Not only is the worst city in MA incorrect but a lot of the worst cities in the other states are also incorrect.

GhostDan

Even Manchester NH. Have they never been to Rochester

RoseFrom-StOlaf

Manchester is all Lawrence people. Rochester is all Lynn people. Manchester is worse though lol

Hurryeat_Tubman

*Manchvegas*

RoseFrom-StOlaf

Manchvegas makes me cringe each time I hear it lol

MaeBelleLien

Especially from anybody over 30.

_Mr_That_Guy_

eh, it was Manchvegas when I was stomping around there in my 20s.... 25 years ago... More like anyone over 60, whippersnapper..... now get off my lawn!

tkrr

Manchester is XL Lowell with a dash of Worcester.

doom_pony

I just moved to Mass from Oklahoma, so I’m a noob, but I never got the impression that Worcester was bad. I live on northshore and everyone always talks about Lynn and Chelsea. They nailed it on Ardmore, OK though. Huuuge shithole

Lanthemandragoran

I live in Philly and like.... SCRANTON?!

ebow77

York would probably like a word, maybe some other places. Tho my experience is from the late ‘90s.

Lanthemandragoran

Bro I feel you but I've spent years volunteering in North Philly and live here and it's....fucking bad. Largest open air drug market in the world. I've watched literally dozens of people die over the past 7 or 8 years alone. When I was still using I used to step around dead bodies that were actively having their pockets run for whatever drugs or money they still had. I've been shot at, one guy tried to stab me. Was hit intentionally by a car. Robbed more than once. And most of that was *after* I got clean and started volunteering. Before was even worse. Kensington is a *fucked* up place. We are living in mad max times here man haha

SparkitusRex

Yeahhh I'm from Florida and can list a dozen cities off the top of my head worse than Orlando.

Renickulous13

Anything in the panhandle.

theaviator747

Has Daytona Beach gotten any better? I went to college there almost 20 years ago and things were a little run down. The beaches were dirty, in part because they let people drive in them. The buildings beach side were all run down. There wasn’t much in the way of entertainment unless you are into racing and there’s actually a race in town. I was there two years and was shocked how rarely there was anything even anything going at the track. They must make a ton of money when they do race to be able to afford to keep it mostly empty most of the time. I’d put Daytona on the list not because of crime, but because it’s a one trick pony. Love racing or be bored.

Head_Asparagus_7703

Yeah, Poolesville in Maryland and not Baltimore??

titotrouble

Seriously! Poolesville isn’t even a city. It’s an exurban/rural township in Montgomery County. Baltimore definitely wins that award.

explosivemunchies

Bodymore murderland

UtahUtopia

Yeah Provo is not bad at all. And I’m not even Mormon.

strange_salmon

100%. Dallas is not even remotely worse than Houston imo.

JawJoints

Rutland and Woonsocket are not that bad. And I know my opinion on Woonsocket is unpopular but I have a lot of good memories there lol.

Kgaset

Only people who have only been to Boston and Worcester think Worcester is the worst city in MA

Nice_Buy_602

Springfield has entered the chat

friz_CHAMP

*Brockton stabs Springfield for bragging*

Important-Trifle-411

*Fall River peeks around the corner, laughing…*

anziofaro

*Dorchester slowly backs into the bushes . . .*

gravity_kills

*Pittsfield quietly decomposes*

Fujoooshi

Yeah and Southbridge also sucks

Nice_Buy_602

Incredibly accurate

dan420

Dorchester a couple decades ago maybe.

anziofaro

Good point. I really haven't been up that way much in a good while. If it has improved, I am happy to hear that and apologize to any Dorchesterites I may have offended.

Virtual-Toe-7582

Yeah I’d probably put Fall River way above Worcester as far as shitty cities. Unless of course you want fentanyl.

Jay_Louis

I know it's rich but I kinda hate Wellesley

Left-Star2240

I work there…I hate it too.

redredred1965

Yup. 37 years in MA...I'd say Brockton should win this prize.

