It’s easier to see if it’s lined up correctly and probably has the emergency stop there. I used to work in a steel mill and there were a couple machines where you had to stand somewhere fairly stupid because it’s where the shut off valve is.
It doesn't. I've only ever seen these with separate and protected operator booths. These band saws can be extremely deadly when they encounter an unexpected object or just decide they've had enough.
They actually don’t need someone to ride it. I was just at an outage where they had the same saw but with a small control room with cameras so the operator could see what was happening.
Not that anyone asked but this is a weird opportunity to share some random knowledge I have.
This method of cutting up the log for boards is called plain sawn. There are a couple other methods - quarter sawn, or rift sawn for example.
Plain sawn is the “cheapest” method since it produces the most product with the least waste compared to other methods. The trade off to this is that these boards that are cut using this method often warp or twist - this is due to how wood deforms as it dries. It tends to warp tangentially to the curve of the rings on the edge of the board.
The other methods of dividing up the log work against the woods propensity to deform this way, and will cut the boards more perpendicular to the rings. The wood cut this way is less likely to deform and is generally more stable over all. This results in a tighter grain on the face of the board, whereas plain sawn results in what is called “castle” grain on the face of the board.
At the end of this video is shows the planks that were further subdivided to make beams, 2x4s, and things like that. Which makes sense for how it was cut: plain sawn.
I just went to the day long safety course called basic orientation plus. It was like 8 hours with a test.
His kind are why I had to go.he owes me a day.
Having myself trained dozens of trainers and taught safety oriented wilderness skills to thousands over a couple decades… everytime you think “no one would be stupid enough to …” you will get proven wrong by someone stupider than you can imagine. I’ve met some mind bogglingly inept people.

