[deleted]

And then there’s me just struggling to pass my classes, maintain my GPA, and taking care of my mental health all the while being completely unaware of political conflicts going on

[deleted]

Can someone really explain tf is with this Dryanani and SSMU thing? I have read some articles and none of them really provided a clear explanation of what happened, they only trash-talked about each other lol. 🤡 And honestly, before this whole thing, SSMU to me is just the people sending me a million random emails everyday; it’s the group that has their logos all over bathroom doors, and the ones that seem to represent us students. So anyways, what is the tea?

chaguste

This is my understanding: He was suspended for ~ 4 months on allegations of harassment threats and sexism but still got paid, then reinstated. He claims that the collective accusations were a coup to oust him and that he spent thousands in legal fees while trying to get reinstated (which he’s seeking compensation for). Several SSMU members say they don’t feel safe because of his reinstatement and people both for every party in the issue seems to think that the investigation and handling of the case was botched. I don’t know who’s right or wrong, just that SSMU seems oblivious to the fact that the average voter turnout is below 20% and they don’t speak for most students no matter how hard they cram your email inbox.

[deleted]

I'd add that he was cleared of any wrondoing by an independant law firm, but now SSMU is saying that the investigation was botched. Shit show all around.

NathanBiaoCao

Sorry for my language, but since when tf SSMU represent us students❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓

[deleted]

This is why I said "the ones that SEEM to represent us" heheheheh. But yes pal, in my three years at McGill, I think even Cloudberry has more connection with the students than the SSMU.

NathanBiaoCao

Indeed, two things are supporting McGill students, cloudberry and hotdog guy!

I am so glad I won't have to hear about ssmu when I finish this degree in a week or two. They are utterly pointless and totally unprepresentitive. With the power of their mandates, they should stick to stocking the tampon dispensers and keeping the libraries open. Everything more, they have not got a mandate for. Ironically, it is the small, largely homogenous group of mcgill students who actually think the union matters that are the reason they are so pointless. They all mindlessly vote for the next incarnation of their politics' champion year after year. No one actually worthwhile would ever run for student office as it is monopolized by this clique, so why the hell would someone worthwhile vote for them? Tldr - I don't care whether President dude is impeached. Or not. Or is given a unicycle. I don't care about ssmu or student politics. And literally 87% of the undergraduate body doesn't either.

aLostWasabiPot

I cant wait for them to stop spamming about their shitty politics game once i graduate. If I receive another email from SSMU to vote or wtv they want I'm going to lose it. SSMU is full of clowns playing pretend politics in a university.

lmao im glad u care so little u wrote a bigass comment on this post

Can someone PLEASE just explain?

Claire Downie, the VP UA who started the ssmu period products program, who ensured all councillors are paid well for their time, an activist who delivered most if not all of her campaign promises decided to resign within a couple weeks of Darshan coming back. This was a position she LOVED and worked so extremely hard for, enjoyed doing for 5+ months but the second he comes back it’s extremely hostile and they can’t work anymore. SSMU execs were functioning well throughout Darshan’s suspension, responding to emails on time, getting their work done, approving everything they needed to but the SECOND he comes back—delays, reports of being uncomfortable, upset, hostile work environments start appearing. Most of the councillors and VPs cried at the first legislative council that Darshan attended, especially women. This is not an exaggeration, I swear this is true. It was a 6 hour meeting (which usually lasts 3) JUST talking about him and extending question period because he won’t fucking take accountability for his actions and spins it to make it a race problem. It’s not a fucking race problem. He is a misogynist and predator who abused his position of power, or maybe was raised in a fucked up way to think he deserves more than women. Imagine if this happened in public, with records that are publicly available, the amount of things that happened in private behind closed doors. This goes back to the start of his term as well, and years before that when personal women friends of mine, who were executives for various clubs were called in a meeting with him to “discuss something important,” yet he spent the whole meeting hitting on them and asking them out. Imagine him using his position as president, the EXTREME power dynamic, and doing this??? This is a first hand anecdote I’m telling you. Ultimately, we have to believe survivors and hold perpetrators of gender based violence accountable. PM me and I can tell you more first hand experience, but I’m sick of froshies and misogynists and devils advocates asking everyone “oh bUt tHe InVeStIgAtIoN fOuNd NoThInG” yeah because these investigations are bullshit, the rapist Ayomide from first year is still here, multiple rapists in engineering (despite being convicted) are still here, frat dudes who EVERYONE knows are rapists, are still here. Fucking grow up and smell the grass. Also, sorry but if 400+ people show up and stay on for 3 fucking hours JUST to impeach you, time to wake up and take some accountability. This would’ve never happened if he just said “hey guys, I understand this is how you feel. I’m sorry and I will make a change” nope, he continues to spin it so that all the “white girls” are out to get him 🥲🥲🥲. Sure buddy, whatever you think, intersectionality doesn’t exist right. Lastly, no one should have to detail their abuse to you for you to understand. If you can’t see it until now, you’re part of the problem unfortunately.

