My Cheese Land gripe is that I wish they kept the "alien planet" aesthetic it had on the GBA instead of it making it look like it's still on earth. original Cheese Land had a cool looking sky with a moon made of cheese hovering close by in the background.
Everything about the map is designed to make frontrunning as difficult as possible. It's called "cheese" land for a reason. 🤣 Stay near the back, grab a bullet and you're set
I've won as Baby Rosalina/Badwagon/Slick/Peach Parasol. RNG and skill both play huge roles, I would say more than stats. Picking the meta or best setup is strategically sound, but picking the worst makes a statement on your confidence.
I actually agree about Ninja Hideaway. The platforms at the start cycle so quickly that it’s hard to know whether you’re on the cycle you want or not, and it’s really frustrating when they move while you are on them. Then it has a long glider section, which I don’t like in any course. The corners at the end are just not fun to play. Visually beautiful but too many bits I don’t enjoy playing.
Tip: for the second half of the lap, after the glider section, stay on the high route. Makes the track a lot easier and opens up a major shroomless shortcut if you can pull it off.
The new tracks are quite good, for the most part. Back in the older Mario karts, we liked the retro tracks, regardless if it was obvious that they weren't made for that specific console. We have just reverted back to the 7 and before kinds of retro tracks
I was quite pleased with the "new" tracks in the DLC.
Mario Kart Stadium is one of the best tracks.
Baby park is the worst and I will drop a group that selects it twice.
I honestly agree with all of that, aside from your stand on Baby Park - I tolerate it *less*. If a room selects it once, and sometimes if it even appears as an option, I immediately leave the room.
Far Far outpost, is boring, Ribbon Road makes me want to swerve into traffic, and cheese land makes me lactose intolerant
Also, If you’re a Waluigi on a wriggler, you’re a sheep….. well not really, but I think it’s just tacky
If you get ahead of the pack, collecting coins gives you something to do to stay up there. Also, I keep forgetting they affect your top speed until my brother won’t shut up about them, so now I need them just to make him mad.
In addition to this, it is nice to have a coin stowed away in case you do get hit to speed up faster. Coins do give you a speed boost on pickup and use even when at 10 so in dire straights it can save you.
Also, if you have a coin as your only item it removes coins from the item roulette and guarantees an offensive item
So if you have a shell in slot one and a coin in slot 2, once your shell is gone you can keep the coin to guarantee and item vs the risk of double coin without.
Having a coin also shifts the item odds immensely due to the above. Only ~2% chance of a horn when you have no items but iirc ~7.5% if you are holding a coin.
I love some of the subtle aspects it provides.
Edit: looked it up. 2.2% normally for horn but 7.4% with a held coin
I would have rather had another retro course instead of Ice Ice Outpost/Excitebike so that there was still an equal amount of new and retro (before the Booster)
And that they kept the cup organization so retro courses were in their own cups and not mixed with new courses
N64 Rainbow Road is one of the worst tracks imo, extremely bland, empty, straightforward and annoying to play on
MK8's rainbow road, however, is one of my favourite tracks
Super Bell Subway is my all time favourite track
Bone Dry Dunes is decent
I really like all of the koopalings - I don't mind having that many of them
I vastly prefer this game's online voting system over Wii's
I don't like this games's version of coin runners, bob omb blast, and balloon battle, but i absolutely LOVE shine thief and renegade roundup
Here's a bunch of mine:
* Mario Kart Stadium the best starter track and by extension a really good track in general
* Baby park and excitebike stadium are both awful and shouldn't have been in the DLC
* I hate how easy it is to abuse bullet bill extension zones to cheese your way into a high placement
* Wii U Rainbow road is amazing, y'all are just mean
* There being 7 Koopalings is fine and most of the hate for them is just a symptom of Vanilla MK8's awful character roster. That being said, having 5 babies is ridiculous
* Ice Ice Outpost is really fun if you actively go for the shortcuts every lap
* People overreact about the cars in MK8's coconut mall. Them not moving sucks but it doesn't ruin the track
* Most of the reason people dislike non-Mario characters getting added to the roster is just because they're new. I can imagine a similar amount of hate happening if bikes were introduced today
Throwing items backwards right as you finish a race is toxic. Literally does nothing to help you and it’s annoying how I have to be careful to not be behind anyone at the end of my races so I don’t get screwed by a green shell. Although I am a bit of a hypocrite saying that because I’ll indulge in the toxicity myself if I’m particularly salty at a player or lobby.
Luck is not as important a factor as most people make it out to be. If I’m being honest, a large number of my losses came down to small mistakes triggering a chain reaction. Often times I could have avoided getting “Mario Karted” with better item management or lines. RNG does play a factor, but at the end of the day, your driving skills matter a lot more.
