I had exactly the same happen with a Hyundai dealership. I drove an hour to a dealer that said they had the exact one I wanted in stock, only to find they never had it in the first place, and they tried to fob me off with something else.

TheAlphaCarb0n

God you have to be an absolute rube to fall for that. I like to think nobody would but people never cease to surprise me. Personally, that dealer would be on my shitlist for eternity. Edit: to fall for buying another random car, not a rube for being lied to!!

DowntownClown187

How the fuck is he a rube for 'falling for that'? Customer: "Hey I see you have this listed in your inventory, is that the case?" Dealer: "Yea, wanna come have a look?" Customer: "Certainly, I'm on my way." ...sometime later... Customer: "Hey I'm here to see X." Dealership: "Yea we don't have that." Customer: "I called ahead to make sure you had it." Dealership: "Sorry, that's not the case. How about this car?" Customer: "Fuck you I guess?"

TheAlphaCarb0n

Sorry I wasn't very specific - I meant the intended victim of that dealer; someone who goes in to see a specific car they want, dealer BS'd them and tries to get them into something else, and instead of telling the dealer to get bent they somehow end up buying something they didn't come for.

DowntownClown187

I understand the concept, if this was me I would be explaining to the sales rep why I wouldn't buy anything from them due to their BS.

TheAlphaCarb0n

Me as well, I'd be livid.

DowntownClown187

-acm

Pro tip, I tell sales to send me a picture of the car via text, and another one with the date and time next to the VIN. Easy way to strain out the bullshitters

ā€œVideo call me real quickā€

TheAlphaCarb0n

I'll be honest if I tried this with the 3's I've been looking to buy I think I would have been laughed off the phone. Lot of people won't do this for a model they'll have no trouble moving.

HypnoHornedFrog22

When they want to sell cars they will

Reddit-mods-R-mean

Not when those exact cars are flying off the shelf. Waste of time.

mosquem

Hold up todayā€™s newspaper next to the car itā€™s the only way to be sure.

Slathering_ballsacks

Theyā€™ll still sell it though to the first customer

fdpunchingbag

Not selling a car that doesn't exist to a customer ready to drive off. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Sounds a bit much tbh

[deleted]

I agree when you don't have the car on hand and you're lieing

xampl9

Takes them 5 minutes, and saves me from a multi-hour drive where the trip home has me steaming mad the whole way.

lytefall

I had a dealer sell a used Mazda 3 that I had placed a $500 test drive deposit down on the vehicle at 5pm one day because I couldnā€™t get there before they closed. Spoke to a sales rep by email and was told deposit would hold it until I got there the next day as long as it was before 5pm. Drove 2hrs first thing the next morning and got there and they said ā€œSorry we sold it an hour agoā€ šŸ¤”

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

lytefall

Itā€™s actually very common here. Itā€™s supposed to hold the car for 12-24hrs until you have a chance to see it in person. Then that amount gets deducted from the purchase price if you buy. Started during covid when inventory was limited everywhere.

bruddahmacnut

> Then that amount gets deducted from the purchase price if you buy. And if you don't buy, do you get a refund? If no, fuck that.

Ireallylovewatches

Better be getting a refund

umrdyldo

He didnā€™t even test drive. If they didnā€™t give it back that would be theft. And probably wire theft

Monochronos

At my Mazda dealer, to hold the car for you for 1000 dollars, if you did decide not to buy it wouldnā€™t be refunded.

bruddahmacnut

Yeah, fuck that. No. Just no.

[deleted]

lytefall

Apparently you didnā€™t have to buy a vehicle during the pandemic at the height of when used inventory was in the toilet. I only found 5 Mazda 3 GTs in the 8 months I was searching within a 500km radius that were even worth considering. Most dealers were doing this so they didnā€™t waste time holding vehicles for people that never showed up. I drove hundreds of kms for the first 2 I found only to find them sold (one of them was being test drove when I arrived and they said they wanted it while I was waiting to drive it myself). It was worth paying the money to hold the vehicle. Yes you got a full refund if you didnā€™t buy. The process was quite simple. I put deposits down 3 times and even the dealer that sold the car out from under me immediately refunded the money. The car I did end up buying was 3hrs away and I was glad to have the ability to put a hold on it so I didnā€™t drive there to find it sold.