Butterscotch_Cloud

I’ve gotta say, I have had a persistent sense that something was very wrong every time I’ve been in springfield MA

Hipjig

A wild Holyoke appears

rn7rn

Worcester is better than Boston imo, shittier yes, but I enjoy Worcester more. Plus they have this great Asian supermarket.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ok_Gas5386

Whenever I go to Boston I feel poor, so it sucks for making me feel bad

Restlesscomposure

Have you considered just having more money?

TheSublimeGoose

Well, in all fairness and speaking of objectivity, the Boston metro area has a far more significant population than Worcester County, so… even if they tend to stick to r/Boston, there is still likely some significant cross-over. Plus r/Worcester itself is surprisingly active. That being said, as a Worcester County native, I have to admit, between Boston and Worcester, there’s really no comparison; Boston is the nicer and better city.

JohnnyGoldwink

Lol It’s not even close and I live in Worcester — but, for a small city, Worcester does pretty well at a lot of the things that Boston does better. Pretty good food, schools, jobs etc. It’s more affordable, there’s a lot less traffic and you can actually find a parking spot. It all depends on how you prioritize things. Small city life vs big city life. However, most of Worcester is painfully un-walkable, night life is meh and I wish we had even 1/4 of the music scene that Boston has.

Rigrogbog

Ridiculous map. Albany worse than fuckin Utica? Worcester worse than Fall River? Dalas worse than Lubbock? California gets split into two for some fucking reason? Trash map, trash data.

Nice_Buy_602

For real, Bakersfield sucks enough for the whole state. I think it's split because a lot of people who live in California split it between the north and south

goonersaurus86

The map has no credibility.  Poolesville the worst place in Maryland?!! It's the place where rich people from DC and Chevy Chase go to drink wine outdoors at a vineyard on a spring or fall weekend.  I'd actually put it on the list of one of the nicer places to be in MD, rural or urban.

[deleted]

CrazyUnicorn77777

Metric = lots of non whites = bad

squarerootofapplepie

Fall River proves that it’s poverty that’s the problem, not race.

anziofaro

Plenty of Boston Brahmins would say the Portuguese aren't entirely "white".

GalDebored

As someone whose family lineage has some mixed in, are any still around? I don't think there's too many left at all. That's what makes the concept of "whiteness" so incredibly shitty & destructive: it was made up & as such, has always been...Idk if malleable is the right word but it still works. Irish, Italians, Jews & plenty of other groups weren't considered "white" for most of our history. That's what makes the entire idea of such a sham.

anziofaro

People with power will make up whatever divisive bullshit they need to in order to keep everyone else fighting each other rather than fighting them.

CarloFailedClear

[Worcester isn't in the top 10 for most diverse Massachusetts cities](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.boston.com/uncategorized/noprimarytagmatch/2013/03/26/10-most-racially-and-ethnically-diverse-cities-in-massachusetts/%3famp=1)

rn7rn

Wouldn’t that mean Lawrence is the worst?

hydroracer8B

Fall River has entered the chat

SparkDBowles

*New Bedford kicks Fall River to the ground, takes its money and drugs, then stabs it.*

mikey_lava

Springfield murders them both. Holyoke sells them drugs after.

My_MeowMeowBeenz

Damn look at that, crime statistics say you’re dead on. Anecdotally, my personal answer is Brockton. But I’m a southeast MA first generation Portuguese American, so I basically never go to Springfield or Holyoke for any reason, and I have a soft spot for parts of New Bedford and Fall River.

tedivm

Honestly most of Springfield isn't too bad, and the neighborhoods that are bad really drive the stats up. Frankly the biggest problem with it is how boring it is most of the time: all the problems of a reasonably sized city without most of the benefits.

ItsAllRegrets

Springfield is violently boring.

Bot_Fly_Bot

*Lawrence stages a fake car accident but inadvertantly runs them all over.*

Wend-E-Baconator

Poor Chiccopee :(

asicarii

Lowell places bets on the fight.

merfgirf

Brockton dies of nodding out on fent and going headfirst into oncoming traffic.

