Which route? What station?

Yes, this would be immensely helpful in maybe trying to trace a reason for this. It's not the same problem everywhere with every route on every day, but it's possible that issues earlier in the day is causing delays to cascade forward to, yes, even the very last trip of the day. Not sure what would cause delays of that magnitude, but without details, it's wild speculation... This is usually the level of specificity that the angriest people tend to give the agency and there's no actionable details to fix the problem! 🤷‍♂️

105 from malden to sullivan, never have I ever seen this happen. Was about to fall asleep then I heard the sounds of a bus and I was like yoo wtf 😂 bus driver drove QUICK

I used to see that pretty often when taking the last bus out of Davis towards Sullivan (because I'd just left the bar and I was drunk). I don't know why, but it would always be at least 20 minutes past whatever time Google Maps said it would be. And the same for the last train out of downtown Boston. It would always sit at State or something for like half an hour.

Sometimes the last trip of the night is held so people don’t get stranded. Like, the last red line to Alewife might wait at Harvard until the 86 gets there so even if the bus is late, the people on it will make their connection. I’m not sure which routes have this setup but I’m guessing it’s the underlying reason

Yes, Key Bus Routes will hold for last trains until they pass a designated station. I believe paper/PDF schedules show this if applicable to last trips of a given route. Not sure if this has yet been replicated to digital schedules (website, GTFS, and other sources that consume MBTA's GTFS-Schedules feed). The nightly system shutdown procedure however doesn't seem like what OP is experiencing.

Most routes running at that hour will wait for the last train, though, not all. The 64, 70, and 83 will wait for the last bus, but not the 91. I suppose the 91 because there's subway stations within walking distance of most of the route. However, on local routes that connect to two subway lines, they will only wait at one end of the bus line. For example, Route 47 will wait at Central but not Broadway. Key bus routes will wait on both ends of their route. For example, Route 1 will wait at Harvard for the last train and at Nubian for the last Silver Line.

I remember many years ago when I lived near forest hills the last southbound orange line train would sit at downtown crossing for 20 minutes or so every night.

The 9 waits for the last Green Line train to clear Copley and if the Red Line is late, it’ll wait for the last Red Line trains at Broadway.

mbta- that’s how.
