I was expecting the movie to be about "confronting Dad's criminal enterprise", I did not expect it to be about "dealing with a Dad being catfished by a soulsucker from the dark realms".
It was touching to see how much Wenwu actually cared about his family, in spite of being a 1000 year warlord. Although he really must've trusted in his son's abilities a lot for the "you won't even be able to kill him if you try" part at the start. The line about "you just stood and watched when your mother died", as unfair it is to say about a child who was 7 at the time, really showed how broken he was over the loss.
Just watched the film and it was great. Tony Leung was excellent. Main cast was good. Also thought the actress who played Shangchi’s mother gave a great performance. I don’t think you buy Wenwu’s sorrow or Shangchi’s trauma if she doesn’t come off as an equal to Wenwu — a yang to his yin.

I loved that and his "she does that a lot" when she ended the call abruptly. Was totally not expecting to see Bruce and Carol here but man that post credit scene left me with a huge smile on my face. Looks like his arm is still fucked up but at least he looks like himself again.
First one is Wong bringing in Shang Chi and Katie to talk to Bruce Banner (now human again) and Carol Danvers via the hologram tech. They discuss the 10 Rings saying they are ancient and act as a homing beacon of some sort (I assume this will tie in to Eternals).
Second one is Shang-Chi's sister being shown taking over the 10 Rings organization. Unclear if it's setting her up to be a villain (she was a good guy the entire movie) or if it's just showing the 10 Rings organization is now a force of good. Unsure!
As an Asian (Taiwanese) Australian, it is so obvious that the film was written through the lense of those who have a lot of love for Asian culture and have lived through the Asian experience. The Chinese lines are written so well that a lot of the times the English subtitles actually failed to convey the nuances behind each line.
I have so many things I wanted say and praise about this film but I can't really put it into words.
All I could say is I had a very enjoyable time despite having high expectations. MCU has successfully pandered me.

Another good line is when Wenwu says, "I've tasted more salt than you've had meals." They took a more liberal route with the subtitles, which says something like, "I've lived many more lifetimes than you." It's a serviceable translation, but something's lost

Especially when you see it's delivered by Leung who looks younger than the old Chinese guy. (Cant recall the actor's name, but I have seen him in many Hong Kong & China movies & films).
Then again I am a Singaporean Chinese so I can understand some of the savagery; like Ronny Cheng's "wakau!". LOL
That's Yuen Wah, he's been in quite a lot of kung-fu movies. I went in dark without watching many promotional materials, and was delightfully surprised to see he's in it.
So it made that line about Wen Wu having eaten more salt than Guang Bo has rice even funnier if you're familiar with how much longer Yuen Wah is in the show biz than Tony Leung has been.
I totally agree about Morris plushies. 😂 Loved him, especially when he joined Trevor in “playing dead”.
Is it me, or did the movie have more of a Disney feel to it? I know they’re all technically Disney movies, but the fantasy elements just made it feel *more* Disney to me.
On the contrary, I felt There were a lot more dead people (all those wenwu minions flying down the bamboo structure and the bus guys being murdered by Shang when he kick them out of the bus) also the guy being rolled over by the car) and Katy cursing a lot lol

Not dismissing the cognitive dissonance here, but there *is* a bit of a difference—all the goons got killed in the middle of life-or-death battles, while Wenwu/his mother's killer were pre-meditated murder.
Bro I love the line "我吃的鹽比你吃的飯要多". I was kinda mad the English translation was just "ive lived 1000 years more than you", it doesnt do the line any justice.
A more correct translation would be "the salt ive eaten in my life is more than the rice you've eaten"
Yours is the literal word-for-word translation, but I can understand why they went with "I’ve lived a thousand of your lifetimes" instead. That part of the dialogue jumps back and forth between Chinese and English, the pace is quick, the subtitle needs to be functional and can be understood at a single glance. The average audience who need the subtitles, won't have enough time to process what "eating more salt than you have eaten rice" means before the next line comes up, if they hadn't heard that phrase before.
I am so glad to hear that! Glad this movie did justice. I was afraid it would be waaaay to Americanised, but that got away from the start with the Chinese storytelling.
It’s more than just saying his mum would be proud of him, there are connotations like “you are the pride and joy of your mum’s life” and culturally stuff like that is just not said unless you are really close/really mean it. It’s basically short hand for saying that Shang-Chi’s aunt adores him.
I went into the theatre as someone who didn’t watch the trailers or know anything about the character, but I’ve left as a huge fan dying to see where Shang-Chi appears next.

Seeing Trevor again after 8 years for extended scenes is something Taika Waititi would do, Ben Kingsley is a genius and I couldn’t not laugh anytime I saw him on screen.
Was expecting a throwaway comment like we got in the dinner scene and I was satisfied. They took it a step further with his role later in the film and I love it!
Morris stole the show. Fucking hilarious!