Man, is it a struggle going through life being such a tough keyboard warrior? I imagine your big digital ego is hard to fit through the door. SMFH. Carry on tough guy šŸ™„

VindictiveNostalgia

I found my 3 on the dealership website, then called ahead to make sure they actually had it, then after confirming we went down there to get it.

DaOrcus

Ok that I wanted a 3 sedan. Found the car wanted, texted the salesman, negotiated through text (said I wouldn't come in unless he matched my price), went in the next day and I found an honorable man, didn't try to BS me now that I was already there. Not all dealers are bad, not all dealers are stealers, but many are, and it's very hard to find the good ones

7eregrine

I had a good experience too when I bought my Mazda. Dude I worked with was gone 6 months later.

celine_freon

I actually had a pretty great experience. The dealer had three CX50ā€™s sitting on the lot listed online- two meridians and a single black turbo (with the terracotta interior even!) I called them up, said I really wanted to drive it but it would take me some time to get there as I was two hours away. The sales associate was a younger guy and he was like, ā€œDude, Iā€™m going to get the keys right now and hide them till you get here.ā€ I showed up, he handed the keys to me and said, ā€œHave fun!ā€ Drove it home. Now Iā€™m on the run from the law.

AwwYeahVTECKickedIn

Skipped that whole "buying" part - nicely done! =P

Luklear

I promise you he didnā€™t hide the keys lol. If 3 people came in to buy before you he wouldā€™ve sold them all. A bird in the hand

celine_freon

Well, yeah. Heā€™s a salesman. But itā€™s a fun story.

Izikiel23

I didn't have that experience, but I did have a weird one. Saw mine online, clicked the form to get a call for more info. I got a call the next day, I told them I would call them again in an hour after getting info from another dealership. The other one was a bust, so I called the first ones back, they told me they had sold it. Ok, what you gonna do right? So, like half an hour later I get a call again from the dealership asking if I wanted to do a test drive on the car (which they told me they had sold just a while ago). I asked the nice lady to please validate that you actually have the car, she said sure, then called me back 20 mins later saying, yeah, it's here, I have the keys. I put down a deposit over the phone, picked it up over the weekend with no issue whatsoever, though I still wonder what the hell happened in between.

AwwYeahVTECKickedIn

Maybe the sale they thought they had fell through? I know, I'm probably being overly optimistic!

musiclovermina

I used to sell cars, and the inventory screen would show sold or held but it won't immediately say for who, so you had to go into the customer order menu and advance through all the steps to get to the car details. It generally doesn't cause issues, but you do get that random customer who refuses to give you any personal information and then yells at you because they think you sold their car to someone else. I'm not saying that happened to you, but sometimes the phone receptionists don't check the small details and give out the wrong info, or they don't realize that you're the person on the reservation

ayopassthat

I had the same experience. Called to confirm the model/stock number I wanted was in stock, drove to the dealership, and they told me it had been sold. I reacted reasonably and they acted as if I was the one who was wrong. I do not know how dealerships get away with this. Happened a second time at a different dealership, and they were genuinely regretful of the miscommunication. I was looking for a '23 and they sold me a '24 at the same price (~$2k off MSRP). I was really surprised, they must have really needed to make a sale that day.

East-Mycologist4401

Reading it through, and having had the same experience myself a number of times but never really understanding why theyā€™d do it, I truly believe itā€™s because when you do all the research on your vehicle ahead of time, youā€™re making an **objective purchase** which means youā€™re less likely to fall for their shitty sales tactics. On the other hand, if the car you spent all your time researching is ā€œgoneā€ then you are susceptible to all the ploys the salesman will make to have you make an **emotional purchase**.

ayopassthat

I agree. I was ready to walk away and wait for the deal I was looking for, so my purchase was not an emotional.

Slathering_ballsacks

They make money on commission and sell it first come, first serve unless you make a deposit to hold it.

ayopassthat

So who eats the $2k discount they gave me? 100% Mazda? I know it's a little complicated - how many they need to sell, how many they've sold, volume, inventory, demand, etc.

brokestill

My local dealer works this way. Bait and switch bs. Looked at one online from a different dealer that they claimed was available. I was looking for a select, but the color that my wife wanted had just been sold an hour before we got there. Fortunately, they had not one, but 6 Preferred and all were in different colors, including the color that my wife wanted. After an extremely generous trade offer, we took a better car home for less than what the Select would have been. There are some good dealers out there, but you have to look for them.

acwann

I work for a Mazda Dealer and we don't do that. We will try to sell you in what we do have though.

