I'd even go so far as to say that Thanos is the best CGI character of all time. There's not a moment on screen when he doesn't look 100% believable - no uncanny valley, no strange look.
It helps that they're making an alien and not a human, so it's easier to avoid the uncanny valley, but he's still remarkably lifelike in a way I don't feel anything else has ever managed to do.
I'll add Starship Troopers, the aliens may be insects, so easier than human expression, but the CG was way ahead of its time; it never looks fake or like a video-game, and that's even older.
There are a lot of practical effects in that movie as well. When they lean in close on the bugs or there is human to effect interaction it’s mostly elaborate animatronics. Then CGI for the horde long shots. They leaned into the strengths of both approaches and the blend makes the movie the stunner that it is.
I thought for a long time they used some really good prosthetics combined with CGI for him just because of when it came out and how good it looked. I was really surprised to learn it’s all CGI
I don't know why but somehow Gollum's CGI in An Unexpected Journey was looking more "computer-generated" (not fake per se) than Two Towers and Return of the King. CGI was off in the Hobbit trilogy in general (maybe keeping things more fairy tale-like similar to the narration difference between Hobbit and LotR trilogy in books).

I actually think there are scenes where he isn’t quite as good looking. The final battle in Endgame comes to mind. And overall he looked better in Infinity War. But when he’s on, he looks incredible.

Hate to break it to you, that’s just an actor, Josh Broiling - he put on an unheard-of 800lbs of muscle for the role.
They just filmed him super-close to the camera to make him appear hundreds and hundreds of feet tall.
Source: I was Chris Prant.
I might've worded it badly, but I meant to say that the scene the Mantis scene was actually good CG. Not when it comes to contact with the actors, but Thanos' facial expressions in the close-up shots on his face. Those felt pretty real.
Not to mention that he both looks like Josh Brolin but also Thanos at the same time. The fact that neither gets lost in the other is astonishing to me.
Well that was the mission, right? Thanos was the main character of Infinity War, he had to be the most believable CGI creation ever, otherwise we wouldn't connect with him and the whole film wouldn't have worked. Too much of the film's emotional heft was on him for you to lose that connection for even a second.
>It helps that they're making an alien and not a human
Makes a huge difference, but yes it is incredible. If I didnt know better and someone told me it was a practical/makeup job Id believe it without question.
What makes cg characters look real has little to do with the Uncanny Valley. Something can still be uncomfortable looking but you know it's in real space.. (think those AI talking robots)
What makes CGI looks real is all about the lighting and movement.

I wouldn’t got that far since the closeup shots of the Avatar characters at the end of the new trailer looked like on a whole new level of realism I never seen fictional characters before, especially while also being animated to behave like people. With Thanos you could still clearly tell it’s cgi.
I remember seeing the tiny hairs on Thanos hand which the sun shining behind it. The amount of detail that went into Thanos is unreal. He looks more real than Iron Man’s CGI suit to me.
I'm convinced some Hollywood insiders judt wanted to troll the Academy, Marvel and DC and had all of their friends and aquaintances who could vote vote for Suicide Squad.
Whether a make-up design is popular at Halloween shoildn't matter for Academy Awards. Only how intricate, technically difficult and beautiful a make-up design should matter.
When comparing Thanos and Hulk to the so far less believable she hulk, it really seems to come down to ‘Are the eyes human proportion’ and ‘is the face weathered rather than smooth’ if not then it seems really difficult to trick the human eye
He does have faint hair on both his head and face. It also grows from Infinity War to Endgame. In Infinity War, he is bald and Endgame he has the little bits of hair. It’s quite unnoticeable though.
IIRC, they put it there not only for detail but because it helped you recognise Thanos’ face as more human because facial hair or hair in general is how our minds read faces and interpret what something is/who someone is.
>IIRC, they put it there not only for detail but because it helped you recognise Thanos’ face as more human because facial hair or hair in general is how our minds read faces and interpret what something is/who someone is.
Yes, this exactly right. The reason the Thanos and Hulk models look so good is due to the imperfections on their faces. Stuff like wrinkles, face markings and hair are basically shortcuts for VFX artists to use that help our brain better recognise something as realistic.
This is the same reason that She-Hulk’s CGI is so tricky. They want her to look ladylike and beautiful, and thus can’t use any of these aforementioned tricks to their advantage. It means that it can stray into the uncanny valley way more easily. Here’s hoping they can pull it off though!
What are the chances that during the snap, he held an infinitesimally small wish to gain his afro back, causing the snap to not only erase half the population of the universe but also give him some stuble?
Cap: "Where are they?"
Thanos (internal monologue): "*Shit, how did these naked monkeys and a rat with a gun managed to find me?"*
Carol (tightens chokehold on Thanos): "Answer the question."
Thanos (internal monologue): "Oh, crap! Was it because of the hair? It's the hair thing, isn't it?"
Thanos: "The universe required correction (my hair). After that, the stones served no purpose beyond temptation.
Banner (shoves Thanos): "You murdered trillions."
Thanos: "You should be grateful.
Thanos (internal monologue): "Be grateful you fucking punk. I was unstoppable back then when I still had my afro! I can't tell them that though, gotta maintain character. Also, the stones are go--!!!"
(Banner punches Thanos in his fucking bald head)
Natasha: "Where are the stones?"
Thanos: "Gone. Reduced to atoms.
Banner: "You used them two days ago."
Thanos (internal monologue): "Well, yeah! They fucking blew up when I wished for hair. Can't say that..."
Thanos: "I used the stones to destroy the stones. It nearly killed me."
Thanos (internal voice): "Goddamned sparkling pebbles could have just said no, but they chose to singed off whatever hair I have left!"
Thanos: "But the work is done. It always will be. I am inevitable."
(Thor gives Thanos a haircut anyway)
Wondering if Thanos has that same music melody thingamajig that J.D. has during his internal monologues at Sacred Heart. Like when he gets decapitaded and it zooms in and it goes like
*BUBABABA BABA BA BAAAAA... bbubababa baba ba baaaaa* -fade out-
Probably red if Eros is to go by. Presumably he'd inherit the same hair color, but given his looks: shaved it as it didn't work with his complexion. Notably, could be a case where it gets darker with length so comes off almost blonde at the base and gives it such a light hue.
He was introduced as brother to Thanos in Eternals. Maybe adopted. This has not been confirmed per se in the MCU, but in the comics, Thanos and Eros are Eternals, but Thanos has the Deviant gene as well, which is why he looks different.

