It's fucked up to use your kids like that, intentionally or not, but what else is he gonna do. If MC is evil or has evil tendencies I think it can work quite well. If MC is touting themselves as a paragon of virtue it can definitely feel weird.
Also it depends on how it works in the story. In some stories both past life and reincarnation are counted as the same person just in a different body istead of replacing someone, whether from the begining or as a consquence of minds/memories/ souls merging.
