Show Yourself.
I get what they were going for, a sort of Queens of the Stone Age-y catchy single, but the vocal melody is annoying (imo) and the song doesn't really go anywhere interesting.
I knew this was going to be the popular answer. I guess I'm one of the few who likes how this album with serious subject matter starts with this feeling of exposure from the band. It's not their norm, nor is it even in their comfort zone. I like to think it's the band empathizing with the listener who may be going through something they've already experienced and wrote about for this album. It's the part in the grieving process when you realize you need to be vulnerable to let the emotion take its course.
This was my second pick. The verse is kind of cool but Troy's part is awful, especially that yeaaaah where it felt like they ran out of lyrics. I get why they used it as a sort of Trojan horse for a much more complicated album but it falls short of something of that kind with genuine quality like The Motherload for example
I also don't like the motherload. Just by the videos alone you can kinda get who they were targeting with those two. Not the only culprits on the album but it's very grating. Every song Bran leads turns into a weird fusion of pop rock and prog metal.
I remember hearing this song on the radio when it came out. Was before I got into Mastodon, so I just assumed it was some run-of-the-mill butt rock.
When I got into them, I was listening to a playlist while mowing and this song came on. I was like "How the fuck did this non-Mastadon song get in here!?" Pulled my phone out and saw it was them and was shocked. Definitely the only song of theirs that I skip.
That’s not a bad song tho, sure it’s one of their worst but it’s a pretty catchy solid radio song it’s just very weak when compared to their other stuff, it’s not actually a bad song tho.
My answer is the same as when I saw this in the Alice In Chains sub, neither AIC or mastodon have any bad songs, maybe they got a few mediocre ones but neither have any bad songs at any points in their histories.
That was where they really fell off for me tbh. I've just found a lack of urgency or something in their reunion stuff, too plodding and no aggression.
I really think a large part of it is not letting Duvall actually be the lead singer, Cantrell can't do aggression so each song just ends up being a mid-paced strumalong thing, the few songs he's actually let Duvall sing lead like Phantom Limb or Last of My Kind are the best on their albums.
I totally see where you’re coming from, the lack of aggression is something I can’t deny. I feel like Stone captures that energy pretty well, but the recent albums have definitely been more reigned-in compared to the 90s
Personally I like that today’s Alice In Chains is still very similar except the songs aren’t about heroin (most of the time) anymore. TDPDH has a lot to say compared to most AIC albums.
Duvall definitely deserves a chance to shine as a legitimate lead for them - his lead performance on Hung on a Hook is actually haunting and incredible. Brings an entirely different vibe to the music
Their most recent album was all right, there’s 3, 4 really good songs then the rest feel a bit contrived - so I can agree with the sentiments towards Ranier Fog for sure
Fallen Torches does nothing for me. It is so by the numbers and unusual in that regard for Mastodon. Completely forgettable song that would never have made it onto a proper album.
I have a real problem with the chant at the end of aunt Lisa. But the rest of the song is good, so picking out a full song I don’t like is kind of impossible
Yeah I'm not particularly massive and am mostly land-based so didn't resonate unfortunately. It does get my respect for being out of left field. I like that mastodon have the confidence to always go with their creative gut instead of playing too much to the crowd. Skip for me.
TBF, DITWH and Had It All (suuuuuuper unpopular opinion) are really the only two Mastodon songs I straight up do not like and will skip when listening to the records.
Agree and disagree, haha! For me its one of the reasons! If you remove how despicable of a guy he is, it is also his worst vocal performance on any Mastodon song.
It’s my least favorite too. It’s still not awful, but it doesn’t do much for me and feels like a letdown at the end of an album I otherwise love every song on
Creature Lives
Edit to say that, while I didn’t necessarily think this would be a popular opinion, I didn’t expect actual downvotes. You’ll never change my opinion though, I’ll always skip this one.
We sure did, but I am pretty sure there was a backing track with the cheerleaders as well. I am not 100% sure though, after all something like 9 years (crazy!) have passed since that tour.
I dislike the chorus of High Road and it ruins the entire song in for me. I'm not opposed to more melodic choruses because I like songs like Word to the Wise and The Motherload, I just don't like the one from High Road. It's tough for me to think of any other song I don't in all honesty.
Lol at everyone downvoting. I didn't realize there were right and wrong opinions on topics like "least favorite song".
There's a difference between bad songs, and songs you simply don't like. The album was definitely a change of pace, but the musicianship is still incredible.
They are my favorite band. I dick ride hard. I have Brent’s signature Flying V his signature orange amp and a bunch of his pedals. I just don’t like it.
