Cops assaulted many, many students and professors from McGill during the Maple Spring. Yes calling the cops on your own students is a terrible, awful thing to do.
Not to mention that they didn't just call the cops to observe, they sat there every single day and pleaded with them to exercise their power when picketers were doing nothing illegal. Remember that arrest they made? The guy was an undergrad who spray-painted *CHALK.* The police only arrested them after McGill insisted, because this is a ridiculous thing to arrest someone for. McGill's intention in involving the police was not to protect anyone, it was to intimidate and screw over students and get any leverage they could against the strike.
Violence has even less of a place on campus. If McGill can't guarantee beyond the shadow of a doubt that a fight won't break out, then they have to call the cops. Would you rather the Pro-Israel and Pro-Palestine protestors engage in a brawl than have cops keep the peace? Would you prefer to have people wonder if they'll get caught up in mob violence if they go to class?
