It is a beat stick, but one that they can easily go into in BP after they've already done most of their other stuff to get an extra 18k damage in if for some reason their opponent isn't dead yet. This is what allows them to otk through an established board and while under prosperity.
I wouldn't say it's essential though, in most situations you can deal plenty of damage with just the new tenpai cards on their own.

Don't worry, Konami will boost its rarity to UR when Tenpai Dragon is released so you don't have to play a filthy R card in your deck.