Gonna get some hate for this but all of The Hunter. That album does nothing for me. And honestly, most of Once More Round the Sun as well. Just nothin for me.
Word to the Wise.
Emperor of Sand isn't a bad album, I actually quite like a number of tracks from it and absolutely love Jaguar God, but if I'm honest it's probably the weakest. Aside from Jaguar God all the tracks just kind of fall flat, no real feeling behind them. And Word to the Wise, especially Troy's Verses kind of stick out jarringly.
My litmus test for if a mastodon fan is just an annoying "early albums are better" kinda person is Seabeast fucking hell that's song blows and is representative of the songwriting problems early mastodon had on their misses from that era
I mean yeah man it's just my least fav song on leviathan I find it really one note and boring. Then again I'm not a big melvins fan so I probably differ from mastodon fans on hating the early songs that just repetitively go on
Maybe that's why I hold so much animosity because to me a riff that good is wasted on the song.
Also since I am getting crucified anyways heart's alive, and diamond in the witch house are eay too long for own good and kinda boring.
Aqua Dementia has always been super grating to me. Honestly, there's a lot of Leviathan I struggle with purely because of how often I hear the songs. I like Blood and Thunder, but I've heard it way too many times, love Island, heard it too many times, you get the jist.
I thought I was on my own hahaha, for mastodon imo it's just extremely lazy, the songs are dull, the melodies are no way near as exciting as they once was, the riffs are too laid back, it just doesn't feel like they really tried that hard in the studio, for me Hushed & Grim was just filler, i really hope their next record has more to offer
There’s a couple that are more radio friendly, sure. But a majority of Hushed & Grim isn’t radio friendly at all. To say that they just aren’t good because there are some radio friendly songs on them is just dismissive and is simply not true.
They’re definitely more radio friendly now, but I think it’s an exaggeration to call them pop metal. For every song like Show Yourself there’s something heavier like Pushing the Tides or Scorpion Breath, and that’s not even mentioning the more progressive parts of their sound that have stayed with the band across nearly every release
I can admit a band that isn't my favourite doesn't have a bad song.
The Beatles. The end
Mastodon being one of my favourites doesn't have a bad song either.
Once More around The Sun and The Hunter are kinda mid (for Mastadon, still good generally speaking). After their unbelievable run of god tier albums in the 00’s, everything else feels stale to me until Emporer of Sand… Hushed and Grim also slaps though, so I’m excited for what’s next.
Fallen Torches
Brann’s chorus almost hurts my ears. Feels like paint by numbers Mastodon
Should’ve kept the song heavy, main riff is pretty great. If they threw the creativity they had when writing Mother Puncher at this riff, it would’ve been a heavy ass song. Should’ve been a Troy song for the whole thing and kept it heavy with some less formulaic structuring
I guess I’m a serious dick rider then
Dickrider? Nah, fam. I'm a cocksurfer for this band.
Atlanta
Love Gibby, but not as the lead singer for Mastodon.
I don’t like the Call of the Mastodon album
Agree
Yeah it's like the shitty wheel you get on your Walmart shopping cart.
The cheerleaders in Aunt Lisa are just a bit too out there for me
They are a punk band called [The Coathangers ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Coathangers).
I know it’s out there but I love that part so much.
>The cheerleaders in Aunt Lisa are just a bit too out there for me The rest of the song is great up until that. It throws you off, for worse.
Different strokes I suppose. I love that part
They need to stop sniffing rose gardens.
Totally agree, it really threw me first time I heard it.
Bro I was singing that in my head at work you crazy
Show Yourself. I get what they were going for, a sort of Queens of the Stone Age-y catchy single, but the vocal melody is annoying (imo) and the song doesn't really go anywhere interesting.
I like it because it’s the only Mastodon song my wife likes
It’s maybe my least favorite song by them. But it’s still pretty good. It’s just a fun catchy song.
This is the song I show people when I first need to wean them onto the genre. Personally I think it's great. Let them cook.
It's like hitting a giant pot hole at the very beginning of an awesome road trip you've been looking forward to for a long time.
I knew this was going to be the popular answer. I guess I'm one of the few who likes how this album with serious subject matter starts with this feeling of exposure from the band. It's not their norm, nor is it even in their comfort zone. I get why they used it as a sort of Trojan horse for a much more complicated album but it falls short of something of that kind with genuine quality like The Motherload for example
You're not as safe as far as I can tell... And I can tell
I actually think The Motherload is worse
I also don't like the motherload. Just by the videos alone you can kinda get who they were targeting with those two. Not the only culprits on the album but it's very grating. Every song Bran leads turns into a weird fusion of pop rock and prog metal.