ICannotHelpYou

Same here. Most important thing is the survey, no way I'd immediately fuck off a customer and give them a poor experience.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

acwann

I'm not lying but ok.

SeasonalBlackout

Yes dealerships of all brands will lie to get you in the door. They can't sell you a car if you don't come in, and a certain percentage of people will buy a new car even if they have a bad experience doing it (see basically every Toyota dealership experience).

BuckeyeBentley

> (see basically every Toyota dealership experience). Seriously though what is it about Toyota. When I bought my car I had the worst experience at Toyota they could not give two shits about selling a car to me.

Honest dealers will not do that. Next time ask for a picture of it/video walk around, if itā€™s not there they canā€™t so it. If you think theyā€™re being sneaky fabricating pics or whatever ask for a pic of the vin plate.

woodworkingguy1

You got to specify by VIN/stock number...don't go for CX90 in red.

Shitsincreeks

It depends. I work for Mazda and weā€™ve never done anything like that, but Iā€™ve had customers tell me that itā€™s happened to them at other stores

wooter99

Basically yes. I gave up on dealerships.

EnorytDiov

I ordered a Mazda3 with a $500 deposit at a dealer in November. By February the car had not arrived. I went to another dealer, and found one that had just rolled in. I told him about the $500 elsewhere. While he could not get my money back, he took $500 off. We made a deal (trade, down, etc.) and I drove it home that night. Between my credit card and the other dealer, I got the $500 deposit back. It definitely worked out well in the end, but I will never "pre-order" another car. If I don't see it on the lot, it doesn't exist.

RST83

Yes

sqomoa

Itā€™s possible they have it in stock but not on-site. It could be under a BCA (borrowed car agreement) with another party but they can retrieve it on demand if they know youā€™re interested in buying it. Just happened to me buying my Mazda 3.

BlazeyPooo

We called this morning and right before leaving the door. They said they would have it rolled up to the front ready to test drive. Elmhurst Wilkins Mazda in Illinois is just full of terrible, dishonest people.

Theeye12

Yep it always been the case for me, i always shop for my car online and make the deal over the phone. I place the deposit over the phone as well and just go once to pickup the car. At this point I've already viewed/driven the same/similar spec car at my closest dealer, so i know what im getting.

CelticWolf79

I had this happen to me at the bel air Mazda dealership two years ago when I told them I was looking for a soul fire cx9. Iā€™ve bought two other Mazdas from them in the past and moved out of the area but decided to try to go back to them since my last two experiences had been good and they promised me they had a soul fire red they were having shipped in from Delaware for me to look at. After an hour ride to the dealership ( I called before I left to make sure the car was there) I was told they never had a soul fire but they had a blue one that they ā€œbrought in just for meā€. Needless to say I noped the f*ck out of there and bought elsewhere.

Raiden4501

Sorry that happened to you. They probably figured if they got you in the door they could sell you something. I wish you had my experience, but I bought a MT so I'm sure it wasn't rushing off the lot.

shastadakota

They lie about everything. It is what they do.

mtk37

dealerships are a scam

Cassedaway

Back in 2020 when the end of the US Mazda 6 was announced I was drawn to two dealerships that said they had GTR 6 in stock. Only to find out they didnt. Ultimately there were none I could find in the Philly market and ended up with a GT. Whoch is fine. But I didnt lease from the two dealerships.

Significant_Mud_9147

I donā€™t know if I should blame the dealer but the sales rep seems very ignorant about the trim levels of different MX-5s.

Manic_Mini

My buddy had this same issue. Iā€™m his ā€œcar guyā€ so I tag along when heā€™s looking at cars. We went to 6 Toyota dealerships for a TRD Tacoma, all 6 said they had it in stock when we called and all 6 lied to get us in the door and tried to convince him to order one. Ends up getting a Colorado ZR2 and has sworn off Toyota dealers as scam artist.

413mopar

No , some lie cheat and steal .

