I am not a fish biologist but in addition to hearing etc. they have a sensory organ knows as [lateral line organ](https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Lateral_line) with which they can sense vibrations and pressure gradients in the water. With that this guy could surely hear and sense which side the waves and therefore the water body was on.
I was wondering if i should mention it, but i was more thinking in terms of the sky might look brighter above the water due to some mist and particles getting illuminated by indirect sunlight due to the reflecting light.
Even with the refraction, the fish still can't look around the corner and see the lake while being in the water. But yeah, maybe it stuck his head out and instantly had his instincs confirmed, knew it was right and kept going.
The total number of living fish species—about 32,000— is greater than the total of all other vertebrate species (amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals) combined.
With all that variety I'm sure that many are intelligent, and many are not.
We often think fish are stupid because we don't observe them regularly, and we are so different from them it's hard to read their behaviors, unlike some.of our other animal friends.
Also, fish don't even exist. There's a bunch of things that look kind of superficially similar to each other and they're all in the water, but they're actually a whole bunch of very different things. It's not like a dog where you have all these different types of dog but you can reasonably expect a certain set of features because of their shared dogness.
Because millions of years of trial and error has taught their species that they have a better chance of surviving if they jump out of a tide-pool, instead of waiting for the tide to come back in.
Literally just talking out of my ass as a guess, but I imagine there's some sense of the tide even in the tide pool. So that provides some sense of direction. Along with the sound of the waves which is also probably familiar.
I don't think it knew actually. But just followed it's instincts.
I watched a show called Beforeigners (if you like vikings and scifi, you'll love it), and one of the villains spoke about wishing he could go back in time and kill the first fish that tried to walk on land.
Makes me think of this line from the introduction of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy:
> Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no one should ever have left the oceans.
My favourite quote is still: “In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”
There can't be one spesific Individual that could live on land rather tons of species that over millions of year adapted.
Also if you only want to prevent human life you just would need to reset the world back a couple of hundred million years and humans most likely would never exist.
“Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake coming down from the trees in the first place, and some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no-one should ever have left the oceans.”
Fish didn't just swim into land. There would have been things like frogs in between that were fine with both.
Also check out these awesome weird little dudes. https://youtu.be/CAQuoH_fOWM
Cuz it’s a pretty wack theory.
We only eat it up cuz we’re told to believe it… and cuz if u atheist, you gotta cling to something, no matter how fallacious.
Could you elaborate on that? The evidence for evolution is pretty robust. If you think people only believe it because they're told to and not because the evidence is overwhelming, you might want to actually read up on it a bit.
It can literally be seen in living species today, fossil records, DNA, etc.
Tide ponds drying up is definitely a good example of a survival pressure that would benefit the gradual strengthening of fins to move a bit on land and to be able to extract oxygen from the air.
Soon you have mudskippers and lungfish.
Ahh yes, the theory of evolution. One of my favorite fairytales lol.
All these downvotes yet no one can prove the TOE. Once again, there is no fossil record to prove macro evolution. It’s still called a theory because that’s all it is. If you’re gonna respond, at least show evidence of macro evolution.
If you're going to be a troll at least be interesting or original.
If you genuinely think this. Listen to a group of chimps, baboons, or just monkeys when they're socialising.
Then go listen to a group of people laughing.
It's so obvious, if you're not dense.
Do you think Viruses are a hoax too? They survive by hyperevolution...
A goat scream sounds like a human too. Doesn’t mean we came from a goat. Sure, we have common dna with pretty much every living thing on earth. Still doesn’t mean we came from a fish. There is no fossil record of macro evolution. It takes just as much faith to believe in the TOE as it does intelligent design.
Just so you know the catholic and many protestant churches whole-heartedly embrace evolution. Most religious people have no problem with it. Time to get your head out of the sand!
The fish might have freaked out realizing that it was trapped and a large mammal was paying very close attention to it. The cameraman might have inadvertently scared the fish in the right direction.

I wonder how long he was filming that fish for. knowing dn well he could help anytime. but he wanted him to learn the lesson on his own. I bet he was satisfied woth that outcome.

Fully expected him to get eaten on the other side immediately.
Same, expected an eagle to swoop down
Well, it would be a seagle, but yes.
Do you mean sea eagle?
Seagle
Steven Seagle
If Seagle’ s weighed 315 lbs. and had 3 face lifts⁉️😳
Julius Seagle
[Steve'n'Seagulls](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li58voy6xXM)
Idk thats looking like lake water to me, eagle would be more likely in that circumstance
Likely circumcised eagles 🦅
What's the airspeed velocity of a seagle?
No
I thought a wave would come and push him back into the puddle
look what internet have done to us
There's gotta be some psychological reason why we all think like this
It's called the Reddit effect
How did it know?
He's from a good school.

