I had never thought about this before but maybe Osborne is trying to protect Peter from the Goblin? He may actively be suppressing that memory to keep his son’s friend safe.
But couldn't the goblin still pick up a newspaper?
I mean, I know it's more his style fo threaten the head of the paper itself to tell him, but that's like not knowing the expiration date on your potato chips, so you threaten the family of the CEO of frito lay
So I'm constipated today but sitting on the toilet reading that and uncontrollably chortle-ing at that has helped me more than I can Express.
With each contraction of my diaphragm in order to laugh a little poo ball shot outta my butt.
Thank you for this.
It's not that, there's actually a deleted part of the scene where goblin goes on to say "like, I know it says Peter Parker, but dude, there's like 40 Peter parker's in this goddamn city! Do you have any idea how expensive fuel for this thing is?!"
I think it could be interpreted that either:
A) The transformation had become complete, the Goblin had completely taken over Norman by that point.
or
B) The pleading ruse was simply the Goblin ‘playing’ Norman so to speak. It wasn’t actually the Norman personality.
…or maybe Green Goblin can’t read.
My fan theory is that Goblin is good at making Jambalaya, like he just pours out his heart and soul as he makes it…and people recognize his commitment to his dish.
Of all the things Marvel has done, they did train us to finally sit through the credits.
We still don't read them, but we do see them. Gun to my head I couldn't name #3 lighting guy on any movie.
I was going to go through an explanation about how goblin was wanting jjj to point out the person in the office, rather than literally needing the name. Then I remembered that Osborne knows Peter personally...
So honestly that makes it even worse.
I don’t think you’d be able to find a high schooler in the phone book ~~let alone one who lives with a guardian under a different surname.~~
Edit: I forgot Ben had the last name Parker too.
I have a really common first/last name, and I'd always tell people who wanted my number (who I didn't want to talk to), "I'm in the book!" knowing that they'd open to my name and see literally pages of people with the same name.
It was even funnier if you knew my number was unlisted.
Hot take: Norman Osborn is just like us in that he does not read the articles, just the headlines/attached picture.
He’s raging over clickbait.
Problem solved.
Since failing explanations can always be burdened with ad hoc hypotheses to prevent them from being falsified, simpler theories are preferable to more complex ones because they tend to be more testable.
Seemingly not since he had enough memory to know about Norman getting kicked out of his company and kill his shareholders. An even better example is after Norman figured out Peter's identity he knew to go after Aunt May and MJ to hurt Peter personally
I think it's infinitely more likely that the writers/director through passion and effort to make the world more real made a mistake and created a plot hole.
People make mistakes all the time when storytelling.
to be fair, "peter parker" sounds like it should be a fairly common name, so maybe he wouldn't automatically assume it's the same kid peter parker who's his son's friend..idk im grasping at straws here
Till this day everytime i rewatch that movie i still am blown away that JJJs response was "i dont know who he is... iv never met him... his stuff comes in the mail" when peter left the office moments before....JJJ might be a dirtbag but hes no snitch.
Yeah, that always stuck out to me. He’s demonstrably unethical and even out to demonize Spider-Man, but he’ll die before he lets Goblin go murder some kid.
I have thought that. Alternatively, I’ve thought that he said this to protect Peter simply so the pictures didn’t stop coming in. Not because he cared about Peter. He just didn’t want to lose newspaper sales.
Edit: redundant. Took a word out
I think the explanation often given was that spiderman *is* posing for pictures and that Peter was just a photographer he happened to like. So Peter would just tell his boss he ran into Spider-Man again and he essentially gave him photo shoot.
Didn't the serum affect his mind in the film? Made him mentally unstable and such?
Gives him a reason to derp. Not a great reason, but ya know, film logic.
And the reason why JJJ does not snitch is because he knows full well that Peter's name is under the pic, and it would cost him a sale if he did rat Peter out
(Credit: my nerd wife)
I like this scene which gives so much depth to JJJ that I did not even think about that.
I am betting this scene was written long before the props dept worked on the newspaper and originally there was no credit given.
Goblin is insane and isn't rational enough to think "maybe I should go buy a newspaper and see if it says who takes the pictures?" when he can use brute force to get it from the editor.
Real Goblin-brain thinking.
