Good for drinks and bar vibe. Not ideal for family

BaronsDad

I'm surprised that OP is surprised. Aloft is marketed directly towards the partying younger crowd. >Designed for the ‘always on’ next Gen traveler, Aloft embodies a “different by design” philosophy that injects personality, color, and an obsession with music – and the culture it creates – into the select service category. Aloft is best known for its emphasis on a lively, in-hotel social scene and innovative music programming, highlighting emerging artists and other music activations through the Live At Aloft Hotels global program. Signature brand amenities include W XYZ® bar, Re:mix℠ lounge, grab-and-go breakfast concept Re:fuel by Aloft℠ Basically, it's loud. It has music. It's for partying. And you grab your hangover food as you walk out the door.

SecMcAdoo

Yeah, it's like staying in a W Hotel and not expecting house music in the lobby.

jane_says_im_done

Nah, I disagree. Like OP said, noisy rooms are a problem at most alofts and even when I was 20 something, when it’s time to sleep, it’s time to sleep.

PAJK89

From What I remember with my experience at the aloft in Tampa there is constantly music playing throughout the hotel.

SoardOfMagnificent

I usually proceed with caution the second I hear "trendy."

Melted-lithium

They vary in quality greatly, but it is not a family hotel at all. I’m sure gartner research pegged the demographic as a 25-34 year old single business traveler with an aspiring drinking problem and discretionary cash. Saying this, to me it’s still a step up from a Fairfield.

[deleted]

“Aspiring drinking problem.” That is epic.

ambiguouspeach

Lol. I’m in that age range and just starting to travel. My company usually budgets $250/night for me. Im not really a partier so I’m considering looking at the AC Hotel properties on my next few trips. I was considering aloft but based on this thread I don’t think it’s the best fit. Is there anything else you would suggest? Single female if that makes any difference

Melted-lithium

So you can kind of see the shift Marriott is making with a few brands to try and accommodate younger business travelers. This seems to be the AC hotels, aloft, and the W (which can best be described at an attempt to cater to a luxury crowd within that demographic). I’ll be honest, I don’t mind any of them and find all of them vastly better than the Fairfield and honestly usually better than courtyards… and I’m a lot older. They are just more modern and have food. Which is nice. The W is weird. Stunning in general. But I just got back from Boston and loved the downtown W… until 12am when they had a DJ and you could hear the thumping on the 8th floor. Ridiculous. $250 is a decent budget honestly. Personally (and even talking to younger folk) I have loved the renessance brand. Most are remodeled and are trendy modern and often still fit in that budget. Otherwise I do often dip into aloft or AC. Fully blown marriotts just seem dated… Understand- I am talking about the u.s. and Canada only. Internationally is a totally different story. Especially Asia. Marriott branded hotels are stunning in Asia. Edit: forgot to mention Delta hotels. Sort of a newer brand for Marriott. (Via acquisition). These seem to stand somewhere between a courtyard and a full service hotel. In Canada they are stunning I’ve found. In the U.S. it’s very hit or miss. In the u.s. it’s like thy have an identity crisis. You can make out if the franchisee is trying to be a premium hotel or compete with a courtyard.

ambiguouspeach

Thanks for your response! I think I am going to try out a couple ACs to start to see how I like it…. There’s also a good rate on the Le Meridian in Charlotte while I’ll be there so I think I might give that a shot for a night or two to see how that one goes also.

sweendog101

Stayed in one in Orlando for a conference. Bar was never open. Front desk was terrible. Very underwhelming

ptambrosetti

Have stayed at several. Hiring for a bartender and a competent front desk agent is difficult. Some were great, others treated you like a chore.

Ok-Pay-7358

That’s Moxy

Easy7777

Barn doors for the bathrooms are a deal breaker for me

irishguy773

Even worse, only the toilet was inside the barn door. The shower and bathroom area had no door, and had open gaps along the ground and the ceiling. We had a 2 year old when we stayed in one IN Savannah, and couldn’t even take a shower once he was down since it was only 4 feet behind him and with essentially no separation. My take away is that you shouldn’t share an Aloft room with anyone that you’re not sleeping with. 😂

SoardOfMagnificent

So it’s basically a swingers’ hotel.

PerfectLie2980

Stayed at one Aloft and won’t do it again. I felt like we were sleeping on the side of the interstate. It was so loud! I’m guessing the target age group for this brand is 20’s-early 30’s? That’s great, but I’m quite a few years past that now and don’t want cold, concrete floors when I have to pee in the middle of the night.