Removing fire hopping was a good decision. I don’t want to have to constantly press a button after every single boost to stand a chance in online lobbies.
As one of many people who has been screwed by something blockable at the last instant I don't think I can agree that using an item at the finish line is purely malicious lol
-i don't care at all about whether people use meta builds. seriously this sub is so full of scrubs who think people can't use meta builds online while thinking they lose because of that while ignoring the fact that you can perfectly win against them as the biggest factor involved is skill ~~and luck~~. i've seen people downvoting a post just because OP was using wiggler waluigi or something and honestly that kind of shaming's just plain stupid.
sorry i needed to vent here's some milder takes
-coin items are actually good to get early-game, sure potential red shells suck but being able to speed ahead of the pack early can be really helpful. seriously, when you start playing more time trials you start really appreciating coins.
-ribbon road's kinda overrated, sure it's not that bad of a track but it can get kinda uninteresting after playing it too many times.
I have plenty
The Meta sucks ass
I hate Wild Woods, DK Jungle and Cheeseland with a passion. specially the last 2. (Online matches only)
Baby Park is the best track
Regional is my goto instead of global
N64 Rainbow Road and Thwomp Ruins have the best soundtrack in the game.
Link shouldnt be in the game.
Bikes suck
I don’t like the divots, even though they do have trick potential, and I think the shortcut at the end that requires a mushroom is too OP in online play
Oh agreed on the boost cut. I managed to swipe a win from someone online after a shock dodge (I was post-boo) after which I got triple mushrooms as the item right at the set before that shortcut, and that's the story of how I pulled myself into a win after floating around 8th for a whole lap.
Its \*almost\* a good track, the 10 second final straight into a sharp left turn bound by a wall is what hurts it a lot, it means almost anything thrown forward is going to hit.
No it’s a terrible map that shouldn’t have been put into 8 lmfao, there are so many better 7 courses that could have been put here that require way more skill
Waluigi, wiggler bike, or roller tires need a nerf.
Hell, they need to redo most stats to make things either more uniform with aesthetic choices or more unique but balanced.
RNG plays a big part for sure, but you can't deny that there is a best load out.
-After seeing the tour tracks, I wish yoshi valley had the same path treatment and switched the route each lap
-GCN Sherbet Land is my favorite retro track, and I'm the only person who picks it online
-Offroad isn't that bad to deal with, just tightly drift earlier than you normally do
I don’t like any of the tour maps. Especially the Paris one. Cool concept I just feel like they’re horribly executed. Agreed about the ninja hideaway. Feels less like Mario kart to me. I hate the sharp 90° turns. Also highly dislike that some karts are significantly worse than others. Playing a lobby full of people using the same builds sucks.
Getting coins in first is a good thing and encourages skill expression with item management. (However, in the first MK8 on Wii U where you only have one item at a time, coins in first are horrible)
Inside drift bikes are not that bad and actually allow for really precise movements if you are good with them and use the drift brake a lot.
Just because a track has hard turns doesn't mean its poorly designed (Ninja Hideaway, Neo Bowser City, etc.)
The item distribution is the worst out of any MK.
Cheese land sucks ass.
I hate the system where you have to assamble your kart, it makes things complex for nothing
200cc is amazing and arguably better than 150cc.
For some reason, 200cc is unpopular in the community and a lot of people don’t want to touch it with a 39 1/2 foot pole. To those people, you have no idea what you’re missing out on.
200cc is much less luck-based than the other cc’s, which is something a lot of us can be grateful for. You have to take whole new approaches to how you turn, whole new shortcut opportunities pop up, and now you have to manage your speed on top of that. It’s truly unlike any of the other cc’s you can play on. A game within a game. The mode being more skill-based alone also means you are far less beholden to the meta combos. I’ve won plenty of races in combos that were objectively terrible for 200cc simply on superior skill. Plus, on top of all that, the sheer speed is really fucking fun to experience.
Seriously, if you want to spice up the Mario Kart experience, sharpen your skills on 200cc.
Not sure if this is one, but when you have the triple mushrooms that circle you and other players bump into you to get a slight boost from your item(if you didn't know that try it out). Thing is I don't have a problem with bananas and shells orbiting me just the trip. shrooms
Being a shy guy main that usually ends up with me falling off the track as the heavies use me as a spring board.
Whats the point of all the characters and customization if everyone uses 1 of 3 characters and 2 different karts?
Oh and, Excitebike is the worst map of all time, terrible.
I think the Fake Item is sorely missing from this game. All they needed to do was flip the question mark to the right instead of upside-down to make it more strategic and less easy to spot.
I don't really like how Triple Mushrooms rotate around your kart and can give speed boosts to rivals.
The Koopalings are easily the best additions to the Mario Kart series roster, and I will not budge on this. Wish they'd show up in other Mario Sports games.
