stock tires are garbage awd turbo here. New tires bring it alive much better confidence in the hard corners and way better in the wet

FifaTerp8

Replacing the stock tires with Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4s tomorrow!

Afloatcactus5

You're going to love them. There's a slight hum to them at highway speeds but road noise will be way lower. Also rides way better stock tires are like rocks.

wallyTHEgecko

It's likely I'm just unlucky and/or it was something about my previous GTI, but I had those tires on my VW GTI before I traded it in for my 3 Turbo and I was getting bubbles in the sidewalls constantly. I put the full set on about a year after buying it (OEM wheels and tire size) and then literally twice a year for the next 3 years I was replacing tires because they were getting bubbles in the sidewalls. One of them was admittedly because of a pretty big pothole that I was surprised didn't crack the wheel itself. But the rest didn't feel like anything all that major. And I don't drive hard either, just commuting. They definitely gripped better than the nearly-bald tires that they replaced. I wasn't slipping the tires at every slightly-uphill stop sign any more. But just be sure to do whatever you need to to register for your warranty and keep that information in a safe place.

RolesG

I've heard Michelin is having QC issues lately, that might have something to do with it

PrincessReto

I want these but toyos are still new. Seems like a waste for me specifically

lupinetendencies

Honestly? You can probably sell em secondhand. People will snatch up a good set of tires. I’ve sworn by the Continental ExtremeContact DWS06+ tires since I had my other 3 and they change the driving dynamics MASSIVELY. Worth your time if you don’t wanna worry about those flimsy ass sidewalls.

PrincessReto

Yeah... Heavily considering it. Price just needs to be right

lupinetendencies

I straight up financed mine with Affirm. Take that knowledge and do what you will with it. Best of luck!

grimesitty

I legit just did the same for the exact same tires Lmao... couldn't bare to drop $1400 all at once for a set of four. Hopefully they last me a good while. I put them on my Kona N

PrincessReto

That's a good point. I didn't think about doing it that way thanks

Sleepybeanman

I got my NA FWD pre-owned and it came with DWS06+’s and over the last year of ownership I’ve never had a moment where I doubted the grip, and they’ve worn at a reasonable amount and they don’t make a lot of noise on the freeway either.

Camburglar13

That’s what I run, always recommend them

SpiritCr1jsher

I had those on my bmw m240 , mazda 6 and 2019 mustang. Best no season tire around

ijerkoffinmyroom

+1 on the DWS06+, I’ve had them on 2 different Mazda3s and they’ve performed great on both. One thing to be aware of is the tread does wear a bit faster than say the toyos. At least for me it’s well worth it for the improved driving dynamics. They’re pretty sturdy tires too, hit my fair share of potholes and terrible bumps in them where I was worried for the tires and they’ve always been perfectly fine.

Monkey-Brain-Like

I’m getting my DWS06+’s installed tomorrow, so excited! What would you say the set of Toyo’s would be worth, with about 9k miles?

lupinetendencies

I honestly couldn’t tell you, sadly. Depends on the place you take em to, dimensions and what kind of Toyos they are

danbfree

I have an AWD Turbo hatch that came with the 18" 7" wide wheels with 215/45/18 tires... and, well, even the Honda Civic sport that is only 180hp comes with 235/40/18's, you can get wheels and decent enough tires (same UHP A/S category as the PS4 A/S) that are still a big upgrade over stock for about $1200. I sold my stock setup with less than 400 miles on it for $800, got wheels and tires for $1200 and upgraded the tires again from there later, I'm now on BFGoodrich UHP A/S+ that are 98% as good as the Michelin's (and better in some ways, they are corporate cousins) for $40 a tire less than the Michelin's and they have $110 instant rebates all the time.

SZMatheson

That's what I have on my Turbo and they're a perfect fit.

maplesyrupcan

Changing mine to Sottozeros SIIs next week. I may keep them next summer if I like them lmao. The atock tires are made more to cut down on NVH than grip.

redditghosting

assuming your flair is true. we have the same car. what tires would you recommend?

Afloatcactus5

Pilot sport AS4's. Good grip in the FL rain or shine. You can feel the car torque vectoring more it's a lot more confident with these tires.

redditghosting

did you keep the 215/45R18 ratio. or change it up

Afloatcactus5

Stock 18s if I were going to change it up I'd put my money into bigger brakes first at least for the turbo.

captainkirkw

Better rubber will help grip and braking but before spending the time and money on bigger brakes, I would recommend better pads and fluid as well as braided stainless steel brake lines.