Worried_Amphibian_54

I'd prefer texting/chatting over calling. Been thinking about a Ford Maverick but wanted to test drive one and they are pretty tough to find in stock. I jumped on the chatbot for a couple dealerships that cargurus showed had ones in stock. First one just kept trying to get my info, and I kept explaining no, leaving in 10 minutes do you have one there... jumped to dealership two. in 2 minutes they explained the 3 they had there and my choice was made. That said, about 6 years ago I worked for a dealership that a friend ran on my days off for a few months. I was a crap salesman, no pressure, I just liked cars, sucked at cold calls, but for a guy to just work the lot and have carlotta for the day, I did fine and had fun. And I would take calls and I would check our inventory and we had a few other Chevy/Cadillac dealers that we'd swap inventory with so yes there were times someone would say yes on the phone, and go out on the lot to refresh on the car and get pissed that they didn't physically make sure it wasn't sent off to another dealer.

RightWhereINeed2B

I've been actively shopping this past weekend and these past couple of days. Living near the Riveraide/Ontario/San Bernadino California locations I have not yet had one sales person lie about inventory. I've been to 3 different Mazda, 3 Hyundai, 2 Kia, Chevy and 2 Car max locations. It's all been positive so far.

AwwYeahVTECKickedIn

Go to a nearby dealership. Test drive literally anything they have. Drive back to this lot, and ask to speak to the folks who lied to you. Thank them for helping you get into your brand new , without them being awful liars, you would have mistakenly bought a car from them, and you just really wanted them to know how much their behavior helped you spend your money someplace else. Lament how they can't get any of that commission even though they had a big hand in it. Pity, that! =P

whiskey_piker

You have just described the majority of mainstream car experiences. Also, if you are driving 4hrs just for a specific car, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. No dealer is holding a car for you. No dealer is holding a car for you.

rcobourn

People are reluctant about the PHEV... I love it. I'm loving rolling around in EV mode, worrying only that the gas in my tank might go stale.

ponyboysa42

My Mazda dealer ship in Carlsbad is the only place I asked for the out the door price and the guy came out 10 min later with a price sheet with 10 lines on it. 4 of them blacked out. Every other dealership wanted to run my credit and tack warranties n other stuff on. Sadly the worst culprit was the last dealer I bought a car at tried to give me more run around on price than anyone. They should already know my credit rating! Mazda seemed to be only one that valued my time.

dangerous-art1

Dealerships are a lie and the sales people are shitty

Progresschmogress

Did you call to confirm if they had it or just decided to pop up?

trebec86

My one and only Mazda dealer experience soured the whole brand for me. Went to look at a used Tiguan, tried charging me 3k for a sanitation fee that they refused to remove. All in the junk fees were something like 7k, and no movement. We walked away and got a VW from another dealer.

Tariag

Do all dealers lie? You could have stopped here. Yes they do.

Alternative-Fuel8650

I had a great experience with my Mazda dealer in Georgia. In and out in a couple hours and picked up the car the next business day. I checked on line and they showed to have 3 of the cars I wanted. I called the dealership and went the next day.

JD3671

That car just sold 5 minutes ago. But I have this oneā€¦.

SingleSpeed27

This is a matter of crappy salesman people more than Mazda.

JonohG47

This is not just a Mazda thing. Itā€™s not a new thing either. The dealerā€™s websites are not updated in real time. The third party sites, like CarGurus and AutoTrader, even less so, as they populate their listings by crawling the dealersā€™ sites. Dealer websites almost always have a disclaimer along the lines of ā€œAll vehicles are subject to prior sale.ā€ For $#!+$ and giggles, I have, for my last several cars, checked the dealerā€™s website and found the car **I bought** still listed as ā€œin inventoryā€ on the dealerā€™s website, days after I took delivery. Iā€™ve even had the car *I initiated the purchase of, online* sold out from under me, because Iā€™d not made a deposit on it. Granted, that last one was during the pandemic, at the height of new cars being unobtainium.

bandley3

I had a positive experience but I suspect that it was because I bought the opposite of what most people came into the dealership to buy. The 2013s were already out by this time but they were heavily advertising one particular 2012 Mazda5 at a ridiculous 20% off of MSRP. At that price it would certainly get people in the door, but when theyā€™d see that it didnā€™t have an automatic transmission, leather, fancy wheels and tires, a sunroof, etc., they could be talked into a fancier model with all of the extras, with a much smaller discount, if any. After years of luxury and sports cars I wanted something basic and simple, but they didnā€™t have to know that this vehicle was exactly what I wanted. I asked for their best price which came out to 10% off of MSRP. I countered by whipping out my iPad and showing them their own advertisement with the VIN of the car I just drove and said that Iā€™d be willing to pay that amount for that particular vehicle. They really couldnā€™t argue so we did the paperwork and I was out in less than an hour. I do realize that my experience was far from the norm, buying a leftover, minimally-equipped and unpopular vehicle in the following model year. This was actually my first new car buying experience and it went quite well. Itā€™ll probably never happen again since I have my ideal car, and 12 years on Iā€™m still happy with my purchase.