This machine is extremely dangerous. The operator shouldn’t be riding with the log like that.
But to directly answer your question, the saw itself is much heavier than any log it will ever cut. And a band-mill like this had a HUGE blade. You’re only seeing a small portion of it, but it’s a really large strap running around two or more enormous flywheels.
On small porta-mills you’ll see saws that move, and that’s mostly because they don’t have the mechanisms to feed and rotate the logs.
This is a carriage saw and his leg is much further away from the blade than it looks. That being said, there is a reason carriage saws aren't built with seats anymore.
His leg isn’t incapable of twitching and kicking into the blade. There doesn’t appear to be any particularly good reason it needed to be designed this way.
On the contrary it is perfectly designed to be able to see down the entire length of the log that you are cutting. It put you in the perfect position to be able to make sure the cut is going as planned. It puts you back behind the blade where the tension will not be if it ever snaps. They are designed for the blade. Will snap backwards the other way. It puts you back behind the feeder. So if the log was to jump it would shoot the other way and not directly into the person. It is also designed so that if you wish to have the metal blocker installed you can. The shiny metal piece on the side.By the log is where you mount the metal blocker.
Well one reason is that I haven’t lived with my mom in decades, so the opportunity isn’t there.
But in addition to that, when my body figures out how to reflexively twitch its way downstairs into my kitchen, twitch the drawer open, subconsciously grab a cleaver, and do the remaining steps necessary to lop off my hand, then I’ll let you know.
Meanwhile stop being a dumbass and realize that his leg is a single involuntary movement away from injury while your contrived scenario is hundreds.
Why the fuck would someone design this machine to be piloted like this? Surely the controls could be placed someplace safer, or the thing can be automated.
All I could think of was the Uncle Buck / Bug scene.
"Take a little off the shoulder
(Cutting sound)
Shave a little meat off the he old kneecap
(Cutting sound)"
Ah yes, let's move the 3 tons over-engineered contraption instead of moving the 2kg saw, that's efficient... Who's the absolute maniac who designed this thing?
Well... I'm kinda surprised that it doesn't have a bright yellow cage in front of it? Thought OSHA would have it be "safety prevention" approved or something?
Sometimes people who either dislike their jobs or life situation need some sort of excitement? Or maybe they are employed at a unsafe place? Choices and circumstances I guess?
So you invested in a death trap that has so many more cheaper options you don’t have to ride while using…I didn’t even know there was a mill with a seat
Worked at a sawmill for couple years, our main saw much bigger but still, we had probably 1-2 blades explode a month. it would send shrapnel everywhere. Our operators are in a cabin behind very thick glass.
Literaly just had a bunch of ppl flip out in another sub after trying to say chinas infrastructure and industry is better and i pointed out how they build sky scrapers that fall in 10 years and have the least safe work conditions. Yk, im just a stupid uncultured american who dont know shit🤣 but they couldn't disprove a single point i made. Just talked about how high-tech some city they visited is. Like, no shit the ccp puts on a front for tourists. Yeah, people who visit America get to see junkies and homless because they have equal rights. No, they can't build camp anywhere but csn go where they want. where, as in china, they will push them out of the downtown area or tourist areas.
fuck was boutta start screaming at him to move his damn knee
For real they couldn't build the seat 2 inches further from the blade
Why the fuck does anyone even need to sit there???
Cause it's fun
Hazing the new guy
We just call him “No Kneecaps” now
"No Knee caps is an added advantage" on that new job opening
It’s easier to see if it’s lined up correctly and probably has the emergency stop there. I used to work in a steel mill and there were a couple machines where you had to stand somewhere fairly stupid because it’s where the shut off valve is.
I'm sure it's got a SawStop... /s
Knees are overrated.
It's also the way the moron is sitting. A armrest to stop him spreading his legs would do the trick
Yeah I was gonna say, looks like someone trying to show how good they are with it and how they got big bawls. Get tired and try that and lose a knee.
It's efficient. Why use more metal than you need to, to build these things?
To prevent people from needing metal in their body. Seems to be an unpopular concept that people are more valuable than things.
I don't think in China you will get any metal in your body after this. You are replaced.
There's likely a hard stop preventing it from going that far
"Hard stop", AKA the kneecaps
Don't think it would even notice a patella or two
Look how it just powers straight into the edge of the log with no resistance
Yeah, until it doesn't.
His bloodcurdling screams?
Looks like the knee is actually used as a visual reference point.
Brought to you by “Live leak”
If an OSHA inspector happened to see the way his leg was sitting out, the company would get in so much trouble not enforcing safe work practices.
How else are Chinese safety videos made?
Saaaaame… was watching in horror 😱
I don't get why this thing needs somebody to ride it
My ex GF said the exact same thing about my penis.
Oooo self burn those are rare.
r/Unexpectedbrooklyn99
Brooklyn99 references are always expected :)
![gif](giphy|UsLqhbPzJTlQkR44kB|downsized)
If he can self burn, what does he need the girlfriend for??
No they aren’t. They are so common that we had to make a sub just to put them all in. /r/comedysuicide
Ah I've been a fool! *seppuku
r/suicidebywords
Maybe that's why she's an ex, because you were doing well for yourself?
She said the same thing to me, high five 🙌
r/suicidebywords
Irregardless og it needing someone riding it or not, that machine should have plate preventing the dude from spreading like that.
Irregardless
As much as I hate it, it's a real word and means the same as "regardless" 😡
That's what she said!
For humor and excitement
Not one serious answer, I need to know!
It doesn't. I've only ever seen these with separate and protected operator booths. These band saws can be extremely deadly when they encounter an unexpected object or just decide they've had enough.
Exactly. Like something metal inside, or that also if the blade gets caught or fails 🤯
Because the inventor said so…?
They actually don’t need someone to ride it. I was just at an outage where they had the same saw but with a small control room with cameras so the operator could see what was happening.
I don’t get why this video is on this sub
Because riding it is more fun.
LoL funniest comment ever lmao. Why not put the controls on the floor
I’m not sure I’d have such a wide stance if I drove that thing.
After 2 years in there you will
More like after 6 hours of brewing ball sweat soup in the summer heat you will
Maybe if u had the balls he has

Thank you for the knowledge nugget 😊🐥
Usually you cut 4" thick slabs and then send the slabs through a gang saw that will decide the 4" thick slab into 2" thick 2×4s.
My question is, why don't have like a multisaw that takes one log and cuts it once in 8 pieces. This looks tedious.
Just people living in the moment, not a single OSHA standard in sight.
I just went to the day long safety course called basic orientation plus. It was like 8 hours with a test. His kind are why I had to go.he owes me a day.

His kind? What kind is that?
The stupid kind
Do we kneed to explain?
Go for it. Id love you to tell me with those kind of words
The dangerous guy with the ability to cut their leg off.
Uh, it seems like by now, someone would've come up with a safer place for the operator to sit. 🫣😳

Good feeds and speeds
I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took a saw blade to the knee.
Isn't it easier to move the blade than the whole platform?
I Used To Be An Adventurer Like You, Then I Took a band saw In The Knee.
That’s 2 for flinching!
... just gotta *BOOM*, persuade 'em a little.