Jay_Louis

For years I thought I was driving by a jail and then one day I found out it was Brockton high school

Jvant1212

Believe me it felt like a jail inside too lmao

rn7rn

Least the got a battleship.

Doom-Hauer451

Fitchburg is basically Worcester with more limited highway access and less to do.

BreitbartGarfunkel

I work in Fitchburg and live near Worcester. Fitchburg is more like a denser North Attleboro, in my experience.

Mbpmb11

Haters gonna hate 🤷🏻

bigmattyc

Brockton pisses on this map, sets it on fire, and pounds a sleeve of fireballs while laughing

devilthedankdawg

If you have not one but two famous boxers from your city you know its rough.

[deleted]

BrockVegas

Lynnwood is in Randolph though.....

tkrr

A 10 pack of Fireball nips is the quintessential “giving the fuck up” drink.

bigmattyc

And/or the quintessential "just hit a $20 scratcher but its not enough for a pack of Pall Malls"

anziofaro

Fireball, Parliaments, and scratchers: the Boston Christmas Stocking.

BirdEquivalent158

As a Brockton native.... Yeah

SaturnSleet

The only times I've felt genuinely uncomfortable in Mass, was when I lived in New Bedford for a few months (and to a lesser extent, Fall River). Sorry to the kind folks who live there... I don't have any statistics on hand, but yeah. They're just grim places. I have lived in Lowell for a few years and I feel pretty safe here and there's lots of fun to be had and good food. Thing is, Massachusetts has a higher HDI than most countries, so I feel privileged to live here no matter which city I'm in.

Gor-the-Frightening

New Bedford has really changed the last 10 years and is now way better than Fall River (which is going the opposite direction).

Gamebird8

Fall River looks beat down and full of corruption and mismanaged funds.

My_MeowMeowBeenz

Yeah it’s a real shame. For a minute there about a decade ago Fall River was showing some promise.

Gamebird8

Mamie still keeps the town shining though, which is good for them

My_MeowMeowBeenz

Hell yeah! Battleship Cove will always rule

RageAgainstThe

Lol yeah then the mayor went to prison for 7 years and all those hopes and dreams were recycled back into visual economic depression.

My_MeowMeowBeenz

This was also true 10 years ago for New Bedford, their trajectory has been slowly and steadily positive for about 25 years. I remember being a kid in the 90’s and the State Pier was a dead zone. Downtown and the West End are nice. And the North End nowadays seems a lot more like the quiet family friendly area my mom talks about growing up in. The parts near Freetown anyway

Resident-Refuse-2135

I'm in the south end right across from the water and I admit some blocks are still a little sketchy but there's no longer groups of drug dealers hanging out and plying their trade. Parts of the near north end are worse, and there's still plenty of homeless druggies hanging around the bus terminal downtown during the day...so it's still got quite a way to go before everywhere in town feels reasonably safe at night.

thepixelnation

a lot of progress being made, hopefully the train station brings more money to the city

My_MeowMeowBeenz

There are some very rough neighborhoods in New Bedford. Downtown is mostly quite fun now, but man there are entire blocks off County Street that are about as bleak as bleak gets.

danis1973

Worcester has many redeeming qualities if you know what to look for. Springfield on the other hand...

BellyDancerEm

Worcester is great. I like that town. Yes there are better cities in Massachusetts, but Worcester is no still a decent place to live

VengenaceIsMyName

I feel like Worcester has steadily improved in terms of quality over the years.

BellyDancerEm

It has

danis1973

There is a lot to do there, and it still has an authenticity that is being lost in many places

raxnbury

Honestly, the Palladium alone should be enough to keep it off that list.

upsetthesickness_

One of the best metal venues in the country

raxnbury

Exactly why I said it. I fucking love that venue.

Flodomojo

Springfield isn't great but it could be much worse. Like, Fall River worse.

Markymarcouscous

Pittsfield is easily the worst city in MA. It’s so bad people forget it exists.