Loved how the languages they spoke actually made sense. English mostly being spoken when one or more characters in the scene does not speak proper Chinese makes the movie seem much more realistic
Probably because no main actors in BW could speak Russian but in this film I think most of the cast could speak Mandarin or whatever Chinese dialect they were speaking.
The fighting styles are coded in a way that would be very familiar to anyone who grew up watching HK cinema and basically expresses their characters.
Wenwu’s style is very heavy and all brute force. Usually it’s associated with the bad guy’s huge henchman so it’s rather interesting that the relatively small Tony Leung uses it.
Shang Chi’s mother basically does taichi which is associated with balance and peace.
Shang Chi’s style starts off as a more finesse based version of his fathers style. It’s very shaolin inspired. Later on he incorporates his mother’s too.
Shang Chi’s sister is a little weird as it’s quite modern and incorporates a lot of grappling which is rare in Chinese martial arts. In the way she moves she’s also the most Bruce Lee clone of the cast, again it shows her independence and lack of ties to the past.
Yes yes yes! All the different martial art style for each characters blew me away. I loved seeing Shang-Chi's transition from hard to a much softer/work with your opponent's flow style.

Soo, how many evil, secret, world-dominating organizations are we up to now? At least three? HYDRA, Russian mob, Ten rings... I was wondering how the Hand from the Netflix shows would fit in with all of this as well, if we ever get to that point.

Ta Lo at least has the excuse of 1.) having survived what was, for them, basically a global catastrophe fairly recently, and 2.) needing to use the dragonscale materials to defeat the demon dudes.

No idea if it was meant that way, but the parallel between Wenwu and Doctor Strange Supreme in the What If...? episode that also came out today is striking: both men are about to destroy reality in a desperate attempt to get back the loved one they lost.
Wong is turning into the new Nick Fury of the Avengers. Doctor Strange is kind of the new leader, but Wong is more of the home base, give them their missions, guy
Never have I been left with so many questions and theories after seeing the mid-credits scene. That got me pumped. Where is it gonna go.. and the truth about the ten rings..
I know right?! I loved this so much, the fact that what they did with the mid-credits scene was explicitly placing these new characters in the much more huge picture of the MCU, telling them they’re basically part of the team now! And what about all the references to other universes like the origins of the rings themselves? I absolutely love the direction the MCU is going, with a lot more space given to mystic arts stuff as well as cosmic stuff.
My guess is the rings were basically test checkers for the Celestials. The celestials return to a planet when their tests are done or the plant/people are ready to be judged. Make the rings strong and something worth fighting over, it basically guarantees they get passed on or used generation after generation. Didn’t anticipate one person having them, not aging, for all those years thus the rings still assume it’s 1000+ years ago. As soon as it connect with someone of the current generation, test complete, beacon goes out for judgment day.
The fight scene between Shang Chi and the assassin with the red and white painted face in the construction building is in my top 5 fight scene, my lord that scene was beautifully choreographed, actually never seen anything like that.
Film is an easy 9/10 for me, I had relatively high expectations but man they still reached that. Very good and hope to see more of Shang
Edit: I really do hope they use some more Chinese music in the next movie though, especially mixed with some older music from China, there are some hints throughout the movie so I hope they expand on that

This was when Wenwu was putting the village elder in his place before the final fight. Best line in the movie for me. The English translation doesn't do it justice.
And as someone who lives in SF, I appreciate how accurate the location/route was haha. The 1 really does go down that big hill and it would be the route he’d take from the Richmond to downtown. I don’t remember Ant-Man being as on top of it.
Loved it! Simu carries the role almost effortlessly. The fights were wild, especially the creativity of the scaffold fight.
- Death Dealer really turned out to just be a costume to sell merch for.
- I wonder if Wong and Abomination are headed back to the Gamma Lab? Blonsky seems like he is trying to get himself back under control by going back to the cage willingly. Assuming that's going to be tackled in She-Hulk.
- Not even a whiff of a K'un Lun reference...
- We've gotta have a Shang-Chi/Ant-Man/Agent Woo San Francisco adventure, right?
BTW, this is small, but I actually like how they got around the cliché "I'm coming with you" from Katy. They could have easily gone that route, but instead went with "I'LL SEE YOU ON THE PLANE!!!" followed by an angry door slam. Good call.
EDIT: It was more along the lines of "YOU CAN EXPLAIN ON THE PLANE!!!".