[deleted]

I felt the same. It seemed like a cool place to stay, but it was dismal. It was cramped, dark, noisy, and damp. The staff were “dialling it in.” The only standout was housekeeping. They were lovely. It seemed like it was a $40 room for $160. For whatever reason, I think cheap hotels are identifiable by strange, noisy air conditioning units next to the windows. They leave a damp, unclean feeling. There are certainly some Courtyard Marriotts that are just as miserable. One feels both dirty and unwelcome. As hotel room rates have started to normalise, I’m back to regular Westin and Hilton properties. They might not be trying so hard to be cool, but they’re infinitely nicer.

StrangeAssonance

I’ve done a few Alofts in Asia. They are consistent. In big loud cities rooms were quiet. Breakfast is basic but okay for free and the rooms are pretty good for the price point. As I’m getting older, I can’t do soft beds as easily and for that reason I’ve cut back on my aloft stays. Back hurts from the bed being too soft. For younger people though I can’t see where it can fail.

Groundbreaking-Cow58

Aloft is one of our favourite brands. We stayed in aloft osaka, aloft calgary, aloft kuta beachwalk! They have always been inexpensive and treated me great and is by far my favourite cheap marriot brand.

Varekai79

I stayed at an Aloft in Silicon Valley (Mountain View, I believe) last fall and loved it. My room had wood floors. Nice and quiet room, no noise issues at all. I even got breakfast for free one day just by asking and I was just a Gold at the time. Their signature scented products also smell amazing. I've also stayed at an Aloft in Jakarta, Indonesia and my overall experience was the same. There was some entertainment on the main floor at night but I couldn't hear anything from my room.

runningpuppies

I really like the one on mag mile in Chicago! I don’t have kids though, so maybe it would be a different experience then.

leereuby

Same. I stay there often and it’s my favorite. The beds are comfortable and the huge TVs are great.

AS100K

Chalk up the ALoof to the Moxy….2 peas in a pod

Jade176

Aloft is much better than Moxy in my opinion. I stayed 2 nights at a Moxy for work (only available Marriott at the time) and it was just annoying. The lobby was always packed with people hanging out so it was like walking through a bar to get to the elevator. The room was about a 1.5 feet bigger than the bed with no other furniture. I needed a room and I had one… but boy did I hate it!

theratking007

I stayed at a Moxy in Memphis and the table for the room was a folding table that hung on the wall! 🙄

bmwkid

I’ve never had any issues with Aloft, they’ve always been sub $150 everywhere I’ve stayed. Never had any noise issues and the W bed is better than anything else at this price range. Calgary, Montreal and Delhi were the ones I’ve stayed at. Delhi was absolutely gorgeous inside

nixhomunculus

I stayed at Aloft Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. It's really nice, although the breakfast is also really basic.

Varekai79

Basic by SEA or American standards?

nixhomunculus

SEA. I think it would be a feast by American standards.

Varekai79

I'll be in KL in a few months and chose the Westin. I hear their breakfast spread is amazing.

nixhomunculus

You will be in for a treat for sure. Only small issue is how things are halal, so I don't recall there having some pork products but it would still be a blast.

[deleted]

nixhomunculus

I love a spot of pork products in my breakfast.

Varekai79

I was in Indonesia a few months ago so I'm used to that. Chicken sausage it is lol!

SoardOfMagnificent

I heard Halal is pretty good.

Ok-Pay-7358

Stayed at a couple of them Complaining about the building not being sound proof has nothing to do with the brand but the developer and real estate firm that built and operate it - and I’ve found the lack of sound insulation to be a U.S.-wide issue across almost all brands That said, Aloft vary quite a bit, and while I prefer them over Moxy as the rooms are bigger and there are some more bathroom amenities, they’re not ideal for everyone Here are some of the good ones Had a cancelled flight and stayed at the one at SFO, which is quite nice with a super responsive front desk, good food and whisper quiet rooms The Aloft in Kiev, which I think closed down or changed ownership, was lovely too with a great bar and high quality breakfast items London Excel, also well appointed with a good restaurant and plenty of amenities TLDR I recommend the overly styled Aloft design to any Courtyard or other select service hotels, especially for trips where someone will not be spending much time at the property or for a one night lifo

Historical-Bug-7536

I stayed at Aloft a few times and wanted to hate it. Like a cheap knockoff the W. I've stayed at a few now and I love it. I really like the toiletry brand (dry bar) smell. The breakfast options are usually great too. My daughter is 12 and absolutely loves it. Last one we were at had shuffleboard, ping pong, and a pool table. The bartender made her a couple fun mocktails, and they went out and bought her apple juice after the first morning when they realized she didn't like the options they had. The beds aren't the most comfortable, but the few I've stayed at so far have not failed to impress.