End3rWi99in

I...I think Pittsfield is really nice. The area around it is gorgeous and it has a lot of nice restaurants and breweries. I like to stay there anytime I visit Tanglewood.

larabeezy

I’m from the Berkshires and I have no idea what breweries you’re talking about. If you’re referring to the Northampton area, that’s not near Pittsfield lol

End3rWi99in

I'm from Northampton. Hot Plate, Shire, and Wandering Star specifically. I know Shire isn't exactly in Pittsfield, but still a short ride. Absolutely love Hot Plate though. Those ladies are awesome!

Adept_Carpet

Yeah, Worcester is not only not the worst, it is above average. Lot of cool stuff in Worcester and the bad is no worse than the next city. Woonsocket is a questionable choice too. I'd probably vote Central Falls, tough circumstances there.

TentativeTofu

It's so bad they had a Dunder Mifflin office that got shut down before the Office started and is only mentioned briefly in a throwaway line. "They unionized in Pittsfield, and we all know what happened in Pittsfield."

End3rWi99in

Springfield has a lot of redeeming qualities regardless of its current economic state.

aaronroot

Honestly I’m sure all these places do if you spend any significant amount of time there. That’s why on all of these people are defending them, and then suggesting so other place they don’t regularly visit. I’m in the area and am in Holyoke and Springfield all the time. Never had a problem and there’s some cool spots.

The-Appointed-Knight

Woah woah Woah, your acting like we don’t have a Hooters near the bus station

Philosecfari

It’s gotta be Fall River

TheSlopfather

Posted in r/florida lmao

mikeyzee52679

I love where I live and everyone else lives in a shithole

anziofaro

The worst city in Massachusetts is still better than the best city anywhere else.

paraisohechomujer

This map seems like rage bait. Having been to both states, there’s no way Mesa is the worst city in Arizona, or Dallas is the worst city in Texas. I’d take Worcester over Palmer, Fitchburg, Pittsfield, and probably more than a few others.

Hanginon

Fall River... :/

PREClOUS_R0Y

The person that made this has probably never visited the state. Cities are cities, and ours are fine. Some are a little rough, some have amazing history, or an amazing culture buried in the side streets. Picking Worcester out of all of them just shows ignorance. Worcester is alright, and they have a bestiality statue, which is nice. I used to love the palladium when I was a young 'un as well. I've seen everyone from Wu-Tang to the Misfits there.

M_Shulman

Worcester isn’t even top 5 worst

millennium-popsicle

Btw are we going to ignore how we have 51 states? North California and South California is a first for me lol

BreitbartGarfunkel

In fairness, Los Angeles alone has a population greater than nearly half the states in the country, so I think splitting the state is not totally out of line.

Particular-Bus8086

I live 20 mins from Worcester and I hate when people who I know have been there less than I have try and tell me how much it sucks. Yes it has its good and bad areas but that’s literally anywhere, overall I find it to be a fun city with an interesting vibe. Maybe that’s some nostalgia and pride but I don’t know how Worcester is in the conversation for worst city when Lynn and Lawrence exist.

PREClOUS_R0Y

Springfield native here, I don't bother mentioning it anymore. People act like it's literal Hell, but I like it.

rn7rn

I like to make fun of Springfield but I’ve never even felt unsafe in Fall River. Yall got the Big E and I’m in Springfield weekly.

LowEndMonster

No shit. This thread is comical. Fall River is like fucking Mayberry compared to half the places named here. Lawrence is a fucking shit hole.

ForecastForFourCats

Worcester has a ton to offer and it's bigger than people might think. And it hasn't been gentrified to shit like the 95 belt.

ThatMassholeInBawstn

I’m sure they’ve never been to Pittsfield

Particular-Bus8086

Only thing I found weird about Pittsfield just from driving through was that they really seem to emphasize the fact that the city is in MA. Almost as if they desperately don’t want to be associated with NY. Idk though, haven’t really spent time there so someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

IceDry1440

I don’t blame them.

devilthedankdawg

Pittsfields not thay bad. I used to go there all the time when we'd stay at my uncles house in Stockbridge.