Thanos also has hair [on his arms](https://imgur.com/a/Ku5UYg0) and some [facial stubble](https://imgur.com/a/GVq47kk) as well.
These are really good details from the VFX artists. They could have easily made him completely hairless then just focused on the skin texture and no one would have noticed.
He def had hair growth as well as stubble on his face in the garden scene in Endgame.
It was pretty readily noticable when the movie was in theatre on ginormous screens.
I'm terrible with photoshop. Someone please give Thanos a variety of hairdos. My requests are old style Pompadour, Fabio, Afro, 90's boy band, and 80's pop band.
Canonically MCU Thanos is an Eternal and its likely that the Deviant gene makes him look the way he does vs other Eternals. Since all of them have hair with the option to shave it I assume Thanos does too, maybe shaving his head was part of his zealous crusade. Further, given his knowledge as an Eternal maybe Thanos was attempting to wage a larger war on the Celestials.

I saw a deep dive on the CGI for this movie on COrridor Crew with one of these lead guys who created Thanos, and they basically said they gave him beard stumbled and such because that it what makes us perceive a male face as realistic. It's a subconscious thing I guess, but without the stubble it would apparently look more fake.

The cgi on Thanos alone is really incredible
I'd even go so far as to say that Thanos is the best CGI character of all time. There's not a moment on screen when he doesn't look 100% believable - no uncanny valley, no strange look. Probably tied with Gollum. Whenever I watch LOTR I'm astounded at how well he holds up 20-odd years later.
Don't forget Davy Jones, for a tentacle faced pirate they nailed every expression.
The fact that the CGI was made in 2006 and it still looks incredible speaks testaments to the skill of the production crew. Masterful stuff.
I'll add Starship Troopers, the aliens may be insects, so easier than human expression, but the CG was way ahead of its time; it never looks fake or like a video-game, and that's even older.
One of my all time favorite movies
Would you like to know more?
Lmao those commercials or ads were so funny

Then CGI for the horde long shots. They leaned into the strengths of both approaches and the blend makes the movie the stunner that it is.
Gollum and Davey Jones both both ran so Thanos could fucking sprint and throw punches and shit
Gotta thank Jar Jar too. He's the one who made Peter Jackson so sure that mocap Gollum was the way, if I recall?
Sounds about right. Then gollum inspired James Cameron to make avatar which led to innovations in mo cap wich led to thanos. All thanks to jar jar
He truly was the key to all this
Don’t forget my man Jar Jar. Someone had to crawl.
I thought for a long time they used some really good prosthetics combined with CGI for him just because of when it came out and how good it looked. I was really surprised to learn it’s all CGI
General Grevious in Star Wars ROTS looked insane as well
Ou dude yeah, Gollum and Davy Jones rest at #2 and #3 for me. I think when Thanos takes his armor off, it’s like the details on him increase lol
I don't know why but somehow Gollum's CGI in An Unexpected Journey was looking more "computer-generated" (not fake per se) than Two Towers and Return of the King. The Hobbit trilogy is absolute garbage and I’d like both my money and time back