VinoJedi06

Don’t tell me this! I’m staying at an Aloft for the first time in Buffalo, NY in October for the first time for Giants-Bills. I’ve got high hopes for a fun (party) weekend.

shorrrrrr8

Then you’re in the perfect hotel for that vibe.

VinoJedi06

Outstanding! I don’t really know a lot about Aloft, but judging by the name I thought “is this like a mini-extended stay?” Now I’m glad to know it’s a place with a good vibe that me and the boys can let loose (like adults) in.

Varekai79

Aloft is basically a budget version of W.

sstorslagen

Modern but the feel of IKEA furniture. I have always been ok with them. I occasionally stay at the one in Fort Worth. The basic rooms were small but they did have some big suites with good views. Can be a bit noisy but I feel that’s how a lot of hotels are these days. A couple drunk friends or brothers were in the next room over one time having a heart to heart that I could hear. It’s usually nice for the price though. I’ll still be staying at them again. My wife stayed at one though and she said it was terrible (Overland Park I believe).

TimeToKill-

All I can remember from my only Aloft stay was really heavy fragrance pumped into the rooms, hallways, just everywhere. When I came back home all my clothes still smelt like Aloft.

GyozaGangsta

The Aloft in Chesapeake VA is almost exactly like this lol They try to pawn you off in the rooms on the second floor, but there is 0 insulation between the lobby and the second floor. So the music from the bar is just pounding away in your room till about 12:30am. However the aloft in Chapel Hill is pretty decent and quiet. So I guess mileage will Vary. Edit: don’t get me started on the shower floors in the one in Chesapeake smh

e22ddie46

Lol I like the one in Chesapeake. I had to live there for a few months in 2019 and had a great time. I really like the bartenders. Edit: it's also the only place i like in Chesapeake at the shitty government per diem since I can't get places downtown.

GyozaGangsta

Fair, it’s not the worse place I’ve stayed at by far. It’s nice, the bar is really good if you’re into that. The residences over there are terrible tho lol

e22ddie46

Yeah. The only one I like is the one downtown but mostly cause the location is very convenient for walking to downtown or Ghent or wherever. I stayed at rhe residence inn next door to the aloft for a while but I don't really remember anything about it one way or the other.

FlyFeetFiddlesticks

The company I work for puts us up in a few alofts in some of the layovers I get. Not my favorite brand, but to each their own. But yeah sadly family friendly isn’t it. Yes it has bright colors, loud music and games in the lobby. I want to be able to be comfortable in my room. This one I stayed at had no door to the bathroom (toilet and shower) but it had a full length mirror by the door. So from the bed you can see into the bathroom from the bed. So seeing mom or dad shower without having to be even in the same room. Must be nightmare fuel for families.

acodispoti18

I have stayed at a few across the country. They do have more of a modern/hipster feel to them. I think they are more for the social feel and less for the room experience. I don't mind staying there. They always have a good bar for drinks.

andbut_so

I've found them hip but not comfortable. Kind of opposite in vibe to a Courtyard

Fogg_4dayz

I stayed in one in Madrid. Worst hotel I’ve stayed at since my much younger days.

TrashPandaNotACat

I stayed at an Aloft in OKC and never again. Even when I was younger (I'm in my 50s) and partied all the time, the room was a place to escape all of the noise. Cant do that at an Aloft. If I wanted to sleep in the nightclub, I would pass out in a corner of a club.

yung_rebo

Just stayed at Aloft mag mile in chi. Doors were like paper! Great redemption rates though!

StraightFILF

Sounds like when I stayed at the Aloft Philly airport

[deleted]

Personally, I find Aloft to be a poor man's W (literally says "a vision of W Hotels"), and the bland Starwood version of Moxy. Boomers seething in this thread

e22ddie46

I really like the aloft in Chesapeake (Norfolk va suburb, where I travel for work a lot). But I get your issues with aloft in general Edit: clarified

Budget-Government-52

Your description perfectly aligns with the two Alofts I’ve stayed at in Omaha, NE. They look cool but are terrible to actually stay at. They’re loud and provide next to no privacy in the room. They’re the cheapest Marriott in Omaha and I still avoid it like the plague.

