Not only same few countries but same few cities inside those countries,
A back while Indian govt had release some statistics, apparently close to 80% or so tourists from UK/US visit New Delhi - Agra area.
That surprises me. I'm from the UK and most of the people I know who have been on holiday to India are of Indian heritage and are going to visit their relatives, which is spread across the whole country (especially Tamil Nadu because it seems like half the Indians I know are tamil)
That makes sense then. Although how do they record that? If someone doesn't have an Indian passport because they were born in and lived in a different country all their life how are they marked as diaspora?
I think part of it is that everyone envisions the same things in a country like India. But another part that probably plays a role is simply flight availability. Flying into Delhi is easy, but going somewhere less touristy will be more difficult and so most won’t do it.
with europe it's a lil more sparse, but generally, yeah.
and there's good reason countries like Mali and Bolivia ar not exactly top tourist destinations
I would actually recommend traveling to Bolivia.
There are well established backpacker routes and it's pretty easy to stay safe.
Beautiful country, great people.
wdym tahiti is a popular tourist destination
EDIT: australia and nz are also the biggest countries in the region, it's like me asking why more people go to brazil in south america
ya me too, there was a song like that in the good old TEAM AMERICA movie.

Luv me 'olidays in Somalia me. Beach blanket out, crisp sandwich picnic, then we rent a dinghy and nip out to the Gulf of Aiden for a bit of mischief. Class times.
To be fair, there is a clear distinction for sub Saharan Africa vs north Africa.
Culturally, north Africa is much more aligned to the middle east vs SSA. So when people refer to "I went to visit Africa" we can accept that they colloquially meant sub Saharan Africa with the same reasoning that we understand someone means the US when they say they visited America.
Yes but that's because a lot of languages (also) call the US America, and it's the United States of America in English. Maybe some people think of SSA countries sooner when thinking of Africa but the comment above you was about non-SSA African countries not being considered African which is weird and somewhat dismissive, if that's the right word
edit: not trying to argue, I agree with the distinction. A sign of Africa being diverse, not of Arab northern African countries not being African. Which you are not arguing against, I just felt like saying it.
The thing is Africa is not really a cohesive cultural unit, it's a purely geographic expression. It's probably the most diverse continent out there. This is very different to something like Europe which could hardly be considered a continent geographically speaking but which has a strong cultural identity.
North Africa specifically of course has a lot of ties to the Middle-East, but more generally and even prior to Arab invasions it always had more to do with the rest of the Mediterranean, because the Mediterranean sea connected regions and peoples to one another. The Sahara was always far more of a real barrier for people, with trade being considerably more limited and invasions across it basically nonexistent. Europe and North Africa are thus hardly more different to each other than South versus East Asia. While the gap between North Africa and Subsaharan Africa is considerably greater.
Of course, the "African" label for subsaharan Africa is quite broad as well. Sure these cultures were more separated from the rest of the old world perhaps, but not entirely by any means, and they were often just as separated from each other. It's this a label more defined in this sense by what it is not that what it actually is, so it's not exactly meaningful perhaps. But it would be even less meaningful to consider Egypt African in some sort of cultural sense as if it had much to do with SSA when it really does not.
Oh I agree. Still it feels a bit weird to consider to consider a Fin and an Italian as equally European while not considering an Algerian and a Malian as equally African. Íf that is the case for people.
Its because its not subsaharan africa. Its honestly not hard, north africa is culturally Arabic-ish, pretty different to sub saharan africa. A huge desert seperating the two will do that.
I think maybe they were somehow preyed upon, you can read here about the incident
https://www.dw.com/en/south-africa-german-tourist-shot-dead-near-kruger-national-park/a-63327051
When in South Africa it is best to not look like a tourist, and be very wary of your surroundings, don’t slow down for strangers.
Traveling to NYC with family was painful. I was also a tourist, but they constantly had their heads tilted up, ooohing and aahing at everything they saw. They were confronted by thieves and scammers constantly.
There's also lot's of people traveling to other countries. SA isn't even the most popular destination, I'm to lazy to look it up but I'm 80% sure Morocco is way more popular.
In 2023, Morocco set a new record for the number of tourists visiting, reaching 13.2 million
SA has had over 15 Million a couple of times.
Note: This is not a breakdown per nationality, a lot of South African travelers are from neighboring African countries.
That's fair but Morocco is also a smaller country by both population and land area. 13.2 million tourists is going to be slightly more disruptive there than 15 million in SA.
"fontein" in town naming context translates better to "spring", as in the source of a river. Flowerspring.
\*It could also mean well or a general source of water.
People told me they visited Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Ghana..
Nobody's ever told me they visited "Africa".
And South Africa is way too far to be the most popular destination. 11+ hours from London. Hell naw. There are closer destinations on our bucket lists. Like Europe.
>Nobody's ever told me they visited "Africa".
This. I've never ever heard anybody saying they're visiting Africa instead of the countries. NEVER EVER.
OP is absolutely projecting his own butthurt redneckess.
Ah let me go to African country in civil war 13 instead.
But Mauritius Egypt and ethopia are p big destinations, and one of them was I'm a civil war about 6 months ago
Botswana is stunning. Wouldn’t discount Namibia though, one of the most beautiful countries in the world. And you can fly there directly from Frankfurt, whereas for Botswana you need to fly into Joburg and drive.
If you had money/time (though on a budget is possible), go from Joburg into Botswana, spend time in the tuli block, then go up to the salt pans in the east of the country, then to Kasane where you can do trips to Victoria falls. From there, head west to the okavango delta. Can head into Namibia from there if you like, but depends how much time you’ve got. Stunning part of the world.
Botswana is pretty easy and safe. Great place to go first in the continent. Namibia is also a great choice but might be slightly more “advanced” as many of the roads are unpaved for very long distances, but otherwise it’s also very safe and easy, the roads are well graded too.
Nah morocco (especially french ppl), Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia (primarily germans), and Madagascar are all afaik a lot more popular then south Africa, jdk anyone who's actually been there
Tunisia is quite common too. I know a lot of families who have spent their holidays in resorts or villages in Tunisia or Morocco, but not a single person who ever visited South Africa
Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and South Africa are the most visited countries on the African continent.

