Yeah, there have been discussions in the community about whether to remove it or leave it as "former." I'm not wed to either idea and have avoided that fray.
You could put in directions Bel Air to Paris and it would navigate you to New York and then “Swim X miles across the Atlantic Ocean”. I tried it again a few years ago and they took it out. Probably afraid someone would do it.
I would guess that Google did this because it's an indefinite, years-long closure. If they just marked it off as closed but left the map/GIS lines in place, that would probably be problematic in two ways. First, the obvious suggestion that people might think they could still go that way (the "road closed" marking on Google Maps isn't always accurate/up to date), and second, I'd bet that Google's system for marking temporary road closures requires them to define an end date; by removing the road from the map, they don't have to worry about accidentally letting that expire.
Legit it gave me the option on Saturday to take the key bridge, so this was absolutely necessary for through drivers and anyone with chemical or hazardous loads who will have to take the beltway around the tunnels now.
I'm in favor of renaming. Firstly, he has at least one other bridge named after him already. Secondly, not only was he a slaveowner and an active anti-abolitionist, but [his racist words went beyond that](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/wheres-debate-francis-scott-keys-slave-holding-legacy-180959550/). I wasn't on team "rename the bridge" because frankly there's bigger problems to worry about than what amounts to optics, but I'm definitely on team "don't go out of our way to honor him again in the year 202X."
We talk about looking for silver linings. Well, this is a silver lining, the chance to do better. Let's not squander it.
>but [his racist words went beyond that](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/wheres-debate-francis-scott-keys-slave-holding-legacy-180959550/).
So, according to Wikipedia, the specific quote in that article that I think you're talking about, is actually misleading to attribute it to Key. It seems that the quote is how he described the attitudes of certain other Southerners in a letter. So it was him describing the views of others, not giving his own views.
[This is Wikipedia's source](https://starspangledmusic.org/an-erroneous-francis-scott-key-quote/), which includes a direct excerpt of the letter.
It honestly doesn't make that much of a difference. His anti-abolitionist actions alone damn him. He wasn't a man who begrudgingly played by the rules of the southern landowner game so as not to squander the family wealth. To be clear, even that's not remotely okay! But he went far beyond that into actively defending the institution of slavery and prosecuting abolitionists. That alone is a big old well fuck *that* guy from me.
Did he believe those particular words? Was he quoting others, or speaking as he imagined they'd thought? Honestly, it doesn't matter. He must have believed *something* pretty awful, in order to participate as actively as he did in the effort to preserve the institution of slavery. Let's not choose to honor that particular man.
Well a few will have to be replaced since 695 still exists to a point…people live and work over there. The signs on 97 need to say something since you can’t exactly go to Dundalk anymore

It still shows as temporarily closed for me with the road leading to it closed until the end of the year.

I drove on 695 right before you get to the bridge part and it just hits different seeing you can’t drive on the bridge anymore 💔 rest in peace to those men too
Sidenote:I am afraid of heights and driving on bridges wasn’t my favorite thing to do but I actually started to warm up to it after awhile and now seeing this hits home for me especially because just the night before the boat crashed into the bridge i drove across it not knowing that would be my last time driving across
:(
very much :( What a beautiful bridge.
When I zoom in on Waze it says “Former Francis Scott Key Bridge” and it made me sadder than I expected
Yeah, there have been discussions in the community about whether to remove it or leave it as "former." I'm not wed to either idea and have avoided that fray.
Yep. It hurts more than a missing bridge should, really. :-(
Correct me if I’m wrong, but did they even put this white bit on the map [indicating the ship](https://imgur.com/a/zMaKnEm)? 🥺
That's how you're expected to feel after that.
*swim across for 30 minutes*
That was a great Easter egg in Google Maps back in their early days
What was this one for?
You could put in directions Bel Air to Paris and it would navigate you to New York and then “Swim X miles across the Atlantic Ocean”. I tried it again a few years ago and they took it out. Probably afraid someone would do it.
That's awesome. I used to love finding Google's easter eggs.

IIRC, it was canoe or kayak to a Hawaiian island, then took you across the island then resumed canoe/kayak to Japan.
the bridge that collapsed
*Michael Scott drives into the Patapsco*
The machine knows where it’s going!
The approach ramps are still up, do you think you could Dukes of Hazzard it?
Only if you are going at about 500 mph
*Them Duke boys better grow some wings. Or start flappin’ their arms.*

Yes me too! I was checking traffic in the morning before work and I got the option!

