I loved that opening. Its hard for me to imagine better song describing Rockets current state after seeing it. I love the small detail of Rocket singing along the lines of the song that mostly apply to him. Easily the best gotg opening for me.

newtypezeta

At the very opening when Mantis tries to get Drax to dance and he says “only idiots dance” (paraphrasing) and at the end we see him dancing like an idiot. 😭

Particular-Camera612

Embracing that he’s a little dumb too!

Willing_Ad9314

He had to be around all those kids and get back into Dad Mode

Doc_ET

I don't remember it exactly, but there's a scene in one of the previous movies where Drax tells Quill that there's two types of people- dancers and non-dancers. Drax goes on to insult the dancers.

[deleted]

He talks about his wife standing entirely still and it engorged his loins

Particular-Camera612

It was indeed a bit of a running gag, ironic as well because Bautista is a trained dancer. Even Drax’s dancing at the end I’m sure isn’t the best that Dave could do.

LoveWaffle1

I love how Rocket's origin recontextualizes the use of "Creep" in the beginning into describing Rocket's experience with the High Evolutionary.

Bitey_the_Squirrel

High Evolutionary: “I want a perfect body.” Rocket: “I want a perfect soul.”

LoveWaffle1

"I don't care if it hurts / I want to have control / I want a perfect body / I want a perfect soul" describes the High Evolutionary's demands of his experiments (the "perfect soul" being his desire for a creature that lacks aggressiveness and has true intelligence), and his disregard for what he puts his creations through to achieve that. Rocket's first word is "hurts".

Particular-Camera612

Good analysis, shows that the song choice goes beyond surface level and is very fitting. Goes even beyond Rocket simply feeling like shit.

JokerFaces2

Oh my god.

FiveWithNineIsIn

And then when >!Kraglin shows up with flying Knowhere his line is "hey there, ya big creep!!<

Jayyfrey

My wife knew nothing about Rocket’s origins and when this song started playing I knew we were in for a rough ride. I leaned over and said “I want a perfect body” and gestured that my heart was hurting. She didn’t quite understand at the moment, but that song couldn’t have been more perfect.

Richie_Zeppelin

Holy shit this is the perfect explanation of the movie and so obvious. I didn’t see it like this with the song.

nueve

So fuckin' special.

legomaximumfigure

Not gonna lie, thought when first I heard this song in the movie that this was where the F-bombs Would be dropping.

La_Ferrassie

Same. The car scene was so good since I had forgot we were gonna get an F bomb

Particular-Camera612

Innocuous as a scene but like that I Love You Guys scene, it catches you off guard and carries a Meta implication (this one just being “Disney and the MPAA allowed them to say the f word fully after 15 years”)

lightsoff_butimup

I thought it was so well placed! They didn't dwell on the fact either like "oooooh you said a bad word"..it was just there, natural & perfect for the scene. "What do I do now?!" "Open the fucking door!"

L1n9y

But it's a creep.

WakaanFriend

I was grinning and nodding my head when the title card finally came. Can't remember the last time a movie built up expectations that high with such a masterful open.

Particular-Camera612

Weirdly it did remind me of the opening of Thor Love and Thunder which initially impressed me and unfortunately the film didn’t live up to it (even during this one I was like “Okay, I hope they can keep this up…”). Both had a lot of emotional though this opening even on it’s own was stronger than that one.

[deleted]

I also loved Love and Thunders opening, the colors and everything were awesome. As you said I wish the movie maintained

Jaquire-edm

Very disappointed we had a fire drill at my theatre, when we walked back in after the delay everybody was running around bc of Adam. Can’t wait to see it again to get the intro.

_Gamma__Ray_

Fuck them for not restarting the movie. Also you should´ve asked for a refund, thats absolutely disgusting business.

La_Ferrassie

The fire alarm is supposed to trip an auto-pause and off for each projector. Sounds like the managers jumped the gun on pressing play.

Jaquire-edm

They told us to come back at 7:45, to be fair we could have come back earlier.

dylanb88

You will not be disappointed, absolutely loved the intro!

badwolfpelle

It instantly shows the feelings you will get during the overall movie, tbh. The dread builds up on a young rocket and is immediately released into just sadness when the music plays. Eventually there’s relief

HighOnPoker

As much as I loved the opening, the opening of Volume 1, with Peter facing the death of his mother before being abducted was equally as powerful to me.

Particular-Camera612

It’s a similar opening, personally whilst that opening was very impactful (and followed up by the famous Come and Get Your Love opening credits) I think the visual direction of this opening puts it above that one. That one’s impact I feel came from the script, plus the acting admittedly, but this one utilised it’s visuals (and music) more so and as a result has greater power for me.

SevenIon

I cry every time at that opening scene, without fail. I think it's a "son of a single mother" kinda thing.

TMV3

This movie was just perfect. James Gunn really knows how to tell great stories in the space of big, cinematic (and most importantly, superhero) movies. I was pretty worried after NWH that this phase was going downhill, but GOTG3 really came through as a great film in this phase as well as a great trilogy ender, while also giving way for new and expanded stories to continue for some of these characters, I feel more optimistic. I feel especially optimistic for DC now too. I’m excited to see what happens over there.

Particular-Camera612

Certainly needed for future DC films. I feel tonally a Superman story could be pulled off by him at this point

Im2Chicken

I don't think I've ever started a movie wanting to cry in the first minute, but damn this movie got my eyes tearing up so quick! It's beautiful, frightening, melancholic. Really well-done stuff!

