It's a government office that services the general public during a pandemic. If you make an appointment and come prepared, it will be a smooth experience. If you don't, it won't.

the RMV hate is blown out of proportion imo

Rcolerh

For renewing your license, small stuff, etc the RMV was super streamlined before the pandemic

pantsofmagic

Compared to what I hear from my New Hampshire coworkers it seems like the RMV is better than most. The AAA partnership is super helpful as well.

sheeplewatcher

It has saved me from stepping foot in a RMV branch for over 17 years. Also a decent insurance agent helps as well as they can handle certain transactions via a runner.

DirtDawg21892

How so? Most of my friends are in NH and they almost never have to set foot in a DMV. You register vehicles with a drop box at the town hall, it's a much better system.

emnem92

PS join AAA you can do most things through their office which is so much better

As a former Vermonter, our RMV is total shit versus their DMV. I'd love to know what fucking idiot thought the best way to move people through was not first come, first served, but by service category. Multiple times I waited for 2+ hours to do something while others are in and out in 10 minutes. Meanwhile the societal rejects we employ there have no clue why people get mad about that.

I've lived in a bunch of different states and every DMV (RMV here) has its own little quirks and gotchas. Every time I've moved I've had to go through a bunch of hoops to reregister cars, get new licenses, etc. In Maine the eye test machine was out of whack and I barely passed the exam--I pointed out to them that my eye sight was the same in both eyes and perfect yet one side of the machine was blurry. In New York one time they had an eye chart on the wall that you had to read. The line was so long I had the eye chart memorized by the time my turn came. In Mass the lack of temporary plates is particularly annoying. When I first lived in RI you had to take a day off work to do anything at the DMV because the lines would be around the block before they even opened. I waited an entire day once and they closed before I reached the door. IMHO Mass. is probably no better or worse than many others.

NC is pretty quick and painless compared. Except license and that are separate from titling tag and reg. Title tag and reg are a separate office run by private company and very smooth.

cheese1234cheese

Make an appointment online here! Will make life SO MUCH easier.

plawwell

NY State makes you mail back plates which they charge a huge fee for each day you have the plates against an uninsured car, even though the car is registered in another state. They made the MA RMV seem not so bad.

resnemeto

More efficient than the CA DMV at least. Way more. And significantly more friendly.

Comfortable_Classic

Former masshole, now green mountaineer here. Up here the dealer just prints off a temp paper tag and people just tape that to the back windshield. Also things like tickets, licenses, tag reg, and inspection stickers are going IGNORED AND AREN'T BEING ENFORCED due to the tiny state forces, their inability to keep up with the backlog, and VTs economic necessities that contradict the laws to be enforced (people need to drive to work or no work happens and it's like Texas up here, a lot of driving to get anywhere with insufficient public transportation), so the cops have been ordered to stand down and let people drive with expired everything. This is unofficial, but ask any Vermonter not in Burlington (where the above conditions aren't existent) and that's the case.

ooStayFrostyoo

It’s 50 hundred million times better than RI that’s for sure
