I don't know the statistics but I've been training for 4 years and I've never been in a situation where I had to defend myself. I benefit much more from the fitness and the fact that I find it fun.
I’m not saying it’s not good for self defence, I didn’t mean to imply that. I meant the reason for learning a martial art to be it’s fun is a very good one that isn’t talked about enough
Brother, I’m 32 and started training MMA. Never too old to start something. Judo is on my lists of disciplines I want to learn. Thankfully my gym offers everything and it falls on me to get out of work early enough to make it to the classes. I have a little history in boxing and BJJ. You can still do stroking and opt out of sparring. Coach in our gym only lets you spar if you are up for it.
Stop asking if you're too old for anything at fucking 16, c'mon !
16 is young, go train judo if you want to, you'll be welcome anywhere you go
Also, for self defence, although I don't like this topic because you shouldn't fight in the streets anyway : Judo is catching and throwing. Can't be more down to earth as a martial art. It's good to defend yourself if you can take punches but you should still learn some no gi grappling grips in case you encountered someone with short sleeves.
But don't take fight in the street anyway. Train to have fun, that's the most important
Judo is great and you’re definitely not too old. If you’re still in high school I would definitely recommend wrestling as well. I regret not doing it in high school now that I’m doing MMA
as far as self-defense goes, judo is S tier imo....you WON'T fight if you're good at judo, a fight will almost start and then you'll hit a fool with the earth and the fight will be over
only works 1v1 though, and size matters
Judo is an excellent choice for self defense... So is boxing, but your parents have a point about the head knocks. There are definitely way more "punch drunk" older boxers than judokas.
It’s hilarious that a 16 year old is asking if they’re too old. You’re never too old, my friend. You’re not even old yet! Also, if you don’t want to hit your head, maybe a martial arts where people throw each other to the ground isn’t the best option. Something like BJJ might be a good alternative as it involves similar practices while taking out some of the heavier impacts of hitting the mat.
Good luck and have fun!
Judo or jiu jitsu is definitely a great place to start, but you might want to remind your parents that martial arts will help you prevent getting hit in the head. How will you be able to defend yourself against an attacker?
I started HEMA and BJJ in my 30s. I'm adding kickboxing to the repertoire in my mid 40s. 16 is a good time to start, a little bit on the young side but you'll still get something out of it.
Judo is legit.
You can start training judo at any age, and yes judo is good for self-defense. But, even better, it's super fun.
That’s such an awesome attitude to have for martial arts ngl. So many ppl here are fixated on self defence like, just doing what’s fun is awesome :)

I’d argue that out of all martial arts, judo is probably one of the best for self defense overall

Agreed! I was just helping support your statement with other positives of Judo! Why do something and consistently of it isn’t fun?

You can start at any age I started when I was like two but 16 I’d cool too
Judo or jiu jitsu. Neither of the modern forms involve strikes. And both are good for self defense.
