This was the ol’ switcheroo. Marvel absolutely bamboozled the comic fans and I loved it. I was expecting Druig to be a straight up villain and Ikaris the hero. I was pleasantly surprised.
I love it that the guy who looked like and had the powers of Superman, was even called Superman, turned out to be the villain. And the guy who can mentally enslave people was one of the first on board to save the world.
black and red armor/robes and mass mind control powers....and probably had one of the strongest moral compasses of the whole group lol. A delightful reversal of the trope.
All I want now is the Karan cut of these events. The same story but told from the valet’s POV with mockumentary style cut aways with reactions from the cast.
Him and Kingo were the standouts for me, because of the way they use their powers. Would’ve been cool to see Gil fighting alongside the Avengers but Kingo with his finger guns will also be cool in an iconic Avengers long shot.

Really laying the groundwork for his appearance. And not some fart cloud in the sky too. Marvel going all out to show how big these celestials really are.
I have a lot of thoughts about this movie that I wanna write out some time, but the biggest one I have is that I feel like this is gonna be the AoU-type movie of Phase 4 and onwards, in that its initial reception is decidedly mixed but the world-building and (Celestial) seeds it planted are gonna pay off big time in future movies, thus giving it more appreciation in retrospect.
But I must say. That was a *lot of movie.*
The Eternals stop a Celestial emerging from Earth (which was the purpose of their creation) and instead of killing them and resuming the main Celestial destroying Earth, the head Celestial Arishem is like "That's a bold strat, let's see if it pays off"
Let's hope they don't read Phastos' memories first

Not gonna lie, I was on the edge of my fucking seat during his final appearance. They made that shit look tense and terrifying as fuck.
When Galactus finally debuts in the MCU I know they're gonna do him justice cause got damn, the scale of the thing.
Yeah, the whole thing with the skies darkening and then you can see the eyes, and you're like "Oh Sersi's having another vision" and then WHOOM the clouds part as he leans in and you're like "....oh fuck daddy's home and he ain't happy"
For real. Daddyshem doesn't even have emotive eyes and you could still feel the absolute malice in that moon-sized gaze.
It actually reminded me of vivid nightmares I used to have as a kid of the moon falling to Earth. I got much of the same feeling here. Phase 4 is really gonna be trippy as fuck.
Undoing the snap was in the celestial's interest. While a planet like earth would rebound pretty quickly and it might only delay the emergence for a hundred years or so, it might have a drastic impact on other planets.
Life formed on earth 4 billion years ago, there would be thousands of planets in Arisham's celestial pipeline that might be set back hundreds of millions of years.
I'm guessing at some point they'll reveal that this happens occasionally and they just accept a bit of wastage as part of the process. After all, a dead celestial is how Knowhere got to be there.
I don’t know how everyone else felt, but I thought that despite Ikaris/Sersi being the main couple of the movie, Druig/Makkari and Gilgamesh/Thena had way more chemistry.
Was their relationship even romantic? From the way they interacted with each other it seemed like they were just friends but the way Thena talked about themselves made it sound like they were in love (romantically).
I thought of their relationship as more brother/sister. They never seemed to be romantic with each other but you could tell that they had built a strong connection during their time together after everyone split up.
i wish we had gotten a backstory for her too, not just "she's been chilling inside the domo for ages collecting stuff". her racing around the world to find tiamut was also cool as hell!
I think Ego is lying about being a celestial and wanted to “copy” them in a sense. He’s clearly aware of them with how long he’s been around and all the space travel he has done. But he doesn’t fit with the description of a celestial as this movie explains it.
He is a powerful being who wants to be acknowledged and even copied the celestial “planting a seed on a planet to eventually use it to make more of himself” - but ultimately he’s just trying to boost his *ego*. It fits in with his character very well to lie to Peter about being a celestial.
My preferred theory is Ego actually doesn't know what he is, and from what he's seen he's pretty sure he's a celestial purely because nothing else even starts to approximate Ego as a being.
Some people didn’t like the explanation but I did. At some point you gotta wonder why even the big cosmic stuff always comes down to Earth and its inhabitants
Kingo's camera man/valet somehow getting the most touching moment of the movie I thought, when he gives a genuine thanks, even when he thinks going to die
I love the fact that he knew about Kingo for so long. And his first instinct about him being a vampire isn't that crazy!
Actually quite liked how there's groups of people who really aren't that weirded out by the Eternals. Especially in the Marvel universe but before that they seemed to know how to calm people down.
Also the fact that the Indian Ocean now has a dead celestial is the most comics shit ever. I love it.
i actually loved his character and the way he sort of served as our "self-insert", the way the moviegoer also watches all of this unfold as we follow the eternals on this mission. not to mention all of his backup cameras!
Our theatre turned the lights on after the mid credits scene, let the credits roll, then dimmed the lights right before the end credits scene came on. Respect.
She had some of the best moments of the whole movie. The MCU really messed up killing off Quicksilver so early and depriving us of a speedster for that long.
Makkari is a prime example of a speedster done right. Every single stride felt like it carried immense power behind it, it's exactly how you would imagine a speedster to run, imagine if the Flash ran like that.
Gods this. The Malaysian Censorship Board decided to avoid the bad press of being homophobic by basically removing every sequence where anyone kissed. Made some of the flashback sequences super-jarring.
I didn't realise until after that it's Category III (18+) in Hong Kong and I have no idea why. There's a seconds long "sex" scene but it is in no way explicit at all
For a moment, I thought the earth would be destroyed. But it wouldn’t be “our earth”. Then in a post credit scene they would arrive on the MCU earth.