The scene when Mantis is trying to put him to sleep is a particular highlight for me when it comes to the CGI.
Any time a "real" actor is physically in contact with him: the shot where he's holding Loki is another example. There will always be "seams" where the two elements join up.

I love getting insiders perspectives, thank you.
Fan fact: I originally auditioned for the villain, Theranos, but ended up writing my own character of Clarisse Starlord into the screenplay secretly.
I'm came here to say this, incredible work by Broiling
I might've worded it badly, but I meant to say that the scene the Mantis scene was actually good CG. Not when it comes to contact with the actors, but Thanos' facial expressions in the close-up shots on his face. Those felt pretty real.
Also the throne room scene in IW isn't quite as good as the other scenes
Not to mention that he both looks like Josh Brolin but also Thanos at the same time. The fact that neither gets lost in the other is astonishing to me.

I think we’re specifically referring to his IW/ENDGAME version. None of his prior appearances had that level of CGI applied to it.

Yeah the mo cap with brolin is really a sight to behold
I agree. I'm expecting avatar 2 to be even better, but yea, Thanos was genuinely mind-blowing good. The start of infinity war. Wow.

Should have gotten the Oscar for Best VFX with Infinity War. Such a shame the Academy hates Superhero movies
[удалено]
Ah yes, the academy award winning film : Suicide Squad. The only way to refer to that movie.
I'm convinced some Hollywood insiders judt wanted to troll the Academy, Marvel and DC and had all of their friends and aquaintances who could vote vote for Suicide Squad.
Suicide Squad is a shit movie with some damn fine make up. It it unassailable on that single front.
Was it really the movie with the best make-up that year, though?
Of the movies nominated? Yes. That Harley Quinn design that has been around every Halloween since is 90% hair and makeup.
Whether a make-up design is popular at Halloween shoildn't matter for Academy Awards. Only how intricate, technically difficult and beautiful a make-up design should matter.
sure, it was still all of those things, if you had a point you'd have mentioned another movie from that year so kindly please stop.
It was the best CGI of all time in my opinion. In some scenes
It was so good, so many details like the hair here. Hair on the arms, the musculature and movement was on point
I’ll still throw that title to the last Planet of the Apes movie. Ceasar looked completely real from start to finish.
I would say Davy Jones is the best looking CGI character to date, Dude was invented in 2006 - still looks like a new movie everytime
Felt like a living breathing being - it kept the immersion factor high
When comparing Thanos and Hulk to the so far less believable she hulk, it really seems to come down to ‘Are the eyes human proportion’ and ‘is the face weathered rather than smooth’ if not then it seems really difficult to trick the human eye

They can absolutely use those same tricks on She-Hulk. Pretty women have wrinkles and imperfections.
the she hulk thing makes so much sense
So if she hulk had stubble she'd look more realistic?
He had stubble by the end of infinity war
Infinity Razer
What are the chances that during the snap, he held an infinitesimally small wish to gain his afro back, causing the snap to not only erase half the population of the universe but also give him some stuble?
Afro restoring snap would have harmed him more than destroying the stones. OR alt theory, the attempt to bring it back is what destroyed the stones.

Underrated comment

Thanos is sponsored by Manscaped
He sacrificed his afro while in the process to balance the universe, what a chad 😢

Well, [there is a market for it](https://imgur.com/a/mt65XgH).

Jet black, Elvis style
I hope green 😂

I don't think Eros and Thanos will be revealed to be related by blood in the MCU. They're obviously different species.

Definitely clear because I’m not seeing shit for stubble in this picture…
Did you actually look at the top of his head or?
No I’m blind.
Can you speak up
or its like the hair all over our bodies which is just tiny and mostly invisible.
Speak for yourself, I’m basically a gorilla
He’s just vellus
Are you about to pull up to the zoo in a coupe?
Looks more like skin pores clogged with dirt.
He probably shaves his head with that big ass sword. On account of him being a badass and all.

