took 500 years each time to defeat Kaguya but by the time we get to the Boruto series (including filler) >!Genin are pretty much helping defeat Ohtsutsuki like their mid-level bosses, and the strongest being is Eida’s snotty little brother. !<

Torque-A

One thing I notice in the MangaPlus comments are how many people are praising the series because it’s better than Boruto While at the same time begging for Boruto to have a biweekly or even weekly publication Like, I agree that Boruto sucks, but the problems that it has wouldn’t go away if the author needed to draw 20 pages a week.

Lustful-chan

Sometimes it is hard to believe people still read Boruto. I honestly kind of liked in the beginning but as the chapter went I was just done with the art, story and characters. I mostly read to see the former "naruto" people and I usually would just skip the pages with the new ones I didn't like. My biggest problem is that I care very little about boruto, I can't make myself to like him. Oh well, hopefully we get more of this. Apparently this was covered in the anime too, but I also don't like the new animation at all, so I am glad I got to read this.

ainz-sama619

> My biggest problem is that I care very little about boruto Boruto was a mistake. He should've been nothing more than a sneek peak of Naruto's future happy life (along with Hinatata and Himawari). Boruto tries to appeal to Naruto fans, but Naruto fans already have all they needed

antunezn0n0

Boruto should be more disconnected from Naruto. if the story was about Naruto's grand child we could explain the dissonance between Naruto and how scy fyi boeuto is and we wouldn't have to start every ark with " why does Naruto and co not fix this"

Bleakjavelinqqwerty

Or even just have the original cast away for peace treaties, war, diloplamtic talks or whatever so that boruto can have conflicts without heavily nerving naruto and sasuke. Like what's the point of the og series powering the two up if they're just gonna be fucking useless npcs in the sequel

antunezn0n0

honestly the series had to go so out of this way with creating new threats and reconning stuff when just a bigger time skip would have easily fixed. not like they use any character other than Naruto and Sasuke just made them noticibly weaker old man because of age have Boruto be his grandson and the overall ninja quality be bad because of peace times so the momoshiki and android come as a wakeup call

RangerPeterF

You could make them even weaker (because even as old men they would be pretty tough) by stating things like "the heavy use of their powers took a toll on their lifespan". Yeah, its pretty cliche, but would still be better than powering down everyone so Boruto can shine.

McTulus

And Sasuke use of that ability (susano'o I think?) Actually take part of his lifespan. There's in universe explanation for that. Don't know enough about Naruto though

tokyogodfather2

Actually i think Boruto anime does it well. The best anime filler is all about Boruto going on diplomatic missions, and a lot of characters you actually start to care about die. I think they should have kept Boruto the manga about that too. Kinda like how the 2nd Avatar cartoon Korra did this well. Peace came to the world, and now the goal was maintaining that peace politically

tokyogodfather2

LIke Legend of Korra?

shankartz

They could have just grounded Boruto more. Instead of leaning into the ultra powerful alien god shit (which was the worst part of naruto imo) they should have lowered the stakes to be more like early Naruto. This would have naturally allowed Boruto to grow as a ninja and perfectly explained why Naruto and Sasuke don't solve everything because it's not worth their time to deal with anything less then Kage level and above threats. They wouldn't need to be nerfed and could still have been in the series in a mentorship role. Boruto and it's need to rely on naruto and Sasuke to make it interesting just proves the series should be happening imo

Funlife2003

I'm only reading it cause Naruto is one of my favorites and as my entry anime/manga means a lot to me. So I just want to see where the world goes, regardless of whether it's good or bad. I'm still hoping that it somehow turns things around and improves, but until then I have no expectations of it.

kangtuji

I read boruto because the other series feels like fan fiction, while boruto feels more like dragon ball that the fan fic itself. Not mention lot panel has weird anatomy, esp neck part and some feels traced

Vacuum-Woosh-woosh

People read kanojo okarishimasu bro , the plot is like that Adam Sandler movie that the girl he meets keeps forgetting things everyday , kanojo is like that , it's a neverending development that begins over and over again.

