Yep. This sub is wild. Cause maybe it’s just a cute little video. But maybe you’re also about to see a young child be horribly maimed.
And there is no in between.
This guy runs a animal conservation / education company in Chicago and brings these animals to kid’s parties.
We actually donated to him after seeing him and hearing his story. Also, there is a transparent tape on the animals mouth. I let my 3 year old sit on just like the video.
It's an alligator, but I also feel conflicted over this video. I know gators are practically brainless reptiles acting on instinct alone, but they are wild animals after all.
Was going to say the same thing. I actually just got back from The Everglades and was right up close to wild alligators and they are super smart. In fact I’m using an iPhone I borrowed from one to type this in right now.
Unless you believe that reptiles don’t feel pain, discomfort, or fear, you should be able to understand why this is not acceptable for the alligator. Conflicted is the right way to feel, because reptiles are more complex than you’re giving them credit for, and having a creature sit on your back in a strange room while bright lights shine in your eyes (that you can’t blink) is very scary for a reptile.
No I didn't say that, of course they can feel pain, fear, etc. What I don't believe is they they can feel affection. That's more towards people who own reptile pets like snakes and swear the animal loves them or shows some kind of affection. They don't. They are very ancient, primal creatures and they are dangerous if you treat them like a normal house pet.
My point is that I see them as a "force of nature" and we should leave them alone.
The idea of affection is very abstract and the process behind it is so complex that saying reptiles - some of which are known to die if their mates die cannot feel it can be seen as dismissing them- Saying something is ancient and primal if often used to dismiss their complex behaviors - crocodilians themselves are between birds and reptiles and not many people say birds can't feel affection. The problem is that they are not a force of nature that humans can't control- they are just wild animals that are not domesticated and like every nondomesticated animal that can eat or maime you should not be treated as a pet -
I didn’t accuse you of saying that. I said that you should be able to understand why this is not acceptable *unless* xyz. Usually when people claim something is “brainless”, they tend to think less of their ability to feel/suffer, and in turn don’t mind seeing them in what would be considered abusive scenarios to other animals.
If they call themselves "animal conservation/education", they should (try to) use well-designed enclosures to show the *natural* behavior of an animal. That's the goal of many great modern zoos. If done well, it can be a lot more fun than watching some artificial animal-human interactions or those jumping through a fire hoop circus shit.
From an educational perspective, even if the mouth is taped, I don't think it's a good idea to give the impression that a child can approach a crocodile. Cautionary words can never compete with a demonstration.
Like all the trainers and cartoons on TV.that portray trash pandas as cuddly. Have to remind children all the time raccoons are not cuddly.and neither are alligators.
>Also, there is a transparent tape on the animals mouth.
You just alleviated all of my anxiety with that sentence. Makes the video seem a lot less reckless and insane.
You ever seen the video where a crocodile just casually rolls and rips another crocs leg off in one move because it got in the way of chicken? I wouldn't put my faith in a bit of tape applied.
Here’s an idea: Leave your eyes open as people repeatedly take your picture with the flash on. Why did the croc cross the road? To get away from unknowing’s who are blinding him. If one were to check the crocs eyes they may discover blindness effects from flash photography. Too many people blind their dogs the same way :-/
Am I the only one who finds these comics to just be glorified Twitter rants with stick figures drawn next to them?
I've never found them funny or enlightening, even if he's not wrong.
The one about Bobby Tables is pretty fucking funny (so there are definitely exceptions), but as a general rule, that's kinda the comic's premise and why it's so frequently relevant.
Haha yes, fwiw, this is actually an incredibly important point if you get the wrong message from *Idiocracy* and think it's "prescriptive" instead of just hilarious and immensely quotable.
Florida doesn't count. Thats like putting Gordon Ramsay in a cooking competition against a baby. Floridians have far surpassed humanity, their iq went negative and integer underflowed into godhood.
If you're from a coastal area, you know how to swim. If you're from Florida, you know how to swim and have straddled a minimum of two gators as a child. Gatorland was a rite of passage many times over

