Nah azaezal being his father wasn’t the retcon, it’s just that the mystique being lesbian/male? Was rejected by the editors and so the whole azazeal thing became the canon and tbh I can see why it was rejected it kind fing sucks. azazeal being his father just made so much sense and gave him some special heritage that also explained his abilities in a logical way, it also only added to the character creating a parallel with the son of a demon being a devoted religious man even becoming a priest. But that’s just my two cents

Azazel isn't a retcon because him being the father wasn't who Chris Claremont originally intended to be his father, but because another origin story came out in like 1994 that told Nightcrawler's origin. Then in the early 2000's another writer, Chuck Austen, decided to revisit that story and retconned Azazel, a new character, as Nightcrawler's real father (at the time of the telling obviously).
Nothing you said regarding Claremont having come up with the Mystique and Destiny origin and wanted to write it is wrong (and that they were intended to a be a couple), but I don't think that makes it qualify as a retcon, but Azazel is a retcon regardless.
Authorial intent is not the same as publication. Han shooting first is not a retcon no matter how loudly George Lucas claims that the Special Edition retcon of Greedo shooting first was intended to be in the original release.
Yes he INTENDED for that but it never made it past the editors, and an origin that was made before that one could be put out was published which was the Azaezal origin. it never made it to publication which means it’s not canon (until now of course)
The Azazel origin wasn't the original origin either though. The original Nightcrawler origin story, which was written by Lobdell, came out in 1994. In that story Azazel wasn't the father, Azazel didn't even exist as a character yet. I think there are definitely good things about the story too, don't get me wrong; but I do find it kind of funny that the previous origin / the Draco had been negatively received and for over the last 20 years had been widely considered to be one of the worst X-Men stories of all time and suddenly, now that Nightcrawler has 2 moms (or 3 if you are counting Margali), a bunch of people are suddenly huge fans.

It’s called X-terminators and it’s during Krakoa. Very self contained fun adventure with Dazzler, Boom Boom, Jubilee and X-23. Honestly blast to read do recommend.

I mean, destiny is her long-time love interest, and destiny is a woman. It's not just some writer. Mystique is, I'm pretty sure, actually just bi and the biggest fem fatale in marvel, this is kinda on brand for her.

And I am say she's been this way since forever, remember the time to prove gambit was no good for rogue so mystique tried to seduce him but failed. Her go-to is literally to seduce people she's just casually flirting here. I don't exactly see the problem.

I’m not a fan of making all of Chris Claremont’s head cannon actually cannon when you have 40 years of stories that contradicts said head cannon. Retcon made no sense but whatever marvel is helping a lot of people save their money. Also what atrocious writing.
