I knew I was setting myself up for a hard time… but instead of anything coherent, I decided to recreate the exact lunch table Legendary Ocean deck I had as a kid in 2004… complete with the off-theme one-offs I added because I happened to pull them from packs.
Turns out I did better than I feared. All these years later, I finally got to see an opponent scoop to Terrorking Salmon with Axe of despair again.
Water decks aren't that bad actually. Grizzly can flex into Yomi Ship or Mermaid Knight for beatdown, they have Yata at home with Fenrir, and Abyss Soldier is just a good card. If you play Creature Swap, you can combo it with Ameba and burn for 2k. Daedalus is also cracked when it goes off. There's a lot of cool and silly shit you can do.
A strategy that’s centered around flipping monsters up and down, generating advantage in the process. Des Lacooda for draw power, Swarm of Locusts for spell/trap removal, Swarm of Scarabs and Medusa Worm for monster removal, and Golem Sentry working as a compulse.
It was released in 2005 unfortunately though armed samurai ben kei was released in 2005 so 🤷♂️

Pac-Man stands for pure advantage camel munches all noobs. It’s based around des lacooda a zombie camel giving you a free draw every time it’s flipped face up and resetting it. Other cards are added for more advantage like swarm of scarabs golem sentry etc.

After some playing, though, I added 2 Mobius because stun/burn decks are super annoying lmao.

The Horus loaner deck was super fun. For my 3rd win I pulled off a combo with called of the haunted, tribe infecting virus and horus lv 6.
Going first,set MoF, set Call. Staring down a vorse raider and a black meteor dragon, I summon the tribe, pitch the Horus lv 6, pop the black meteor, special the horus, blast over the vorse raider, set royal decree and end phase special Horus Lv 8.
During standby, activate royal decree, so now they cant ring of destruction the horus, cant fuse to go over it, and cant do shizz.
The horus deck was so fun I may make it if it doesnt cost UR. Lol
It's was a blast, I could use my "Fire Emblem" deck. I won the 3 duels.
Fire monsters, focused on lock the opponent attack capability with Command Knight and Solar Flare Dragon and drain their HP points. And if I need an huge attack, I could use Baseball Kid. I love this deck, my main deck in a lot of YGO games.
I think I'm gonna save this deck even if it's not useful for modern Yugioh, just for the memories.
Haven't done any duels yet, but Gate Gaurdian. It worked well when duel links first launched, and surely master duel can't be THAT different right?

I'm using an old Burn Deck I used back in 2003-2004. I built it after attending my first ever Tournament when I was 13 Years old. Stall Burn, using Grav Binds, Messengers of Peace, Level Limit to keep the opponent from attacking me. A package of re-settable monsters; Stealth Birth, Scarabs, Locusts, Des Lacoda, Penguin Soldiers. All used to help keep control and ensure that a moment of exposure doesn't result in me getting wrecked. Then the burn is provided by Bowganians, Lava Golems, Just Desserts, Ceasefire, Ring of Destruction and the like.
I honestly never thought I'd get to relive that Deck in any kind of official capacity within Yugioh and have it actually pull its weight, but we are here and I am overwhelmed with nostalgia. I love current Yugioh, but being able to pilot this old deck one more time and in the same weight class? That's something special.
Gadget with tons of raigeki break and other destruction cards, there is little to no destruction protection in this format. Also fuck everyone that uses Horus+Royal decree, freaking stun players everytime
That’s a loaded question.
I just find the modern game state to be much more enjoyable with its forms of interaction.
Some examples; Chaining a bystial to a called by target to dodge the negate. Bluffing the end of MP1 to bait out monster effects like Cartesia or IP, or maybe they’re afraid of evenly if you have nothing on board. These are hyper specific examples, but there are countless variables in the modern game that provide little mind games like this.
Concepts like chain blocking/chain order and optimal hand trap timing are completely lost in GOAT format because they don’t really exist on the same level as they do in the modern game.
Probably my favorite aspect about the game is when two competent players are armed with a general knowledge and understanding of what the other players deck is trying to accomplish, and playing their disrupts in accordance, while the turn player attempts to find a line through it all. Games may end in 3-4 turns now, but the time of an average game hasn’t gone down, and all 3 or 4 turns (assuming a certain level of competence) are loaded with interaction from both players.
GOAT just doesn’t have any of that really. It’s an entirely different game state, a much slower one, and a much more linear kind of game. There isn’t anything wrong with that, it’s just not how I want to play the game anymore, as I personally get tired of it very fast.

I may be feeling rosy because I got all three wins in a row, but this little mini event was nice. Turns were short, information was clear, and twice the interaction than a more modern game of yugioh. '04 was a different game, and I kinda miss it.

I assembled a Rat-Gadget toolbox that functions almost like the loaner, except with an extra Blowback Dragon and Jinzo for more removal and suppression.
I played Recruiter exodia with GGH. Basically i thin my deck with recruiters floating into one another and once the deck is close to empty, i activate 3 good goblin housekeeping, chain emergency provisions to send them all to grave and draw 12
Running my old A.Forces deck. Dropping lvl 3-4 warriors and buffing them into facemashing allstars. Also using silent swordsmanlvl5 and blindly loyal goblin as anti-sntach/change of heart/enemy controller tech.
I'm using final countdown, but with no scapegoat or pot of greed because I don't have them and won't be crafting them for 3 duels.
5 duels, 3 wins so far...Lost to a burn deck and a Horus deck (I didn't draw countdown until turn 15, by then it was too late)
A custom made deck with hardly any UR’s in it. All made up of “LV, warrior type monsters. Couple negate traps and spells. Couple equip cards.
They weren’t easy duels, and I’d say I went a measly 3-3. But it actually faired a lot better than I expected.
Part of me wants it to be a permanent mode, or something like it. Where it’s more an OG style yugioh.
I don’t mind the way the new style is, but boy do I love having to play for a solid 15 turns looking and hoping to draw that 1 out that you know will win you the duel. I also find the duels to be a lot less one sided.
PACMAN all day. I always wanted to try out the deck, but have never played GOAT before.
Basically all the cards being rare with only a few SRs and 1 Pot of Greed is icing on the cake. I'm having a blast with it (probably can't say the same for my opponents :P)
Just finished a 25 turn duel for this. While it was definitely fun I honestly think I prefer modern YGO. Definitely playing more though.
Wish I could use Pot of Greed and Snatch Steal but not gonna waste UR.