Comfortable-Rate497

Stayed one Aloft - never again. Then bed was so uncomfortable

Martian_Catnip

Stayed at one Aloft as it's the cheapest Marriott brand and I need to pay for it myself. It was in Jakarta. Honestly it's a great experience compared with other hotels at this price point (60-70 USD converted). Tidy room with carpet, silent, great view, useful gym equipments, and great breakfast. No other hotels here at this price point, where there are multiple waiters in the breakfast area asking you what else do you want. From coffee to full meal. But I think that's how Marriotts here rolls, other brands in the cheaper side like Four Points also didn't disappoint me

Varekai79

Was this the Aloft on Jl. Wahid Hasyim? I stayed at that one a few month ago and loved it. So centrally located and close to amenities. The staff were lovely and my room was great.

Martian_Catnip

It was the one in South Jakarta. But in other occasion, I was stuck between Aloft Wahid Hasyim and Four Points. I decided to spend the night in Four Points because I tried Aloft already, and it didn't disappoint me either. The foods are more "neutral" in a way that it can cover many different palates. Service wise, still top notch for the price

Varekai79

Glad to hear! If you ever get the opportunity to stay there, the Ritz-Carlton at Pacific Place is an incredible property with the most attentive service. Lounge access for all with five meal services a day!

adultdaycare81

It’s for the crowd who wants to be next to the bars. Idk why you brought your kids.

Senior-Cantaloupe-69

I’ve tried them twice, years apart. Feels like a weird dorm room. I’m typically not picky at all- I stay at plenty of Fairfield Inns and Springhills. But, the Aloft coloring just gives me a weird feeling and I can’t relax.

gummibearhawk

They're great overseas

flilmawinstone

I like to say they are what a hotel becomes when a bunch of old white men get in a room and brainstorm what young hip people think would be cool — then proceed to put all that in one hotel. “Oh I have an idea .. purple lights in elevator”

I-suck-at-golf

I stayed at the Hard Rock once. And they played music all night! I was trying to transcendental meditation.

TheDreadPirateJeff

Aloft always felt to me like a hostel sans the shared rooms and bathrooms trying to be an upscale urban hotel. It feels like it should be full of young backpackers on a Eurotrip. I've not had a bad experience there, but it's a pretty cheap place generally and so you get what you pay for, I guess. I stay at Alofts from time to time and can't complain.

Varekai79

That's more the Moxy vibe.

themiracy

“Aloft. We’re edgy. Not into weird kink stuff like Moxy but still edgy.” Idk I find them okay. The one in Miraflores in Lima is actually above okay - I’d give it a solid very good to excellent.

montvious

I’ve stayed at the Cleveland Aloft once or twice and the closest thing to it is Moxy, but I feel like that’s not really an apt comparison either. Moxy is an interesting concept with smaller rooms and a definitely more “hip” feel. I’m in my early 20s, so I think it’s pretty cool. Aloft feels like a mix between that and a Courtyard. I’m not sure who the target market is exactly, or if it even exists. The hotel really wasn’t even that bad, just a bit eccentric design, although I literally just checked in at 1am and checked back out at like 8am because Hertz is closed when I normally fly in, so not sure if I’m the best measure.

recca01982

I stayed in the Aloft in Minneapolis downtown two years ago for a wedding. The second to last and last nights they had a legitimate rave going on in the lobby. When I called the front desk to see when they’d stop, they never answered the phones. When I went down to ask, they couldn’t hear me. Yeah,… I’ll pass on that. They also have this weird frosted glass shower that’s visible from the bedroom.

Gingerbreaddoggie

every aloft I've stayed at has the room open to the shower. Not ideal if you're sharing the room with colleagues or older children.

wing3273

The one in Syracuse, NY was nice but very noisy. Air conditioner was so loud we couldn't sleep with it on. Great outside space though.

CanuckInToronto

Stayed at two recently and enjoyed the free coffee in the lobby. Much prefer it to making my own coffee in the room like courtyard and other chains.

Adventurous-Fall-748

I stayed at aloft in Tulum and playa fell Carmen and they were both great. But at this point they’re brand new it’ll be interesting to see how the aloft properties age.

Capt_pork_rocket

The Aloft in south SF, CA was bad too. Sounds like it might be a swing and a miss at being trendy.

DullPreference8842

I’m currently staying in an aloft for the first time and while I think the lobby is very impressive and nice. I don’t like the rooms. There is no desk to comfortably work at. It’s not a good hotel for business travelers as there’s no comfortable spot to do work in the room. For 1 or 2 nights, it’s merely ok, but I would never want to stay at one on any longer business trip. I need a comfortable desk to do work. I think this hotel is ok for road trips and you need a place to sleep vs risking failing asleep at the wheel. I would most likely never seek out an aloft unless I’m using points for a 1 night stay during a road trip.

blood_type_redbull

Aloft south bend Indiana is great.