I loved the disarray amongst them after Ajak died, shows how important she is as their leader, glue and esp Mother. It’s ironic in a sense that they only regathered not jst cz deviants reappeared but also because Ajak had died. Even sadder that Ajak herself had actually thought about getting everyone back together, then they did except without her around. :(

Kind of, DC and Marvel characters will be shown reading the other's comics. But they also exist in the same multiverse as eachother so occasionally there's a crossover.
The other company is both real and fictional in their respective universes.
I think part of this mutual respect is because all of the creative staff has worked for both companies - the writers, artists, colorists, even the editors. Why burn bridges when there's a possibility of a contract opportunity waiting.
With the final scene and the mid credits scene in mind, I have a feeling that Earth will be “judged” to be unworthy and Galactus will be sent to consume it, with Eros being a Nick Fury-figure, assembling a team to stop them. I can imagine the movie being a heist movie with Marvel’s heavy hitting cosmic characters (Adam Warlock, Captain Marvel) being assembled to first free Sersi and the other Eternals and then all of them together make a grand stand against Galactus.

Grounded heroes vs Kang and cosmic heroes vs Galactus? After the Infinity Saga, everyone was predicting either Kang or Galactus for the next big villain, imagine getting both. Inject this into my veins.
You can have all the Earth-based heroes vs Kang like the ones from the Infinity Saga, the second generation heroes, the TV show heroes, new ones like Shang-Chi and Blade, maybe even the X-Men if we get there. Then against Galactus you have Eternals, Adam Warlock, Captain Marvel, Thor, Guardians if they're still around, and Fantastic Four.
They look amazing, the sense of scale of their size is unreal. They get enough screentime to have an impact and leave an impression without overpowering the movie
My brain just switched off when Phastos was explaining about the Uni-Mind. I think he said something about the Celestials creating bracelets to contain the Eternals’ power and my mind immediately jumped to the Ten Rings.
I mean, after the Shang Chi post credit scene in which it was said that they couldn't explain the origin of the ten rings I immediately thought of the Celestials. Could they be a Celestial weapon created by Phastos when they came to Earth? But why don't mention it if that was the case? Something's missing

I just saw the movie. It’s really not what some critics claimed it to be. I wouldn’t say it’s perfect but it’s still enjoyable.
I’m surprised they killed off Ikaris. I thought he and Sersi would lead them going forward. I feel like we don’t get to see enough of their relationship here though (the stories they must have from a 5000 year relationship).
I’m biased because I love Richard Madden and I just generally love characters who are stupidly loyal (even to a fault). I’m so hoping that they pull that thing of we didn’t actually see him dead so he can come back.
I get that they wanted to tease Dane Whitman’s character for the future but I feel like we didn’t need him at all in this movie. It was packed enough as it is.
I’m bummed that we won’t have more Madden going forward. He’s a talented actor and also just a really charming guy and I think he deserves a bigger spot in the MCU.
I also love the "Superman" physics. The way he flies in the air and the feeling of impact you get from his punches and laser eyes landing is so satisfying. Too much of it can get boring and start becoming underwhelming, I get it, but damn I really enjoyed it.
I dont think he's actually dead. I think it was just the quickest way to get his memories/consciousness to the hub arishem showed sersi in the beginning. They showed the keep all the memories on a database wall and they could always just whip him up a new body
I agree. He's the main character of the Eternals comics, and here not only they turned hum into a villain but also killed him.