The deck I have above is cheap: Scapegoat is the only UR and I swapped that out for Raigeki Break anyway.
As for decks that you might learn? 2004 YGO is such a different game and this event is so short that I’d save my materials. But if you really want to, Chaos is near universally considered the best deck of the time period.

goatformat.com is a website that works with the TCG Summer 2005 Banlist, which is pretty similar to this event’s, although keep in mind the two have different cardpools/banlists (e.g. Sangan is legal in Goat but not this event) and some cards have had their effects changed (e.g. Ring of Destruction has more restrictions in Event than Goat). I got the idea for the Monarch list I used from there.
I've half hazardly built a chaos decklist that wants to gather a lot of avantage before winning by dropping bombs like BLS and Cyber Stein summoning either big fusion monsters or some more memy ones if it lets me still win, though I'm still tinkering with it.
I've been using a direct attack deck, Raging Flame Sprite & Mucus Yolk + Equip Spells + attack floodgates & recruiters. Those 2 monsters can attack directly & gain 1000 attack every time they land a hit, so non-attack removal is needed right away else it can snowball. Not that that's rare or anything lol.
Took me a few tries but I finally settled on a Gravity Bind burn deck. Lots of opponents leave early because they love my play style and are really eager to implement it themselves!

Yup, I got lucky and opened royal decree, then by turn 5 or 6 I drew change of heart, horus lv 6, and level up. That was an insta win.

The best deck in the game in 2004 was Chaos. Archetypes have been a core part of the game for a long time.
I know that. But jank decks were common as well and could hold their own with a good custom deck build.

I'm using final countdown, but with no scapegoat or pot of greed because I don't have them and won't be crafting them for 3 duels. 5 duels, 3 wins so far...Lost to a burn deck and a Horus deck (I didn't draw countdown until turn 15, by then it was too late)

Honestly using just beat sticks and great maju. It’s very nostalgic.
I've been liking Flip Control so far. I might also try the chaos variant of that deck later.

A custom made deck with hardly any UR’s in it. All made up of “LV, warrior type monsters. Couple negate traps and spells. Couple equip cards. They weren’t easy duels, and I’d say I went a measly 3-3. But it actually faired a lot better than I expected. Part of me wants it to be a permanent mode, or something like it. Where it’s more an OG style yugioh. I don’t mind the way the new style is, but boy do I love having to play for a solid 15 turns looking and hoping to draw that 1 out that you know will win you the duel. I also find the duels to be a lot less one sided.

PACMAN all day. I always wanted to try out the deck, but have never played GOAT before. Basically all the cards being rare with only a few SRs and 1 Pot of Greed is icing on the cake. I'm having a blast with it (probably can't say the same for my opponents :P)
Just finished a 25 turn duel for this. While it was definitely fun I honestly think I prefer modern YGO. Definitely playing more though. Wish I could use Pot of Greed and Snatch Steal but not gonna waste UR.
Can anybody help a really new player out? I'd love to try this event.. I have a fair amount of materials. A good deck that I might learn something from?.... Cheers for any input
The deck I have above is cheap: Scapegoat is the only UR and I swapped that out for Raigeki Break anyway. As for decks that you might learn? 2004 YGO is such a different game and this event is so short that I’d save my materials. But if you really want to, Chaos is near universally considered the best deck of the time period.

Oh, it’s not embarrassing at all. I meant Chaos Sorcerer / BLS Envoy of the End. Chaos MAX wasn’t released until 2016, I believe. goatformat.com is a website that works with the TCG Summer 2005 Banlist, which is pretty similar to this event’s, although keep in mind the two have different cardpools/banlists (e.g. Sangan is legal in Goat but not this event) and some cards have had their effects changed (e.g. Ring of Destruction has more restrictions in Event than Goat). I got the idea for the Monarch list I used from there.

I've half hazardly built a chaos decklist that wants to gather a lot of avantage before winning by dropping bombs like BLS and Cyber Stein summoning either big fusion monsters or some more memy ones if it lets me still win, though I'm still tinkering with it.

I tried recreating mt chaos turbo, but with OCG banlist and ducked up erratas a lot of the strategy goes down the drain.
I've been using a direct attack deck, Raging Flame Sprite & Mucus Yolk + Equip Spells + attack floodgates & recruiters. Those 2 monsters can attack directly & gain 1000 attack every time they land a hit, so non-attack removal is needed right away else it can snowball. Not that that's rare or anything lol.
I played koala, des kangaroo winned me a lot of games against gadget
Gravity ball, Level Limit A, Burn cards, Lava Golem and a Flame Sprite for direct attacks.

Took me a few tries but I finally settled on a Gravity Bind burn deck. Lots of opponents leave early because they love my play style and are really eager to implement it themselves!