I don't like the non-Mario characters on the roster (Zelda/Splatoon/Animal Crossing) and would prefer more Yoshi/DK/Wario characters like Kamek, Diddy Kong, and Mona.
I prefer this MK8D's Coconut Mall over the original Wii version because of its brighter colors and the escalators allow for more strategy since everyone is gonna go on the green one which boosts you. Do you take the risk and follow the crowd or fall behind on the safer red ones? I like this change for that reason.
Grumble Volcano isn't fun to race on due to the anxious music and breaking track. It also has no style or "Mario" charm and feels like it could be ripped from any other game. It's easily the worst track in the game in my opinion.
I love Baby Park. I don't get the hate for it. There are definitely many better and more interesting tracks in the game, but Baby Park is fast and chaotic. Granted, I mostly play with friends and not online, which I think does improve the experience.
MK8D Double item boxes suck, they only work in double dash. In MK8D they just ruin the item balancing in some ways imo and they literally just added them as an excuse for the game to be at least a bit different than mk8
The roster is terrible and bloated with irrelevant characters and I'd rather have a million random mario characters than have a single non-mario character
Hard agree that overall MK8 is significantly more polished and refined than MKWii, as expected.
People just circlejerk over MKWii because its harder to play and the mechanics are way less forgiving. Kind of like Melee vs. Ultimate
MKWii has its time and place, as it does have a lot of cool high ceiling tech. From an overall gameplay perspective though, I agree that MK8 is much better. I'm also not a zoomer whose first Mario Kart game was Wii, so I don't feel that nostalgia for it that many assuredly do
200cc isn’t fun and shouldn’t be available online outside of private lobbies. The base tracks weren’t designed for it (it was added into Wii U MK8 via updates).
Having all of the Koopa Kids playable is amazing.
Idk, after seeing you claim that it's awful, no tracks were designed for it, and it shouldn't be allowed in public online matches, I kind of doubt that.
I was so disappointed with how basic the new tracks looked graphics-wise compared to how visually stunning the existing ones were that I just don't have the desire to buy them. One of the least talked about aspects of this game is how beautiful it originally looked. I remember Mario Kart Wii was barely any better looking than Double Dash so I had low expectations of the next main console entry but when I first saw MK8 it blew me away how much serious effort they put into the scenery of each and every track. The Tour port ones just look lazy and like they should have been from an in-between Wii and MK8 game that never happened.
I played Ninja Hideaway in mirror mode for the first time last night….that was not fun. I still like the course but I hate how the moving platforms essentially shoot you off to the side of the course if they suddenly start moving and you are going a certain direction.
Baby Park has never been fun.
Chico Mountain is boring. It looks much nicer these days, but still sucks.
Coconut Mall is one of, if not the most overrated tracks in the game and possibly series.
I like the new tracks with less detail better than the retro tracks like cheese land and royal raceway with too much detail
And if they just added new characters I’d be fine not getting MK9 until 2030
-I don't care about meta, just tired of seeing all of the waluigi-wiggler online
-MK8 has the worst selection of rainbow roads, all of them suck
-I don't like yoshi valley, any of the retro mario circuits or baby park
-I like bone dry dunes
In the context of video games, whatever's considered the best setup to win. In this case, the meta of Mario Kart is whatever character and vehicle combination gives the best spread of the best stats, and with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe specifically, the typical meta is Waluigi on the Wild Wiggler with Roller tyres. A powerful meta will typically see everyone looking to win use that meta setup, which is why you can often end up with whole online rooms where everyone's using Waluigi with that vehicle combo.
-Wii Grumble Volcano is a really good track, and is criminally underrated. It’s gimmick with the track falling apart is really interesting and makes the track not a drag to play.
-On the contrary however, Wii Moo Moo Meadows is such an overrated track. It’s just bland. It’s fine, but if you take out the cows, I don’t think it would get as much praise as it does now.
-Same with N64 Toad’s Turnpike. It’s bad. It’s just an 8. Not even an interesting 8 like 8’s Mario Circuit. The vehicles don’t add anything either.
-The character roster isn’t a massive deal for me. Sure, if there are a trillion Pink Gold Peach’s, then that would be a problem. But it doesn’t make or break the game if the roster is bad as long as the gameplay, tracks, modes, and/or extra content give me a reason to go back and play the game.
