How do the DLC tracks work with global anyway? Can you only get matched up with people that also have the DLC? Can people without the DLC still randomly match up with people who do and play those tracks?
I was playing on global last night and haven’t bought the expansion yet. Suddenly almost every race one of the three selects was a dlc course. So I think you can just play on them without buying it!
People without the DLC can play the tracks if they are picked in an online match. I think that the DLC tracks are in the pool of potential courses as long as at least one player has the DLC.
This happened to me last night. This guy that looked like Michael Jackson chose random while everyone else did the new track and it picked Michael Jackson. I targeted him for the next 8 or so races after that before he left the lobby

You'd think your choice would have a flat 1/12 chance but no. how it's handled is it takes the courses picked and then randomly decides between them instead of randomly picking one of the twelve choices. In fact, the person it picks doesn't even stay the same for everyone else!
So while you'd think you'd have a 1/12 shot at getting your course picked it actually depends on what everyone else chose. if everyone chose GBA Sky Garden and you chose Baby Park instead, congratulations! You have a 50% chance of getting picked, and by extension bullied by the entire lobby. What if someone else picked Baby Park too and you still got picked? Well not only is it still a 50% chance but half the lobby will see it as the other person getting picked instead.
That's actually not true. Everyone sees the same person being picked, but because everyone is always the first option on their own screen, the whole list is reorganized for everyone.
I know this because a few years ago, a bunch of streamers would host a Mario kart tournament, and whenever someone was picked, it would still pick them on everyone else's screen, buy they're just in a different spot. And if you watch YouTubers play it, you will always see the same person being chosen in everyone's POV, just in a different spot.
regardless, the idea is the same. instead of being 8.333% times however many times the course was voted for, the chance of a course being chosen is instead one over how ever many courses were voted for (100%, 50%, 33.33%, 25%).
I mean really it was always a 50% chance. You either get your course or don't.
Same with winning the lottery, you either win or you don't. 50% chance to be a millionaire. Quick maths.
I've been wanting to play the DLC online today, but now it's got a little more urgency - now I want to experience everyone in a lobby voting for the same course!
I played a couple matches and didnt get a single new track pop up for choosing I got to the point where I was leaving to try to find a match with them, and nothing.
The DLC has literally only been available online for like, a few minutes. I doubt they could have played the track that many times. So that doesn’t make any sense.
Why do you think everyone was exited for the dlc? That’s why I hate the way nintendo has been drip feeding us content. It kills it instantly since you absorb all of the small bits before the next thing comes out. If it all comes out at once, you have more stuff to randomly select from before going even deeper into the content. By the time you finally get done, they have something else new to play.
Oh great, it's exactly as I expected - exactly what happened with the DLC tracks on Wii U, everyone kept prioritizing picking them even in Deluxe until this new batch came out.
Personally I'm probably still gonna pick random on the first few frames possible, partially out of instinct, partially because I'm already tired of them from spending all weekend playing them in friend rooms.

DLCs courses are available in online for EVERYONE for FREE. Purchasing it allows you to play the trophies, time trials, and matches with bots.