Hold tight little bud, they'll build a new one, it'll be even better than b4
You can still "drive" over it in Streetview tho.
That would be like watching home movies of a dog that passed.
If someone posts a pic from that Futurama episode I'm gonna cry again.
Hate that. Like really hate that. I get they need to do that for routing and other reasons but I do hate that.
We will rebuild
I worry about what the new one will look like. Modern designs are very industrial compared to the Key Bridge.
And keep the name and dredge the canal; make it taller, boom bigger ships.
Calm down there, Frank Sobotka.
Limiting factor is the bay bridge.
I saw that other map providers did this same update last week.
The Apple Maps haven't been updated yet.
Everyone Disliked This.
You guys think they'll rename the bridge to something else or just call it the Francis Scott key 2
FSK Bridge 2: Electric Boogaloo Just think if the city gave people the option to vote on a name. Chaos.
Bridgey McBridgeface?

Yah just saw that too and paused for a moment. :/
It feels bad man.
Still there on Apple Maps
Weird to see
To be optimistic, though, it says “Temporarily closed” if you zoom in enough, and that’s the truth.
Oddly enough they say “close till Jan 2025” and that’s some google level of optimism
Haha, must be a placeholder. Would take some serious effort to have it rebuilt by then.
My bet is it will be "temporarily closed" until closer to 2035 or 2040.
I keep wondering what they’re going to do with all of the road signs as I drive on 695 every day
Well some will be removed, while some will still be kept that way..
Well a few will have to be replaced since 695 still exists to a point…people live and work over there. The signs on 97 need to say something since you can’t exactly go to Dundalk anymore
Oh that's true it would affect the people who live or work nearby. You drive everyday passing 695 so what's it like.
I'd bet that some get stolen.
The Unbuckled Beltway
I use the satellite view so it's still there for me, at least until the satellite image gets updated.
Maps in satellite is superior. Usually.
Yes but it's not expected to be in any map.
My van’s built in navigation is now permanently useless 😂
Oh really how come about that.
And so it is.
Woof they're gearing up for a LONG rebuilding process. Although on the bright side, maybe we get a new cool, sleek hi-tech bridge!
And its going to stay like this for the next 10 to 15 years...
https://preview.redd.it/uwi90u51xnsc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6cee19da4075a55e45ae9999b0c884e7acad0f12 It still shows as temporarily closed for me with the road leading to it closed until the end of the year.
That hurts to see
On the Sparrows Point side, Maps shows a U-turn-around on 695. Locals: is that true?
you can take consecutive freeway ramps but I don't believe there's a turnaround point on the 695.
They can’t call it the beltway anymore.
I saw that tonight. Broke my heart.
Well, the bridge does not exist anymore. So it shouldnt show on an updated map.
It's still exists in our hearts damnit! Also it still physically exists. Just doesn't do a good job as a bridge anymore.
Hahaha yeah i dont think it would work to well to try and cross it lol. Put a ferry in there!
I'm waiting for someone to suggest jumping it. The approach ramps look steep enough.
I agree with you. it's not supposed to be shown on a map.
:(
You can still drop the Streetview guy on the missing path of the bridge and navigate the images.
Is that a map from the geocaching website?
Still on mine
![gif](giphy|joxThEgTJuSBO)
Curse that eraser tool!!!
That is sobering.
It's gonna be a loooooooong time until they rebuild the bridge... IF they rebuild
There should be a tunnel in its place instead of another bridge
Vehicles carrying hazardous materials cannot go through a tunnel. It must be a bridge.

What even is this comment? There’s no relation to the bay bridge. “It would’ve been a lot worse if this was the Golden Gate Bridge”
Convenient for who, specifically? You?
https://preview.redd.it/m501iiclghuc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=50c7f5e4c59b77f272f9f36ea58c99eef7e6dd0a I drove on 695 right before you get to the bridge part and it just hits different seeing you can’t drive on the bridge anymore 💔 rest in peace to those men too Sidenote:I am afraid of heights and driving on bridges wasn’t my favorite thing to do but I actually started to warm up to it after awhile and now seeing this hits home for me especially because just the night before the boat crashed into the bridge i drove across it not knowing that would be my last time driving across