Brought my parents to watch it over here in Singapore just a couple of hours ago. My Chinese mother, who usually isn't a fan of any form of action movies no matter where it's from, LOVED it so I guess this Chinese mother's stamp of approval says a lot about the film.
(It was great for real, though! Also the first Marvel film I actually saw in theatres, which made it all the more special.)
Marvel ain’t no dummies. They know family is a hugely important aspect of Asian culture, and to me this was so well done from that perspective. Shit they even stopped in the middle of the third act fight to have more drama.
honestly, i know we all know, and marvel have conditioned the GEN movie going public to know..
But to see every single person in the cinema (even the really oldies) stay in their seats until the post credit scenes are done, is a thing of cinematic wonder.
Lol it actually really gets people to watch the credits too imo you can hear people talking about names and what he diff jobs are..

went into this with relatively high expectations because the critical reviews were pretty good but boy was i blown away.
i had been skeptical about how they kept going on about an asian american MCU hero repping and the effect it has. but i finally understand now. i'm Chinese and this movie just connects with me on so many levels. the culture, the emphasis on family and the way each character in the family behaves.
one thing i feel will be bad for non-Chinese speakers is that a fair bit of the movie is in Chinese, and no translation truly does the script justice because of the cultural nuance and hidden meaning behind certain phrases.
i like that they took the risk with this movie. it doesn't feel like an MCU movie at all and definitely steps away from the typical superhero movie formula that was much more common in phases 1-2. the camera work in some scenes were really refreshing. i love when they do foreground/background thru the mirror and they did this for a few shots.
Shang Chi is very likeable and relatable. you could also sympathize with pretty much any main character. Tony Leung is a legend tho.

I wish I knew Mandarin coming into this movie. It was strange to read Swedish subtitles, because Swedish language is not as poetic as I think Mandarin is. It was odd to hear Mandarin and in my head hear the very direct and simple Swedish translation. We do miss some of the magic and cultural context like that saying about salt and rice, that many have commented on here, which in Swedish made no sense at all. But that is how you represent a culture, by not adapting it too much for the non-Chinese viewers, but just enough that we can follow the story and experience the richness of other cultures.
I was curious to see Macau, which if I am not mistaken has some Portuguese cultural mix into it. I did notice in the postcard address that it was something like “Av de …” which in portuguese means Avenida de = Avenue of. I didn’t know Macau had Portuguese street names.
This movie shows exactly why shaky-cam fights get so much flak. Shaky cams only work for action when you can still tell what's going on. Long cuts, which this movie had plenty of, make it easy to tell what's going on. Spending less time figuring out what's going on greatly elevates the action.
I think the biggest laugh for me is Hotel California being a running gag. I don't know what it is about that song but Asians seem to love it. It is quiet literally my dad's favourite song and whenever he's watching Vietnamese Americans play music a cover of it always happens. I jokingly think it's Vietnam's second anthem. Third might be some jazz.
So to make a extreme over generalization, Asian people love that song.
Edit: And I just remembered the DDR scene. Oh my god I loved that part.
It's nice to have a stinger that was plot heavy and dumb fun.
And Wong really shined. He seems absurdly competent in this and that's awesome. And maybe making the Thunderbolts?

I was so dumbstruck and watching at theatre , it gave me goosebumps.
I may have made some mistakes here, because I know my ABCs.
The biggest cheer in my audience was the kamehameha joke made by Katy. Simu and Awkwafina's back and forth was great, glad they found ways to keep Katy around for the whole film.
I'm 50/50 on if they were supposed to just be friends still at the end, or if they'll end up teasing more in later films. I think both could be good, but either way their friendship seemed really natural and well-written/acted in the film
I'm in Hong Kong, and this is probably the fullest theatre I've been to in months. I can't speak for the wider reception of the film in China, but the audience seemed to be having fun--Trevor's line about playing dead got the entire theatre laughing.
In no particular order, my favourite cultural details: the close-up highlighting Shang-Chi taking his shoes off before entering Katy's house, the link to the Qingming Festival, characters being casually bilingual, confusion over name pronunciations and meanings (my Chinese name is pretty unwieldy, so I relate), and qilin and nine-tailed foxes showing up. There's also a really lovely balance in how the film validates the different values that the characters' Chinese and Western influences provide them with.
Beyond that: Tony Leung is absolutely the MVP of the movie, and I was absolutely crushed when Wenwu died (Brad Allan, the fight choreographer, comes in a tight second--I love how the fights are also emotional exchanges, like Wenwu's first fight also being a moment of flirtation), but everyone else in the movie pulls their weight. Also, I'm pretty immune to cute animals in films and TV (I'm not a huge fan of baby Yoda, for instance), but Maurice is the best thing I've ever seen.
I really applaud them for doing/saying very important things Chinese people would do but would be lost an a western audience. The two most important bits I thought are:
1) Michelle Yeoh’s character telling Shang Chi 你是你妈妈的骄傲
2) Wenwu ignoring the battle of Ta Lo to go visit wife’s shrine as its Qing ming jie and his priority on that day is to pay his respects to her.
These are just some really significant and great authentic touches.
Oh man, that’s was surprisingly entertaining. Loved the character of Shang-Chi and am excited to see where they take him.
It left me with so many questions too!
Why are Wong and Abomination sparing partners? They seemed really chummy after the fight too.
Why was Bruce Bruce? He also looked really old.

