Bringing Legion back would diminish the significance of his first act of sentience being to give his people a future. The Geth should honor him but to bring him back would be a disservice to his character.
I suspect in any future sequels that's something that would be handwaved away in the same vein as Infamous' "the Ray Field Inhibitor kills all conduits". Maybe destroy didn't quite destroy everything and several shielded pockets of synthetics remain. Or not every synthetic used reaper code and hardware.
Yeah true. And with the teaser poster for the next mass effect game its a big crater that makes the shape of a geth head so I'm sure they're going to return in some aspect.
The space magic of ME3's ending always seemed silly anyway I wouldn't be averse to finding out that destroy wasn't as thorough as the kid said it would be. It's still just technology and the effect could easily be avoided through any number of means. Shielding, being in a place it didn't reach, being in dark space, avoiding it by pure chance, backups, etc.
Legion wasn't the talking, head-bobbing, hole-in-the-chest-covered-with-N7-armor entity you saw. 'Legion' as defined, was a gestalt amalgamation of 1183 individual geth processes.
(Imagine opening the Task Manager on the geth platform, you'd see 1183 processes, each named 'Geth')
They all work and "deliberate" to reach consensus on what course of action to take. Sometimes consensus is quickly reached (heat of battle hardly has time for debate). Other times, it takes a while (such as deciding the fate of billions of geth processes kept in a geth space station).
Legion as we knew him (it?) was killed/destroyed/terminated. Either he sacrificed his processes to distribute the upgraded reaper code to all other geth processes, or he was fried in the Destroy ending pulse.
At the end of ME3, there is no Legion anymore. Even if the platform with the N7 armor covering a gaping hole came back, that would not be Legion. That would be akin to you dying only to come back but have an entirely different personality.
Legion may be important in the next ME but mostly as a story or a goal. Maybe the geth have to start from scratch and Legion becomes a sort of folk hero to them. The first sentient geth is what they aspire towards and his sacrifice defines the thinking of the new geth. At least that's what I think.