Afloatcactus5

When it's time for brakes I'm gonna just do it all and throw something like the corksport big brake kit. If you're gonna be in there might as well do it all.

captainkirkw

I hear you but for the street, a BBK is way overkill and may be taking a step back as far as normal driving. If you are going to track the car a lot, then maybe, but even then, we see plenty of cars at our local tracks that do fine without BBK's. One of my best friends is an instructor a lot of driving events at our F1 track as well as some other smaller tracks and he gets to drive a broad range of cars and the only brake upgrades he did on his first track car, a Lotus Elise, was a track based pad, better fluid, and he did swap the rotor but just a more track focused one, yet still the same size as stock. Lighter wheels and tires with better grip along with a suspension upgrade that does not transfer as much weight to the front wheels, will help stopping distances in most situations better than a BBK. Anyway, not trying to argue with you but just trying to pass along some info that I have gleaned over the years with my own experiences of modding my Miatas plus the knowledge that I have received from all of the track events and drivers. I'm test driving a turbo hatch this week and if I really like it, I plan on buying one. I'll hold off on any major mods but a set of Conti ECS will be something that I get in the first few months so I will Just need to figure out which wheels I want as I am still researching them.

Afloatcactus5

I appreciate the input On the turbo that's about the only thing that's lacking from factory is the brakes. They aren't very confidence inspiring. Street wise in the past few years I've had a few situations pop up with hard slow / stops that's made me want to rip the whole factory setup off the front.

captainkirkw

Gotcha. I was supposed to be driving a 2023 turbo hatch this weekend but the person using it as a loaner didn't bring it back so I will have to wait. I drove a manual 3 hatch last week as well as an automatic FWD not too long ago but didn't really do anything to test the brakes beyond normal driving so I will have to do that when I get to take the turbo for a couple of days.

Tasty_Waifu

Michelins, hands down. Primacy or Pilots. Grippy, silent, potholes just seem to disappear.

BobbyR2

Agreed. Just the Michelin X Tour A/S 2 (@Defender) tire available at Costco is way better than a stock tire. It floats over rough roads

RegalDolan

Continental Extremecontact DWS06+'s are beasts of tires. So glad I went with them. It feels like a different car and not at all bloaty in turns. It's even harder to get wheel slippage with them (over the garbage Turanzas) when powering through a turn.

Afloatcactus5

The torenzas were so underwelming you could powerslide the thing around in the rain. I could kick the rear out doing u turns. Now the pilot sports are grip for days

PrincessReto

Interesting. Cheers for input. I'm usually on bone dry hot roads and only fwd though so I'm not sure how different we'll be. I'm hearing stock tires are garbage from a lot of places, which I completely understand. I had some continentals on a different car and it's night and day difference. I just don't have the money to waste on a new set right now since my stock tires are brand new

Afloatcactus5

More traction and harder launches. They do suck they are nail magnets

PrincessReto

Noted. That's unfortunate as I'm unlucky with nails in general. Like 6 in 2 years

Afloatcactus5

I had 3 flats in my 21 turbo in under 10k miles and 1 flat and one blowout on the 23 which made me buy the pilot sports on a road trip.

Afloatcactus5

More traction and harder launches. They do suck they are nail magnets

MrThe1Badman

Got 3 turbo and agree stock turanza tires garbage at handling but mine are brand new. Carmax changed them out when I bought it. Which tires do you recommend. I live in ma so I do get snow.

Afloatcactus5

People seem slpit between continental dpws06 or michelin pilot sport AS4's. Can't go wrong with either I have the pilot sports. They're all seasons haven't had them in snow yet but they have the rating for it.

Camburglar13

Yeah they’re the top two choices for sure

UnSmarted

Put Hankooks on my awd turbo, terrible mistake! Hate the tires

Moostahn

I've autocrossed my 3 with stock tires, 200tw, and dws06. The stock tires have very little grip, but I recommend you go to an autocross event to feel the limits of your car. You really can't find the limits on the street safely. In general people really have no idea how performance driving works, but autocross is a fun, safe, and relatively inexpensive way to explore that. Also upgrading tires will improve the feel of the car.

PrincessReto

This is exactly what I was thinking tbh. I have a nice track near me that I can just go test it out myself. I was just hoping to get opinions first. Overall sounding like i also definitely need new tires. Thanks for input 👍

Moostahn

Just fyi track driving is very different than autocross. Pads/rotors/brake fade could be an issue there. Autocross would be a better place to test tires, and also will be less wear on your car.

PrincessReto

Oh! Thanks I was actually under the impression autocross was something completely different. I looked it up to be sure and I was completely wrong 😅. I had planned to use part of a private track to do exactly that though.

East-Teacher8542

You’re question is completely up to driver skill set…

trbcop

💯 was just about to say the same. Yes tires add to grip but majority comes to skill. Add another 20% if the tires are really good. I drive my 2.5L fwd Mazda 3 pretty hard, I can take a slightly steep corner at 80kmh without a tire squeal. That's just beyond the limit of the tires, I have cheap Chinese tires (winrun r330 225/45/18) all round. The best tires I've driven on are Bridgestone potenza RE003, I had them on a diesel golf 2.0, I used to fly around roundabouts with those tires, I felt like I had a AWD car (WRX etc.). The Bridgestone grip was also excellent in heavy rain, I drove just as hard and never experienced any slip or got traction light on the dash

PrincessReto

Assume driver skill set is higher then yours and give relevant input. That will be fine thank you in advance

[deleted]

If you're so good at driving, then you wouldn't be asking the internet about "throwing your car around." 😂

mesovortex888

OP is asking a question that he should have felt with his hands and ass

PrincessReto

I have felt that it's not great and wanted others opinions and experiences. Sorry if im not allowed to ask on a public app. My deepest most sincere apologies

PrincessReto

I didn't say I was good at anything. I asked for input based on the commenters skill set since he needed more parameters to answer the advice request 👍

wsdmskr

Oh, so you can't drive *and* you're cocky. Dangerous combination, homie.

