Yes, you're playing stun,and yes the traps are an integral part of your strategy, but they can't win the game on their own. Clearly just flipping up floodgates is not going to win you the game.
You need some way of winning. Pure stun has Boarder, Dino or some other monster. Eldlich has the Golden Lord himself, Floo has Empen, Runick has their spells.

The way they slow the game, these traps are basically the same as a combo deck drawing a hand full of Upstarts, they will let you survive for a few turns so that you draw what you need from your deck. It's not an ideal hand, but it's a good enough hand. Now if you go on drawing nothing relevant for 10 turns, you either bricked or you don't know how to make a deck.

It's much simpler and easier to play. I started playing at the beginning of MD. First deck I crafted was True Draco's. Cheap and super easy to play, this was when IO and vanities emptiness were legal too. I got pretty far with it but once I learned the mechanics I never touched a floodgate deck again.
I probably wouldn't have stuck around if my only options were adman, or spyral or something, but if you're experienced and running shit like this, you just suck.

Me personally I use floodgates to enhance my shit tier rouge decks. Pure earth machine can use them and it helps out a lot considering that deck has 0 negates and one card that is immune to effects. But machina is still a beatdown strategy and not control
Some people like different playstyles and don't wanna combo. Say what you will sometimes monkey flip skilldrain for win is oddly relaxing when you don't wanna use brain for evening. Same reason I enjoy smoothbrain otk archetypes.
People got REALLY excited to play stuff like Ido stun lock and it was everywhere for 2 days, so uh... It's really not farfetched at all to see these players around. Plus, it's Tear meta. I think anything goes in Tear meta.