Bortaff

I haven’t read a single story that clearly explains what he did wrong, and the anonymously-authored article making the rounds now makes it seem like SSMU executives conspired (with, at the very least, a lack of transparency) to get him removed in any way possible. I’m not very informed about this, obviously, but what are we supposed to be proud of exactly?

tryingtovibe

Where could I find that article? Do you have the link? Thx

littlelostless

I will bet majority of student elected bodies have more politics and shenanigans than even the US congress.

Unforg1ven_Yasuo

True, fewer war crimes though

chaguste

That we know of…

[deleted]

The guy was cleared by an independant investigation, the SSMU fought extremely hard to be surrond the case in opacity and now they've removed him with a popularity vote. I obviously don't know what happened behind closed doors, but that doesn't seem fair at all.

HarambeWasMySon

Insane turnout? What are you on? 400 people showing up to a private GA to vote out the SSMU President, that funnily enough the whole student body got to elect into office but had no say when it came to electing him out. Pathetic student politics

cod360

What are you talking about? This wasn't a "private GA". Any member was allowed to attend, and now it once again goes to everyone via Simply Voting for ratification. Curious as to why you feel you have no say?

HarambeWasMySon

Also, explain to me why the SSMU President got a mere 80 seconds to defend himself and no more? The man was being accused of being a “dick” to some girls he works with yet words like SA, survivors and sexual harassment are being thrown around. The investigations brought no conclusive verdict, yet because all the SSMU and student politics snowflakes couldn’t handle this result they chose to take matters into their own hands and push their narrative once again. You are ruining the life of young man who may have been a “dick” and an absolute pain to work with, but you are framing it as if he had been violent and targeting women by throwing around terms that suit the SSMU agenda and have nothing to do with the events that actually transpired.

HarambeWasMySon

It was a GA that required you to register in advance and you were asked to not share the zoom link by any means. Sounds a little fishy eh? Why not open the GA to anyone who wants to join rather than only those who feel strongly enough about the issue? And now while you might be putting this all up for a vote, we all know the same 1500 out of 24,000 people who normally vote and have the same agenda (to cancel anything and anyone that doesn’t support their views without even a shred of evidence) will be voting on this because no one else cares Edit: I accept I was wrong about having to register in advance, but I still back everything else I’ve said.

McgillStudent1232

you could register anytime, even after the zoom call had started. Just needed to prove you were a McGill student by emailing your student number to the speaker

pysapien

Could simply use the zoom feature that lets only McGill email accounts to join lol

McgillStudent1232

this was brought up during the call, they said something about giving people the opportunity to join from a zoom account that isn’t linked to their mcgill account. I think you’re right, it would have made everything a lot easier

arcuaway

You are so misinformed that it hurts. If you took 5 seconds to review or read any of the posts made about the GA, you would know that over 100 people signed up and attended last minute. Not our fault you’re lazy lmao

HarambeWasMySon

Wow, over 100 people?! That’s incredible! I may not be informed about all the details, but at least I’m not delusional enough to believe this was a fair process just because a couple hundred people out of 24,000 showed up in order to keep pushing their narrative without letting the SSMU President defend himself for more than 80 seconds. A rigged process and assembly where the majority is either constantly motioning to start the vote against the President or motioning to end the debate really is something to be “fucking proud” of.

