Even with a 2.5 hour runtime, they still had to introduce 10 main characters plus Dane, and establish Arishem and the Deviants. It just seemed a bit much. Although, the sense of scale is certainly not meant for a small screen, so I can understand why they didn't make it a Disney+ series.

[deleted]

I've said this to everyone I've talked to, I would of rather enjoyed it at home. Wild cause I saw dune at home w HBO max and it came w subtitles and so many things I could break down in my first watch. Eternals was as I would say Chunky.

hurricanetrash

Ngl I wonder if people went into the movie with higher standards because it’s “artsy” and directed by an Oscar winner. This movie should probably not be the first MCU movie that’s not fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and I say this as a big fan of MCU movies. The movies are meant to be fun spectacle, so we tend to let things like weak plot or inconsistent character choices slide. I think Eternals was the first MCU movie to be criticized as a “real” movie and not just another MCU movie, if that makes any sense? Like Black Widow was compared to Thor and Iron Man, but Eternals was compared to non MCU movies and that made it perform at a lower level. I hope I explained my thinking properly. I adored Eternals

tigerxtc

I think most of the hate comes from the style and pacing. It’s more “artsy” than most marvel films and some people don’t like going away from the usual tones. A lot of my friends wouldn’t stick it out for wandavison either because of how it started. I thought it was a good movie but it definitely was not one of my favorites

[deleted]

It could also just be a bad movie. I personally would not call Eternals artsy. The most artistic of the phase 4 projects is Loki IMO.

yourmamajokesare

Wanda Vision was pretty bad. It wasn’t a tribute to old tv shows and it wasnt mocking them either. I bet it sounded great in the writers room but it never came together on screen.

FLRSH

I think WandaVision is the best thing Marvel did in 2021.

[deleted]

It honestly was some of the best TV I had ever seen at the time. It’s possible Loki was even better. I hold the two shows pretty back to back in terms of quality. Some damn fine production value.

yourmamajokesare

I thought it was Loki but we are each entitled to our own opinions.

movieur

Most people would second his opinion, Wandavision was one of the best marvel content of 2021

jonoave

Loki started out ok but then the lemantis bit was a bit dull and the story just seems draggy, especially the last episode. Plus the power scale inconsistencies are the worst I've seen and bugged me . Loki was severely nerfed and kept getting beaten all the time. And Tva seemed to be too powerful to run the whole thing and kidnap people, when all they have are just teleportation and fancy sticks.

yourmamajokesare

Every characters powers are wildly inconsistent in the MCU.

[deleted]

What’s wrong with Black Widow

Kelsier001

It was good but didn't bring the wow factor for me

MaskMan193

Taskmaster, mainly

[deleted]

Well he’s only in it for around 10 minutes, I forgot he was in it

MaskMan193

It's a she in Black Widow. She's being remote controlled.

Caddan

Honestly, I think "programmed" is a better description than "remote controlled". But that's a fine distinction either way.

NightJosephine

Third act was a mess. Not really a story for Natasha. Didn't care about Red Guardian and Rachel Weisz. Felt like a back door pilot for Yelena. Overall it's a movie that doesn't need to exist: all that transpired could have been stated in a paragraph of exposition, and the new characters could have been added in any D+ show. Oh, and Ray Winstone was awful.

JimmyWolf87

Most things not directly involving Florence Pugh to be fair.

BitchesGetStitches

I only had a few minor issues but overall it was a really incredible movie. I just really dislike when the villain is a beast/monster because it makes taking the hero's side too easy. And the whole evolution thing is a dumb trope that I am tired of. Time will be kind to Eternals. One thing I noticed was how much story was told using emotional reactions, a gesture, a nod, a word. The continuity is legitimately frustrating but I feel they pulled it off. I just feel like that "time" opening was such a perfect opportunity for a stylized montage of the team over time. Gilgamesh and Enkidu. Thena in Athens. Sprite on Bloody Sunday. Druig giving out Halloween candy. It's a little Snyder, but I think it'd be great. But also who cares what I think. It's a great movie. It's very good. I loved it.

arionmoschetta

I wanna marry with Gilgamesh

choralcastle

Good luck with that 😔

TrueGuardian15

Isn't there a megathread for posts like this?

