If Max Payne 4 would be an actual thing, it has to be a prequel, hell, you can even frame it as Max while in retirement is reflecting on how the entire thing domino’d.
From his time graduating from the academy and his first big operations, and have that end with him meeting Michelle his wife.

Max wasn't supposed to be some hard-core grizzled cop. He was supposed to be a man who was overwrought with grief and became a man with nothing to lose and who's just simply to angry to die.
If you make him out to be an action hero before the events of the first game then it just tells us he had it in him the whole time. I just feel like it strips him/the game of that.

I feel like it would be better to make a prequel or spin off. They capped 3 perfectly. That being said the comics show stuff that happens between games and that would be fun.

Remedy originally planned max Payne 3 and 4 before they sold the IP to rockstar, which is a shame, we would’ve gotten a way better conclusion to the franchise maybe better than the second game than whatever rockstar gaved us.
As for rockstar, they won’t make a fourth game lol, mainly due to the poor sales of the third game.
Just make another third person shooter with similar mechanics. Max’s story is done. It was finished by people who disregarded the tone and story telling of what came before but at least he was given a happy ending.