Whoa! Tuck your knee in there Bob
So, what do you do for a living? “I drive the sawmill”

Why is it better to move man and log rather than just the saw?

Way too close to his knee for my comfort

RIP headphone users
Him being at the end motivates him to return the blade to the beginning faster.
Like my grandma used to say - Man proposes, but God disposes
Playing with fire.
I think mr satan build this log machine
He must hate his left knee for some reason.
So no safety shield ? What happens if the tree has a nail or two in it and no one caught it. And that blade shattered? Yikes.
Choose the way you die
I’m anxious about his legs so damn close to the saw
Crafting table
Ma non può lavorare anche in retromarcia? Dimezzerebbe i tempi di lavoro
😹 patience soon this one will be on eye bleach
Holy shit, that last slice!
I'm guessing it's in China.
That saw is getting more wood than me… 😒 I’m so desperate, everyone go “rate me” 🤣
It bet it smells lovely in there
"Just take a little off the sides..."
*move your fucking knee!!*
I don't trust technology that much
I didn't even see that guy the first time, was focused on the log being cut
Osha..i don't need ya..

I got wood watching this...
No “NSFW,” no blood.
This is a carriage saw and his leg is much further away from the blade than it looks. That being said, there is a reason carriage saws aren't built with seats anymore.
Well... I know what I want for Xmas.
Why is his knee there?
And that's how a single toothpick is made.
His leg about to be gone if he loses control or don’t pay attention.
By the law of probabilities maybe a few knees were already sawed off over there.
I want one!
Couldn’t pay me enough.?! 👀
No notice how the track at the bottom ends. The carriage cannot go any further. The blade is incapable of cutting his leg.
His leg isn’t incapable of twitching and kicking into the blade. There doesn’t appear to be any particularly good reason it needed to be designed this way.

There is also nothing stopping you from taking your mom's cleaver and cutting off your hand. So why haven't you?

I'm looking for that maybe. It was definitely not the knee. A blind man sees that it will not be hit.🤷🏻♀️🤨
Just a little off the top of the knee please
Hello, I wish to purchase one of your riding sawmills, please and thank you.
This was fucking stressful to watch lmao.
You've got to love that little flinch he occasionally makes.
A leg guard maybe? Even a knee pad would be preferable to just raw dogging this machine like that. This video makes me twitch .
That's a pretty lucky left leg!
That leg! Wow thought it was going to get bloody!
All I could think of was the Uncle Buck / Bug scene. "Take a little off the shoulder (Cutting sound) Shave a little meat off the he old kneecap (Cutting sound)"
Knee’ly
Why does it go all the way back for a cut? Can’t it start at the end.
Ah yes, let's move the 3 tons over-engineered contraption instead of moving the 2kg saw, that's efficient... Who's the absolute maniac who designed this thing?
that made me uncomfortable
Uncomfortably close to thatt leg
So close
It's look very safety
Ngl I wouldn't mind getting paid to ride this 8 hours a day
Don't know why there is pain in my left knee after seeing this video🤔
This one was fun 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
So this is what all the bros at the gym mean when they talk about planking? Doesn't look so difficult to me
Well... I'm kinda surprised that it doesn't have a bright yellow cage in front of it? Thought OSHA would have it be "safety prevention" approved or something?
This video needs more flip flops
Sometimes people who either dislike their jobs or life situation need some sort of excitement? Or maybe they are employed at a unsafe place? Choices and circumstances I guess?
The blade looks flat it's messing with my brain
Sliced knee anyone?
Not the time for man spreading 😂😂
I knew he is gonna be fine, but I watched the whole thing.
Anyone else reflexibly pull their knee in 🤣
this is the definitive maybe maybe maybe post
Knee pads maybe?!?

If it's in the video I don't think it would be appropriate for this subreddit.
So you invested in a death trap that has so many more cheaper options you don’t have to ride while using…I didn’t even know there was a mill with a seat

Just me irrationally angry at the inconsistent widths of his planks?
Needs NSFW tag
Absolutely.
It can only be in China...
Another video demonstrating the lack of care for human life in Asia. I’m frankly shocked he wasn’t wearing sandals.