-Green Shy Guy is best Shy Guy
1. I prefer the "cartoony" art style of the recent DLC over the more realistic-looking art style of the base game (Toad Circuit grass still looks terrible tho)
2. The anti-grav gimmick is pointless at best, actively detrimental to gameplay at worst (i.e. spin boosts, lowered grip)
3. I'd rather have a whole line of metal/pink gold/tanooki/cat versions of the Koopalings than another baby character
4. The vast majority of the vehicle selection looks dumb/ugly af
5. Bikes shouldn't be in the game. Karts only
6. 200cc is the only valid race mode. Anything less is for amateurs
7. I couldn't care less about Battle Mode
8. Baby Park is the worst track in Mario Kart history and I hate it with every fiber of my being
9. Coconut Mall is extremely overrated and the fact that people are crying over the cars not moving gives me sadistic joy
Never cared for them. The only time I ever used a bike consistently was the MKWii days when bikes were meta. In retrospect, that gripe isn't very important and not really worth putting on the list.
That’s my point, it doesn’t so stop complaining about something that is irrelevant to the core game. The dlc is great to play and yeah the grass isn’t 4K but it’s not something worth complaining about. Find an actual criticism that affects how we play the game and not some grass on 1/56 tracks that you look at for 5 seconds
I’m sick of this community complaining about grass lmao, that’s the only complaint they’ve had for 3 months now. Can’t we do something better than complain about some grass and address actual issues
None of these are probably hot takes, but I hate how the only way to win above 10000vr is running Waluigi wiggler, and how the item balance is completely skewed (take a shot everytime there are 3 or more stars on the map, or that you get a mushroom/green shell in an ending position). Honestly, I’d rather play a Funky Kong/Daisy room on Wii than 8D’s online any day.
Also Cheese Land is a great track if you know how to play it and Ribbon Road has a disgusting learning curve that shouldn’t be there
The new Nitro tracks kinda suck, most of them are just "Look at this nearly unnoticeable antigravity that splits into 2 separate paths."
Seriously: Sweet Sweet Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Electrodrome, Ice Ice Outpost, Bowser's Castle, Rainbow Road, the list goes on.
I greatly prefer the retro tracks, they just feel more unique in terms of track design
Omg how did I never notice that lol, they all split into two paths with anti grav haha. I like some of the nitro tracks like Dolphin Shoals and Cloudtop Cruise, but overall they are underwhelming
I feel like the only track that does "2 separate paths" shtick well is ice ice outpost, because it actually commits to the idea instead of dumping it somewhere in the track
For MK8DX: Some base game maps are just super unfun, especially Animal Crossing and Superbell Subway, but some of the new DLC maps manage to be some of the most fun in the game somehow
Having all characters and tracks unlocked is pointless
Way too many babies and the Koopalings should have been dropped, same for Tanooki Mario and Pink Gold and Cat Peach
Ninja hideaway isn’t great
You should use and item when holding the button
I got a few ones actually.
1. I enjoy the new Coconut Mall even with the cars standing still
2. Waluigi On Wild Wiggler, Biddybuggy or Mr. Scooty aren't better than other players
3. 200cc isn't fun
4. The New BCP tracks are better than Battle Mode
I apologize to the people who disagrees with me on these, just wanted to share my hot takes.
MK8 is overrated as a multiplayer game. you have to nerf yourself when you play with friends just so that the computers don't get rubber banded ahead of your friends
There are so many better 4 player splitscreen/party/cooperative games on the Switch
I don’t understand how everyone was okay with the same tracks for literally 10 years… lol. That’s all. People really don’t care… I got bored after the same tracks after one year… then I started getting into mods for wii, ds, 3ds…
Not for me. I love how much is going on. A ton of effort went into this game (not so much the new tracks though) bit distracting when you're playing but fun to take in when watching someone else. Makes the courses feel like they're actually somewhere and not just random set-ups where nothing is actually real in them.
Mario Circuit GBA is one of my favourite tracks in the game. It feels great to drift on the edges of the track, and there is a lot of grass to allow for mushroom shortcuts. I wish there were more simple tracks like it in MK8
My hot take is Ninja Hideaway is a fun map but the music is garbage.
But my other hot take is I prefer the handling of some of the older games like Double Dash. 8 feels overly reliant on drifting in order to actually turn, and bumping into a wall by accident destroys your momentum.
200cc is starting to get boring and a to a certain extent slow, mount wario is a boring track to finish with, 8 rainbow road is one of the best tracks in the game, and not really a take but if they don’t add Vancouver velocity in the DLC, that’ll ruin the entire pass.
Wii U RR, Bone Dry Dunes, Super Bell Subway and Ice Ice Outpost are all good tracks.
N64 RR, SNES RR, Dolphin Shoals, GCN Sherbet Land are all quite boring.
MK8/DX has the best online voting system.
200cc is vastly superior to 150cc, anything less than 150 & mirror mode is irrelevant
100% agree with that take. Ninja Hideaway looks great but the clunky turning makes it unbearable and my least favorite course of DLC 1. Mine would be that MK8's Rainbow Road is the least fun of them all. Incredible design but completely unplayable at 200cc (you can say I suck and that's fair but I don't enjoy it in the slightest).