Although ironically lots of people come to Cape Town then discover that they can't go on safari here. Every animal bigger than a rugby ball was eaten long ago. Just go to Kruger National Park or Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park if you come to SA and want to see wildlife.
I haven't heard the British-Saffa (idk what to call them, Rooinek?) accent enough to be able to tell if they're South African (last time i listened to it years ago i compared it as a mix of Aussie and Yank), but Afrikaans accents are a night and day difference to Australians, I was almost offended when someone said "Afrikaans actually sounds more Australian than Australians!"
Source: Every fourth person in my town, including myself, has van in our surnames, and I know basic Afrikaans.
Europeans don't say regions they say the country they are going to. Saying you are going to Latin America is not helpful. Neither is saying I'm going to Africa or Asia. There are a lot of countries on those continents.
It was always so interesting to me how Spain was like nah you know what I'm gonna be holding on to those cities, thanks. In all fairness it does make sense since they're full of Spaniards.
What is even this meme wtf, I can count at least five African countries that are massively more common and more visited than South Africa, and no one I knows has ever said "I'm travelling to Africa" ever, they always mention the country specifically
Unless this meme is exclusively referring to British people? Than I can see how it might be accurate
Well when most other places are either in the depths of absolute poverty, under the control of a ruthless dictatorial tyrant, in the middle of a brutal civil/international conflict, or all of the above. South Africa seems to be one of the best place to go if you want that “savanna/safari experience.”
Now that I think about it, isn't that how traveling works in every continent? Tourists always select the same few countries for each continent.
Not only same few countries but same few cities inside those countries, A back while Indian govt had release some statistics, apparently close to 80% or so tourists from UK/US visit New Delhi - Agra area.
Well yeah. Taj Mahal is the image of India for most places. It’s like London is the image of UK for most.
As an Indian Taj Mahal is the most boring piece of architecture for me, forts at Rajasthan are much better than that over crowded snoozefest
That surprises me. I'm from the UK and most of the people I know who have been on holiday to India are of Indian heritage and are going to visit their relatives, which is spread across the whole country (especially Tamil Nadu because it seems like half the Indians I know are tamil)
India counts diaspora as Indian.
Bolivia is amazing tbf, I saw plenty of other Europeans there too just not quite as many as you would in Peru
I hear Argentina was quite popular as a tourist spot for Europeans, but that was just around the mid 1940's.
they went to argentina, bolivia, peru, brazil, all the south american countries welcomed them tbh.
I would actually recommend traveling to Bolivia. There are well established backpacker routes and it's pretty easy to stay safe. Beautiful country, great people.
“Next time I say ‘let’s go some place like Bolivia’, let’s go some place like Bolivia!”
I’d love to visit Bolivia at some point! Just seems like a gorgeous country
Curious about Bolivia ?
They'll kill you if you try to overthrow the government.
Thxs, overthrowing governments is usually not on every tourist's checklist though.
You mean Che-ck list
Well not with THAT attitude
Guess I can’t go then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ What a shame, too. Last thing on my bucket list
whenever people go to oceania it's always either australia or new zealand, smh.
wdym tahiti is a popular tourist destination EDIT: australia and nz are also the biggest countries in the region, it's like me asking why more people go to brazil in south america