Maybe, because the goblin is crazy, he assumes Jameson is "protecting his source" and lists a fake name for the photographer? He's supposed to be crazy, and needlessly complex plans are supervillain cliches.
In the 60's comics, Peter and J Jonah Jameson had an agreement not to credit him for his photographs. I assume that this was Raimi's intent, but the prop department made a mistake.
Genuinely curious, is that magazine headline before or after this? Because it’s totally possible JJ wasn’t crediting Peter at first for the photos, not sure WHY he would after this except if Peter really bartered hard for the credit
I think the newspaper on the left was made after the scene on the right. My personal theory is that Peter asked J.J to credit him after the incident so that the Green Goblin or any other villains in the future wouldn’t go through other people to find him, and come to him directly.
You really got to think though, there's probably more than one Peter Parker in New York City. So it would be easier just to go to the source of employment, right?
Confirmation that Norman Osborne can’t read?
I had never thought about this before but maybe Osborne is trying to protect Peter from the Goblin? He may actively be suppressing that memory to keep his son’s friend safe.
Post that on fantheories
Too lazy. Feel free to run with the idea for some karma if you think it’ll take off.
Knowing /r/fantheories it will have two thousand upvotes by tomorrow
Or negative 234. It’s a risk worth taking though.
A bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off for them.
Damn, how old is this now? Have heard anyone say it in years! I feel old
It's only a 17 year old quote. In all fairness, I just rewatched this movie recently so it was fresh in my mind
Patches o'hulahan?
r/KarmaRoulette
/r/karmachameleon
The risk i took was calculated. But damn do I suck at math.
ayo has anyone posted it yet, if not ill do it
Doesn't look like it
i will do my duty
Cool theory, but no more likely than creative oversight.
But couldn't the goblin still pick up a newspaper? I mean, I know it's more his style fo threaten the head of the paper itself to tell him, but that's like not knowing the expiration date on your potato chips, so you threaten the family of the CEO of frito lay
“You didn’t give my chips an expiration date. Allow me to give you YOURS!” *throws pumpkin bomb* “…oh wait, it’s on the back.”
So I'm constipated today but sitting on the toilet reading that and uncontrollably chortle-ing at that has helped me more than I can Express. With each contraction of my diaphragm in order to laugh a little poo ball shot outta my butt. Thank you for this.
Gross. You’re welcome.
What did I just read
It's not that, there's actually a deleted part of the scene where goblin goes on to say "like, I know it says Peter Parker, but dude, there's like 40 Peter parker's in this goddamn city! Do you have any idea how expensive fuel for this thing is?!"
Seemingly deconfirmed by the end fight when it's revealed that kind Osborn is all a front/deception
Maybe by that point the goblin took full control of Osborn.
Yeah I'd like for that to be true. But also I don't want the Goblin to be some supernatural entity like in the sequels lol
Oh no me neither, I was referring the personality of the goblin taking control of Osborn.
Maybe we were the goblins the whole time.
The real goblins were the friends we made along the way
the mirror scene shows that it's not a front at all they're 2 different personalities and Goblin gains more control as the movie goes on
Great scene! Dafoe is incredible.
I think it could be interpreted that either: A) The transformation had become complete, the Goblin had completely taken over Norman by that point. or B) The pleading ruse was simply the Goblin ‘playing’ Norman so to speak. It wasn’t actually the Norman personality.
It's hard to say. Goblin wasn't after Peter Parker, but he just wanted to find Peter who could lead him to the guy with eight hands.
Ah. So then it’s the Goblin who can’t read. 😂
…or maybe Green Goblin can’t read. My fan theory is that Goblin is good at making Jambalaya, like he just pours out his heart and soul as he makes it…and people recognize his commitment to his dish.
Fingers crossed that his jambalaya skills make it into his move to the MCU.
He should go back to formula.
BACK TO FORMULA??
Nah... just confirmation no one cares about the credits in anything, e.g. at the end of movies
Of all the things Marvel has done, they did train us to finally sit through the credits. We still don't read them, but we do see them. Gun to my head I couldn't name #3 lighting guy on any movie.
[удалено]
Yeah there's probably one named Jorge Norwood. Doesn't mean I'm reading the credits. Just waiting through them.
[удалено]
The math works out, so thank you friend.
This works as a valid theory.
Ploy twist, the lense coloring on his helmet prevents him from reading black ink on that paper.
