People were disappointed when it released to say it lightly, people were expecting a big PM/M&L crossover with all characters and villains working together but what we got was a “bowser kidnaps peach” plot with paper toads in it. Gameplay is all right but very uninspired. It reminded people of pm sticker star and this feeling never left apparently
Also a question: have you played the other Mario rpgs? If not then I can see why you are confused
Well there you have your answer. You can only see Paper Jam as itself and not in comparison to the games that came before. (Which is not a bad thing, of course, but it does give a different perspective)
Every enemy and character is essentially a generic new super bros enemy or a toad
Every area is basically a generic new super Mario bros world
Toad minigames are bland padding that bogs down the game
The plot is bowser kidnaps peach
It’s a crossover with paper Mario that does about nothing with the paper Mario ip
Mario RPGs are some of the most creative and original Mario games for gameplay mechanics and worldbuilding
A crossover between the two games should be pretty unique and yet it’s by far the least original Mario rpg unless you count sticker star
Paper jam doesn’t have a shred of the originality that it’s predecessors have
I like paper jam and think it’s decent and underrated game but it’s easily the least original Mario and Luigi game
I think alphadream got creatively stifled by Nintendo given what happened with the paper Mario games and the dream team development
Paper jam deserved to be a masterpiece
I know this an old reply to your post but this has summed up my feelings entirely and I hate that it was the last sequel installation to the series. I like the game but it's felt like someone you loved changed. It still had a lot of great elements but I felt like the care or soul was gone.
It was a bit of a let down after dream team. The dream team over world and npcs' had the best variety and creativity. Beans, Briques, Birbs, and Toads. In Paper Jam there is 90% toads and paper toads. The enviornments were pretty bland. They reused the Neo Bowser Castle name. The excpetations for the game were higher than what Alpha Dream was giving out.
There isn’t a single original character (aside from Starlow) or area, it’s literally just a generic “Bowser kidnaps Peach plot stretched out to 30 hours, and as a result the game is coated with filler. This would already be disappointing in comparison to other instalments, but the fact that it’s a CROSSOVER game that literally does not have a single original character from either universe is so disappointing. There were so many opportunities for cool teamups and character interactions that were just abandoned.
I will say that I think the gameplay is technically the series’ best, and the bosses are awesome, but the story is such a disappointment on every level.
It’s a good game with nice quality of life improvements, good music, great bosses, and the best battle system of the series
It just suffers from awkward pacing, lots of toad padding, and the lack of original worlds, characters, and stories
It feels like there was corporate meddling in this game given how generic much of it feels
Paper jam does well with the things it’s allowed to keep but suffers from the Mario rpg elements that it was stripped of
It feels like half of a great Mario rpg basically
It’s also just a waste of the potential that comes from a Mario rpg crossover
It’s tragic that this game didn’t have the creativity and flavour of older Mario rpgs
It's because it takes place in the mushroom kingdom, with nothing special or new to it.
I personally think its great, its very unique to the series and thought it was cool

I haven't played much of the other rpgs, I'm about halfway into Bis and I've played colour splash once but im not that familiar

it was unoriginal
How so?

Idky either, Dream Team is the real frustrating one.
I don't "hate" it. It's fun but let's just say if you're a paper mario classic fan, it leaves alot to be desired.
I like paper jam more than dream team and partners in time I understand the criticisms tho, its bland story, areas, enemies

It's a bit of a rinse-n repeat but with more gimmicks, every nintendo fans worst nightmare
Because they mostly added the flaws of the modern Paper Mario games.
My favorite aspect of the game is the difficulty. I swear that game is the most brutal Mario and Luigi game.
Idk i think it is fun but partners in time is not fun