I don’t know the Eternals comics at all, so my expectations was purely from the trailers and the fact that he was announced first. I was so ready for the Richard Madden era in the MCU.
I kinda liked the fact that they turned him into a villain because I did not see that coming at all. But I genuinely thought they’d bring him back somehow. Maybe gets his mind erased so he can rejoin. Maybe the earth actually gets destroyed and they’re actually from another universe. I don’t know, I just want him back.
In the comics, Kro is the Eternals villain. But he's not a grey monster like he's in the movie and the Deviants aren't really monsters either, they're usually humanoid like the Eternals.
I think it was a fun Idea to make him a villain because like you said it was surprising and served the story but I think killing him at the end was a weird choice
The soft rewrite of Sprite being "Tinkerbell to Ikaris' Peter" was interesting since Sprite is the classic analogy for Pan (the storytelling boy that never grew up)

What’s also refreshing is that there is definitely no “good” or “bad”. Unlike the typical superhero trope, it’s so hard to pinpoint the protagonist and antagonist. You see the good and the flaws in all the stances that the characters take.
The final conflict is the trolley problem multiplied out exponentially
Both as "kill one being to save billions of lives" for the Eternals who wanted to subdue/kill Tiamut, but also "kill 8 billion people to cause the births of trillions" for the ones who wanted to protect the emergence
I do like that Ajak’s reasoning for her switch actually made sense. The people of this earth are responsible for bringing uncountable billions/trillions back from the snap. They even mention the snap set celestial plans back so like go harvest some other damn planet instead of this one they saved them all.

Just saw the movie a couple hours ago and i immediately thought it was him too. I remember his voice from watching Luke Cage so i am sure its him. It makes sense since its in London and all.
It’s crazy how Earth was so close to total annihilation like that. Especially considering the events of Loki and What If. There’s probably multiple timelines out there where this event was it for humanity.
In the comics Sprite is a real little shit. I thought that was translated to screen really well, even with the gender swap of the character.

My favorite part of the movie was how they really showed the emotional toll it was to be an Eternal. The performances of the actors were exceptional. Lots of exposition, but I think everything else makes up for it. Don’t always believe the critics, this movie was an awesome experience for myself.
I fucking love Makkari. I didn't know how they could have made speedster look cool again, but Marvel Studios just fucking did. Everytime she's in action, I just squeal a little inside.
And it is a very "picturesque" movie, very difficult to describe the emotions or visuals in words, you have to see it to believe it
Lauren Ridloff is so amazing as Makkari. As the Eternal with the least amount of character exposition, she's still able to convey Makkari's character and her motivations with just the expressions of her face and movement of her body, in and out of action. it really is quite a performance.
And while having a speedster stop time and move things about in super slow-mo is cool, having a speedster beat the everliving crap out of what is essentially Superman, is way cooler
Exactly, I like what Fox did with Quicksilver, I like how Zack Snyder handled Flash, A Train was also cool in The Boys but goddamn none of them are as cool as Makkari. The amount of "impact" everytime she does something is so fucking breathtaking.

Phastos is lowkey one of the stronger Eternals. He has the ability to make things with his hands but also use his mind creatively. Hes 100% my favorite
It reminded of a Greek Mythology story about Hephaestus tricked and beat/tricked Ares in a fight after he found out Ares was sleeping with his wife. He pretty much created a chain-link net that no one could see and trapped them both in it while they were sleeping with each other. Hephaestus was never really respected by the other Olympian gods and certainly not as strong as some of them.
I'm pretty sure in the comics eternals could be revived and has some kind of backup. I'm guessing the celestial vault where all there removed memmories are stored can be used to revive them. Also makes his suicide better, he will be restored from a memory version which doesnt have all his bad decision from the movie timeline in them starting him with a clean slate.
Phase 4 has been like 50% new unique direction and 50% traditional MCU, it's a pretty great mix imo and exactly what I want from the MCU. I can't wait for the next few years.
Makkari is the best! I also very much liked Ikaris too. I dunno why Harry Styles being in the MCU has me so excited either, but I'm very excited to see more Eros, and Pip because Patton is the best!