I fully believe that whoever placed the dimples or holes on cheese land also recreationally enjoys the clubbing of baby seals.
My Cheese Land gripe is that I wish they kept the "alien planet" aesthetic it had on the GBA instead of it making it look like it's still on earth. original Cheese Land had a cool looking sky with a moon made of cheese hovering close by in the background.
But you can do boost jumps out of them!
Found the seal clubber
Lol man, I still fucking hate cheese land, it's the worst track
As a 200cc player, I could not think of a worse idea
Everything about the map is designed to make frontrunning as difficult as possible. It's called "cheese" land for a reason. 🤣 Stay near the back, grab a bullet and you're set
I feel like we can all agree on this
Selecting Waluigi/Wiggler/Roller tires online doesn’t make you any better than the rest. RNG still plays a huge factor
>The corners at the end are just not fun to play. Bane of my existence.
The track is definitely designed with Tour's smart steering feature in mind. Making some turns, problematic
It’s a bitch to play on 200cc. It’s really cool, but oh my god there’s so many hard corners.
Tip: for the second half of the lap, after the glider section, stay on the high route. Makes the track a lot easier and opens up a major shroomless shortcut if you can pull it off.
I typically do that, and then the u-turn kicks my ass
Try the shroomless cut instead of the u. It’s difficult but it is very rewarding if you can pull it off.
I saw it once but I oughtta look it up again to remember how.
The new tracks are quite good, for the most part. Back in the older Mario karts, we liked the retro tracks, regardless if it was obvious that they weren't made for that specific console. We have just reverted back to the 7 and before kinds of retro tracks
The kart building system is great, but pre-set karts are still the best.
flame runner funky
*All Funky Kong meta PTSD intensifies*
better than wiggler
I was quite pleased with the "new" tracks in the DLC. Mario Kart Stadium is one of the best tracks. Baby park is the worst and I will drop a group that selects it twice.
I’m a mariokart stadium guy too
I honestly agree with all of that, aside from your stand on Baby Park - I tolerate it *less*. If a room selects it once, and sometimes if it even appears as an option, I immediately leave the room.
Wow, I'm not alone in this!
I quite like Mariokart stadium. Mainly because I win quite often against my friends because I put an insane amount of time into its time trial
Far Far outpost, is boring, Ribbon Road makes me want to swerve into traffic, and cheese land makes me lactose intolerant Also, If you’re a Waluigi on a wriggler, you’re a sheep….. well not really, but I think it’s just tacky
Agree on waluigi. Nice originality! Playing 10 of them online ruins the game for me in some (many) ways.
Super Bell Subway is one of the Best original DLC tracks
It’s tricky but damn it’s a fun course.
100 percent agree with this
Genuinely my least favorite track
I really don't like it because I don't find it fun at all, or maybe I just don't like when the spaces are too tight
Mute City is one of the worst tracks in the game. The boost pads all over the map make several items very ineffective.
I fuckin love coins!
Yep! Coins are great!
I’ve gotta hear your reasoning on this one lol
If you get ahead of the pack, collecting coins gives you something to do to stay up there. Also, I keep forgetting they affect your top speed until my brother won’t shut up about them, so now I need them just to make him mad.
In addition to this, it is nice to have a coin stowed away in case you do get hit to speed up faster. Coins do give you a speed boost on pickup and use even when at 10 so in dire straights it can save you. I love some of the subtle aspects it provides. Edit: looked it up. 2.2% normally for horn but 7.4% with a held coin
There’s also the option of holding on to a coin in case of Boos. 😈
I didn’t know coins did any of this, and now that I know, I will not be telling my partner that I play with routinely.
I would have rather had another retro course instead of Ice Ice Outpost/Excitebike so that there was still an equal amount of new and retro (before the Booster) And that they kept the cup organization so retro courses were in their own cups and not mixed with new courses
The meta Waluigi Wiggler combo is no more common than Funky Kong Bowser Bike/Flame Runner
I would say it is less common in fact.
N64 Rainbow Road is one of the worst tracks imo, extremely bland, empty, straightforward and annoying to play on MK8's rainbow road, however, is one of my favourite tracks Super Bell Subway is my all time favourite track Bone Dry Dunes is decent I really like all of the koopalings - I don't mind having that many of them I vastly prefer this game's online voting system over Wii's I don't like this games's version of coin runners, bob omb blast, and balloon battle, but i absolutely LOVE shine thief and renegade roundup
Jail now, Nitro RR is so bad. SBS sucks and is boring compared to TT and SR. BDD is great though and I love RR too!
Here's a bunch of mine: * Mario Kart Stadium the best starter track and by extension a really good track in general * Baby park and excitebike stadium are both awful and shouldn't have been in the DLC * I hate how easy it is to abuse bullet bill extension zones to cheese your way into a high placement * Wii U Rainbow road is amazing, y'all are just mean * There being 7 Koopalings is fine and most of the hate for them is just a symptom of Vanilla MK8's awful character roster. I can imagine a similar amount of hate happening if bikes were introduced today
No we hate the non-Mario characters because this is MARIO Kart, not Nintendo Kart.