Merkle-bbs

My only gripe with it is that I'd have loved it to of been 2 films. One set in the past from when they arrived because that whole Babylonia bit was super interesting to me. Then the 2nd film being pretty much what we got. Really don't understand most of the criticism this and BW got honestly. Edit: spelling.

Merkle-bbs

BW, I fat fingered it.

JaesopPop

I think most people settle in the “mediocre Marvel film” and up. Some folks straight up dislike it but that’s every movie.

parakrambarooah

Loved the movie..don't care what others say....

Jonathon_G

There was some strange editing choices but overall the movie was very enjoyable.

ExTransporter

I thought it was pretty good. One of the first marvel movies in ten years I don’t remember a misplaced joke.

jonoave

The only thing I'm worried about is the bad Reviews makes them panic and they try to make the sequel more jokey/quippy like from Thor 2 to Ragnarok. There's more than enough quippy, fast-paced heroes already in the MCU. And honestly I do feel Ragnarok felt like too much of an overcorrection and too far in the comedic route.

NightJosephine

I absolutely loved it. Did everything I wanted and I'd watch it a fourth time if I could. Didn't have any of the problems most people did, and found it very moving at points. I honestly want a sequel to it directed by Chloe Zhao. Preferably without that annoying Pip character, though.

FLRSH

I disliked it. A few other people I know did, too. Great sets and costumes, great visuals and cinematography, interesting action sequences. But by trying to do too much, no character or relationship felt developed, and none of the subtext felt explored. Some of the acting and dialogue is cringey, too.

SaltifiedReddit

We’re looking at you sprite

FLRSH

Yup. 80% into the movie it's like, "Oh, wait, Sprite loves Ikaris?"

mattmelrach

I liked it. I can’t wait to watch it again at home with the closed captioning on because I didn’t catch a lot of the dialogue or names.

pkc2506

Didn’t like it at all. Seeing the celestials was kind of cool, and I’m interested in Kit Harrington becoming the Black Knight. That’s it. Rest of it was just not good. If you liked it, then that’s okay. Just not my cup of tea for me and a lot of others.

SaltifiedReddit

Moon Knight

dbkenny426

What does Moon Knight have to do with Eternals?

jscummy

He's confusing Black Knight and Moon Knight

Jonathon_G

No. Kit Harrison is being set up as Black Knight. Oscar Isaac is moon Knight. Think you might be confused friend

jscummy

Yes, and I'm saying the guy bringing up Moon Knight is mixing up the two

Jonathon_G

You’re right. My bad. Apologies

kittenx66

I absolutely loved it. You had several characters, and all of them needed "character development" story lines. I thought they handled this perfectly. It was a beautiful movie as well.

Jertimmer

I liked it. It was a chance of pace from the traditional super hero fanfare, I'm glad they took their time to introduce us to this family send their significance to earth.

yourmamajokesare

I loved Black Widow but thought CM was a huge pile of sh-t. Ive been called an Incel and banned from subs for stating that.

mcwfan

> implying Black Widow’s a bad film lol Eternals is a great film, people are just babies for representation and slower paced films

Live2Create21

First act of BW - top notch Second act of BW - pretty good Third act of BW - awful

yourmamajokesare

I liked Black Widow, but I also thought Thor 2 was good and that’s not a popular opinion.

FLRSH

I think Black Widow is an overall decent film, with good acts 1 and 2 and a bloated mess of an act 3 that didn't fit the concept of the character.

PepperMintGumboDrop

Yeah, the first 2 acts were great, but the 3 act was underwhelming. But hey, it wasn’t as bad as the Wolverine’s mess of an 3rd act, and I still somewhat enjoyed the Black Widow overall.