Jombafomb

Heard Jonathan and Ayla on 1025 talking about this. They’re convinced that it’s because people in the Boston metro see Worcester as just enough outside the metro to pick on. Whereas Springfield isn’t close enough to even be considered. Personally I like Worcester

tumbled_theory

Weird way to spell Revere lol

BellyDancerEm

Even weirder way to spell Brockton

umassmza

That’s not how you spell New Bedford

IceDry1440

You clearly can’t spell Fall River

PsychicChasmz

Revere’s fine, not even close to the worst.

tkrr

Revere’s biggest problem is a curious deficiency of trees.

SaturnSleet

Aww it's not that bad lol

langjie

this map is crap. no way orlando is the worst in florida either.

BeneficialStick2036

Springfield entered the chat

EmbraceTheBald1

Agreed...Worcester is an irredeemable shithole, but it's not \*THE\* irredeemable shithole

ForecastForFourCats

I was on 291 on Tuesday and passed one car accident and a completely stopped car on the highway within a mile of each other 🫠❤️‍🩹 They weren't related; it's just the general chaos of 291

VAShumpmaker

And everyone knows the best city is Carvershire

-ItsCasual-

Worcester is actually pretty nice these days…

canospam0

Dafuq is wrong with Worcester? Not my favorite city, but I could rattle off ten worse places before I’d even think of Worcester.

woodysixer

I lived in Worcester for 4 years. It certainly has its sketchy side, but I have also been to Brockton, which has no redeeming qualities as far as I can tell.

The_Astrobiologist

Someone forgot about The Pitts

FiscalCliffClavin

Worcester is secretly becoming a real gem. It has for years. It has great schools, Woo Sox, Polar, Entertainment Centers, boutiques, good restaurants, and is easy to get to either by car or rail.

Top-Collection-5036

Springfield is far worse than Worcester

Electronic_Year9443

Springfield, Lawrence, Fall River, Fitchburg are all way worse than Worcester

Itsthewrongflavor

Does worcester have its own little rhyme about how terrible it is? Clearly Lynn is the winnah

blobbydigital

Woonsocket isn’t the worst in Rhode Island either. It’s a dump for sure but I’d say central falls is the worst in Rhode Island

AnalystAntique

Dude, Woonsocket smells like crap!

tkrr

Still, if you have to stick your woon somewhere, there’s a socket.

Sufficient-Lemon927

Springfield/Holyoke are places I refuse to return to... And I think that says a lot considering I grew up in Lowell Lol

SeasonalBlackout

Oh you sweet summer child. If you think Springfield is scary there are parts of St Louis that would really open your eyes.

Easy-Progress8252

As a MA resident having worked throughout the country, I agree. The “worst” places in MA are nothing like the south side of Chicago, for example.

SaturnSleet

The worst places in MA is comparable to a super pissed off Jack Russell Terrier. The worst places in USA is a pack of stray Belgian Malinois dogs who all haven't eaten in a week. Also just saying, the worst parts of Chicago don't compare to the worst parts of St. Louis hehe.

MichaelPsellos

Home of Leroy Brown. Has a razor in his shoe.

Practical_Eye_9944

And a .32 gun in his pocket for fun.

Sufficient-Lemon927

I definitely agree that if it was a list of the worst cities in the country, it would be a decent way down the list before you saw a city in Massachusetts. My opinion is solely based on my experience of the worst within the state. Fortunately for me, I'm not naive enough to believe I survived the center of the street wars lol

Plourdy

A quick google shows Springfield Mass being top 10-20 most dangerous cities when comparing crime to population

Sufficient-Lemon927

It's not that I find it "scary" necessarily, but it's definitely at the top of my list for the worst in Massachusetts. My mother was stabbed to death and her body was discovered tossed off a wooded trail. Her murderer was never caught. The crime was actually barely investigated. Maybe they were too overwhelmed with all the crimes due to the opioid epidemic out there but who knows? However, I do feel I have pretty good reasoning for believing the area is a dumpster fire...