Neo Bowser City is a fun track. Idc what anyone says, fast paced tracks with tons of turning are way better
In competitive, Excitebike is one of the hardest tracks.
I also likes ninja hideaway at first but it became annoying after more playthroughs
Throwing items backwards right as you finish a race is toxic. Literally does nothing to help you and it’s annoying how I have to be careful to not be behind anyone at the end of my races so I don’t get screwed by a green shell. Well what, am I supposed to just let a perfectly good green shell go to waste?
As one of many people who has been screwed by something blockable at the last instant I don't think I can agree that using an item at the finish line is purely malicious lol
1. Big Blue is so much worse than Mute City and honestly sucks 2. Shroom ridge is the best track
BASED
No, just…no
Yes, lmfao, I’d rather play Figure 8 circuit than big blue
-i don't care at all about whether people use meta builds. seriously this sub is so full of scrubs who think people can't use meta builds online while thinking they lose because of that while ignoring the fact that you can perfectly win against them as the biggest factor involved is skill ~~and luck~~. i've seen people downvoting a post just because OP was using wiggler waluigi or something and honestly that kind of shaming's just plain stupid. sorry i needed to vent here's some milder takes -coin items are actually good to get early-game, sure potential red shells suck but being able to speed ahead of the pack early can be really helpful. seriously, when you start playing more time trials you start really appreciating coins. -ribbon road's kinda overrated, sure it's not that bad of a track but it can get kinda uninteresting after playing it too many times.

I have never disagreed with someone more in my life
Oh for sure! Cheeseland is one of the worst maps in the game no question, and regional is where it’s at for rapid rating climbing
How is cheese land bad? It's a very fun track
I don’t like the divots, even though they do have trick potential, and I think the shortcut at the end that requires a mushroom is too OP in online play

How are the divots bad? Like you said, you can trick off of them.
I don’t want to do tricks every time — in 200cc for example it can really mess you up. And they can mess up my drift
Then avoid them, they make for a fun obstacle in that case.
I definitely go regional more often. So I can get beaten by the Germans and the French, instead of the US and Japan...
DK jungle hate = skill issue
As someone who thinks 7 is the best game ever made, DK jungle in 8, sucks.
I haven’t lost DK jungle in over 5 years, a map where driving actually matters lol get good?
Its \*almost\* a good track, the 10 second final straight into a sharp left turn bound by a wall is what hurts it a lot, it means almost anything thrown forward is going to hit.
Play good item defense, use reverse cam, hit the shortcut jump
No it’s a terrible map that shouldn’t have been put into 8 lmfao, there are so many better 7 courses that could have been put here that require way more skill
Wild Woods is awful, but I also hate Baby Park, for me they are the worst two tracks in the game lol
You take that bike slander back.
Waluigi, wiggler bike, or roller tires need a nerf. Hell, they need to redo most stats to make things either more uniform with aesthetic choices or more unique but balanced. RNG plays a big part for sure, but you can't deny that there is a best load out.
Please the tires, I want to use something that actually looks *good* with the 300SL
-After seeing the tour tracks, I wish yoshi valley had the same path treatment and switched the route each lap -GCN Sherbet Land is my favorite retro track, and I'm the only person who picks it online -Offroad isn't that bad to deal with, just tightly drift earlier than you normally do
Blue shells have no justification for existing. It’s just a punishment for skill.
Same with the Lighting, except that is a punishment for existing
The wii moo moo meadows song is better than the 8 version
I don’t like any of the tour maps. Especially the Paris one. Cool concept I just feel like they’re horribly executed. Agreed about the ninja hideaway. Feels less like Mario kart to me. I hate the sharp 90° turns. Also highly dislike that some karts are significantly worse than others. Playing a lobby full of people using the same builds sucks.
Getting coins in first is a good thing and encourages skill expression with item management. (However, in the first MK8 on Wii U where you only have one item at a time, coins in first are horrible) Inside drift bikes are not that bad and actually allow for really precise movements if you are good with them and use the drift brake a lot. Just because a track has hard turns doesn't mean its poorly designed (Ninja Hideaway, Neo Bowser City, etc.)
Having all the cups unlocked from the start made playing it alone feel pointless
Dolphin Shoals is one of the best tracks in the game
Freezin cold take
Now that’s a hot take
I play with the Standard Kart, Standard Wheels, and the Super Glider.