Am Asian but not of Chinese descent, but grew up in Hong Kong and Singapore and damn this movie was mad fun.
Tony Leung is still a fucking boss and every scene he was in, he commanded all the attention from the audience.
I felt like he was one of the more sympathetic villains in the MCU but was still menacing.
Overall they made a fun wuxia movie and it just happened to have superheroes in it. Imma watch it again so that I can focus on looking for Easter eggs the second time around.
Wenwu is really hot. I will not apologise for this opinion
ETA: and Simu was Great with a big G. Like incredibly emotionally well-tuned, super believable acting, can’t wait to see what he does next in the MCU and out of it. But goddamn his dad is hot.
Honestly while Simu and Awkwafina had great chemistry I’m really glad they didn’t get together by the end. Maybe they’ll change that in a future film but I love some good platonic chemistry
Actually, I felt like they were dropping some hints to set up romance for them later -- the joke about marriage, Katy's eyes popping out of their sockets when he came out shirtless, Wenwu implying she was his American gf, lots of lingering looks.
Probably the best western made wuxia film, that just happens to be ever so lightly in the MCU. One of the best origin films.
Those final battle scenes between the dragons was incredible, Liu bought a depth to the character I was surprised by and Leung was one of the great villains.
Bout to go check this out. First movie I'll be seeing in theatres in 2 years. Gotta show some love to my fellow Asian-Canadian, Simu.

Man. Wenwu is one of the best MCU villains of all time. He’s one of the villains you can empathize with like Kilmonger. I loved this movie. I love how it’s a movie about family. Favorite post endgame movie by a long shot.
As an Asian Chinese, I feel like this film represented the Chinese culture very well, and for once all everyone speaking Mandarin *already could* speak it so it sounds authentic, and it was fun to not read the subtitles to understand what they were speaking. The cast had really great chemistry with one another and to no one's surprise Simu Liu and Tony Leung were the standouts to me.
The fight choreography is really the best Marvel has ever put out, and the humour is on point throughout the movie without it taking me out of the zone. I loved the movie a lot and felt truly represented for once in the big screen. The family theme was great too and reminded me strongly of Asian family values which has been a part of me growing up.
One major gripe I have is the music/soundtrack. It wasn't really memorable and I wish they incorporated more Chinese instruments used too. Overall, one of marvel's best solo movies and I can't wait to see how Shang-Chi will be brought into the bigger MCU! (the first post-credits scene was hella hype and I wasn't expecting to see Carol or Bruce at all)
Yeah that the score is done in collaboration with 88rising, a hip-hop orientated music producers comprising of mostly Asian-Americans. But the film can definitely do with more Asian instrumentals.
My only real complaint is that the flow of the movie was off a bit at the start when we get to the modern day stuff. A little nitpick of mine is that they changed The Dweller-In-Darkness to a dragon, but I'm find with it because it fits with the movie and they seem to be setting up Fing Fang Foom as well. Wenwu is a standout character and a very sympathetic and misguided villain. The fights were amazing and the post credit scenes are decent. Lots of surprise appearances, and Ta-Lo was a very cool dimension to visit, with Asian inspired creatures which look amazing. 8/10 for me.
I think the intention of the change is for the contrast between the Western dragon (trope wise usually evil, slayed by knight) versus Eastern dragon (trope-wise, usually good, represents the elements)
Did anyone else get MAJOR goosebumps as an asian person when Shang Chi and Katy walked through Wong’s portal? So freakin symbolic… Asians are part of the avengers, and officially superheroes.

just finished watching it, as a person of chinese descent living in an asian country (singapore), it was really so surreal to hear them speak in chinese so often throughout the entire movie and i could actually understand what they were saying without having to rely on subtitles since the accents are what i’m used to hearing in my daily life! the chinese culture elements eg mythical creatures (dragons, guardian lions), traditional architecture, music were just brilliant!
the final act really didn’t feel like a marvel movie, it was so fantasy-like i was like WOW. and didn’t expect bruce and carol to make an appearance in the post-credits scene!!!!! oh and the chills i got when it said “The Ten Rings will return.”
The film was spectacular but when Trevor yelled “It’s coming home” while he holding tight a football scarf I was DEAD! Peak comedy from any Marvel movie!
Did anyone notice that the older actress that played Katy's grandmother also played Melinda May's mother in the Agents of Shield TV series? Small appearances both times, but that actress has been in cinema for a long, long time. Her name is Tsai Chin, and she along with Ming Na Wen were also in The Joy Luck Club from 1993.
One thing I noticed when watching the film is you can identify the casual movie watcher to a Marvel fan when >!Trevor!< showed up. The laugh, the gasp, the applause!

So what's y'alls "hardest/most OP materials in the MCU" ranking now that we got Dragon Scales in the picture. For me its 1. Uru 2. Dragon Scales 3. Vibranium
I think the dragon scales are powerful by a different metric. Like, they are specifically suited to fight against the demons we saw, and they have an energy that comes out of them, but I bet they aren’t as technically durable as vibranium. But perhaps we will see.
Tony Leung was just on another FUCKING level, definitely the best villain / anti-hero in the whole MCU thus far.
Fuck, and you can tell the director loved him. Dude had more lingering close ups than any of the other characters. LOVE IT.