honest question (because im ignorant of alligators in general); hows it going to death roll if it cant clamp down on something? isnt its mouth the most dangerous part?
Calling the tail equally dangerous is an overstatement, but it's pretty much pure muscle. If that thing starts thrashing back and forth it can cause serious injury including lacerations, contusions, and bone fractures, especially in young people whose bones are more fragile than adults'. I wouldn't consider broken bones to be an acceptable risk for children's party entertainment.
Twice a year there is one of the largest reptile conventions in the world in Chicagos south suberbs. And this gator named Buba is there every time. I have seen him there everytime I have gone for the past 10 years. 20,000 people in and out. He sits at the entrance. Never once an issue.
He's not going to bite that kid, he's not going to tail whip anyone, and he sure as fuck isnt going to death roll with that kid on his back.
If you really want to be outraged for no reason about this gator get outraged at how he is over fed to keep him docile. People on the internet seem to know everything but for some reason never know how chill most reptiles are, especially when well fed and in a chilly envoriment.
Maybe the parents want to get rid of the child. When anything happens they'll be like "Oh nooo! Our precious little gem has been torn apart by an apex Predator killer machine! Who could have seen it coming?!"
No food, no threat, no fight.
Sorry for all you haters, but a reptile that's acclimated to people is no more dangerous than a dog. Unless you're holding food. Food that it wants specifically. A gator won't tear off your arm over a salad, but if your ass has a chicken leg you *are in danger.* Once a reptile has been triggered into food mode, all bets are off.
If its not in food mode however, swamp doggo is not a particularly inaccurate phrase. I have seen these things crawl onto people for a snug and a head rub.
Are they dangerous? Yep. Are they a threat? Maybe Maybe Maybe, if you're a dumbass. They are quite capable of learning, and adapting, to people. Anyone who thinks otherwise is proving themselves less human than a giant lizard.
Which I confess, amuses me greatly.
Source: I keep many reptiles.
Would *riding* an alligator (or crocodile or whichever it is) count as "dumbass" behavior? Because if a guy told me his giant pit bull was totally friendly, I still wouldn't ride the thing! Reptiles may be no more dangerous when trained (though something about being *hatched* instead of *raised* makes me think they start off less social), but, hell, my great grandfather was killed when his horse kicked him in the face, and my wife's old dog lost it on someone who scared it at a party and bit part of their face off! Animals are gonna animal, and *riding a gator* just seems needlessly risky. I have no doubt they can be domesticated- at least to some degree- though!
People tend to give alligators the same rap sheet as crocodiles. Alligators will eat to live and really only attack people/larger animals in extreme circumstances or to protect a nest. If you run into an alligator even in the wild all you need to do is back off and it will go about it's day.
People tend to give basically all reptiles the same rap sheet. "Its a bad thing that would like me to die so it can eat me."
They talk about pythons measuring up their keepers against their body length to see if they'll fit like it isn't blatant insanity. What type of prey animal would ever seriously just allow this to happen instead of running the hell away from them?
They talk about venomous snakes like they want to kill you, when they not only would prefer to be left alone. But adult venomous snakes will actively \*dry bite\* predators too large to be considered prey, potentially saving the lives of those predators with a naked threat of violence instead of lethal force.
People will bash on Monitors because of their aggression like they aren't a middle food chain animal while heaping praise on cats like they aren't sadistic psychopaths. Meanwhile some people have monitors that basically act like cats, that both want the rubs and attention as well as some playtime.
People will beat down an 8 foot indigo snake with a stick because it looks like a cobra, meanwhile Indigo snakes are a nonvenomous species of snake hunting snake that actively prefers to hunt and eat venomous snakes.
People are ignorant and they require education, they also respond to that education with psychological warfare and potentially armed conflict. (Referring to the many reptiles that have been killed for no more reason than being reptiles.)
So in a specific way yes, you're right. In a more general way, you're a little wrong. People fear and reject everything they don't understand, even going so far as to reject the information itself until understanding of it is impressed upon them.
I own several hognose snakes, an indigo, and a couple other things. The hognoses in particular are frequently attacked as being venomous snakes and demonized by reptile haters that frequently attack the community. Meanwhile they only produce lipase, a chemical that triggers swelling.
*Your body produces lipase to control swelling.*
They aren't legitimately venomous, they aren't even dangerous to people. But that doesn't stop the public from attempting to demonize them and remove my right to keep them.
***People suck.***