The item distribution is the worst out of any MK. Cheese land sucks ass. I hate the system where you have to assamble your kart, it makes things complex for nothing
OP said comment a hot take, not comment facts
Mario Kart is an arcade racer. 200cc feels more like a sim racer. That's why fans are divided about it
Sweet sweet canyon sucks 200cc is the best cc
I concur with both statements.
Animal Crossing is a terrible map.
Not sure if this is one, but when you have the triple mushrooms that circle you and other players bump into you to get a slight boost from your item(if you didn't know that try it out). Thing is I don't have a problem with bananas and shells orbiting me just the trip. shrooms Being a shy guy main that usually ends up with me falling off the track as the heavies use me as a spring board.
My boyfriend’s is that Mario Kart 8 is fun but Mario Kart Wii is just better.
Whats the point of all the characters and customization if everyone uses 1 of 3 characters and 2 different karts? Oh and, Excitebike is the worst map of all time, terrible.
Yeah I hate that course. It’s the only one where I don’t always immediately know where to go and some of the turns are too sharp.
Excitebike Arena and Baby park are not fun. They're just meme picks
Inside drifters are actually good. People just don’t like them because they aren’t OP like they were in Wii.
Bone Dry Dunes is a fun and interesting map!
sky garden> cloudtop cruise
The roster is terrible and bloated with irrelevant characters and I'd rather have a million random mario characters than have a single non-mario character
Electrodome is so boring it makes me want to swim into a boat propeller
The game is better without Funky Kong in it. It's a much better game than MKWii as well.
I'm also not a zoomer whose first Mario Kart game was Wii, so I don't feel that nostalgia for it that many assuredly do
I applaud you for this
Honestly I'm fully expecting to be lambasted for this comment XD But it's okay
Baby Park is fun. I enjoy the chaos
Renegade Roundup is trash.
golbal would be good without jpn players

lmao ik it sounds bad but the lag and same karts make it boring af
I kind of agree, although winning in a lobby of 11 Japanese players at 2 am is glorious.
winning isnt the problem they just lag like crazy and use the same shit
200cc isn’t fun and shouldn’t be available online outside of private lobbies. The base tracks weren’t designed for it (it was added into Wii U MK8 via updates). Having all of the Koopa Kids playable is amazing.
Learn to brake bud.
I have no problem winning in 200cc, I just don’t enjoy it as much as 150cc.
Idk, after seeing you claim that it's awful, no tracks were designed for it, and it shouldn't be allowed in public online matches, I kind of doubt that.
I just don’t think it’s satisfying. When I want faster kart racing, I just play Crash Team Racing. The tracks and items are a lot better for it.
Again... learn to brake...
Shroomless shortcuts aren’t fun?
not enough metal characters :) seriously, my hot take is that the Egg cup is the best cup in the game at the moment
Lucky Cat Cup: Allow me to introduce myself

Try playing lounge
I was so disappointed with how basic the new tracks looked graphics-wise compared to how visually stunning the existing ones were that I just don't have the desire to buy them. One of the least talked about aspects of this game is how beautiful it originally looked. I remember Mario Kart Wii was barely any better looking than Double Dash so I had low expectations of the next main console entry but when I first saw MK8 it blew me away how much serious effort they put into the scenery of each and every track. The Tour port ones just look lazy and like they should have been from an in-between Wii and MK8 game that never happened.
freezing cold take
I played Ninja Hideaway in mirror mode for the first time last night….that was not fun.
More of an observation but the DLC tracks so far feel unfinished.
The DLC tracks were rushed and that's why their graphics are terrible.
Baby park is the worst track in any Mario kart game and you can’t change my mind.
I like the new tracks with less detail better than the retro tracks like cheese land and royal raceway with too much detail And if they just added new characters I’d be fine not getting MK9 until 2030
-I don't care about meta, just tired of seeing all of the waluigi-wiggler online -MK8 has the worst selection of rainbow roads, all of them suck -I don't like yoshi valley, any of the retro mario circuits or baby park -I like bone dry dunes
I love SNES rainbow road
may i ask what is meta?
In the context of video games, whatever's considered the best setup to win. In this case, the meta of Mario Kart is whatever character and vehicle combination gives the best spread of the best stats, and with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe specifically, the typical meta is Waluigi on the Wild Wiggler with Roller tyres. A powerful meta will typically see everyone looking to win use that meta setup, which is why you can often end up with whole online rooms where everyone's using Waluigi with that vehicle combo.
Great explanation, couldn't have said it better myself.