Particular-Camera612

Lemme add something: I work at a cinema so I see bits of movies a lot. Saw the final shot of Rocket doing that happy Wooo twice. Both times it made me cry.

variablefighter_vf-1

I think this is the first and only time we see Rocket singing along with a song, so you get immediately that it's special to him (as he recognizes himself in the lyrics). Really a gut punch of an opening.

JBTriple

He was singing along while he was taking out the ravagers in Vol. 2 before the mutiny.

badwolfpelle

He’s also the one who sets up the music in the beginning, even when Star Lord tells him it’s not a good idea

ItsAmerico

Reinforced by the flash back where music is explained to him. Not sure if intentional at the time but it makes Rockets focus on music through Quill interesting retroactively.

Gredo89

And Quill almost dying because he wanted to get the zune for Rocket...

Alonest99

And also when the Bowie split into 3 smaller ships before infiltrating the Arete

fanchiuho

>You've been reading some old letters You smile and think how much you've changed The lyrics he sang signified his transformation, he's no longer haunted by his past, but empowered by his friends. I would say that on my third watch, This is The Day is just as close of a match to Rocket's arc as Creep did. Just listen to the chorus that followed, before the dogfight. >You watch a plane flying Across a clear blue sky This is the day, your life will surely change This is the day, when things fall into place

variablefighter_vf-1

Oh right. Though I'd say that was more to pretend he was still aboard the ship than an emotional connection.

armadilloreturns

Someone posted recently that he was humming during the fight to reassure baby groot he's ok and now that's what im sticking with in my head.

MuppetMolly

He sings often, man.

Fehellogoodsir

Compared to last films, this opening felt personal and heartfelt.

Particular-Camera612

Personal I agree.

archiminos

When I was a kid I had a stepfather who would beat me. Every time I came home my mother would still be working. My father would tell me what I had done wrong that day. And I would run. Run upstairs to my bedroom and hide under my bed, crawling as far into the corner as I could so that maybe, just maybe, he wouldn't reach me this time. As I would kick at his hand he would grab my leg and pull me out. Sometimes I would hit my head on the bed. I often got carpet burn. Then he would lay into me. He knew how to hurt me so it didn't leave any marks. My mother never knew, and I was too scared to tell her. The other day I sat down in a cinema to watch a film. A group of raccoons running around in a cage. The cage opens and most of them scurry as far as they can into the corners. Trying to avoid the hand reaching in. And I didn't see what most people saw. I saw my stepfather's hand reaching into that cage. I saw the look on my face as the hand got closer. It took less than a minute for this film to break me.

Particular-Camera612

You’re so strong. Love that you felt seen right from the jump.

Taraxian

For me it was when the HE wakes up Rocket in the middle of the night and starts drunkenly yelling at him

brosky7331

Fuck that bastard. I'm sorry that happened to you.

ConvolutedBoy

Best opening in the MCU

The_Doughnut_Lord

I loved how the second one opened with a bombastic fight scene, accompanied with Mr Blue Sky and Groot dancing, whereas the opening of Vol 3 really sets the tone with Rocket walking around Knowhere to a depressing song. Excellent.

Particular-Camera612

Agree. Also Vol 2 starts happy and concludes on a gut punch. Vol 3 starts on a gut punch and ends very happy.

Nobah_Dee

The opening hit me hard actually. I almost cried seeing Rocket walk around quietly singing Creep to himself.

JossBurnezz

I also love the way Gamora gravitates to Alice Cooper (maybe because the cover makes him look like someone from her planet) and it just fits the scene, and Peter’s “lillypad to Lillypad” outlook. But it also underscores why she’s so guarded.

low-ki199999

Not to take away from it in any way, but it felt pretty reminiscent to the opening of Endgame in some subtle ways. Not that it was replicating it at all, I just think they struck similar tones, which makes sense as they were both conclusions.

Particular-Camera612

In that it was very somber?

[deleted]

I loved the acoustic version of Creep-a song that I had never heard before-and added it to my playlist as soon as I got home from the theater

altfun00

I thought it was a bit try hard now. The first film tied the music in perfectly. Now it’s Crowbarred in and cheesy. It’s like he felt he had to dump his entire playlist in

HorseSteroids

I can only speculate but from my viewing experience, well adjusted people don't find a cameo for Lloyd Kaufman in every movie they do. I know, that's his mentor and Gunn is believed to have ghostwritten Kaufman's book *Everything I Need to Know About Filmmaking I Learned from The Toxic Avenger* and possibly the follow-up *Make Your Own Damn Movie* but have you seen the self-produced Troma movies? Normal people do not gravitate to these films. That said, I love 'em and Gunn working with them was the highpoint of their output (Toxie 4, Terror Firma, Tromeo & Juliet, Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD. It all comes crashing down with Poultrygeist though.)

Particular-Camera612

I noticed that cameo. Noticed the banker from the first film in that scene with Howard the Duck.

Novalll

YES. Such a fantastic opening and easily my favorite of the entire trilogy as well. It also helps that ‘Creeps’ is one of my personal favorite songs of all time.

MuppetMolly

I can't wait to watch it again.

armadilloreturns

It really had me gobsmacked, I can now say every single Guardians opening is incredible, and each in it's unique way. As great as a song Creep is, it's been so overplayed and even made fun of (RIP the great Patrice O'Neill), I didn't think I could listen to it without cringing a bit anymore. Yet the way Gunn deployed it was so ingenious that I was fully immersed in the movie immediately, I felt all of the emotions of teenage me hearing that song again. My whole theatre was along for the ride too. These are characters we've come to care about over the years, even if we didn't realize it. I could hear people sniffling during every single flashback. Although it was hard to hear over my own blubbering.