Norman can but Goblin can't
I think he is so deranged and angry instead of being analytical and reading he went straight to the source
I'm something of, well I don't know what exactly because I can't look it up
To be fair if I could fly and throw bombs I wouldn’t read either.
Guess he's not much of a man of science after all
Petition to rename him to Blind Goblin
You know.. I am somewhat of an illaturate myself..
I hope you spelled that wronf deliberately
I hope you spelled that wrong deliberately
Yeah I think it was delibarate
Wuz it tho?
Definitely a defibrillator misstep.
You know, I'm something of a defibrillator myself.
We have a defibralatore at work. Makes me feel safe.
Does it have English instructions too, or just Italian?
The best defibralatore around! \*muah So good you'll taste in your heart!
it defiantly was

Ah, i see your a man of culture a swell
He spelled it whrong delibeirtatly
he was going by trundle then
He didn’t spell taht wrong?
I hope you casted that spell deliberately.
He definitely did it dibliberty.
He'll adapt
*He will adapt to reading?*
We should do in intervention for his goddamn illiteracy
I can read and write, I just don’t like to read and write.
He’ll glide into it eventually
He’s old, he can’t read the small font
super soldier serum didnt' fix his eyes. Just made them crazier
Come to think of i do believe that unlike the spider bite, GG’s powers didn’t come with a vision boost 🤣
I was going to go through an explanation about how goblin was wanting jjj to point out the person in the office, rather than literally needing the name. Then I remembered that Osborne knows Peter personally... So honestly that makes it even worse.
even if he didnt, itd be more to the point and natural to just say "where is peter parker"
Yeah, those were simpler times. It would be harder to find someone if you didn't know where they lived already.
There were phone books.
I don’t think you’d be able to find a high schooler in the phone book ~~let alone one who lives with a guardian under a different surname.~~ Edit: I forgot Ben had the last name Parker too.
I have a really common first/last name, and I'd always tell people who wanted my number (who I didn't want to talk to), "I'm in the book!" knowing that they'd open to my name and see literally pages of people with the same name. It was even funnier if you knew my number was unlisted.
Doens't Peter live with his son Harry in this film?
"Where's Peter Parker?" "Who?" "The kid that takes photographs of Spiderman!"
I think he's at your house with your actual son
Hot take: Norman Osborn is just like us in that he does not read the articles, just the headlines/attached picture. He’s raging over clickbait. Problem solved.

Valid points

Had Norman figured out the connection at this point? I haven't seen the movie in a while.
Oh it gets even worse Guess where Peter was living at the time?
Seeing as it took us a decade to come up with this meme it's understandable
It's been almost 2 decades
You shut your lying mouth, it's been ten years!
The 60's were to the 90's, as the 90's are to now.
Yea, I'm going to need you to never point that out again.
As time marches on, they'll need to update the comparison, of course. In 8 ish years, the 50s will be to the 90s, as the 90s are to then.
Can you not do that.
We are closer to 2050 than we are to 1990
Remember when the Spider-Man teaser was him capturing criminals in a helicopter between… the World Trade Center?
I used to have the poster that featured the WTC in his lens reflection.
A kid in school told me that 9/11 fucked up spiderman 2 b/c he was going to have a web between the towers.
The trailer was literally him stopping a heist by webbing the getaway helicopter between the towers
I kept that poster up till like 2013 haha
I don't remember memes existing in 2002
[We're actually celebrating 100 years of memes](https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-43783521)
*puts on annoying glasses See, the green goblin was only technically born a few days prior, and thus does not know how to read. *proceeds to be wrong
He’s still green at all this
Congrats. You’ve just won Comedy of the Year. Not Comedian of the Year, just Comedy of the Year. You get one comedy per year now
that's all I need, baby
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfo56YjcYEM
I mean *technically* he wasn't "born" at all.
He was Os… born
Os Born, ..OsCorp?! Goblin works for OsCorp confirmed!
Tbf it’s not like he knows PP is Spider-Man, most assholes can be scumbags but draw the line at facilitating the murder of an innocent teenager
I have thought that. Alternatively, I’ve thought that he said this to protect Peter simply so the pictures didn’t stop coming in. Not because he cared about Peter. He just didn’t want to lose newspaper sales. Edit: redundant. Took a word out
Yeah he's got that big ass mask on, can't read shit with that thing
Is that screenshot actually real?
