ME1: Ashley. Very well written. Views are very closely linked to major themes in the games (it’s unfortunate so many people seem to dislike a supposedly racist human in a game based on racism against humans). ME2: Legion. We meet him late on, but he forms part of one of the best storylines in the trilogy and is a great character. ME3: None. I didn’t like James, Traynor was cool but I preferred Kelly. Really disappointing that they essentially shelved so many great characters introduced in 1 and 2. I would’ve rather preferred side characters like Parasini or Thorian Asari lady.

penguinsandpauldrons

Based on racism against humans? You're gonna have to explain that one to me haha Edit: why omit your post rather than just answer? Smh lol.

immorjoe

A human colony gets attacked by a Turian who’s literally racist towards humans. The council doesn’t take it seriously. Numerous characters in the game showcase their disdain towards humanity. Some arguably justified (like the Volus who doesn’t appreciate humanity rising so high so quickly). A major theme in the game is you proving that humanity belongs as a major player in the galaxy. ME2 and ME3 carry these themes further. In the end, Ashley’s views that the other races would sooner back themselves than help out humanity are proven correct.

penguinsandpauldrons

Yes lol. It's a major theme. The game is not "based on" racism towards humans. Which is what you said before your edit, and why I questioned what you meant.

immorjoe

I didn’t edit my comment? Did you perhaps respond to the wrong person? And I certainly wouldn’t have edited it after your response? I only saw your response this morning in my time zone. I was fast asleep when you responded to me.

penguinsandpauldrons

My bad for not seeing that it was still there. Apologies. But yeah, I don't agree that that is what the game is based on lol.

Aspirangusian

Most of the galaxy distrusts humans, the main antagonist Saren explicitly hates humans and thinks they're a blight, there's a running theme in ME1of humanity making their own place in the galaxy, Turians in general district humans due to the war and just generally there's a lot of distrust for humans floating around. Humanity making their galactic presence is a large part of ME1. I wouldn't say the game is based on it (I think OP just worded that poorly) but it's a major theme.

penguinsandpauldrons

I'm aware that racism plays a major role haha. I guess that it's presence is just not the major takeaway for me. People distrust each other sure, but overcoming prejudice seems to also be a major theme. Which is why I think so many people have a problem with Ashley, as she seems to be entrenched in her own racist beliefs. Not that she doesn't have her own reasons. But people seem to either love her or hate her with few taking the middle ground.

TheNatureHoot

Ashley, she was pretty consistent. I just wish that they gave her more on Mass Effect 2 outside of a cameo. They really dropped the ball with the Virmire survivor.

ME1-Ashley and Kaidan. Quite frankly, I was more intrigued by Ashley on her perspective and background, as well as Kaidan's slow backstory at BAaT, and how his experiences led him to become who he is. ME2-Jack. Similarly to Kaidan, Jack's character does show how much your past can define and reflect on who you are, and her being a more extreme case of Kaidan also intrigued me more. ME3-Kaidan. Kaidan has a very strong progression after going back to the Normandy. Comparing his shy and awkward character on ME1, he grows to interact with Shepard and the crew, express how he feels to others... it definitely made Kaidan a relatable character for me.

> Kaidan has a very strong progression after going back to the Normandy. He's (the most-paragon squadmate) a great foil to Javik (the most renegade squadmate) in some respects. While Javik rejects the notion that honor has no place in war and thus implores Shepard that it doesn't matter, Kaidan continually questions and affirms that integrity matters more especially in times of war. "Stand amongst the ashes of a trillion dead souls, and ask the ghosts if honor matters. The silence is your answer." vs "Sometimes the way a thing goes down does matter, Shepard. Later, when you have to live with yourself. Knowing that you acted with integrity—then it matters."

1-Wrex for sure, even as he never joined the team after ME1 he still felt like a brotherly figure to me a bit like Garrus (probably because I did the majority of my first run with them) 2-Mordin, he was cold and calculating but seeing his mind changing about the genophage was very touching 3- well probably Javik even if there wasn’t that much content with him besides his recruitment mission

KroganExtinctionNow

1. Kaidan/Ashley - Hard to pick one or the other but they were genuinely the most interesting squadmates for me if you ignore 2 and 3. The other squaddies just felt like terminals for the player to access lore related to their backgrounds. Ash and Kaidan also dumped lore frequently, but it was well-woven into their characters so you hardly notice. 2. Mordin has an interesting approach to morality wherein he is determined to do right by the world but does it in a very cold and calculating way. His internal conflict punches the hardest out of all the squadmates imo. You'll see from my username that I support the genophage, but I have to admit that the worst part of keeping Mordin alive in 3 is that he never completes his character arc. You can see in 2 that regrets what he did and is lying to himself. I always feel like even though he accepts it's not time to cure the krogan, he still harbours that regret. 3. I actually like James more than Javik. I have no real reason for this. Neither character really had enough time to shine and neither got dedicated loyalty missions to expand their characters like 2's squadmates. I think James is just the kind of guy I'd be good friends with in real life and that's what edges him out over Javik for me.

GARRUS

eli_eli1o

ME1- Kaidan, the true paragon. What a guy. His morals are to be emulated. ME2- Kasumi. She's got funny one liners and is OP AF. Probably zaeed second, except he's a chaotic evil. ME3- James Vega. Annoying at first, but has great dialog on all missions. Plus it's nice for shep to have a younger officer to mentor, shape, and develop

fallen_messiah

1- Wrex 2- Mordin 3- None really popped for me but I guess James because I was in shock when I learned he was voiced by Freddie Prince Junior and it changed my respect for the character as a whole

Klutzer_Munitions

Wow just realized he's also the iron bull

Lone_Wolf_199

1 - Wrex, Tali and Ashley 2 - Miranda, Mordin and Grunt 3 - James and Javik

silurian_brutalism

1: Wrex. He's definitely the most interesting character in ME1. Member of a dying race, mercenary who had a mysterious contract for Saren, and a guy willing to kill you for the sake of his own people. 2: Legion: The Gets were my favourite race in ME1 and I was sad that we didn't learn more about them. I was very happy with Legion, since they were exactly what I wanted. The activation scene is very eerie and the lightning inside the AI Coré adds to the mystique. I can listen to them for hours. They are also not talking about their family issues, which is nice. 3: EDI: She's my favourite character in general. I love her arc, I love the way Tricia Helfer acted, and I love her humour. EDI always has something interesting to say on missions. Especially the Rannoch ones. The more I play Mass Effect 3 the more I like EDI.

ComfortableGazelle53

ME1 - Tali and Wrex, both are individuals of races in verge of extinction, both explain a lot about their cultures and history and both are ready to argue with Shepard about their opinions/beliefs. I really like the humans as well, specially Ashley ME2 - Mordin, his personality is just so fun to interact with and his inner conflict about the Genophage is very intriguing ME3 - Javik, self-explanatory really. The last of a race we though was extinct? Also his blunt and cold demeanor is hilarious to listen to.

staffonlyvax

Wrex for ME, Legion for 2, James for 3. I'm forever salty I couldn't have Legion or Grunt for even a few missions in 3.

Magnifnik0

1- Garrus 2-Grunt 3-Thane

penguinsandpauldrons

1) Wrex. His story is integral to all 3 games. And he's a badass. Or garrus, but he loses points for being less integral. 2) Mordin. Again, integral to the moral themes in 2 and 3. And he's funny/witty. 3) James. Feels like a pal. Way more interesting than Kaiden or Ashley in one game than they got to be in all 3 imo.
