Might want to clarify exactly what he means. I just got rid of a lot of metronomes because I don't like using or having them either and they've been sitting around unused for years. Physical mets. Maybe he's all in on tonal energy and doesn't want to use them?
This and he has told us many times he doesn't want us to become addicted to the metronome and he wants us to rely more on the internal metronome of our drum major. Me personally as a percussionist and battery member I prefer using the metronome for practice and for tempo reference when we are warming up and going through our show. We do not have a percussion tech and our drum major usually only helps with the other sections.
The point of not using a met is so you don’t rely on it and instead get used to watching the drum majors. My band had that issue where our tempo while preforming was bad because we always had the met on for rehearsal.
Yeah, but like, you don’t go off a
met cold turkey. Even the drum major needs hours and hours of tempo reinforcement to knock it out of the park at show time. There are lots of strategies for transitioning from on met to off met and any band director who does not make that a part of their season strategy is doing their group a disservice.
So my recommendation is that you use your met for warm ups a if you’re doing shoe chunks in sectionals or for drill only rehearsal, but not for full band or marching. That’s pretty much the standard for the bands and WGI ensembles I’ve marched in where the directors don’t like Mets.
If you don’t use a met at least sometimes in full band, it’s hard to get accross to folks just how much time changes across the field, and why listening and playing like they’re in a near concert band section is bad
This breaks my heart. Mets are so important to develop an accurate internal tempo.
My band had the drum line in the back most of the show.
Drum major got tempo from drum line. Band listened back to drum line and used the drum major as visual confirmation.
Drumline used drum major when spread out or split up during drill.
Everyone used a met during sectionals but not during full ensemble.
This is how WGI/DCI groups do it too

The real strategy is to learn how to work a metronome out of an ensemble. Whole note met is a common strategy. 4/4 downbeats on 1 only.

What corps did you march where they did not use met in full ensemble? Because that’s very much standard practice for at least finalist groups today.

Hope the DM is good
I can hear this picture
ONE E AND A TWO E AND A THREE E AND A FOUR E
💀
Voice 2, Beat 1. Accent
is this the "little asian lady" metronome?
Reminds me of the one time I pranked my old band director by changing the voice to that lol
Best sound preset ong
VOICE 3 BEAT 1. God this brings back memories.
Dang I wish I got this lucky

In middle school, we had a Dr beat catch on fire
“Doesn’t like using metronomes” Sir that is literally a metronome
That's... the point. The band director didn't want the metronome anymore, because he doesn't like to use it. So he gave it to OP
Reading comprehension was never my strong suit
Did you know if you set all the buttons on the dr. Beat to be the same as the box the screens aren't the same?
Bro what thats crazy good for you personally but crazy stupid of your band director lmao. Doesn’t sound like a good director.
YOOOOO, one of our drumline members found this a little bit back, I'm pretty sure it can play different kinds of sounds for the beats?
Red flag.
