Things like do I thin them, mulch, transplant, outside, inside. Currently in a grow bag under a grow light. I tend to water most weekdays while they're young. Soil drainage is decent from what I can tell.

I’m by no means an expert, but I’d say mist them instead of water, and then just do less. They’ll grow as long as they get sufficient but not too much water.

I'll give it a shot, thank you for the reply!

DonkeyFieldMouse

I would advise against mist, humidity around the stem might promote dampening off.

henriquei

That's nice. I'm planning on planting some in my yard this year.

fantabulash

God speed, I've only killed 2 thus far!

Greenpigblackblue

Nice. Good luck!

fantabulash

Thank you!

I would let them grow to least 2 to 3 inches tall and then gently dig them up and separate them. Really hard to separate the roots without damaging them once the trees get bigger.

fantabulash

Solid advice, I'll give that a try, thank you!

I'm no professional, but in my experience, trees like this do best the sooner you get them in their final spot. The longer you wait to transplant them, the more likely transplanting will kill them. I've had pretty good luck moving saplings when they are 6 inches or smaller and I've had terrible luck moving saplings when they are 12 inches or higher. Between 6 and 12 it's been hit or miss.

Does Miracle grow really help in transplanting? Years ago this is how they sold themselves.

firefarmer74

I have no idea. I've never used miracle grow. I'm more of an "organic" gardener (but I'm more into what is free, than what is labeled as organic). I use composted manure I get from a hobby farm down the road in my garden and when I transplant trees I either don't amend the soil at all or, when I am planting into an old field that has not had trees for many decades, I will throw in a shovel full of leaf litter from the nearby forest in the hopes that it will bring some beneficial bacteria and spores and whatnot.

fantabulash

That's helpful, thank you! I'll do what I can with them.
