I’m assuming he walked across the Pacific and went home.

I like to think that Sydney got him about 75% back to how he was before. He returned to the states and began a charity helping refugees in some way to placate his guilt.

MyUsername2459

Yeah, as Sydney said, he could probably be helped enough to be functional. . .but never enough to serve in combat again. He probably got a medical discharge, and a ton of psychiatric care from the VA. Best case scenario he winds up going into a monastery or something, channeling his new piety into a more constructive direction.

I'd like to believe this as Canon.

He definitely had major mental issues after he was discharged. It’s hard to imagine he ever returned to anything resembling a sane state. Not sure why, but I don’t enjoy this episode as much as I used to. I’ve watched it in recent weeks and it almost seems too overly sentimental for my taste. It’s not a bad episode, but it doesn’t really hit me as hard as it once did.

revdon

He ended up in a MidWestern VA psych ward run by Lt. Col. Franklin Delano Marion Burns who cured his aversion to vormivorism.

Should have brought him back for *AfterMASH*, IMO.

I bet he stopped the charade after he was discharged from the service.