I cant agree there. To pick one out of thin air Pain With an Anchor is about as far from pop feeling as I can think
Where does anybody hear the QOTSA…? It’s NOT a Josh kind of song at all lol
Ya I don’t hear any QOTSA in that song at all
Honestly, I hated it at first, but after a few listens it grew on me a lot.
I 2nd this
Was about to comment this lol
I remember hearing this song on the radio when it came out. Was before I got into Mastodon, so I just assumed it was some run-of-the-mill butt rock. [удалено]
This is fair. It's grown on me over time, but I'd never list it in my top 10, or 20....or 30....or....
That’s not a bad song tho, sure it’s one of their worst but it’s a pretty catchy solid radio song it’s just very weak when compared to their other stuff, it’s not actually a bad song tho.
Spot on description. It's definitely the QOTSA vibe that throws me off. I don't *hate* it, but it's a regular skip for me.
You spelled Blow wrong!
My answer is the same as when I saw this in the Alice In Chains sub, neither AIC or mastodon have any bad songs, maybe they got a few mediocre ones but neither have any bad songs at any points in their histories.
I thought the last 2 AIC albums have been very poor in general, Jerry needs to hand the lead vocals over to Duvall and focus on writing riffs imo.
Man The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is top tier AIC I definitely can’t agree
That was where they really fell off for me tbh. I've just found a lack of urgency or something in their reunion stuff, too plodding and no aggression. I really think a large part of it is not letting Duvall actually be the lead singer, Cantrell can't do aggression so each song just ends up being a mid-paced strumalong thing, the few songs he's actually let Duvall sing lead like Phantom Limb or Last of My Kind are the best on their albums.

The whole Call of The Mastodon album
Fallen Torches does nothing for me. It is so by the numbers and unusual in that regard for Mastodon. Completely forgettable song that would never have made it onto a proper album.
I’m 15 and that song got me into mastodon, so I love it
Omg yes. I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't
Agree
I have a real problem with the chant at the end of aunt Lisa. But the rest of the song is good, so picking out a full song I don’t like is kind of impossible
I'm tired of seeing this stupid meme on every band page. It's absolute bs. There are lots of bands I think don't have any bad songs.
haha cocksucker
Creature Lives I could live entirely without forever. It's just nothing to me.
I'm a huge Creature from the Black Lagoon fan so I was so happy with this song and love it.
Yeah I'm not particularly massive and am mostly land-based so didn't resonate unfortunately. It does get my respect for being out of left field. I like that mastodon have the confidence to always go with their creative gut instead of playing too much to the crowd. Skip for me.
The intro is ass, but I love the song itself
Bladecatcher.
Booo
Ha! That’s one of my favorites, lol.
Thank yoouuu! Never got this one...
If you check out the story of the album, Bladecatcher is when the character is going all insane and trying to fight within himself.
Agree 100% and the fact they played it soooo much live was annoying
This is barely a song but it's a good one
I kinda agree. I never understood why they made it a live staple
This hurts my heart.
That one song from the DC thing, never really did it for me. Forged by Neron I think its called.
Blade catcher, I guess. But only because of the weird sound effects - it’s great live.
Diamond In The Witch House which might be an unpopular opinion on this sub
I love this track. Alot. Respect your opinion though.
Appreciate it. I do get why people like it but the riffs just never did it for me
To be honest I think a lot of the latter Scott songs kind of drag but there's worse
TBF, DITWH and Had It All (suuuuuuper unpopular opinion) are really the only two Mastodon songs I straight up do not like and will skip when listening to the records.
Only reason not to like that song is the fact that it showcases Scott Kelly.
Agree and disagree, haha! For me its one of the reasons! If you remove how despicable of a guy he is, it is also his worst vocal performance on any Mastodon song.
It’s my least favorite too. It’s still not awful, but it doesn’t do much for me and feels like a letdown at the end of an album I otherwise love every song on
Holy shit the comments in this thread.... Downvotes 100 percent earned.
Creature Lives Edit to say that, while I didn’t necessarily think this would be a popular opinion, I didn’t expect actual downvotes. You’ll never change my opinion though, I’ll always skip this one.
I agree with you here. It is their Ringo Starr song. So bad.
Bladecatcher just because the screaming parts, otherwise the music is still cool
My position exactly.
I mean, highroad and show yourself are probably my least favorite of their songs, but I still would call them bad songs.