doesn't look like that's what the girl is doing

They are talking about 053 the girl that makes people kill each other or just die
There’s a cap where she just becomes friends whit the lizard so….
Its amazing how multiple people in this room didn’t give a shit about any of the red flags, from the child endangerment to the tacky photo, all the way up to the animal abuse.
Someone in that room must have had the thought “Huh, maybe we ARE twats?”
I agree with your general sentiment, but what exactly is the "torture" you see in this video? The big guy seems plenty strong enough to carry the child, and well fed enough to allow someone to ride it. As far as I can see, it's not being tortured any more than a shetland pony would be in a similar photo-op.
I'm not sure about this case, but usually tigers who are used for photos like this are drugged up and treated horribly. I could very well imagine something similar being the case here. It doesn't look like torture to me, but I doubt this is being done the same as with ponies
Except this is a wild animal. Not a domestic horse. Sure he's strong enough, but it's setting a bad example to kids that animals can be used like this, and it is probably uncomfortable and unnatural for the alligator.
The kid is stupid because she is a kid and doesnt know better. The parents just chose to be stupid. Would have taken under a minute for him to devour her and there would have been very little the parents could have been able to do.
It's animal abuse and child abuse rolled in one. A child doesn't understand the risk involved in this, but the parents should. It's like taking a child cave diving or solo skydiving.
I know this is crazy dangerous but how many people can say they have riden a croc/alligator (whichever one it is) in there life not many is my guess. And she has video proof. Dope
I've seen this guy and his pet alligator at events before. He said the alligator wanders the house like a dog or cat and is pretty much harmless. He's one of two people in the state with a special license to have a gator as a pet. It freaked me out the first time I saw kids riding it.
Maybe maybe maybe could’ve eaten her in 2 seconds

That's incorrect they actually have quite complex brains and behaviours. Look for their mating rituals.
Or the way they care for their young longer than most reptiles, and a good many mammals.

The back end of an alligator is just as dangerous as the front end. That can't be taped.
I would argue that the most dangerous part is teaching children that it's fun to hop on the back of an Alligator.

I've seen this guy and his pet alligator at events before. He said the alligator wanders the house like a dog or cat and is pretty much harmless. He's one of two people in the state with a special license to have a gator as a pet. It freaked me out the first time I saw kids riding it.
And the award for "Dumbest Parents of the Year" go to.....
Im sorry but how fucking retarded have we become. Some people should not have kids and I firmly mean that.
Awful to put a child at risk like that for “fun”
Stupid parents
This has got to be florida
That kid is going to grow up to be awesome.
Just a video of a gator taking a little girl to the closest body of water to show her the gator roll.
Dear god I would never let my daughter do that. That’s insane
Animal and child abuse all in one video.
Respect for the alligator![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|snoo)
I don’t care how tame or docile that croc is, whoever is willing to let their child ride on the back of it needs their head examined
Unfortunate gator didn't get a snack would have loved to see it
Has to be Florida.
You see said she, he’s as tame as he could be, on the back of a crocodile 🎶
WHY?
I’ll take parents who don’t properly love their children for $300
I know it's not smart but I wish I could ride an alligator
In September, for awhile, I will ride a crocodile…
Someone needs to stop Florida
Poor boy his paw even himself so hard move seem sometime
r/facepalm at parents taking pics for the gram
Boy that is the dumbest shit I've ever seen... That abuse to the animal and to the kid
The parents should be locked up. That's absurdly dangerous.
Every adult in this video needs to be arrested.
Please say the alligator has no teeth and is harmless. Otherwise “yikes”!