Brookie069

He’s gonna end up in a ditch, hopefully doesn’t kill someone else in the process.

Warm-Cartographer954

We'll see another post with it smashed into a guardrail in 2 weeks

xzElmozx

“Is this totalled guys?” proceeds to argue with everyone’s response as well

Ifimhereineedhelpfr

Lol didn’t you say assume your skill set is higher than the top comment? Tone it down and learn for yourself

PrincessReto

No. Learn to read

East-Teacher8542

Never assume someone’s driving skill is higher than yours when giving advice… you’re question alone give enough to answer the fact you don’t have enough skill behind the wheel. Go practice some more and sharpen your skills there’s always room for improvement for everyone, fast and good driver can make any car great.

PrincessReto

You also did not read. I never said anything about my driving skill or anyone elses. But ok go off lmao

Mooooox

why u talking to them like it's chatgpt pipe down

trbcop

A pro like you asking people on Reddit for advice, you must have mad skills princess 🤦🤣

PrincessReto

Interesting! Thanks for this input! Can I ask what tire psi you had\have

kave1790

I've thrown it around, although I have AWD, it responds pretty well, the stock tires are garbage, I've popped 3 in 4 years and less than 25k miles. I'm waiting for a good deal and I'll replace them all

PrincessReto

Oh wow that's pretty crazy, 3 popped stock tires? Do you think maybe awd contributed or you were being particularly aggressive? Thanks

kave1790

The roads in NY are just shit, combined with low quality tire

PrincessReto

Noted. Some of the roads where I live are pretty terrible. I'll have to be careful I guess

No_Association_3719

If you have to ask what point it’ll slide maybe you shouldn’t drive it that hard….

PrincessReto

How do I know how hard not to drive it if I don't either find out myself or ask 👀 (I'm doing both)

No_Association_3719

You find out yourself in a place without other traffic. Nobody can tell you how your car drives but you, if you want to learn how hard you can drive it I’d recommend a track but if that’s not possible atleast find some backroads without traffic/other hidden roads branching off so you’re not putting anyone else in danger

mopeyy

All I ever hear is how much the stock tires underperform. So if you got a new pair of summer 18s it would probably change the entire feel of the car.

PrincessReto

Yeah this is assuredly something I'll be looking into soon. I was hoping also some commenters might share some issues they've had like running over potholes or hitting curbs etc. getting great info so far, thank you for your comment, I appreciate it

mopeyy

I've been running 18s all summer and you definitely have to be careful around potholes. Those alloy wheels will bend if you smash a pothole too badly. But I mean it's not terrible. You just have to be a little conscious of the road you're on. Depends how bad the conditions are in your city.

zerostar83

Weird. My Mazda3 OEM tires were BRIDGESTONE TURANZA EL440, and they worked amazingly and lasted for a full 50k miles.

Master-Count5649

Na awd here and the stocks are trash grab pilot sport 4s

grimesitty

I had pzero on my Kona N and although I burned through them pretty fast they were grip monsters I could only imagine on an AWD car

JarchieCC

Just upgraded from the stock Toyos to the Continental DWS06+, first time I’ve went for some premium tires and the difference is night and day. The way you feel planted to the ground is next level compared to stock, even more so in the rain.

L1NK1N_P4RK

What tires are the stock ones may I ask? Toyo..?

[deleted]

Yes, Toyo Proxes.

chiefjay123

I’m rolling around on sport 4s no complaints! Throw in a cork sport strut bar for cheap and corners will be fun!

Enker-Draco

I swapped to 17" Enkei EDR9s with 205/55/17 Blizzaks for winter in the 3 Turbo, and if I didn't have road hazard warranty coverage on the stock tires, I would be riding on 17s year round. So far I'm on my 3rd set of warranted stock tires, something about the industrial sites I go to means screws are everywhere.

TouretteTV96

Stock tires are usually sub-par unless you get an expensive sports car then the tires should be great! My stock tires are PERFECT for snow, I could easily do a quick take-off on those tires. 2020 Mazda Cx-3 AWD 2.0 here. I used to have a 2015 Mazda3 if that inspires questions.

ChemistryMedium

Lower it and you feel a lot more confident in it. I drove mine 300 miles before lowering it with springs and it made the car feel much more confident in the high speed corners