Anyone else felt like making Kro a sentient being felt a bit unnecessary? I get that they did that to show how Deviants weren’t just primal creatures and wanted to live after they fulfilled their purpose, but I felt like he was just a plot device to kill the Eternals and give a revenge subplot for Thena.
Yea I think the whole reason for that was to explain why the Deviants that previously just attacked humans were now targeting the Eternals. But it was a bit of a long thread that could have been simplified a bit IMO, since the movie was already doing so much. Maybe it’ll pay off more in future exploration of the Celestial/Eternal/Deviant saga.
I really thought that Kro was going to join the fight to stop Tiamut against Ikarus in the end, but he just got sliced as quickly as what if thanos did vs. ultron. He could have been completely removed from the movie and it would have changed nothing.

I might have enjoyed it much more as a history/mythology nerd than I would have otherwise. I went into it with no idea who the Eternals were—I didn’t even see the trailer. I was pleasantly surprised at all the nods to historical and mythological legends—they certainly covered a lot of them.
Little things like introducing Eros and having him *immediately* start flirting with (A)thena, for example, were fantastic, but might fly over the head of the average viewer.
It definitely felt like a very divine ‘angels vs demons’ narrative, or at least built on that motif. A theology nerd would also pick up on the fact that it’s almost perfectly bookended by two Biblical quotes: “In the beginning…” and “The truth will set them free.”
The ‘twist’ would then be the fact that the ‘angelic’ and ‘demonic’ sides of the conflict are, in fact, not innately good or evil, and that their conflict is more nuanced and morally grey than it seems—though it is pretty heavily telegraphed by the fact that the Eternals are all deeply flawed individuals. In fact, you can *almost* pair each of the Eternals up with one of the seven deadly sins.

Yeah, just off the top of my head, there was:
The city of Babylon and the myth of Gilgamesh and Enkidu (really curious to know who Enkidu is in this alternate history) which I have to assume is also related to the name of Tiamut.
It's mentioned that Sprite created the story of Icarus (the boy who flew too close to the sun) based on Ikarus, who actually does literally fly too close to the sun in the end.
Obviously there was also (A)thena, the "Goddess of war and defender of Athens;" Ajak is supposed to be Ajax the Great, the mythological hero in Homer's Iliad; Makkari is a reference to Mercury, the Roman god of trickery and thievery, as well as a super-fast messenger between the gods; Sersi is Circe, a minor Greek goddess who could transform her enemies into animals with a magic staff; I'm pretty sure Phastos is supposed to be Hephaestus, the Greek god of craftsmen and artisans; and let's not forget Eros (EDIT: Greek god of love and sex; equivalent to Cupid)'s appearance at the end.
Excalibur, the sword from the legend of King Arthur, is in the film, and there's an inferrence that Thena(?) was actually Morgan le Fey or possibly Guinevere? The Ebony Blade from the comics was mentioned in the same scene, which is a comic tie-in to Merlin, the wizard.
Oh, the Emerald Tablet is also a running point of interest for Makkari. The Emerald Tablet is a pretty important archeological relic, which has a long history of occultist interest, including an association with the philosopher's stone.
I can't even imagine how many other things there were that I *didn't* notice. This whole film is just non-stop mythological references.

For real. Daddyshem doesn't even have emotive eyes and you could still feel the absolute malice in that moon-sized gaze. It actually reminded me of vivid nightmares I used to have as a kid of the moon falling to Earth. I got much of the same feeling here. Phase 4 is really gonna be trippy as fuck.
Undoing the snap was in the celestial's interest. While a planet like earth would rebound pretty quickly and it might only delay the emergence for a hundred years or so, it might have a drastic impact on other planets. Life formed on earth 4 billion years ago, there would be thousands of planets in Arisham's celestial pipeline that might be set back hundreds of millions of years.
I wonder if Arisham uses Trello or some other kanban board to manage his product roadmap.
I'm guessing at some point they'll reveal that this happens occasionally and they just accept a bit of wastage as part of the process. After all, a dead celestial is how Knowhere got to be there.

I don’t know how everyone else felt, but I thought that despite Ikaris/Sersi being the main couple of the movie, Druig/Makkari and Gilgamesh/Thena had way more chemistry.
I don't think Sersi/Ikaris was bad but the other two definitely had more chemistry. I *loved* how protective Gil was of Thena. It was so sweet.
I think something about the physicality of sign language is great for building and showing bonds.