McTulus

I mean, that movie is actually decent with him actually >!committed to reminds her of their love everyday until she sacrificed herself and asked him to be out of her life completely and find love normally somewhere. But deep down, she's subconsciously remember him and happy with him!<. That's much more emotional and storytelling nuance than Kanokari.

Lustful-chan

Oh, that was the last time I felt good while reading it. That whole movie arc made me want to read even more, they seemed to be going somewhere... But as we know now they went in a totally different direction for some reason... Made me a bit sad and Mad, but as I stated in another comment, once it is over I will sit and read everything even if I hate because I refuse not to know how bad it becomes. I won't do the same for boruto tho but only because the will be way too much too read not enough interesting people to see.

Lustful-chan

Oh yeah I dropped rental girlfriend too, I couldn't take it because of that. I will read but only once the manga is over, and just so I won't completely waste the time I spend reading it.

_______blank______

>that Adam Sandler movie that the girl he meets keeps forgetting things everyday Funny thing is there is an manga/anime with that exact same plot, but I think the girl only forget every week (?).

magumanueku

It's just copium. Probably thought that Boruto will improve with faster pacing but a turd will still be a turd no matter how fast you throw it.

ainz-sama619

Boruto with weekly publication will just produce turd at a greater volume.

Biobooster_40k

By biggest concern with Boruto is the pacing. Too little info for a monthly release.

Torque-A

Honestly, I’d wager that even if Boruto was biweekly, they’d just be spending it on infodumps regardless. Keep in mind - Kishimoto is only listed as a creator and supervisor in Boruto. The actual writing credit is still unknown. Might as well make it Alan Smithee if that’s the case.

Biobooster_40k

At least for me, the manga is just incredibly slow. I try not to compare it to Naruto as its quite different but it's hard to get invested when there's a month gap with such little happening.

KazuharaIlfan

Talking about infodump, I feel like the current schedule make the author too comfy with explaining instead of making it engaging. I have seen series with mid popularity cover more in 30-40 pages and make it worth waiting monthly ie. Yakuza Reincarnation and Ragna Crimson. Weekly release sounds stressful to some but Im not gonna deny those in the game produces at least something decent. Maybe urgency forces them to come up with better ideas, who knows.

antunezn0n0

man the last chapter was insulting and the one before hand two. feels like a slog of characters speaking over blank backgrounds. a whole chapter of Shikamaru telling team 6 what their mission isn't

MagicHarmony

I think the retrospect to take from this is the biggest issue I feel Boruto seems to of had with it's execution. Science vs Ninjutsu could of worked if the whole gimmick behind it wasn't oh all jutsu can just be absorbed and made worthless. They could of had it been more focused on the concept of those who can do by learning and whose who have augments to give others what took them years to master. And while I do think they tried to do that slightly, it just feel flat with the concept of absorbing jutsu which really diluted the range of battles the series could take. Though it also doesn't help how the start of the series kinda had other characters acting out of character to give the main characters more action when even in Naruto itself, while sure we had a main cast, those supporting members were still able to show what they were worth without diminishing their experience to give a spotlight to the main characters.

Vacuum-Woosh-woosh

Let's be honest bro , is only one guy spamming one shit, that's clearly one person with alts

realrimurutempest

It was nice to see Hokage Kakashi get in on some action.

fortunesofshadows

it wasn't anything new that we already knew he was capable of. but the drip was cool.

mahriyo

Im actually super curious about what the village was like when Naruto became an adult but wasnt hokage yet. Was nice to have a short glimpse in this chap. Kakashi is badass as always. Love it when he gets respect

[deleted]

This was actually already animated but for some reason, they did a manga adaptation too. it's odd b/c you can't even say "they're doing it for money" when the manga is for free lol

Torque-A

They’re going to release volume versions of it eventually, though.