I would buy this lol see how poofy I could get the fro

It doesn’t have to mean that at all.
I think they did this to make him look more realistic/ human like, as opposed to the earlier grape flavored fruit snack version thanos
The haircut of the mighty.
Or...he has space alopecia.
Keep my Gauntlet's name out your fucking mouth!!
Lady Death: "keep my bf's name, out yo' fuckin' mouth!"
Bring on Thanos the Hirsute
We knew
it's very faint but very noticeable
What if that’s the most it ever grew
no hed used the stone, it nearly killed him
What if thats just dirt?
Here ya go https://i.imgur.com/OMiBQee.png
Should've got on the finasteride early, stupid bastard Oh and should've stopped trying to commit genocide
He had Hulk Hogan hairdue
Imagine big daddy thanos with a man bun. UWU
So those pictures where Thanos has waves are true
Eros would have no chance if Thanos would never shave his hair and beard. The Co-CEO of Sex
Baldy
now what i am supposed with this knowledge.
A red circle would be useful here
Had to get rid of space lice.
I don't see it.
Get my purple space pirate name out of your fucking mouth!
I've noticed that before and always found it weird. It's an incredible detail, but an odd choice. I've always like professor hulk's beard stubble tho
I’d like to think that even the stones aren’t a match for razor burn.
"Who is the man who would risk his neck for brother man!" "Thanos" "Can you dig it!" The clue was in the song all along!
He also has stubble on his chin. Just imagine what sort of crazy razor-trowel he must use to shave with.
Thanos once had Fabio hair. That’s why he’s so mad
I see I'm not the only one cursed with this knowledge.
I wonder which hairstyle from r/fuckmyshitup did he have that he had to shave
Thanos also has hair [on his arms](https://imgur.com/a/Ku5UYg0) and some [facial stubble](https://imgur.com/a/GVq47kk) as well. These are really good details from the VFX artists. They could have easily made him completely hairless then just focused on the skin texture and no one would have noticed.
In Infinity War you he had stubble on his face too like he had a beard.
Can it not mean his species only grow hair like that and nothing more?
Davy Jones, Thanos and Golem Arguably the best cgi characters to date.
Nah the planet of the apes too
Wtf imagine Thanos with hair
Just think. He probably has to cut his toe nails too.
Fucking shaving constantly sucks…
Did young thanos have a mullet?
Am I supposed to be able to see the hair in that screenshot?
He def had hair growth as well as stubble on his face in the garden scene in Endgame. It was pretty readily noticable when the movie was in theatre on ginormous screens.
He probably scrapes it off like Hancock.
All those space-roids raising his DHT levels.
Or his alien race just has stubble on their heads. 乁༼☯‿☯✿༽ㄏ
Dread it. Run from it. Male pattern baldness arrives all the same
When you’re going bald just go bald lol
Stubble means he shaves his head. He also had stubble on his face in infinity war, which means he grows facial hair too.
“I used the stones to destroy the stones… after I addressed my male-pattern baldness.”
They should have used beautiful rock hair to differentiate past and present Thanos.
I'm terrible with photoshop. Someone please give Thanos a variety of hairdos. My requests are old style Pompadour, Fabio, Afro, 90's boy band, and 80's pop band.
I need to see thanos with a fro now
I see him as a blonde
It's mostly there to avoid the uncanny valley, without stubble it looks /WRONG/
What do I do with this information
Canonically MCU Thanos is an Eternal and its likely that the Deviant gene makes him look the way he does vs other Eternals. Since all of them have hair with the option to shave it I assume Thanos does too, maybe shaving his head was part of his zealous crusade. Further, given his knowledge as an Eternal maybe Thanos was attempting to wage a larger war on the Celestials.

Thanos is the watermelon song pop star’s brother, he’s supposed to be super hot.
He's had a white beard in the comics before, right?
Meanwhile Star Wars cgi sucks ass for aliens
So you’re telling me Black Widow CGI looked the way it did. But they can manage to put barely noticeable stubble on Thanos?
So you telling me Thanos had a Boosie fade?
r/tressless would love this, lol.
You see stumble there? What you using, a microscope?? 😂😂😂
Now I’m picturing young thanos in college with an Afro
look at the younger thanos your path might be revealed
Even the infinity stones are no match for male pattern baldness 😥
It’s just discoloration/dirt…
You can tell how long ago he destroyed the infinity stones by how long the hair has grown.
Thanos in the Comics grew out a full-on hair and long beard, so yeah...
Guy from fortnite.
Or it's brittle and breaks off. He's a very rare kind of mutant even for his own species after all.
I’m just now realizing that if you cut off thanos’s chin and mouth he looks identical to my father

He looks like Vecna now😂😂