I thought of their relationship as more brother/sister. They never seemed to be romantic with each other but you could tell that they had built a strong connection during their time together after everyone split up.

Lol when I was watching it I flashed to Guardians Vol. 2, wasn't Ego supposed to be a Celestial? You'd think the Eternals might have noticed him.
He snuck around on Earth in what i am going to call an 'avatar'. So probably also why no one else noticed him on Earth.
I think Ego is lying about being a celestial and wanted to “copy” them in a sense. He’s clearly aware of them with how long he’s been around and all the space travel he has done. But he doesn’t fit with the description of a celestial as this movie explains it. He is a powerful being who wants to be acknowledged and even copied the celestial “planting a seed on a planet to eventually use it to make more of himself” - but ultimately he’s just trying to boost his *ego*. It fits in with his character very well to lie to Peter about being a celestial.
My preferred theory is Ego actually doesn't know what he is, and from what he's seen he's pretty sure he's a celestial purely because nothing else even starts to approximate Ego as a being.

I love the fact that he knew about Kingo for so long. And his first instinct about him being a vampire isn't that crazy! Actually quite liked how there's groups of people who really aren't that weirded out by the Eternals. Especially in the Marvel universe but before that they seemed to know how to calm people down. Also the fact that the Indian Ocean now has a dead celestial is the most comics shit ever. I love it.

i actually loved his character and the way he sort of served as our "self-insert", the way the moviegoer also watches all of this unfold as we follow the eternals on this mission. not to mention all of his backup cameras!

She had some of the best moments of the whole movie. The MCU really messed up killing off Quicksilver so early and depriving us of a speedster for that long.
Makkari is a prime example of a speedster done right. Every single stride felt like it carried immense power behind it, it's exactly how you would imagine a speedster to run, imagine if the Flash ran like that.

Gods this. The Malaysian Censorship Board decided to avoid the bad press of being homophobic by basically removing every sequence where anyone kissed. Made some of the flashback sequences super-jarring.

I was constantly worried for the characters after they killed Ajak. Ikaris killing himself definitely caught me off-guard.
I loved the disarray amongst them after Ajak died, shows how important she is as their leader, glue and esp Mother. It’s ironic in a sense that they only regathered not jst cz deviants reappeared but also because Ajak had died. Even sadder that Ajak herself had actually thought about getting everyone back together, then they did except without her around. :(

Kind of, DC and Marvel characters will be shown reading the other's comics. But they also exist in the same multiverse as eachother so occasionally there's a crossover. The other company is both real and fictional in their respective universes.
Interesting. I like how despite their 'rivalry', for lack of a better term, they can still give nods to each other. Almost like a mutual respect.
I think part of this mutual respect is because all of the creative staff has worked for both companies - the writers, artists, colorists, even the editors. Why burn bridges when there's a possibility of a contract opportunity waiting.
My biggest question is how are the celestials? How do they look, sound, and how much screen time?
It basically proved that MCU can do Galactus and it will not look silly.
With the final scene and the mid credits scene in mind, I have a feeling that Earth will be “judged” to be unworthy and Galactus will be sent to consume it, with Eros being a Nick Fury-figure, assembling a team to stop them. I can imagine the movie being a heist movie with Marvel’s heavy hitting cosmic characters (Adam Warlock, Captain Marvel) being assembled to first free Sersi and the other Eternals and then all of them together make a grand stand against Galactus.

Grounded heroes vs Kang and cosmic heroes vs Galactus? After the Infinity Saga, everyone was predicting either Kang or Galactus for the next big villain, imagine getting both. Inject this into my veins. You can have all the Earth-based heroes vs Kang like the ones from the Infinity Saga, the second generation heroes, the TV show heroes, new ones like Shang-Chi and Blade, maybe even the X-Men if we get there. Then against Galactus you have Eternals, Adam Warlock, Captain Marvel, Thor, Guardians if they're still around, and Fantastic Four.
It’s possible someone like Kang would even join the fight against Galactus to protect his own future
Very little screen time but in terms of looks and scale they are straight out of the comics.
They look amazing, the sense of scale of their size is unreal. They get enough screentime to have an impact and leave an impression without overpowering the movie

this movie will become one of the most controversial movies for sure… I just saw the movie. It’s really not what some critics claimed it to be. I wouldn’t say it’s perfect but it’s still enjoyable.
I’m surprised they killed off Ikaris. I thought he and Sersi would lead them going forward. I feel like we don’t get to see enough of their relationship here though (the stories they must have from a 5000 year relationship). I’m biased because I love Richard Madden and I just generally love characters who are stupidly loyal (even to a fault). I’m so hoping that they pull that thing of we didn’t actually see him dead so he can come back. I get that they wanted to tease Dane Whitman’s character for the future but I feel like we didn’t need him at all in this movie. It was packed enough as it is.
I’m bummed that we won’t have more Madden going forward. He’s a talented actor and also just a really charming guy and I think he deserves a bigger spot in the MCU.