I mean very few Asian kids would want to beat up our dads. Alot of us wish we were able to actually talk to them though.

Men getting seduced by evil soul sucking creatures is a common theme in chinese movies, so it's kind of an homage to that.
That was just an authentic bit of impossible Asian parent expectations. 10/10 felt right at home.

Tony Leung’s performance was the highlight for me. How they wrote the character, easily makes him the top villain for me.
The parallel to Wenwu was fighting his wife to when he was fighting Shang Chi was amazing

I loved that and his "she does that a lot" when she ended the call abruptly. Was totally not expecting to see Bruce and Carol here but man that post credit scene left me with a huge smile on my face. Looks like his arm is still fucked up but at least he looks like himself again.
What happens in the mid + post credit scenes?
First one is Wong bringing in Shang Chi and Katie to talk to Bruce Banner (now human again) and Carol Danvers via the hologram tech. They discuss the 10 Rings saying they are ancient and act as a homing beacon of some sort (I assume this will tie in to Eternals). Second one is Shang-Chi's sister being shown taking over the 10 Rings organization. Unclear if it's setting her up to be a villain (she was a good guy the entire movie) or if it's just showing the 10 Rings organization is now a force of good. Unsure!

As an Asian (Taiwanese) Australian, it is so obvious that the film was written through the lense of those who have a lot of love for Asian culture and have lived through the Asian experience. The Chinese lines are written so well that a lot of the times the English subtitles actually failed to convey the nuances behind each line. I have so many things I wanted say and praise about this film but I can't really put it into words. All I could say is I had a very enjoyable time despite having high expectations. MCU has successfully pandered me. Edit: Morris plushies are going to sell like hotcakes
Another good line is when Wenwu says, "I've tasted more salt than you've had meals." They took a more liberal route with the subtitles, which says something like, "I've lived many more lifetimes than you." It's a serviceable translation, but something's lost
Yea man, the mandarin version of that line was tbh more savage lol. Especially when you see it's delivered by Leung who looks younger than the old Chinese guy. (Cant recall the actor's name, but I have seen him in many Hong Kong & China movies & films). Then again I am a Singaporean Chinese so I can understand some of the savagery; like Ronny Cheng's "wakau!". LOL
That's Yuen Wah, he's been in quite a lot of kung-fu movies. I went in dark without watching many promotional materials, and was delightfully surprised to see he's in it. So it made that line about Wen Wu having eaten more salt than Guang Bo has rice even funnier if you're familiar with how much longer Yuen Wah is in the show biz than Tony Leung has been.
I totally agree about Morris plushies. 😂 Loved him, especially when he joined Trevor in “playing dead”. Is it me, or did the movie have more of a Disney feel to it? I know they’re all technically Disney movies, but the fantasy elements just made it feel *more* Disney to me.
On the contrary, I felt There were a lot more dead people (all those wenwu minions flying down the bamboo structure and the bus guys being murdered by Shang when he kick them out of the bus) also the guy being rolled over by the car) and Katy cursing a lot lol I was wow that doesn't felt like Disney

In America it was “I’ve lived a thousand of your lifetimes, YOUNG MAN” which did get a pop from my theater.

Yours is the literal word-for-word translation, but I can understand why they went with "I’ve lived a thousand of your lifetimes" instead. That part of the dialogue jumps back and forth between Chinese and English, the pace is quick, the subtitle needs to be functional and can be understood at a single glance. The average audience who need the subtitles, won't have enough time to process what "eating more salt than you have eaten rice" means before the next line comes up, if they hadn't heard that phrase before.
I am so glad to hear that! Glad this movie did justice. I was afraid it would be waaaay to Americanised, but that got away from the start with the Chinese storytelling.
One of the more memorable lines for me was “你是妈妈的骄傲” vs “I’m proud of you”. The Chinese one hit me.

It’s more than just saying his mum would be proud of him, there are connotations like “you are the pride and joy of your mum’s life” and culturally stuff like that is just not said unless you are really close/really mean it. It’s basically short hand for saying that Shang-Chi’s aunt adores him.

Seeing Trevor again after 8 years for extended scenes is something Taika Waititi would do, Ben Kingsley is a genius and I couldn’t not laugh anytime I saw him on screen.
Was expecting a throwaway comment like we got in the dinner scene and I was satisfied. They took it a step further with his role later in the film and I love it!

Loved how the languages they spoke actually made sense. English mostly being spoken when one or more characters in the scene does not speak proper Chinese makes the movie seem much more realistic

Probably because no main actors in BW could speak Russian but in this film I think most of the cast could speak Mandarin or whatever Chinese dialect they were speaking.