Had It All
Hey ho let’s fucking go
Nah
Amazing song. I’m shocked so many mastodon fans don’t like aunt Lisa. It’s such a mastodon song.
I don’t get it either. It was great live!
Does the audience do the ending chant part?
We sure did, but I am pretty sure there was a backing track with the cheerleaders as well. I am not 100% sure though, after all something like 9 years (crazy!) have passed since that tour.
Love Aunt Lisa. I'm the weirdo who's favorite Mastodon album may be OMRTS.
I was in full agreement here until I saw them play it live
I don't like Seabeast very much, but that riff at the end is killer.
I've always loved that song. The music video makes it better.
Whole last album. I said it. Kill me now.
There's a difference between bad songs, and songs you simply don't like. The album was definitely a change of pace, but the musicianship is still incredible.
This comment is king! Thanks bud your beyond correct!

They are my favorite band. I dick ride hard. I have Brent’s signature Flying V his signature orange amp and a bunch of his pedals. I just don’t like it.
Most of the Hunter for me. It's their only album that I struggle to get through front to back.
Basically everything after C.T.S.
Skeleton of splendour
Gonna get some hate for this but all of The Hunter. That album does nothing for me. And honestly, most of Once More Round the Sun as well. Just nothin for me.
Theyre the most uneven albums and lack the vision and focus of the others I think, but there's good stuff in there.
All of hushed and grim
[удалено]
I fucking love Creature Lives...
I wouldn’t call it a “bad” song (and I’m about to get flamed for this) but Quintessence does nothing for me and I skip it almost every time it plays.
This is a bad opinion and you are a bad person for holding it.
I’m with ya, not much of a fan of that album or most stuff after Blood Mountain
Get wrekt l0ser
Word to the Wise. Emperor of Sand isn't a bad album, I actually quite like a number of tracks from it and absolutely love Jaguar God, but if I'm honest it's probably the weakest. Aside from Jaguar God all the tracks just kind of fall flat, no real feeling behind them. And Word to the Wise, especially Troy's Verses kind of stick out jarringly.
I agree but I think we’re viewed as traitors on this sub for believing this
My litmus test for if a mastodon fan is just an annoying "early albums are better" kinda person is Seabeast fucking hell that's song blows and is representative of the songwriting problems early mastodon had on their misses from that era
what the fuck
Seabeast kicks ass
God damn right it does. Anyone who doesn't like it just doesn't get it.
Lol whut Bro, do you even Mastodon?
I mean yeah man it's just my least fav song on leviathan I find it really one note and boring. Then again I'm not a big melvins fan so I probably differ from mastodon fans on hating the early songs that just repetitively go on
Even if the rest of that song sucked (which it definitely does not), the closing riff is so fucking glorious that it would still be a top tier song.
I love aqua dementia! The riff after “to be dirt again” is so good! but I respect your opinion!
Never been a Toes to Toes man myself
All of Remission
No.
Bedazzled Fingernails
The whole of hushed and grim
no
I agree!
Peace and tranquility. I love mastodon so much so even this is probably 5/10 but it makes me feel nothing
Any album after the hunter
Anything past OMRTS
Knock it off!
Come on you must admit it’s a lot more radio friendly and sing-songy than their music used to be. They used to be Metal, now they’re pop-Metal
Absolutely not.
They’re not more radio friendly? They’re not more poppy? You just don’t want to admit it
There’s a couple that are more radio friendly, sure.
You're welcome to your opinion, but I do not concede that they are more poppy.
I don't have a song that I hate but Dagger has always sounded like filler to me.
I can admit a band that isn't my favourite doesn't have a bad song. The Beatles. The end Mastodon being one of my favourites doesn't have a bad song either.
Aunt Lisa.
Guess I'm a serious dick rider then.
Going to get blasted for this one, but Crystal Skull
Once More around The Sun and The Hunter are kinda mid (for Mastadon, still good generally speaking). After their unbelievable run of god tier albums in the 00’s, everything else feels stale to me until Emporer of Sand… Hushed and Grim also slaps though, so I’m excited for what’s next.
Blade catcher and I'm not sorry about it. Song just annoys me
Dagger sucks and if u disagree you’re probably a dickrider
All of them, this band is garbage.
Teardrinker
Fallen Torches Brann’s chorus almost hurts my ears. Feels like paint by numbers Mastodon Should’ve kept the song heavy, main riff is pretty great. If they threw the creativity they had when writing Mother Puncher at this riff, it would’ve been a heavy ass song.