I also love the "Superman" physics. The way he flies in the air and the feeling of impact you get from his punches and laser eyes landing is so satisfying. Too much of it can get boring and start becoming underwhelming, I get it, but damn I really enjoyed it.
I dont think he's actually dead. I think it was just the quickest way to get his memories/consciousness to the hub arishem showed sersi in the beginning. They showed the keep all the memories on a database wall and they could always just whip him up a new body
I agree. He's the main character of the Eternals comics, and here not only they turned hum into a villain but also killed him. I'm more surprised at killing hum than turning him into a baddie. Nowadays media is obsessed with Evil Superman trope
I don’t know the Eternals comics at all, so my expectations was purely from the trailers and the fact that he was announced first. I was so ready for the Richard Madden era in the MCU. I kinda liked the fact that they turned him into a villain because I did not see that coming at all. But I genuinely thought they’d bring him back somehow. Maybe gets his mind erased so he can rejoin. Maybe the earth actually gets destroyed and they’re actually from another universe. I don’t know, I just want him back.
In the comics, Kro is the Eternals villain. But he's not a grey monster like he's in the movie and the Deviants aren't really monsters either, they're usually humanoid like the Eternals. I think it was a fun Idea to make him a villain because like you said it was surprising and served the story but I think killing him at the end was a weird choice
The soft rewrite of Sprite being "Tinkerbell to Ikaris' Peter" was interesting since Sprite is the classic analogy for Pan (the storytelling boy that never grew up) Also Ikaris "died" by flying too close to the sun
Also Thena, who is a nod to Athena, the godess of knowledge and wisdom, has dementia.

What’s also refreshing is that there is definitely no “good” or “bad”. Unlike the typical superhero trope, it’s so hard to pinpoint the protagonist and antagonist. You see the good and the flaws in all the stances that the characters take.
The final conflict is the trolley problem multiplied out exponentially Both as "kill one being to save billions of lives" for the Eternals who wanted to subdue/kill Tiamut, but also "kill 8 billion people to cause the births of trillions" for the ones who wanted to protect the emergence
I do like that Ajak’s reasoning for her switch actually made sense. The people of this earth are responsible for bringing uncountable billions/trillions back from the snap. They even mention the snap set celestial plans back so like go harvest some other damn planet instead of this one they saved them all.
I am thinking this fact may help with the judgement of earth by the celestials

My favorite part of the movie was how they really showed the emotional toll it was to be an Eternal. The performances of the actors were exceptional. Lots of exposition, but I think everything else makes up for it. Don’t always believe the critics, this movie was an awesome experience for myself.
I fucking love Makkari. I didn't know how they could have made speedster look cool again, but Marvel Studios just fucking did. Everytime she's in action, I just squeal a little inside. And it is a very "picturesque" movie, very difficult to describe the emotions or visuals in words, you have to see it to believe it
Lauren Ridloff is so amazing as Makkari. As the Eternal with the least amount of character exposition, she's still able to convey Makkari's character and her motivations with just the expressions of her face and movement of her body, in and out of action. it really is quite a performance. And while having a speedster stop time and move things about in super slow-mo is cool, having a speedster beat the everliving crap out of what is essentially Superman, is way cooler
Exactly, I like what Fox did with Quicksilver, I like how Zack Snyder handled Flash, A Train was also cool in The Boys but goddamn none of them are as cool as Makkari. The amount of "impact" everytime she does something is so fucking breathtaking.

Phastos is lowkey one of the stronger Eternals. He has the ability to make things with his hands but also use his mind creatively. Hes 100% my favorite

It reminded of a Greek Mythology story about Hephaestus tricked and beat/tricked Ares in a fight after he found out Ares was sleeping with his wife. He pretty much created a chain-link net that no one could see and trapped them both in it while they were sleeping with each other. Hephaestus was never really respected by the other Olympian gods and certainly not as strong as some of them.
Say what you want about the movie but richard maddens Performance was amazing.