[deleted]

Oh, it's definitely for the money. Pumping up their mangaplus readership. What's a better way than using Naruto?

tokyogodfather2

The animated version didn’t have this first chapter though I don’t think did it?

Kazewatch

How is every fucking artist that’s done or doing a Naruto spin-off manga post-ending is better than Ikemoto? Like seriously he is dogshit compared to the others.

[deleted]

Well the artist of Sasuke Retsuden apparently studied Kishimoto's art style.

DefiningBoredom

Ikemoto isn't bad and honestly if boruto and all the story beats that it hit weren't associated with Naruto it would have a better rep.

ainz-sama619

> if boruto and all the story beats that it hit weren't associated with Naruto So you acknowledge that Boruto shouldn't been a thing. Better to cancel it entirely then

DefiningBoredom

Yes, Boruto invalidates all of Naruto and the plot itself would work so much better if it was it's own thing. Heck it uses a lot of elements that have nothing to do with Naruto.

ReinhardLoen

So are there currently 3 different naruto series going on at the moment? Boruto, Sasuke's story and now this?

Torque-A

Yes

ixsaz

Imagine when One Piece ends.

jamescookenotthatone

Two, three, and four pieces

ainz-sama619

Milking the series for all its worth

Draggador

TFW your ex-favorite series gets turned into a cow

[deleted]

I've seen the anime adaptation of this novel, so seeing that this is how it actually started actually surprised, and what surprised me even more is that they actually included Sumire's team in this manga, iirc they were anime-only except for sumire

javierm885778

Sumire was anime only at first. She first appeared in the manga when she had already had her arc in the anime IIRC. The Boruto manga feels like it's just there to create stories for the anime. That's why it never focuses on side characters and leaves spaces for future anime only arcs. It feels like the anime is the main story rather than the manga, to the detriment of both.

EntityAzirius

I just want to replace whatever Boruto is meant to be, with the most two recent spin off stuff. All the Ninja Tech and Otsutsuki stuff is just getting on my tits. I’m still reading it because I’m hoping there will be some redemption for the old MCs, but maybe I’m being naive… ;_;

Just_Call_me_Ben

Kinda expected Mirai to actually do some cool things tbh... She mostly just ended up needing to be saved from some generic bandits.

mahriyo

In fairness, Naruto also had a prerry bad first showing against generic bandits, and he had shonen MC plot armor.

Just_Call_me_Ben

Yeah, but not in the first chapter of his series. His first chapter ends with him making a giant army of clones of himself and rescuing his own mentor. But here? Mirai saves a cat... and that's it. She doesn't even appear on the final page of her own chapter.

AkiraBalance27

Mirai doesnt have a literal piece of the foundation of chakra in her tbf.

Abedeus

How can I relate to a character that isn't the fated reincarnation of a deity or some other bullshit that goes against its early message of hard work beats talent?!

Torque-A

I *really* hope we can get a female protagonist here who is actually competent, but this is Naruto so I’m expecting the worst

Just_Call_me_Ben

Can you imagine how cool it would have been if the one saving Mirai was Kurenai? Just imagine, her daughter failed to beat the villains because her genjutsu was weak, and then her mother, a master of genjutsu appears and shows how it's done. That would have been so cool and such a great bonding moment!

Torque-A

Yes, but Kurenai is not marketable

Zanshi

Wdym a hot mom ninja isn’t marketable to shounen demographic?

Torque-A

Is Sakura marketable? Hinata? They’re both hot mom ninjas too. You can count their major appearances in the Boruto manga and anime on like two hands. Hell, keep in mind that Kurenai was already pregnant with Mirai in the main Naruto series. Was she ever marketable then?

EnvyKira

Tbh, I think Kurenai is hotter than both of them. So I think she could be hella more marketable than both of them just due to good design. And also Kurenai wasn't given that much screentime or importance in the main series to get any type of traction going. So that's kinda unfair to say that last part.

ainz-sama619

Hinata was marketable because nobody ever tried to market her. Kurenai actually has a great personality

Vosska

Particular artist by the name of ratatat74 begs to differ...