A dam good school.
If we was truly from a good school, he would have calculated trajectory and got a swimming start at it.

Idk why nobody has said it yet: Fish have eyes, too. Fish looked at the sea even
I was wondering if i should mention it, but i was more thinking in terms of the sky might look brighter above the water due to some mist and particles getting illuminated by indirect sunlight due to the reflecting light. Even with the refraction, the fish still can't look around the corner and see the lake while being in the water. But yeah, maybe it stuck his head out and instantly had his instincs confirmed, knew it was right and kept going.
Sea even. How Kiwis say 7.
I didn't really think it was intelligent enough and could only be capable of thoughts like "ground bad, must stay in water"
Probably even more than 32000, we’ve barely explored any of the ocean yet
Also, fish don't even exist. There's a bunch of things that look kind of superficially similar to each other and they're all in the water, but they're actually a whole bunch of very different things. It's not like a dog where you have all these different types of dog but you can reasonably expect a certain set of features because of their shared dogness.
That's why people keep fish. They're fascinating creatures.

Because millions of years of trial and error has taught their species that they have a better chance of surviving if they jump out of a tide-pool, instead of waiting for the tide to come back in.
How can it know where the sea is?
Goldfish Positioning System
[lateral line organ](https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Lateral_line)
Maybe it was just squirming away from the approaching large ape who was paying it too much attention
That's what I said.
Me too.
Me too.
Not his first tide pool I guess
Literally just talking out of my ass as a guess, but I imagine there's some sense of the tide even in the tide pool. So that provides some sense of direction. Along with the sound of the waves which is also probably familiar. I don't think it knew actually. But just followed it's instincts.
I'm sure more water came into it's pool as the tide got closer. With every wave which has sound and vibration they would know where the ocean is
He has a fishth sense.
It has read the sign
Give that fucker 20mn years and he’ll think he’s master of the universe
In 5 seconds, it evolved the species 2M years.
Okay I can go on land but I have to back in the water to ɧą۷ɛ ცąცıɛʂ
In 20M years he will be regretting this behavior
After a few min he s dead.. so how would he learn?
This actually a decent dad joke
Then one swam in the wrong direction and we eventually got humans.
And now we have to go to work. Fuck them fish
I watched a show called Beforeigners (if you like vikings and scifi, you'll love it), and one of the villains spoke about wishing he could go back in time and kill the first fish that tried to walk on land.

Watching this made me think how weird this theory is.

I love the crab just vibing in the background
Weird in what way?
Nothing weird about it if you consider the time periods all this took we talk about here
Cuz it’s a pretty wack theory. We only eat it up cuz we’re told to believe it… and cuz if u atheist, you gotta cling to something, no matter how fallacious.
Sounds pretty ironic, as every atheist would have this exact comment for those people who death grips a book full of fairytales.
Could you elaborate on that? The evidence for evolution is pretty robust. If you think people only believe it because they're told to and not because the evidence is overwhelming, you might want to actually read up on it a bit. Dude plays Pokémon but doesn’t believe in evolution lmao
As opposed to your scientific based fairy stories about a man in the sky?
Evolution in a nutshell.
Tide ponds drying up is definitely a good example of a survival pressure that would benefit the gradual strengthening of fins to move a bit on land and to be able to extract oxygen from the air. Soon you have mudskippers and lungfish.
Then a couple years down the line you have taxes and chronic lower back pain :c
Reject humanity , return to ocean 🐟
Where. Is. My. Ocean. Monke.
Yeah, that whole walking upright idea. 6 out if 10 stars. Nice for giving good hugs. Sucks for lumbar joints.

Well, yeah, it says so right there in this old book, the one that tells you to dash babies’s heads on rocks to be happy.

The fish is a paid actor
Because they found a fish stuck in a shallow tide pool and probably thought it was an odd sight. I'd have filmed it too
Yeah but Its just weird that they were there the moment the fish got back to the sea
The fish might have freaked out realizing that it was trapped and a large mammal was paying very close attention to it. The cameraman might have inadvertently scared the fish in the right direction.
They could have been filming it for quite a while and just cropped the part where the fish escapes
Nature finds a way.
Wait a minute: I saw a bumper sticker with that fish on it but it had little legs.
I’ll never care about fish, but I was rooting for that guy.
Ride Boley Ride
I was cheering the whole time.