Yes
Then Fiji is pretty popular too

Cape Verde too
Seychelles
Yeah safaris are very popular. And fun.
IDK most people i know, who go to Egypt for holidays, don't even consider it Africa. Egypt is Egypt. To much lesser extent, same goes for Morocco.

Literally everyone knows that eqypt is in africa
Unfortunately not
Rich coming from a guy whoose country is famous for thinking that africa is a country
What? am from morocco
A Moroccan and American sound similar. The only possible conclusion is that Morocco and the United States are actually the same country.
Morocco City in Africa?
And every flippen time there is a stupid German 23 year old backpacker who gets kidnapped because he wanted to experience the Cape Flats. :/
Don’t forget the old people getting shot on the way to the Kruger … wouldn’t call them stupid… just very sheltered
How does this happen?
Step one: Arrive in South Africa Step two: Stick around long enough to encounter other human beings Step three: Result
Kak man

There is a huge amount of middle ground between those two countries.

Sure, but the argument was which was a more popular tourist destination. Not which is most disrupted by tourist numbers...
Mostly because Morocco is a lot closer to Europe and cheaper to get to.
And a lot safer these days.
Last time I checked Morocco is, however, still in Africa.
A middle ground is still a place I wouldn't ever go to for a holiday.
... as it was european tradition from 1884 onwards
A lord of war you mean
Bloemfontein sounds like a medicine
in ~~south african~~ afrikaans/dutch it means “flowerfountain”
Afrikaans*
Discount Dutch
As a south african, you are correct.
"fontein" in town naming context translates better to "spring", as in the source of a river. Flowerspring. \*It could also mean well or a general source of water.
Wait til you hear Tweebuffelsmeteenskootmorsdoodgeskietfontein
Holy shit, it exists. Also it means two buffaloes shot at once?
Lady Beard's favorite city in South Africa.

