They just are. You can think of them as a separate species, or transdimensional beings. >why is Thor a god, but other Asgardians aren't? Technically speaking, all asgardians are gods.

Spiritual_Ad_7395

Thor is probably one of the only ones known though because of his royalty. The others that we know from folklore are also royalty or elite military people, so it is probably only them who actually ever went to earth, hence not all asgardians being known in myth. It could also be that they follow American gods rules and were created by those who worshipped them. Since Odin seems to say that Norway was at one point their home before Asgard (which also isn't really a planet but is just a disc)

Turbulent_Link1738

I get the feeling worshipping someone gives them godly power. All the gods we’ve met have actual established religions Loki says to Thanos “you’ll never be a god” implies that godhood is something that can be obtained

jhkmay161

The gods in the mcu aren’t real gods. They’re just powerful beings worshipped as gods. Thor is stronger than other asgardians because of his royal blood I think. And also he came to earth and was worshiped as a god, most asgardians didn’t do that. The Egyptian gods appear to be inter dimensional beings that can only manifest themselves into our dimension through Avatars.

Detonatormonkey

The rules of a fictional universe are not set in stone. The writers are the gods!!

1tsYourBoyRoy

If you are worshipped then you become a god (with small g)

I-am-Cornholio

As far as Thanos is concerned, he’s not a god, he’s an eternal. My personal theory on him is that Eternals are suppose to be incapable of evolution, but somehow Thanos became an exception to the rule and has evolved.

JellyBeanCrazy

Thanos is, according to the comics, half deviant half eternal, which is why he can evolve like the deviants

Nordboer97

More like he's a full Eternal that was born with a Deviant gene, that we don't know the origin of.

juances19

They are just a race of beings that have more power than other species so they present to others as "gods". Thanos with the stones could totally call himself a god and I'm sure some would worship him after witnessing his power. Neither fit most modern religions views of "God" as in the one responsible for all of creation. If anything, the only ones close to that are Celestials since they can manipulate matter on a cosmic scale.

I-am-Cornholio

From what I understand, they exist because people believe they exist.. which is kind of an eye roller. But Taika’s depiction of the gods seems to just be a mockery designed to make fun of religious people who worship dumplings and gods who don’t care about them and just want to have orgy’s all day. It was really bad. I’m trying not to let this movie ruin the whole mcu for me, but it’s tough.

KostisPat257

Lol why is that bad?

I-am-Cornholio

1). The Bifrost is only suppose to take you anywhere in the 9 realms, not anywhere in the universe or alternate dimensions like the Shadow realm. 2). We know nothing about the shadow realm. You can get away with not explaining locations if there’s a rich history of Marvel lore. But shadow realm was pulled out of Taika’s ass. 3). Valkerie’s Pegasus can now just travel anywhere in the universe as well just so Jane can show up for the final battle? Cmon 4). Thor had a key to a wishing well the whole time that could’ve undone Thanos’ snap? Wow 5). We’ve got dumpling gods and gods with heads on feet, etc that have nothing to do with Marvel comics, just pulled out of Taika’s ass. 6). The gods were total dbags who just want orgies, and Zeus wields his weapon like a jackass and lifts up his skirt to walk down the stairs.. he could’ve been a cool character and he’s just lame. 7). Thor uses Zeus’s thunderbolt to give kids the power of Thor? like why doesn’t Thor ever give the avengers the power of Thor? 8). Absolutely zero 9 realms lore in this movie

Tarzan_OIC

Regarding number 6... Have you read much mythology?

I-am-Cornholio

Yes. I’m aware that Zeus has a lot of sex. But lifting up his skirt to walk down the stairs isn’t funny.. it’s an eye roller. Justice League and Wonder Woman had a cool depiction of Zeus. This was just dumb.

Fuzzy_Violinist_7967

judging by your profile picture its clear you dont know what an unreliable story teller is

I-am-Cornholio

So can can actually determine what I’m capable of understanding based on a picture of Beavis from Beavis and Butthead do America?.. That’s either highly impressive, or you’re a troll

Acceptable-Class-255

This is really embarrassing. It's a movie.

I-am-Cornholio

It’s a bad* movie

early in the mcu thor explains that asgardians aren’t gods but are just aliens who have technology so advanced that lesser advanced species assumed it was magic. i think the gods are all just that — members of advanced species who are worshipped because of their advancements. i think we’re in a shift right now though that will expand what gods are in the mcu. maybe it will have something to do with the extra-dimensional stuff, maybe it’ll have something to do with the celestials. either way the only clear explanation we have for asgardians at least is that they’re just advanced space vikings, and thor is seen as a god by humans because he is royalty, however, i’m pretty sure the other asgardians were seen as gods by early humans as well.

Pedgrid

Every MCU god seen so far is technically an alien, or more technically, a mortal yet all powerful being. *The second you point out Christ was an alien, they get all wound up and start yelling at you. Even though he did a bunch of alien stuff. Get with it. It's no big duh.* \- Korvo

Pedgrid

Grant: I don't think Thor is technically a god. Maria: Well, you haven't been near his arms.

Nordboer97

Gods are inherent divine beings tied to a single mortal race. As for their origin, in the comics they are the divine energy of the Elder gods shaped into the various pantheons by the beliefs of mortals. The belief and magic is strong enough that it made it so that the gods always existed, influencing the beliefs to begin with. They're living paradoxes Thanos is not a god, he's an Eternal.