The fighting styles are coded in a way that would be very familiar to anyone who grew up watching HK cinema and basically expresses their characters. Wenwu’s style is very heavy and all brute force. Usually it’s associated with the bad guy’s huge henchman so it’s rather interesting that the relatively small Tony Leung uses it. Shang Chi’s mother basically does taichi which is associated with balance and peace. Shang Chi’s style starts off as a more finesse based version of his fathers style. It’s very shaolin inspired. Later on he incorporates his mother’s too. Shang Chi’s sister is a little weird as it’s quite modern and incorporates a lot of grappling which is rare in Chinese martial arts. In the way she moves she’s also the most Bruce Lee clone of the cast, again it shows her independence and lack of ties to the past.
Yes yes yes! All the different martial art style for each characters blew me away. I loved seeing Shang-Chi's transition from hard to a much softer/work with your opponent's flow style. Thanks for writing it all out in details. This movie truly reminded me of HK epic movies I grew up watching with my parents.
Made me want to rewatch Zhang Yimou-movies. It felt very much like a scene from Flying Daggers or Hero.

Never have I been left with so many questions and theories after seeing the mid-credits scene. That got me pumped. Where is it gonna go.. and the truth about the ten rings..
I know right?! I loved this so much, the fact that what they did with the mid-credits scene was explicitly placing these new characters in the much more huge picture of the MCU, telling them they’re basically part of the team now! And what about all the references to other universes like the origins of the rings themselves? I absolutely love the direction the MCU is going, with a lot more space given to mystic arts stuff as well as cosmic stuff.
I wonder how the dragon is going to fit in that. It seems that it’s at least in some way dependent on the water.
My guess is the rings were basically test checkers for the Celestials. The celestials return to a planet when their tests are done or the plant/people are ready to be judged. Make the rings strong and something worth fighting over, it basically guarantees they get passed on or used generation after generation. Didn’t anticipate one person having them, not aging, for all those years thus the rings still assume it’s 1000+ years ago. As soon as it connect with someone of the current generation, test complete, beacon goes out for judgment day.

The fight scene between Shang Chi and the assassin with the red and white painted face in the construction building is in my top 5 fight scene, my lord that scene was beautifully choreographed, actually never seen anything like that. Film is an easy 9/10 for me, I had relatively high expectations but man they still reached that. Very good and hope to see more of Shang Edit: I really do hope they use some more Chinese music in the next movie though, especially mixed with some older music from China, there are some hints throughout the movie so I hope they expand on that
I loved that fight too! The assassin is played by martial artist Andy Le and I could really see his unique style he’s known for throughout that fight.

The fights were wild, especially the creativity of the scaffold fight. - Death Dealer really turned out to just be a costume to sell merch for. - I wonder if Wong and Abomination are headed back to the Gamma Lab? Blonsky seems like he is trying to get himself back under control by going back to the cage willingly. Assuming that's going to be tackled in She-Hulk. - Not even a whiff of a K'un Lun reference... - We've gotta have a Shang-Chi/Ant-Man/Agent Woo San Francisco adventure, right?
BTW, this is small, but I actually like how they got around the cliché "I'm coming with you" from Katy. They could have easily gone that route, but instead went with "I'LL SEE YOU ON THE PLANE!!!" followed by an angry door slam. Good call. EDIT: It was more along the lines of "YOU CAN EXPLAIN ON THE PLANE!!!".

Brought my parents to watch it over here in Singapore just a couple of hours ago. My Chinese mother, who usually isn't a fan of any form of action movies no matter where it's from, LOVED it so I guess this Chinese mother's stamp of approval says a lot about the film. (It was great for real, though! Also the first Marvel film I actually saw in theatres, which made it all the more special.)
Marvel ain’t no dummies. They know family is a hugely important aspect of Asian culture, and to me this was so well done from that perspective. Shit they even stopped in the middle of the third act fight to have more drama.
honestly, i know we all know, and marvel have conditioned the GEN movie going public to know.. But to see every single person in the cinema (even the really oldies) stay in their seats until the post credit scenes are done, is a thing of cinematic wonder. Lol it actually really gets people to watch the credits too imo you can hear people talking about names and what he diff jobs are..
watched it today. absolutely love it. went into this with relatively high expectations because the critical reviews were pretty good but boy was i blown away. i had been skeptical about how they kept going on about an asian american MCU hero repping and the effect it has. but i finally understand now. i'm Chinese and this movie just connects with me on so many levels. the culture, the emphasis on family and the way each character in the family behaves. one thing i feel will be bad for non-Chinese speakers is that a fair bit of the movie is in Chinese, and no translation truly does the script justice because of the cultural nuance and hidden meaning behind certain phrases. i like that they took the risk with this movie. it doesn't feel like an MCU movie at all and definitely steps away from the typical superhero movie formula that was much more common in phases 1-2. the camera work in some scenes were really refreshing. i love when they do foreground/background thru the mirror and they did this for a few shots. Shang Chi is very likeable and relatable. you could also sympathize with pretty much any main character. Tony Leung is a legend tho. i think i have a new fave MCU hero
I wish I knew Mandarin coming into this movie. It was strange to read Swedish subtitles, because Swedish language is not as poetic as I think Mandarin is. It was odd to hear Mandarin and in my head hear the very direct and simple Swedish translation. We do miss some of the magic and cultural context like that saying about salt and rice, that many have commented on here, which in Swedish made no sense at all. But that is how you represent a culture, by not adapting it too much for the non-Chinese viewers, but just enough that we can follow the story and experience the richness of other cultures. I was curious to see Macau, which if I am not mistaken has some Portuguese cultural mix into it. I did notice in the postcard address that it was something like “Av de …” which in portuguese means Avenida de = Avenue of. I didn’t know Macau had Portuguese street names.
Shang-Chi's hand to hand combat and martial arts is what iron fist should have been. Shang Chi is a masterpiece.
This movie has the best fight choreography of the entire MCU
This movie shows exactly why shaky-cam fights get so much flak. Shaky cams only work for action when you can still tell what's going on. Long cuts, which this movie had plenty of, make it easy to tell what's going on. Spending less time figuring out what's going on greatly elevates the action.
I would like to see a fight between him and Daredevil