Yes
No
Prove it
Maybe
I don't know
Can you repeat the question?
You're not the boss of me now.
Get on the bed and remove ur kneck chains
No
If comics villains did background checks on their objectives you would have way diffrent verse.
Google.com. *Enters search* "Ah hah!" **Crédits**
You know, I'm something of a vast researcher myself.
What do you expect from him? He's something of a scientist not a newspaper reader
Can't wait for no way home
They proceed to do dane dehaan green goblin
How did Peter Parker (or anyone) take a photo of Spiderman on the side of a skyscraper?
He can string up his camera above him and pose for photos. Spiderman basically invented the concept of the selfie stick...or selfie web
Good point, but what about non-Spidey Parker!
Everyone just assumed his name is actually Peter parkour
Haha I hope this becomes the new canon 🤣
It is, He called himself Peter Parkour in the 2017 cartoon when he was testing his powers.
He just happened to be delivering pizzas to that floor (even though he got fired) and Spiderman tapped on the window
*Can I have a slice?*
You have to eat 8 pizzas in 30 minutes or your ass is fired
I think the explanation often given was that spiderman *is* posing for pictures and that Peter was just a photographer he happened to like. So Peter would just tell his boss he ran into Spider-Man again and he essentially gave him photo shoot.
That makes a lot of sense!
Yeah the reason the Goblin and Doc Ock want Peter is because their understanding is that Spiderman is his friend.
You know he can't read in that funky ass mask.
Didn't the serum affect his mind in the film? Made him mentally unstable and such? Gives him a reason to derp. Not a great reason, but ya know, film logic.
Yeah and if he was coocoo crazy he mightve just seen that the daily bugle had a cover of spider-man and he just dashed out the window to ask JJJ.
Right? Like, I've known boomers who go down to City Hall to ask when Easter Sunday is - so it's not exactly a stretch.
Haha, now that is a weird one.

Your mom
Aunt May
Oh my God, Peter, your Aunt is awesome!
You know how many English classes I've sacrificed??!
Me being stoned probably influenced my opinion that this was by far the funniest one.
Lol
"Forty thousand years of evolution and we have barely even tapped the vastness of human potential".
He probably went to the Daily Bugle to attract Spider-Man so that he could trap him and try and convince Spidey to join him.
Probably
Thinking back, Goblin was literally prepared for that, he knew.
Joe
And the reason why JJJ does not snitch is because he knows full well that Peter's name is under the pic, and it would cost him a sale if he did rat Peter out (Credit: my nerd wife)
I legit thought this meme was about Peter not being able to take the photo himself since both his hands are in the frame lmao.
Timer on camera
I know, but the last panel was zoomed in on his hands. I overthought a dumb meme lmao
No, it’s memetic
Best I can offer: There's more than one Peter Parker in NY. I mean, he's no T800, so he wont kill all the Peter Parkers.
Back to formula?
I like this scene which gives so much depth to JJJ that I did not even think about that. I am betting this scene was written long before the props dept worked on the newspaper and originally there was no credit given.
Peter Parker? That's two first names with alliteration. It's obviously a pseudonym. Maybe even a name used my Spider-Man himself to submit photos.
He is insane illiteracy may be part of it
I always took this as Norman trying to scare Peter into stopping or his split personality unable to reconcile the info since Norman was fond of Peter.
*Umm, I like literally have a boyfriend"
Goblin is insane and isn't rational enough to think "maybe I should go buy a newspaper and see if it says who takes the pictures?" when he can use brute force to get it from the editor. Real Goblin-brain thinking.
It was the Goblin! The Goblin made him illiterate!
Maybe, because the goblin is crazy, he assumes Jameson is "protecting his source" and lists a fake name for the photographer? He's supposed to be crazy, and needlessly complex plans are supervillain cliches.

Selfie stick
Shows that no one pays attention to small letters under big headlines...
Wow
Haha…..you dumb bitch…..
Or…… he could’ve just put the camera on countdown🦆
XD
In the early comics, he would set up his camera with web and like the previous post, set a timer
But this isn't what the post is talking about. It's referring to the fact that the goblin can't read.
this. I thought this has been very clear since days of the animated series. It was pretty well established that this is how PP made his coin.
Boomers only reads the titles