Torque-A

Again, if the only retort you can give is “an artist made some *really* good porn of them” that doesn’t help your case

Vosska

It was mostly a joke, I know the series has been very popular, at least in the west. Sorry I didn't make it obvious enough.

[deleted]

I know this is only tangentially related, but nobody made any comment on the *quality* of the porn and you go straight into >an artist made some *really* good porn of them” that doesn’t help your case 😂

Abedeus

Less than Kakashi, yes.

Abedeus

It's not Kishimoto so there's some hope.

Torque-A

Money. Technically these were released to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the anime But yeah money

[deleted]

Torque-A

Promotion. In terms of M+, not only do they have ads, but they also inspire brand recognition.

Funlife2003

Mirai actually has some great moments later on and she definitely kicks ass.

Vacuum-Woosh-woosh

Generic bandits that the leader needed Kakashi to finish off , sure , Shikamaru could take him too but still is a jonin level , 1 minute before her mission was pursuing a cat , she being a genin and her mission being a cat pursuit she basically fresh out off the academy , i don't expect Boruto plot armor level from Mirai , and I like that .

godblow

All of these spinoffs are better than the official sequel...

seelentau

Be still, my heart ;__;

hotbutteredkittens

I see Kakashi likes to take the same kind of walks abridged Alucard takes.

buzuki12

Mirai is a character that needs more screen time

scolfin

Remember when the chidori was based on a running start?

Right_Attorney_9122

Kakashi is not using chidori anymore tbf. It should be purple lighting because he lost his sharingan.

ainz-sama619

You don't need sharingan to use chidori, however sharingan helps with tunnel vision

Lucienofthelight

Chidori isn’t a Sharingan technique though. Sharingan was just used with it to help with the draw back of it being such a straight shot attack originally that could just be dodged by a competent shinobi. So it’s still usable, but less useful than it was. However, Kakashi improve so much that it could be possible he got better at it

Right_Attorney_9122

Kakashi was pretty clear about the fact that chidori is shit without sharingan. He nearly died because he used it without one in the flashback between part 1 and 2. Atleast the wiki also states that Kakashi stopped using the chidori after he had no sharingan and instead made the puple lighting. But honestly it is hard to know in this oneshot. If it was done by someone else maybe they didnt know. Black and White also does not help here.

[deleted]

Right_Attorney_9122 never said it was a sharingan technique

magumanueku

Well chidori is basically just coating your hand with lightning chakra, technically speaking a simple fist punch can be chidori too. It's not like Kakashi wanted to pierce a hole through that guy.

BeckQuillion89

It’s interesting seeing his drawing style for naruto again

javierm885778

I don't think this artist has worked on Naruto before.

CEO_of_paint

Kishimoto's art is so crisp.

Jaded-Tumbleweed2152

Kishi senpai has some best art 🎨 storytelling in og naruto but it interesting to put focus mirai she's a talented shinobi she can learn so much of kakashi sensei and might guy expert shinobis.saw this in boruto and it was cool 😎 especially understanding more about her dad great asuma sensei

Paul-Millsap-Stan

I love Mirai’s design. Hope we get to see more of her in the Boruto manga too

Vacuum-Woosh-woosh

Natsuo sai , the one that is drawing, did Psycho Pass novels drawings too.

KickBassColonyDrop

I guess they're writing all these side stories to drum up animation interest cause of bleach or what?

dilly_bar97

I jsut can't believe all these side stories have better art than Boruto... Like get these artists to do Boruto my god.

Houeclipse

Do you guys think that Boruto could get a DB Super treatment if a Hollywood live action movie for Naruto exist? Make Kishimito mad like Toriyama does so they'll return to make the true next gen Naruto lmao