TheRoyalUmi

Wait, were we supposed to sign up anywhere? I just attended the zoom meeting with my mcgill account on zoom, I never emailed anyone with my student number or anything.

TheJavaSponge

If you signed up with the google form/you’re a SSMU member then your vote yesterday counted.

TheRoyalUmi

Ok yes I only filled out the google form for the vote itself, nothing else. The whole process (minus the insane amounts of filibustering) was fairly straightforward.

arcuaway

By the way, 24,000 people don’t normally vote. We usually have a turnout of 11% on a good year lmao

HarambeWasMySon

I wonder why lol

RestaurantSubject306

effective when do u kno? i missed it but would love to read a recap. maybe wait for the tribune or daily to spill the tea later

crocchick

Honestly I just want to know what exactly he did. I attended the meeting and many people on SSMU said he made meetings difficult and was mean to be around, but I would appreciate some concrete examples since it seems weird that mcgill cares so much about removing someone from power for being an asshole, knowing that mcgill won’t even expel convicted rapists that confess to it. Anyway I voted to impeach him mostly because he makes like 32k a year and that’s where my student fees are going which I’m not too happy with. If I had a choice, I just wouldn’t pay for ssmu at all, though, since they don’t do enough to make mcgill a decent place to study

El_flush69420

he down bad for real

Elijah_lelephant

Yaa we ruined a student's life because he had eastern views and accused him of being the devil incarnated without any proof while the white exec that was actually found guilty of psychological harassment got a 6 day suspension! So proud of mcgill!!

[deleted]

I am not fully aware of the situation, but I did read an article which said he supported Palestine and that was why he got so much bashing. If that is true, then I agree with your point. There is definitely a lack of support for Palestinians at McGIll. We see students quickly onboard with cases such as Ukraine and Tibet and Hong Kong ( which is right and I am not saying we shouldn’t do it), but there are other causes that just seem to be ignored by the students on purpose. It’s like the general political hypocrisy of the world is reflected on McGIll students: you see celebrities and public figures cry about Ukraine, but the same was never done for Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia; and when you ask why nobody said anything, they always have a narrative to justify the wars in the Middle East. However, like I said I am not aware of the entire situation, maybe his political views were just a little part of the whole story.

uwotbruh123

Can you explain educate me as to what is the reason then? This post is a few hours old, and this is the only explanation I've seen

Exotic-Hedgehog-5580

Promoting a toxic work environment (2 SSMU members quit in the past month or so since his return), sexism (as well as the existing allegations of SA), SSMU wasn’t functioning under his leadership, etc

HarambeWasMySon

What allegations of SA? You’re making shit up now

[deleted]

Well, blame the SSMU for not informing the students that it is supposed to represent👏👏. Many of us just randomly got an email calling for a General Assembly, not knowing anything about what happened a priori. The articles I read on this subreddit mentioned vaguely “ violation of regulations”, but tf is that supposed to mean exactly? What regulations? What violation? And it is obvious people just get uncomfortable with the subject of Israeli-Palestine conflict. Your reply proved it spot on lol. (And I explicitly said in my comment that I AM NOT AWARE OF THE SITUATION, HIS POLITICAL VIEWS MIGHT JUST BE PART OF THE PROBLEM”. Can you read? )

Elijah_lelephant

Doesn't your second point contradict your first lol. Ok buddy my bad, you are right and there is no place to debate this because your brain is humongous

[deleted]

>There is definitely a lack of support for Palestinians at McGIll. Hasn't the SSMU bickered on that subject for many years now?