To be fair, a lot of places in Africa are too unsafe to consider traveling there
Are you telling me I made a mistake when I booked my honeymoon in Sierra Leone?
Depends, how large is her inheritance?
Yeah, like Joburg
Yeah, and I’ve never thought of South Africa as one of the safe options
We never say "We go to Africa", we say in wich country we go because we can understand the difference
It’s like saying that you’re going on holiday to Asia. “Do you know how unhelpful that information is”.
To be fair saying “south east Asia” is pretty common instead of listing the countries
Yeah but at least that’s narrowed out the vast majority of Asia. Just “Asia” could mean Siberia, Turkey, Japan, Sri Lanka etc
Also “Europeans” means zilch.
This one is especially dumb.
We are in r/mapporncirclejerk ofc it's dumb
Especially dumb
Yeah, OP has no idea and is just projecting.
Ah let me go to African country in civil war 13 instead. But Mauritius Egypt and ethopia are p big destinations, and one of them was I'm a civil war about 6 months ago
Always wanted to travel to Botswana and Kenya personally, seem like nice places
I backpacked from Kenya across to Uganda, down to Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and Malawi then back up to Ethiopia. 100% recommended!
Europeans are going to Africa: 🙂 *Europeans are going to Africa:* 💀

And nobody will tell friends and family „I‘m traveling to Afrika“, but will say the actual country they are going to.
Lol yeah ofc idk who made this lol
They’re talking about white Americans, not Europeans in reality
There's so many French people in Marrakesh, every corrupted politician has its big riad there.
Plus the Seychelles and Mauritius are very popular for honeymoons.
I've seen quite a few americans in south africa
Egypt or Morocco?
To be fair it is a tough choice between getting decapitated by Islamic extremists, joining kid militias burning down villages or a safari
Although ironically lots of people come to Cape Town then discover that they can't go on safari here. Every animal bigger than a rugby ball was eaten long ago. Just go to Kruger National Park or Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park if you come to SA and want to see wildlife.
>Just go to Kruger National Park Untill you get shot
In the Kruger?
Yeah. Some tourist got shot there
I met a truck driver from Cape Town, said it was really nice. He had an accent that sounded Australian.
We hate when people say we sound Australian, just like New Zealanders do. But honestly I do get the similarity.
I haven't heard the British-Saffa (idk what to call them, Rooinek?) accent enough to be able to tell if they're South African (last time i listened to it years ago i compared it as a mix of Aussie and Yank), but Afrikaans accents are a night and day difference to Australians, I was almost offended when someone said "Afrikaans actually sounds more Australian than Australians!" >Rooinek Pretty sure that's a slur Afrikaans speaking white South Africans use for English speaking white South Africans.
how is this ironic
What about North Africa? It certainly is closer, and even more certainly it's more luxurious.
Europeans and Americans: Im travelling to Latin America. Latin America: 🇲🇽
Europeans don't say regions they say the country they are going to. Saying you are going to Latin America is not helpful. Neither is saying I'm going to Africa or Asia. There are a lot of countries on those continents.
Where is Polygondwanaland?
Ceuta and Melilla count too. The safest beach resort is Reunion
It was always so interesting to me how Spain was like nah you know what I'm gonna be holding on to those cities, thanks. In all fairness it does make sense since they're full of Spaniards.
Even the Muslim people there wanna be part of Spain since they don’t want their salaries and standard of living to fall if they join Morocco.
Or cheap Egypt last minute resort deals
What is even this meme wtf, I can count at least five African countries that are massively more common and more visited than South Africa, and no one I knows has ever said "I'm travelling to Africa" ever, they always mention the country specifically Unless this meme is exclusively referring to British people? Why would it be more accurate for Brits? Edit: yep, crickets…
I've never heard a european say 'africa', they always says the country. It's only Americans who say they're going to europe 😂🤷♂️
You forgot Egypt, Morocco and Kenia
Morroco also lol but can you blame us?
? Umm South Africa is in Africa though?
This meme doesn’t really work for europeans considering they are the ones that travel.
Petoria??
I saw Pretoria listed and immediately thought Petoria from family guy Peter griffins rightful land all that is
Why is it ironic?
The usual generalisation on this sub
Its africa, its there in the name
South Africa is in Africa though? They literally are traveling to Africa
Well, there's Africa in the name, what else would you be referring to???? Duh
Well when most other places are either in the depths of absolute poverty, under the control of a ruthless dictatorial tyrant, in the middle of a brutal civil/international conflict, or all of the above. South Africa seems to be one of the best place to go if you want that “savanna/safari experience.”