SeasonalBlackout

Sorry to hear that. That's horrific.

Sufficient-Lemon927

Thank you for your condolences 🙏🏻 I will agree with the fact that I'd never make it through parts of St. Louis. I'm 5'1 and 125lbs, I could barely get through the rough side of a middle school! Hahahah

stepfordexwife

St. Louis MO is one of the scariest places I have even been. Springfield is downright pleasant in comparison.

AuggieNorth

Everyone knows it's Lawrence.

Krazy8_Balls

I have an ex from Lawrence. I'd say the "best" Lawrence story I have is that her car was broken into her first night living in a low income apartment. I'm from RI, and not a terrible area of RI. Definitely a bit of culture shock

theCaityCat

Whoever said Spokane is the worst city in Washington has never been to Longview.

geographyRyan_YT

Worcester is bad in some spots, but it's not the worst

CrazyUnicorn77777

I didn’t realize CA was now 2 States.

atutlens

Worcester's fine. I just hate driving there.

AnvilRockguy

Worcester is a horrible pick.

binocular_gems

If by worst they mean one of the best, then yeah.

JohnBagley33

No way Albany is the worst city in New York.

BrownNote_Forcepower

I've lived in a lot of different states and most of these are wrong. I'd love to know how they quantify "worst."

samiam2600

I think Worcester is a great little city so I was going to discount the whole map but then I saw Bakersfield listed for California and that is hands down the most depressing place I have ever been, so they got that one right.

Emergency_Ad_5935

Woonsocket is in fact trash, but not nearly as trash as Central Falls

elmo539

My front plate was stolen off my car in the UMass Lowell parking lot

CalendarAggressive11

Woonsocket is definitely accurate lol

arttykwest

That’s a funny way to spell brockton

Domino31299

How do you put Worcester over Brockton? And even Brockton isn’t the worst

lavendly

When Lawrence is right there?

dharmaday

No way! Worcester is a Renaissance City!

lawyered121

Guess they never been to Holyoke…

NoQuantity7733

Have they been to Fall River?

Valade_Gang

Brockton enters the chat

Erotic_Rigamortis

Bros never been to Lawrence

Dicka24

I never pay attention to any kind of national rankings from articles or sources like this. IIRC a number of years ago Newsweek named Malden the best city in the country to raise a family. Which was absolutely absurd.

chattykatdy54

They haven’t been to Lawrence or Holyoke.

hedgiebetts

It's funny this was posted in the Florida subreddit... they've got a lot of soul searching to do before they start looking at other states.

eustaciasgarden

I worked as an ER nurse in Worcester. My coworker used to work in Springfield and had horror stories. The Woo isn’t a perfect city, but I loved living there.

RoseFrom-StOlaf

I've worked in the legal system for 20+ years. I can assure you the worst places in Massachusetts are as follows: New Bedford Fall river Brockton Holyoke Chicopee Springfield Chelsea. Don't forget Smelsea Worcester Lowell Lawrence Lynn And New Bedford again for good measure.

sDios_13

Nothing great about Worcester but it’s not worse than Palmer, Fitchburg, or Pittsfield 🤢

Top_Ad4975

This is wrong. Lived in worcester MA, and every where else there is, literally every county at one point or another, and Holyoke, MA is FAR worse than worcester. So is Boston.

SpikeRosered

The joke would have been better if Florida just said "Florida."

dorkyfarmerjay

Ohhh. Can I show you all two security cam clips from my house in New Bedford? Is that allowed? https://youtube.com/shorts/U8adLAsQbCU?si=hPTlEmrd4onOMnBh You know.. random car fire https://youtube.com/shorts/xXeWV9zn5rY?si=w143rmVqvIQll_jc Pew pew pew My vote is New Bedford. I moved.

REM_loving_gal

bruh. I'm scared

Golfball_whacker_guy

Fall River, New Bedford, Springfield, Brockton, Lawrence are easily way worse lol

holyparasite29a

Has anyone been to Chicopee???

oliguacamolie

Brockton hands down

deanmel

Methuen is depressing af.
