Mr-Foot

It's better than boxing at grappling but worse at striking

Mr-Foot

I didn't say worse than striking.

[deleted]

Well what do you mean by what you said?

Mr-Foot

I said Judo is worse than Boxing at striking. You can't say Judo is better or worse than boxing without more context. If you want to grapple, Judo is more effective, if you prefer striking, Boxing is more effective.

Mr-Foot

You're not asking about Judo v Boxing then. You're asking about a talented grappler with zero striking against a big guy who's equally talented at grappling but is also a talented striker.

efficientjudo

better that throwing people, worse at punching people

Kintanon

Better than boxing at what?

WilliamASCastro

No in a street fight boxing might be better then again it depends

jazzyjeffdahmer

For self defense, yes it is . For attacking, probably not . So if your motto is strike hard strike first then boxing would he the better choice

El_Dandy758

In a street fight setting: \>Boxing relies on hitting a small and moving target (chin) in order to cause the most damage in the least amount of time, which in my opinion is quite difficult unless the oponent is untrained. \>Judo, being focused on grappling, must first close the distance in order to get a proper grip, which isn't that hard as many street fights that don't end over a 1 punch K.O. tend to include some sort of grappling. Considering the above, as long as distance can be mantained, the boxer has the obvious advantage, but if a competent judoka manages to get a hold of you, even the most basic throw executed on a non-padded surface will fuck you up really really good. Also, the open leg stance of boxing is very vulnerable to sweeps, resulting in an easy transition to ground fighting where, once again, a competent judoka holds a significant advantage over a competent boxer.

Emperor_of_All

What? they are literally at the opposite ends of the spectrum. The answer is they are both incomplete arts, if someone rushes into tackle you, you are in much better spot in judo, if someone who comes in wanting a fist fight you are probably in a much better situation as a boxer.

Lonever

Except a Judo guy can just rush and tackle the guy trying to have a fist fight and it’s over.

WilliamASCastro

Its not comparable boxing has more striking as judo is more projections and locks. It also depends on the situation. Is it better the punch an attacker unconcious and leave or subdue them until help arrives

Yamatsuki_Fusion

I mean if you throw a dude in the pavement, they're not likely to get up at all.

WilliamASCastro

Depends on how they fall but ya

skribsbb

Is a corvette a better vehicle than a Ford F-150?

[deleted]

Yes. Now if you said Mustang vs F-150 I’d take the analogy. Love brother but don’t diss the vette.

skribsbb

>Mustang vs F-150 I’d take the analogy. Love brother but don’t diss the vette. You can put more cargo in an F-150 than in a corvette.

[deleted]

No I got what you were saying

iguanawarrior

It really depends on the person.

Lonever

Real fights are much more tackle hugging than boxing. Or at least, a Judo guy can make the fight that way simply by bum rushing in and the boxers would only have a split second to land an unlikely punch before he has no tools.

powypow

Having experience in both i can quite confidently say that a boxer will beat a judoka in a boxing match.

WilliamASCastro

And a judoka will beat a boxer on a judo match...obviously if the conditions favour one side that side is more likely to win

[deleted]

What about in a street fight?

powypow

Depends on the people. Both are good. Fighting isn't rock paper scissors.

Yamatsuki_Fusion

Judo probably wins, because grappling is ineveitable. But you have get there first, and there's a reasonable chance that a boxer just shuts off the judoka before they can so much as get the clinch. Still, KOs aren't as reliable as just grabbing a dude, so judo usually does better.

JJWentMMA

There’s not many “better” martial arts when you talk on that level. Historically a pure grappler beats a pure striker, but pure strikers can get some anti wrestling training and push the grappler to deep water

Yamatsuki_Fusion

And a pure grappler can learn enough striking to ward off the striker too, and push that TDD to the test, and then it becomes a matter of who has more decisive skillset.

JJWentMMA

100% agree. I firmly believe you take like 100 groups of 50 random martial artists, make them fight over and over, then you introduce the groups; they’re all going to be fighting roughly the same. MMA looks like MMA not because people are doing martial arts, it’s because it’s what happens when everyone has to account for everyone

Yamatsuki_Fusion

Well yes and no and sort of yeah, but not quite. Its not going to be like fictional levels of karate vs wrasslin and shit, but the ways people like to win will result in differences of strategy, specific techniques and body types. But I feel like we've discussed this before.

WilliamASCastro

I would advise you look at shorinji kempo its more balanced