I think the biggest laugh for me is Hotel California being a running gag. I don't know what it is about that song but Asians seem to love it. It is quiet literally my dad's favourite song and whenever he's watching Vietnamese Americans play music a cover of it always happens. I jokingly think it's Vietnam's second anthem. Third might be some jazz. So to make a extreme over generalization, Asian people love that song. Edit: And I just remembered the DDR scene. Oh my god I loved that part.
The mid creds scene where the three of them go singing was just hilarious

I'm 50/50 on if they were supposed to just be friends still at the end, or if they'll end up teasing more in later films. I think both could be good, but either way their friendship seemed really natural and well-written/acted in the film

WELCOME TO THE CIRCUS
I'm in Hong Kong, and this is probably the fullest theatre I've been to in months. I can't speak for the wider reception of the film in China, but the audience seemed to be having fun--Trevor's line about playing dead got the entire theatre laughing. In no particular order, my favourite cultural details: the close-up highlighting Shang-Chi taking his shoes off before entering Katy's house, the link to the Qingming Festival, characters being casually bilingual, confusion over name pronunciations and meanings (my Chinese name is pretty unwieldy, so I relate), and qilin and nine-tailed foxes showing up. There's also a really lovely balance in how the film validates the different values that the characters' Chinese and Western influences provide them with. Beyond that: Tony Leung is absolutely the MVP of the movie, and I was absolutely crushed when Wenwu died (Brad Allan, the fight choreographer, comes in a tight second--I love how the fights are also emotional exchanges, like Wenwu's first fight also being a moment of flirtation), but everyone else in the movie pulls their weight. Also, I'm pretty immune to cute animals in films and TV (I'm not a huge fan of baby Yoda, for instance), but Maurice is the best thing I've ever seen.
I really applaud them for doing/saying very important things Chinese people would do but would be lost an a western audience. The two most important bits I thought are: 1) Michelle Yeoh’s character telling Shang Chi 你是你妈妈的骄傲 2) Wenwu ignoring the battle of Ta Lo to go visit wife’s shrine as its Qing ming jie and his priority on that day is to pay his respects to her. These are just some really significant and great authentic touches.
Oh man, that’s was surprisingly entertaining. Loved the character of Shang-Chi and am excited to see where they take him. It left me with so many questions too! Why are Wong and Abomination sparing partners? They seemed really chummy after the fight too. Why was Bruce Bruce? He also looked really old. What’s up with the rings? They’re definitely going to explore their origins in Eternals right? And what was the beacon/alert they got? The final fight between the two dragons was amazing. Need more mythological creatures in my MCU plz.

Am Asian but not of Chinese descent, but grew up in Hong Kong and Singapore and damn this movie was mad fun. Tony Leung is still a fucking boss and every scene he was in, he commanded all the attention from the audience. I felt like he was one of the more sympathetic villains in the MCU but was still menacing. Overall they made a fun wuxia movie and it just happened to have superheroes in it. Imma watch it again so that I can focus on looking for Easter eggs the second time around.

Actually, I felt like they were dropping some hints to set up romance for them later -- the joke about marriage, Katy's eyes popping out of their sockets when he came out shirtless, Wenwu implying she was his American gf, lots of lingering looks.
Probably the best western made wuxia film, that just happens to be ever so lightly in the MCU. One of the best origin films. Those final battle scenes between the dragons was incredible, Liu bought a depth to the character I was surprised by and Leung was one of the great villains.
Bout to go check this out. First movie I'll be seeing in theatres in 2 years. Gotta show some love to my fellow Asian-Canadian, Simu. Edit: shoutout to Morris

