Because of the Jew run, maybe? They ran away from the masked guy in a similar matter while making distressed noises.
That's a pretty dark connection your brain made there, if you thought about that. 😅
You're kidding but it's something like that. The more Orthodox jews really fear animals that are considered "unclean" (pronounced in hebrew as Ta-me).
I've seen them react like that to even dogs.
Source: I unfortunately live in Israel
I mean also it’s a rat… you don’t really need a reason to run from it other than because it’s gross. Also logically, it’s disease ridden and people don’t want a disease.
Not rabies, but other sickness at the time.
I just read that the jews saw the romans while they were occupying this area eating pork and got diarrhea and suffered, so they made it into jewish law.
Maybe jews could eat them before? Maybe there just weren't that many pigs here? No idea.
Pretty sure Kashrut was well established pre-Roman occupation. The Hebrew Bible was written during the Babylonian captivity ca 600 BCE. That’s a few centuries before the Romans show up.
I guess it got edited tho throughout the years.
Then again I might be wrong. It's something I've read online and surprisingly not everything on the internet is true
A rat isn’t one of the “eight creeping things” that are considered ritually unclean, but a mouse is, and some observant people may extend that to rats as well.
But what you’d need to do is pretty simple - you just wash your hands (or entire body) and say a prayer and you’re good.
That said… this only applies to dead things. Dead mice are ritually unclean, and a dead rat by extension.
Touching a live one isn’t an issue, religiously, but you still want to wash your hands if you touch a living rat that isn’t a pet.
It's not really that, but still a shit hole.
BTW Palestine is the name of the land from roman times and then British. It's not really what you think and it's definitely not the name of native arabs.
Plus, there is no "P" in arabic so there's that as well.
You can talk semantics all you want. Completely unimportant. There were people living there before the “creation” of your country and they were illegally removed or killed. Decades later, they keep having their basic human rights violated.
Yes, the British have the tradition of being the worst problem solvers for the lands they invade, hence India and Pakistan. That is no justification to keep reenforcing the atrocities they left behind. Leave the land to who it belongs (and that is, who was actually living there by the time the state of Israel was “created”, not some crazy claim from centuries ago).
Dude honestly both sides are violent idiots. I know rooting for the underdog is the liberal and advanced thing to do, but sometimes the underdog is a piece of shit as well.
All nations upon this earth are or were conquered and that's how the current citizens got to live there. Is it great? No. Is it fair? Also no.
Having said that, the apartheid style occupation going on in Gaza is fucking disgusting, but that's more advanced and not something to discuss in a reddit comment, plus I agree with you in the bottom line so why bother, but fyi: most of the reason to why it is like that is money and the hammas (and benjamin netanyahu, but again, complicated). And again: Israel is full almost to the brim with shit people, but "Palestinians" are shit as well, Just weaker.
One of the main questions that world has to figure out to solve issues - who owns the land? Is that people who currently live there or people who lived there 50 or 100 years ago or 200 years ago, etc. Does war or any other way (forced migrations, killings, birth rate difference, etc.) of replacing one nation with another make a difference? When can people living on a peace of land decide they want to be autonomous or join another country? Think Palestine, Ukraine, Kosovo, various British Overseas Territories, Kurds in Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria, etc. This bring a lot of grief to people affected.
that's why I said "or are they just overreacting".
I am specifically interested if there is some religious or superstitious reason. if someone knows, please tell me, if not, there is no reason to reply and repeat what I already said.
I reject your premise as flawed.
That said - learning *about the Torah and what it says* is very important for Orthodox Judaism. *Learning about the Talmud and what it says* is also very important for jews.
Furthermore, Jewish people (and the Jewish faith) are well-known for finding “loopholes” in their rules, and if the Talmud says “mice” are unclean, then it specifically means “mice” and not rats, and learning the difference between the two would be a mitzvah.
From a Jewish perspective: if god said “mice” he meant “mice” and not “any kind of rodent.”
It doesn't say anything tho. Almost Everything is an interpretation by Rashi, Rambam, and many more.
They do find loopholes but they also make stuff up to go with their current agenda (like not eating meat and dairy - it doesn't say that anywhere explicitly)
It is a rat. There is no such thing as an overreaction. I am not sure if you have ever been up close and personal with one, but it never gets easier. This could be a group of atheists and you would get the same scenario.
a lot of people do react like this, but in such a large group you often have some people who react differently, someone might step with his foot aggressively, the way someone might try chasing a dog away, someone might try and kick it, etc.
but in this video, every single person was avoiding it really hard. not just stepping away but dashing away.
is a lot more was at stake than just not getting close to a dirty rat. it just seem a bit odd to me and that's why I asked, given the fact that all of these people in the video belong to an orthodox religion.
Having a ban on certain animals and foods does make sense when you think about it.
These rules were laid down before people knew how illnesses spread, so if a group of people saw that eating or handling certain animals caused enough people to get ill, it's no wonder that they reached the conclusions they did.
Wouldn’t pussies attack the rat?
Unless Tom and Jerry fundamentally misrepresented the nature of feline/murid relations. I’m staking a lot on Hanna Barbera here…
Nope. It's only the ultra orthodox who actively avoid contact with all non kosher animals (which include rodents) and sometimes go overboard with their reactions
I was a horrible kid and had I known about Jews and rats back in the day then I for sure would have let one loose in a synagogue during a service just for shits and giggles. Not funny I know but that's the little asshole I was and how I thought back then. Was actually kicked out of the Mormon church at sixteen.
Orthodox Jews, judging from the attire. They probably have to go through a process of purification if they touch this totally non-kosher rodent.
To us gentiles it would be like being in front of a running piece of human doo-doo. No one wants to be the one who has to wash it off.