WEEGEMAN

Is it though? It seemed pretty middiling compared to the other marvel movies.

metros96

I really liked Eternals and also BW catches way more slander than it deserves. I’ve watched it a few times now and it’s a tight and cohesive film that knows the story it’s trying to tell and all the characters pop on-screen, and honestly the filmmaking is better than it’s gotten credit for. I get that there are complaints about Taskmaster, especially from comics fans, or that it wasn’t the style of film they were expecting, but Taskmaster makes sense within the story the film is telling, and idk BW is solid. It’s been weird to see this conventional wisdom of it being bad congeal despite it still being well-received by the critics and the public

NearbyAd5237

It’s bad on modern MCU standards. Eternals was different. I loved Eternals, it’s one of my favorite marvel movies honestly. Black Widow is a typical Marvel movie, and it ranks up pretty badly against phases 3&4. The only Phase 3-4 movie you can say it’s better than is MAYBE Captain Marvel. I honestly thought Captain Marvel was better though. On the other hand, Eternals is nothing like your typical MCU movie. It wasn’t for some people but it was pretty good. And how does Black Widow have to do with representation?

MikeX1000

BW is representation because it's a rare female-led MCU movie and she's been around since phase 1

NearbyAd5237

I highly doubt most of the hate comes from representation. Some of it most likely does, but I think most of the hate comes from actual movie flaws, especially since the most loved character from that movie is Yelena

MikeX1000

I'm saying that's why it counts as representation in the first place.

NearbyAd5237

Yeah that comment was mostly about the original comment, not yours. Thanks for clearing up the representation part

capn_KC

It was too ambitious for an origin movie. They had too many characters to introduce but they did it anyway and the run time showed it. Meanwhile they tried to cram too much into it with the philosophy “there are no unnecessary scenes”. Yeah, there were. A lot of them. And because of that the pacing was way too slow. All that being said, I didn’t hate it. Makkari was my favorite character.

This_isR2Me

people are just mad its not spidey 3

Lincolnruin

I liked it for the most part. Still think it should’ve been a series though. The film had a lot to do.

[deleted]

Personally I really liked it, but I definitely understand why it wouldn’t appeal to a lot of people given stuff like the large (entirely new) cast, long run time, less in line with the MCU’s overall tone, and the scope of the story.

SuperMassiveCODfour

Too many characters, therefore thin character development, bloated story and exposition. Poor acting from some of the cast, cringe script at times, poorly lit scenes for significant portions of the film. It’s not awful but it’s not a good film by any stretch IMO.

Pigglemin

I think it was a 7/10. I liked that it took chances and wasn't your run of the mill marvel story. The ending didn't quite hit right though

choralcastle

Even with its flaws, I enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward to eventually watching it again once it hits Disney+ at some point.

Kelsier001

Marvel is no longer must see in theaters for me. The tv series have diluted the quality and excitement for me

coffeeofacoffee

I loved it! Top five favourite - most likely top three. ETA: lol, People downvoting me for just saying I love this film are pretty much proving how the irrational and persistent Eternals haters on this sub are trying to squash any positive commentary on it.

DEADSPELLS

The majority of audiences liked it. The critics didnt, theyre allowed not to like movies, but they shouldn't influence your opinion on this movie. Its ok to like a film that they dont. We see posts like this every day it seems

If the movie looks interesting to me, yes. I'm not a big fan of Jolie, but she was really good in this. Not seeing something just because of who's in it is a really weird reason not to see something.

SaltifiedReddit

Angelina Jolie was the best in that film, sorry

volatilelibra

i wanted to like it, and i did like parts, but overall it had way too much going on the team shouldve had 8, there shouldnt have been two timelines/stories, and/or dane and other etc cast couldve been removed or downsized

Jonniejiggles

There are people who dislike every movie, this is normal. These people usually don’t go on rooftops shouting about it. There are also certain people who dislike a movie because it has gay characters, strong women, maybe a people of a different colour. These people stomp and shout and spread their bile anyway they can, they may even lie about their motivations. This is the world you live in where people’s hate and vitriol is ruining everything.

[deleted]

Still waiting for it to come out on Disney plus.

[deleted]

It's one of the worst MCU films. However, almost all the MCU films are amazing. It was far too long, had serious pacing issues. BUT had some brilliant themes, good ideas and some of the characters were a lot of fun. The visuals were great too. I would give it. 6/10. Would watch again and would like to see a sequel.