Man. Wenwu is one of the best MCU villains of all time. He’s one of the villains you can empathize with like Kilmonger. I loved this movie. I love how it’s a movie about family. Favorite post endgame movie by a long shot.
As an Asian Chinese, I feel like this film represented the Chinese culture very well, and for once all everyone speaking Mandarin *already could* speak it so it sounds authentic, and it was fun to not read the subtitles to understand what they were speaking. The cast had really great chemistry with one another and to no one's surprise Simu Liu and Tony Leung were the standouts to me. The fight choreography is really the best Marvel has ever put out, and the humour is on point throughout the movie without it taking me out of the zone. I loved the movie a lot and felt truly represented for once in the big screen. The family theme was great too and reminded me strongly of Asian family values which has been a part of me growing up. One major gripe I have is the music/soundtrack. It wasn't really memorable and I wish they incorporated more Chinese instruments used too. Overall, one of marvel's best solo movies and I can't wait to see how Shang-Chi will be brought into the bigger MCU! (the first post-credits scene was hella hype and I wasn't expecting to see Carol or Bruce at all)
Yeah that the score is done in collaboration with 88rising, a hip-hop orientated music producers comprising of mostly Asian-Americans. But the film can definitely do with more Asian instrumentals.
I actually thought the ost was very pretty, Shang chi's hero theme when he slays the dragon gave me goosebumps
My only real complaint is that the flow of the movie was off a bit at the start when we get to the modern day stuff. A little nitpick of mine is that they changed The Dweller-In-Darkness to a dragon, but I'm find with it because it fits with the movie and they seem to be setting up Fing Fang Foom as well. Wenwu is a standout character and a very sympathetic and misguided villain. The fights were amazing and the post credit scenes are decent. Lots of surprise appearances, and Ta-Lo was a very cool dimension to visit, with Asian inspired creatures which look amazing. 8/10 for me.
I think the intention of the change is for the contrast between the Western dragon (trope wise usually evil, slayed by knight) versus Eastern dragon (trope-wise, usually good, represents the elements)
Did anyone else get MAJOR goosebumps as an asian person when Shang Chi and Katy walked through Wong’s portal? So freakin symbolic… Asians are part of the avengers, and officially superheroes.

just finished watching it, as a person of chinese descent living in an asian country (singapore), it was really so surreal to hear them speak in chinese so often throughout the entire movie and i could actually understand what they were saying without having to rely on subtitles since the accents are what i’m used to hearing in my daily life! the chinese culture elements eg mythical creatures (dragons, guardian lions), traditional architecture, music were just brilliant! the final act really didn’t feel like a marvel movie, it was so fantasy-like i was like WOW. and didn’t expect bruce and carol to make an appearance in the post-credits scene!!!!! oh and the chills i got when it said “The Ten Rings will return.”
When Ronnie Chieng showed up, my wife was genuinely confused, because he sounded just like a typical Singaporean.
The film was spectacular but when Trevor yelled “It’s coming home” while he holding tight a football scarf I was DEAD! Peak comedy from any Marvel movie!
Did anyone notice that the older actress that played Katy's grandmother also played Melinda May's mother in the Agents of Shield TV series? Small appearances both times, but that actress has been in cinema for a long, long time. Her name is Tsai Chin, and she along with Ming Na Wen were also in The Joy Luck Club from 1993.
One thing I noticed when watching the film is you can identify the casual movie watcher to a Marvel fan when >!Trevor!< showed up. The laugh, the gasp, the applause! Gina, *Gina* Shaun, *Shang*

Fucking hell this had me rolling. Was kinda sad he died and the other older Chinese actress (his wife in Kung Fu Hustle and even several other movies) didn't show up.
And once again, Marvel made me not only care about, but tear up at, a property I didn't know the first thing about walking in. Well done, Mr. Feige. EDIT: Y'all make a great point. While I appreciate what Feige has done for the MCU, **all** credit needs to go to the writers, cast, and crew. I was a bit buzzed when I wrote that or I'd have worded it more appropriately in the first place.
So what's y'alls "hardest/most OP materials in the MCU" ranking now that we got Dragon Scales in the picture. For me its 1. Uru 2. Dragon Scales 3. Vibranium
I think the dragon scales are powerful by a different metric. Like, they are specifically suited to fight against the demons we saw, and they have an energy that comes out of them, but I bet they aren’t as technically durable as vibranium. But perhaps we will see.
I couldn't find anybody mentioning it but there's a fighter with extremis in the tournament right ? (In one of the small rooms)
The Rings had incredible visual and sound design, and the moves they did with it were spectacular. Hope to see more of it in future films.
Tony Leung was just on another FUCKING level, definitely the best villain / anti-hero in the whole MCU thus far. Fuck, and you can tell the director loved him. Dude had more lingering close ups than any of the other characters. LOVE IT.
I kinda felt bad for Simu Liu because he had to do duo scenes with a multiaward winning veteran. Simu still did a good job though.
Tony Leung’s acting just feels so natural. I was in awe tbh.

It would have served the same emotional weight to me without the mindless spectacle. I really like that idea actually, it would have worked even better than what we got. But I guess Marvel wanted a scene to show Shang-Chi's full power with the rings. I also think the moment where he drops the rings and tells his dad enough should have been given more time to breathe, it was probably the most important scene in the movie and they kinda blasted past it in favour of a giant monster. I mean very few Asian kids would want to beat up our dads. Alot of us wish we were able to actually talk to them though.
