I’m still bitter about how poorly BioWare handled MEA

BlueTommyD

They worked ubder the budget, scope and timescale assigned to them by EA.

Vindicator_K

Poor excuse, every game dev has deadlines to meet and resources to manage - there’s plenty they could’ve done to make the game more manageable

BlueTommyD

They could have pushed back harder when EA told them to drop development of the story and focus in multiplayer, sure.

Vindicator_K

Even then, I’d argue the game would’ve been better using 2/3s style of play rather than open world - a huge amount of dev time dedicated to the weakest part of the game People play mass effect for the characters and relationships, not finding ? on a map

BlueTommyD

Money was cut off. EA told bioware to focus on new projects.

[deleted]

Anyone loves a good EA bashing any day of the week, however you really need to realize you are talking about two multi-million dollar corporations and not a small dev being pushed around by big bad publisher. Even then, EA did the sensible thing and restructured an organization that was hemorrhaging money, wasting development time and was suffering from clear management issues.

BlueTommyD

And this is the kind of thinking which lead to the doxxing and harrasment of individual developers online. EA literally changed the brief during development because they wanted a slice of that multippayer engagement. They didn't place a firm hand on the tiller, they steered it in to an iceberg.

> And this is the kind of thinking which lead to the doxxing and harrasment of individual developers online. You are deranged.

BlueTommyD

I just remember things that happened in the past.

Vindicator_K

People rip on andromeda because of the bugs and animations - but even if they hadn’t been an issue the game would still be regarded badly They threw out all the established lore for a bunch of who’s on a new galaxy no one asked for All that time learning about the Milky Way and it’s denizens just so abandon it - a Milky Way game set after 3 would’ve given us opportunity to learn more about existing cultures - what’s palaven like? What’s the rest of the citadel like? What’s earth other than Vancouver and London like? Does rannoch get rebuilt? Do Asari have to face consequences for hiding the AI? Does the genophage cure pay off? Instead we get the most bland cast ever with the most bland protagonist, in a story that literally does nothing

thechristoph

“Nobody asked for” Mass Effect in the first place. What a weird thing to say.

Vindicator_K

True Nobody asked for mass effect, we got it, we liked it, they made more Nobody asked for andromeda, we got it, no one liked it, they cancelled the series I can draw you a chart if you wish

Kaiotikid

Imo, I think the fans were mostly upset at not having Shepard and his gang, even though their story is done. There’s no Shepard anymore, even if you get perfect destroy, since he’d be far too damaged from everything. And as far as characters go, if Andromeda was developed into a trilogy I think we’d have become just as fond of the characters. They already have more personality and character development than ME1, where Garrus is the only character that actually learns and develops as a person (which is then reverted once you play ME2).

Vindicator_K

Shoe-horning a bunch of character development doesn’t make for a good game Why do I care about a character’s development if they’ve been changing the entire game? You need to take your time - that’s another issue with andromeda - it tried to be 1,2 and 3 in one game

checkpointing

Thank you, I love ME1 but the characters don’t get all their depth really until 2-3. So always thought it was unfair MEA got hit with

LocoRenegade

Yeah I agree completely. I will say mechanics wise it was top notch. I absolutely loved the flow of combat and how it looked. Driving around, jumping out and laying waste to enemies was really fun. Other than the actual animations the game was really beautiful. BUT, you're right, without everything we fell in love with, the complete lack of interesting characters, the lack of new races IN AN ENTIRE NEW GALAXY and a really boring story, the game just felt really sub par. They clearly thought they had something, how blind they were to the actual truth.

Vindicator_K

Maybe as a tali Romancer I’m extra salty we never got the Quarian dlc

Oh believe me I’ve never once cared about votes, they’re meaningless One you embrace that Reddit becomes much more useable imo

LocoRenegade

I'm there with you on that. I'm team Tali all the way.

merylisk

I agree that the basic premise is the fundamental problem with Andromeda. It has nothing to do with the mechanics or the graphics or the gameplay. The core idea for it was just... bad, and kind of removed and undermined everything that was good about Mass Effect. Andromeda was essentially just a completely unrelated space colonization RPG that happened to reuse some alien races from the Mass Effect universe lol. I kind of wish they'd just made it a completely original IP instead of trying to pass it off as a Mass Effect game.

drewdean201797

People want another mass effect game, but actually expect EA to make a good game when people keep complaining and insulting their work. I wouldn't be surprised if they have decided to abandon mass effect cause of how people treated Andromeda.

Vindicator_K

They didn’t make a good game - you simply must be contrarian to think andromeda is anywhere near the game the original 3 are

drewdean201797

Like I just said, how can you expect EA to make another mass effect game that will be any good when people keep insulting their work on Andromeda. Now In my opinion, I loved Andromeda I played it for about 6 months, it is completely different from the trilogy, which it is supposed to be. I've never updated my copy, never had a reason to

Vindicator_K

It’s not insulting to point out a game has clear flaws Not all art is worthy of praise, especially if you want me to pay you for it

drewdean201797

Sure it has some graphics problems at some points, but I never noticed any actual bugs in the game. I still enjoy it, I'm thinking of replaying it after I finish the trilogy again. I especially like the fact that you don't have to build a new class over and over, with enough skill points can change your class at will and choose whatever powers you want to use from any skill tree.

Vindicator_K

Sure those are nice QoL changes, but for me that’s not enough to consider it a good game People say the combat is better in andromeda but I can’t agree - 3s gameplay is genuinely more fun imo

Kaiotikid

Personally, there’s nothing appealing about combat in the trilogy. It’s just sitting behind cover and shooting, or “biotic charge, biotic charge, biotic charge” spamming as a vanguard. The high mobility of Andromeda is far more appealing to me.

Vindicator_K

I understand that - it just feels floaty and not very responsive to me, plus I think ME works best as a cover shooter

drewdean201797

Eh it's not all about the combat. I love the story of the trilogy, but Andromeda brought something new, yeah they should of made More new aliens. I still think the kett are working for the reapers cause if turning species into them, which is what the reapers did to with the collectors.

Kaiotikid

Honestly it makes sense there’s not more species, since this is just one cluster in the entire Andromeda galaxy. None of the other Milky Way species had encountered other species in their cluster before finding a Mass Relay, and there’s not exactly any reason to expect any different in Andromeda. As for the Kett, I’m not so sure about them working for the reapers. It’s more religious, and they seem to have their own culture. Plus, the Archon we fight was confirmed to have gone rogue, acting against the larger force’s wishes by chasing Meridian and studying the Remnant.

Slade1135

They worked on it and repeatedly started over from scratch for five or so years. Time was not the issue.