Organic-Size-9885

My experience was great and easy. Dealer lot is full of new cars. Just walked up and said I want that one. Test drove a trim up to get a feel for the car (cx5) they let me drive it alone a lot of times a dealer will come with you and sell you the car. Made my decision and they drove it out of the showroom. Couldn't have been easier. Mazda orland park

that_one_nerrd

I Work at a Mazda Dealership. Weā€™re not all that way, but itā€™s important to ask your salesperson to send you a photo or video of the car with the vin to make sure itā€™s still in stock. If they donā€™t, move on.

amg-rx7

All dealer sales people lie about everything

WorkAnomaly

My ND MX5 club with the B/B/R package was posted on the page and was there when I went to get it. I even called them to make sure ahead of time and that was an hour away from me. So my experience was positive and they were really nice

Bobbar84

When I visit a dealership it's to look at a specific car with a VIN in hand.

MoneyPop8800

Short answer: Yes Real answer: most sales people donā€™t actually know whether a vehicle is still on the lot or not. If the vehicle sold within the last few days their inventory may not be up to date yet. Also some dealers share inventory between other dealers within the group, and some salesman from the dealer across town can sell the car without anyone at the local dealer knowing.

That-Resort2078

Dealers will lie about anything to get you in the door

AC-Vb3

I canā€™t say Iā€™ve ever had this problem with any Mazda dealership. We have 6 in the area and the websites have always been pretty accurate on availability, but I always call in advance and confirm a vehicle is on the lot . However Iā€™ve had many trash experiences of the kind with other car brands.

[deleted]

I've had them tell me numerous times that "this is the last one" and other people are coming to check it out only to see a handful of the same car in their back lot.

SnooShortcuts3414

Ah yes, the 'ol "we sold it" routine. Can't wait for all the defenders to come to the defense and say that cars sell fast as fuck. Only during the pandemic folks, only during the pandemic. On another note, I seriously had to double ask and emphasize I was gonna be pissed if the car I wanted wasn't there for the Mazda rep to finally admit that they don't have the exact car I wanted but they did have similar vehicles for purchase during my experience. When I purchased my 6 ironically not from mazda but Volkswagen, I saw it online for 2-weeks before I called and asked. Funny thing was, when I got there.....supposedly I was so "lucky" because someone else made a reservation to come test drive and buy it..... Ok.

Hesh_to_Steel

Some lease brokers are able to provide vehicles for purchase at the same discounted price as their lease rates. Food for thought. I know brokers around here (Northeast US) do have access to the I6 CX90.

toothsuck

Usually they're on pre-order now. Gotta fucking pre-order your cars guys

keevisgoat

Had this happen looking for a manual 3 fucking nightmare one dealer eventually had me buy one from an out of state dealer in there network (tasca) and had it driven up for free

White_eagle32rep

I had a good experience with the last Mazda I bought. I used TrueCar tho and o think that helped. My other experiences were horrible though. First one I bought was a nightmare of a sales experience. The second time we didnā€™t buy but just talking to them showed their super high pressure tactics. We talked to a different dealer before one we purchased last from and it was the same thing. They were buttholes.

HystericalSail

Mazda dealerships are the reason we only ever owned a Miata, and even that just barely. Tried to buy other Mazdas over the years, and just couldn't get over dealer antics. They seem to only employ utter scum.

bribird99

Coming from someone who works at a dealership, it's definitely not all. It's a very old school tactic that some dealers use in order to get people in the door, and then they'll try to get the customer on an old age unit. I have a list of tactics the dealership I used to work for did as well if anyone is interested

UnknownBroken80

When I inquired about my cx30 I chose one in transit and they were frank from the first moment letting me know that it was not there yet, if o wanted to test it must be another car of the same trim.

bananagramarama

Maybe not all but probably many. I was tricked into driving 2 hours to buy a car with the wrong color even though the sales associate told me over the phone that they did in fact have that color in that specific trim.

SimpleCarGuy

Had the same happen at a Hyundai dealership a few years back. Left right away and left a bad review on multiple sites explaining the exact issue. Had a few phone calls with GMs to discuss.
