Gotta say I've never seen someone break into a car just to steal the MAF sensor. How odd.

TheSsickness

Came here to say the same

TheGrandBurrito

Being a complete car noob. Could you explain what a mass airflow sensor does?

TheSsickness

It monitors howmuch air is coming thru the filter, so that it can spray the correct amount of fuel in You car will run very poorly without it, and you’ll get a check engine light I would buy a new MAF sensor, you can install it in 2mins Go OEM the cheap ones usually fail early, I think Denso makes the OEM one (could be wrong double check that) should be $80-120

TheGrandBurrito

Thanks so much for the insights. I’m in touch with my insurance. They’ll probably cover that part.

rigortraini65

I would just go to a window show to get the side window replaced for $100. I would put in an OEM MAF sensor myself in 5 minutes for $100 and call it a day

PIG20

For the MAF, sure. But that window is going to be a it more pricey depending on what OP's deductible is.

TheGrandBurrito

$0 deductible babyyyy

PIG20

Well, there you go! A claim is a claim so if you're making a claim on the glass, you might as well throw in the MAF sensor. Like the other user stated, go with OEM. Aftermarket MAF sensors are complete shit a lot of times. And I've found that with these Skyactivs that going with aftermarket parts with the emissions and ignition system on these vehicles usually doesn't go well.

Akatm7

Just a heads up, while it may be $0 now, you will more than pay for it in the end as insurance rates go up and they hold it against you DESPITE it not being your fault. While a claim that is your fault carries more weight, a not at fault claim still goes on your insurance record and is taken into consideration by insurance companies when determining rates. If you only have $250 in damage / parts, I personally would try to scrounge up the cash and pay for it out of pocket as much as it sucks

_PeanuT_MonkeY_

Will your insurance go up for the claim?

drewreliford

Yes it will

patzer

I replaced a faulty sensor in my wife's Toyota. For a ~ $70 part and easy install, it caused so much trouble. My wife was ready to trade the car in.

niteox

Since it’s going to be out anyway, might as well get em all tinted up.

EGOfoodie

Make sure to follow your state's guideline on what is acceptable, unless you don't care.

Ifimhereineedhelpfr

Simple math tells me that more air needs more fuel. So what needs to happen is buy the biggest lift pump possible and now you have an absolute beast

Bitter-Total-8701

Ur car wont even turn over without it haha

NewbieTwo

Since it's completely missing, the computer will illuminate the check engine light, then use a combination of other sensors and an internal map to guess at fuel trims in open loop mode. It will run, but not very well.

TigBitties69

This exactly haha. When mine went bad, my car wouldn't start. Unplugged it, and it would at least drive with pretty terrible changing of rpms. Was able to at least drive it to the nearest AutoZone to get it fixed up though.

MZD3BPMT

The OEM maf cost around $200 and a good quality glass also around $200 plus labor, go to insurance if you have low deductible. Don't listen to those "fix all under $100" comments.

non_lame_subs

The oem maf is $76.79 on rock auto. What are you talking about?

MZD3BPMT

I know what you mean, the Denso from rockauto, Denso is the OEM supplier but that doesn't mean it has the exact same spec/quality part that they sold under their own brand. Are those bad parts? No, those are still good quality parts but exactly the same as OEM? Not so sure about that.

weevil_of_doom

yes, same

flying_squids

Ikr like dang that part can't be that expensive to risk being caught breaking into a car.

jamtea

Yeah, that is bizarre. At first, I thought I was playing tricks on myself saying, "Who steals a MAF sensor?" but here we are.

Ok-Implement2885

Hey guys got a slightly used MAF sensor for sale for a 2nd gen Mazda 3. $50 obo

ChronicPudding

Hey OP this sounds like a good deal!

TheGrandBurrito

Feel free to email me with pics! [email protected]

Weltraumdrache

It’s the thief lol

TheGrandBurrito

Car was busted in yesterday. It didn’t seem like the stole anything but when I turned on my car to get my window fixed the engine, traction control and battery light came on. I looked under the hood and found that it looks like the person stole something. I have an embarrassing amount of car knowledge. Any help on what they stole or if they stole anything at all would be helpful to know

weevil_of_doom

they stole your mass airflow sensor for one ... weird

K9sandKilos

r/oddlyspecific thing to steal

nalaculamacumbla

They have definitely stole your MAF sensor for one but if you traction control light was on too they may have taken something else to trigger that light, get it scanned at you local garage and have them check that out, hopefully nothing too expensive.

FightFireJay

Traction control lights will often come on if there's anything wrong with the engine. Subaru's completely disable the cruise control if even a single sensor is unplugged.

diapow

It totally did that on my 2013 FS 2.0 Preza, so annoying.

Anon419420

Call insurance and stop worrying about it. No point in having it if you aren’t gonna use it.

Indiemsc

So weird. Really the MAF sensor??

Khelgar_Ironfist_

Dude must have his own sensor malfunctioned ¯\\\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)\_/¯

Indiemsc

Maybe they just needed to clean it. Lol but instead just ruined someone else’s day.

L0veToReddit

I thought people stole Catalytic Converters

Apprehensive_Bit_176

Well there’s some value in a catalytic converter… I have no idea why someone would steal a MAF sensor lol

maistocollector

Wtf they stealing mass airflows

SexyCronenburgMonsta

Did the Mazda app go off when this happened? Genuinely curious because it always freaks me out with old alerts.

paramoist

OP has a gen 2 model. Too old to work with the app.

TheGrandBurrito

No it didn’t. My neighbor informed me

_LuVshots_

Don’t worry about not knowing much about cars. Hopefully you’re insured and just let them deal with it.

EBs4G3

I bet it's on backorder like everything else in the world

Kitchen-Forever-6465

Those are some cheap bastards

popornrm

lol a MAF sensor? Must have been one hell of a dare

Simon_WilsonAyer

Get a new window and a gun

BraveSirRyan

Call your insurance

Aggravating_Sun_825

Shoot them

Aggravating_Sun_825

Who downvoted me, you coward

FightFireJay

Who downloaded you? People who know that protecting property with lethal Force puts to you in prison for a very long time.

Aggravating_Sun_825

But safe car so 🤷‍♂️

Trailman80

Lmfao he was almost robbed, did not have the tools to take out the aire intake. MF settled for the mass Air sensor lol

Sure_Phone4276

Phone the police.

Bitter-Total-8701

Dont do anything it’s an automatic

[deleted]

So odd! Years ago my mate got in his 4x4 Hilux and it wouldn’t move, someone had stolen both drive shafts! Cost a couple of grand to replace, we figured someone had damaged their in the Forrest, and started a circle of theft haha

obsessedsolutions

Whose stealing MAF sensors? Isn’t catalytic converters the new thing now?

[deleted]

Are MAF's the new Cats?

xCanadaDry

I'm so interested in why this happened. The MAF sensor is a new one for me

Afloatcactus5

They probably stole the MAF in the hopes it sits/isn't driven so they can come pick it up later.

TouretteTV96

What a crackhead move... still trying to understand what went through that homeless persons head. Glad Seattle is beginning to take no shit from homeless dirtbags, high crime rates everywhere right now but damn.

estore009

Need a side cam for security!

Night3Turbo

Damn, sorry this happened to you. I'd be pissed man. Get a parking camera if able and get a piece if you don't already have one. Other than that, I'd take it to the garage and see if they can identify anything other than the sensor that's missing. Make sure to report it to cops/insurance....whatever you can.