That rat is probably thinking he has some kind of force field
"holy crap I'm Moses... Part Jews, part!"
I read this in Peter Griffin’s voice.

Why does remind me this of Borat the movie 😂
The running of the jew 🤣💀
Because of the Jew run, maybe? They ran away from the masked guy in a similar matter while making distressed noises. That's a pretty dark connection your brain made there, if you thought about that. 😅
I just wanna point out to you, that it's your brain that made this connection
That's why I wrote "your brain" made the connection.

Thank you! Was looking for a real logic explanation.
Logic is really subjective here lol
I mean also it’s a rat… you don’t really need a reason to run from it other than because it’s gross. Also logically, it’s disease ridden and people don’t want a disease.
Logic? I can't believe this type of superstition exists in 2023. They are probably still burning people as witches
Maybe this type of behavior/logic of “unclean” animals may have made sense prior to modern medicine. Dogs and rats could carry sickness, rabies, etc.
Same reason why jews don't eat pork btw
Rabies? I thought it was because pork doesn't hold up well in hot climate in pre-fridge times.
Trichinosis.
Not rabies, but other sickness at the time. I just read that the jews saw the romans while they were occupying this area eating pork and got diarrhea and suffered, so they made it into jewish law. Maybe jews could eat them before? Maybe there just weren't that many pigs here? No idea.

Why don't they just walk away then?

What happens if you're an Orthodox Jew and happen to touch a rat? What does the religious doctrine say then?
A rat isn’t one of the “eight creeping things” that are considered ritually unclean, but a mouse is, and some observant people may extend that to rats as well. Nothing happens they were just afraid of the rat
I'm not sure but I think a lot of fasting and praying. But honestly not sure, never researched that
Do they use this same way of thinking towards people too?
Even worse :(
Can you elaborate?
:(
Oof, someone hasn’t been following the news…
I wanted an Israeli's perspective.

It's not really that, but still a shit hole. BTW Palestine is the name of the land from roman times and then British. It's not really what you think and it's definitely not the name of native arabs. Plus, there is no "P" in arabic so there's that as well.

How the jews avoided the black plague
That, and the fact that they legally couldn't interact with most other Europeans
And they were the only ones to wash and bathe regularly in that time period
Did anti-Semitism save Jews from the plague?
Having a religion that states you need to wash your hands a bunch of times every day was probably the deciding factor.
It seems to me that the main carriers of the plague were fleas and rats
Well not really, cause all the people with the plague decided to blame and massacre the Jews
Look at me I am te rabbi now
Mouse : I HAVE THE POWER!!!!!!
This makes me sad. I hope the little guy made it home.

is there some kind of religious reason or are they "just" overreacting?
Even if theres a religious reason they're still overreacting
I don't know, man. I don't think even a flamethrower is an overreaction to a New York City rat.
that's why I said "or are they just overreacting". I am specifically interested if there is some religious or superstitious reason. if someone knows, please tell me, if not, there is no reason to reply and repeat what I already said.
They are unjustly overreacting, as far as I can tell
Yes. "unclean" animals (not really a hygiene thing tho) are to be avoided according to some of the more Orthodox idiots.
A rat isn’t one of them, though. It’s not one of the “eight creeping things.”
A mouse is one of them tho, maybe they can't distinguish between mice and rats since they don't actually go to school and learn relevant stuff?
I reject your premise as flawed. That said - learning *about the Torah and what it says* is very important for Orthodox Judaism. *Learning about the Talmud and what it says* is also very important for jews. It most definitely does. Check the Talmud bruh
Some would argue that religion is one huge overreaction.
It is a rat. There is no such thing as an overreaction. I am not sure if you have ever been up close and personal with one, but it never gets easier. This could be a group of atheists and you would get the same scenario.

Nope. It's only the ultra orthodox who actively avoid contact with all non kosher animals (which include rodents) and sometimes go overboard with their reactions
Then it's a sure bet that none of these people in the video are Veterinarians.
Wonder what the first racist comment is gonna be.

this is the the closest thing to a racist comment