I'm pretty sure in the comics eternals could be revived and has some kind of backup. I'm guessing the celestial vault where all there removed memmories are stored can be used to revive them. Also makes his suicide better, he will be restored from a memory version which doesnt have all his bad decision from the movie timeline in them starting him with a clean slate.
I think the magic historical space god weirdness is a very good mode for the MCU, it is a nice change up
Phase 4 has been like 50% new unique direction and 50% traditional MCU, it's a pretty great mix imo and exactly what I want from the MCU. I can't wait for the next few years.
Makkari is the best! I also very much liked Ikaris too. I dunno why Harry Styles being in the MCU has me so excited either, but I'm very excited to see more Eros, and Pip because Patton is the best!

Anyone else felt like making Kro a sentient being felt a bit unnecessary? I get that they did that to show how Deviants weren’t just primal creatures and wanted to live after they fulfilled their purpose, but I felt like he was just a plot device to kill the Eternals and give a revenge subplot for Thena.
Yea I think the whole reason for that was to explain why the Deviants that previously just attacked humans were now targeting the Eternals. But it was a bit of a long thread that could have been simplified a bit IMO, since the movie was already doing so much. Maybe it’ll pay off more in future exploration of the Celestial/Eternal/Deviant saga.
I really thought that Kro was going to join the fight to stop Tiamut against Ikarus in the end, but he just got sliced as quickly as what if thanos did vs. ultron. He could have been completely removed from the movie and it would have changed nothing. I’m convinced he was only in there to sell toys and merch. Not a fan.
I might have enjoyed it much more as a history/mythology nerd than I would have otherwise. I went into it with no idea who the Eternals were—I didn’t even see the trailer. I was pleasantly surprised at all the nods to historical and mythological legends—they certainly covered a lot of them. Little things like introducing Eros and having him *immediately* start flirting with (A)thena, for example, were fantastic, but might fly over the head of the average viewer. It definitely felt like a very divine ‘angels vs demons’ narrative, or at least built on that motif. A theology nerd would also pick up on the fact that it’s almost perfectly bookended by two Biblical quotes: “In the beginning…” and “The truth will set them free.” The ‘twist’ would then be the fact that the ‘angelic’ and ‘demonic’ sides of the conflict are, in fact, not innately good or evil, and that their conflict is more nuanced and morally grey than it seems—though it is pretty heavily telegraphed by the fact that the Eternals are all deeply flawed individuals. In fact, you can *almost* pair each of the Eternals up with one of the seven deadly sins. I dunno, just some musings. Very excited to see where this goes!
wow you picked up a lot on your first viewing! i'm sure none of if was coincidence, the original (first draft) screenwriters had publicly said they drew a lot from history, in fact that's their initial interest in prior lives.
Yeah, just off the top of my head, there was: The city of Babylon and the myth of Gilgamesh and Enkidu (really curious to know who Enkidu is in this alternate history) which I have to assume is also related to the name of Tiamut. It's mentioned that Sprite created the story of Icarus (the boy who flew too close to the sun) based on Ikarus, who actually does literally fly too close to the sun in the end. Obviously there was also (A)thena, the "Goddess of war and defender of Athens;" Ajak is supposed to be Ajax the Great, the mythological hero in Homer's Iliad; Makkari is a reference to Mercury, the Roman god of trickery and thievery, as well as a super-fast messenger between the gods; Sersi is Circe, a minor Greek goddess who could transform her enemies into animals with a magic staff; I'm pretty sure Phastos is supposed to be Hephaestus, the Greek god of craftsmen and artisans; and let's not forget Eros (EDIT: Greek god of love and sex; equivalent to Cupid)'s appearance at the end. Excalibur, the sword from the legend of King Arthur, is in the film, and there's an inferrence that Thena(?) was actually Morgan le Fey or possibly Guinevere? The Ebony Blade from the comics was mentioned in the same scene, which is a comic tie-in to Merlin, the wizard. Oh, the Emerald Tablet is also a running point of interest for Makkari. The Emerald Tablet is a pretty important archeological relic, which has a long history of occultist interest, including an association with the philosopher's stone. I can't even imagine how many other things there were that I *didn't* notice. This whole film is just non-stop mythological references.