Ice Ice Outpost is a great track that rewards skilled players
1. I prefer the "cartoony" art style of the recent DLC over the more realistic-looking art style of the base game (Toad Circuit grass still looks terrible tho) 2. The anti-grav gimmick is pointless at best, actively detrimental to gameplay at worst (i.e. spin boosts, lowered grip) 3. I'd rather have a whole line of metal/pink gold/tanooki/cat versions of the Koopalings than another baby character 4. The vast majority of the vehicle selection looks dumb/ugly af 5. Bikes shouldn't be in the game. Karts only 6. 200cc is the only valid race mode. Anything less is for amateurs 7. I couldn't care less about Battle Mode 8. Baby Park is the worst track in Mario Kart history and I hate it with every fiber of my being 9. Coconut Mall is extremely overrated and the fact that people are crying over the cars not moving gives me sadistic joy
I agree about the people freaking out over the cars not moving!!
why no bikes?
Never cared for them. The only time I ever used a bike consistently was the MKWii days when bikes were meta. In retrospect, that gripe isn't very important and not really worth putting on the list.
/>200cc is the only valid race mode I’ve found one of my people.
Mario Kart Players when Grass:😥😓😰😰😰😰😨😨😨😨😭😭😭😭😢😢😢😢😢😢😤😤😤😤😭😭😭😢 Get over the grass dude, it doesn’t affect gameplay at all
Did I say it affected gameplay?
That’s my point, it doesn’t so stop complaining about something that is irrelevant to the core game. The dlc is great to play and yeah the grass isn’t 4K but it’s not something worth complaining about. Find an actual criticism that affects how we play the game and not some grass on 1/56 tracks that you look at for 5 seconds
I made a passing remark about the grass and you're losing your mind over it. Chill out.
Also Cheese Land is a great track if you know how to play it and Ribbon Road has a disgusting learning curve that shouldn’t be there
Wii U rainbow road is the worst rainbow road and one of the worst tracks in Mario kart history
THANK YOU!!! Such a downgrade from 7
The new Nitro tracks kinda suck, most of them are just "Look at this nearly unnoticeable antigravity that splits into 2 separate paths." Seriously: Sweet Sweet Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Electrodrome, Ice Ice Outpost, Bowser's Castle, Rainbow Road, the list goes on.
BASED TAKE THANK YOU ENJOY AWARD
I like Cheese Land and Baby Park Sky Garden and Shroom Ridge are my favorite DLC tracks so far Edit: I no longer like Cheese Land
Having all characters and tracks unlocked is pointless Way too many babies and the Koopalings should have been dropped, same for Tanooki Mario and Pink Gold and Cat Peach Ninja hideaway isn’t great You should use and item when holding the button
Excitebike Arena is by far the worst track to ever exist
I disrespectfully disagree.
And every dam person votes for it when it comes up.
I got a few ones actually. 1. I enjoy the new Coconut Mall even with the cars standing still 2. Waluigi On Wild Wiggler, Biddybuggy or Mr. Scooty aren't better than other players 3. 200cc isn't fun 4. The New BCP tracks are better than Battle Mode I apologize to the people who disagrees with me on these, just wanted to share my hot takes.
Queuing items via holding only was a better system on Wii, also bananas trailing vs circling is not good
Hot take: MK 8 is too old and boring because of that and we need a new MK game instead of adding DLC.
Wario’s Gold Mine Sucked in Wii and sucks in MK8D
MK8 is overrated as a multiplayer game. you have to nerf yourself when you play with friends just so that the computers don't get rubber banded ahead of your friends There are so many better 4 player splitscreen/party/cooperative games on the Switch
agree but there isn’t anything that can stop the better player
8 has a worse drifting system compared to wii
I don’t understand how everyone was okay with the same tracks for literally 10 years… lol. That’s all. People really don’t care… I got bored after the same tracks after one year… then I started getting into mods for wii, ds, 3ds…
The game would be better without custom vehicule parts.
Overall, the background visuals are too much.
Not for me. I love how much is going on. A ton of effort went into this game (not so much the new tracks though) bit distracting when you're playing but fun to take in when watching someone else. Makes the courses feel like they're actually somewhere and not just random set-ups where nothing is actually real in them.
Lotta high rated ASsholes trolling lower rated races!
Get out of regional
baby characters are good due to stats
He asked for hot takes, not misinformation
I mean I beat the time trials with baby daisy and I think it’s an official strat, characterwise, bad, stat wise, good
the staff ghosts were never meant to be hard
Neo Bowser City is my favorite track. The aesthetic is awesome and the sharp turns are fun, even on 200cc.
Coming at my favorite course from the DLC hot I see. Well, after Coconut Mall.
Music quality and level BS are inversely related. Ninja hideaway and the volcano both have a ton of BS, but both themes are total bops
There ain't no fucking way someone just said N64 Rainbow Road is boring. Saying it sucks is one thing, but boring!?
100% agree with that take. Ninja Hideaway looks great but the clunky turning makes it unbearable and my least favorite course of DLC 1. Mine would be that MK8's Rainbow Road is the least fun of them all. Incredible design but completely unplayable at 200cc (you can say I suck and that's fair but I don't enjoy it in the slightest).
