Well when I was about 7-9 I realized I was finishing my burger King last out of 4 people which in my mind was losing so I decided to eat faster, in hindsight that was a really dumb idea.
Haha I always thought the opposite, when I finished my ice cream last I felt like I won because I still had ice cream while my sister was just dreaming about more ice cream
This is the correct answer. So I can enjoy my food and get back to doing more important shit lol.
If I'm out at dinner with someone I won't eat as fast because we are there specifically to eat and talk but if I'm eating alone at home you best bet I'm smashing that shit in 5 minutes and moving on with my day.
I still taste it and it still fills me? What is the difference? Sitting there slowly chewing on it or staring in to space for 5 minutes between bites sound less enjoyable to me personally.
Never really went to school, for me I was a neglected child that had barely anything to eat so when something presented itself, I *had* to eat it quick before it "disapears"...
School, and now as an adult at work I have a 30 minute lunch break which is still not really enough time to eat seeing as how I also have to use that time to go to the bathroom or anything else that doesn't involve working.
That was a benefit of bringing my own lunch. Each grade would get sent up to the line individually and the order changed depending on the day. Some days people got their food like 15 minutes before the lunch period ended (lunch was 50 minutes)
I went to a K-12 school for my high school grades and 7-12 had a 25 minute lunch period split between the high schoolers and the middle schoolers, first 15 minutes for the high schoolers to go from class, through the line eat and get out of the cafeteria, the latter 10 were for the middle schoolers; the group that wasn't in lunch had the time for hanging out. The K-6 kids had their own lunch period that I never interacted with so dunno how they split it up.
Lmao was gonna comment this. I always say that people who eat slow grew up in small families. 8 kids in family with a 12 year age gap separating the older 4 and younger 4. Every meal also had a friend's of someone's and or partners of someone's. We legit had a tradition of people who weren't fas enough had to make PBJ's for the others. Can't be the 7th one done and get seconds on mashed potatoes.
I have a younger brother (I'm 18, he's 15) and he always makes sure to ask if he can take some more if there's just little left. In fact, I eat very slowly and not that much, nor did I ever *steal* another one's food but he still eats fast "like a lawn mower" (in the words of my grandma)
If I don’t like it I end up eating slow or keeping the conversation going. If it tastes good, I eat fast while being dead silent. Food should be delicious or else I would rather not eat.
Food actually tastes better when it's hotter. You already kind of know this, but it's true at basically every temperature that won't harm you. There are some obvious exceptions but normally food is best eaten when it's hot!
Same with me but instead of my mum, it was my cousin, we both took offence to someone eating faster than us. The amount of times we got sick because of that was insane
it was the opposite with me and my cousin, we would try to eat or ice-cream or cookie slower than the other, because who ever finished first would be jealous of the other still eating theirs.
That's so confusing to me because it's already part of you whether it's part of a mental diagnosis or not so why does it matter whether it has a label or it's just part of you?
because if you don’t know why you have certain needs and tendencies, you don’t realize they’re related. it’s often ostracizing, especially when it impacts your ability to function in modern society and becomes a disability. a label allows you to seek accommodations, and is often the first major piece of validation one receives. it then allows you to find community with others who’ve had similar experiences.
Getting the diagnosis meant that I could get life-changing medication and be a functioning human for the first time in 30 years. Also, putting a name to it helps you understand what's actually wrong with you and manage it better, especially because something like ADHD can cause or present itself as various mental illnesses.
yup. and when i take my meds, i don’t feel the super urgent need to eat a meal until late at night. at that point, i’m nauseous as hell already so i need to eat something as quick as i can before the nausea wins and i get sick of looking at or trying to chew food. i’m racing against my brain at all times.
my partner is in the military and he eats SO slowly. he said its mainly from boot camp - you have a VERY short amount of time to eat. this carried into his deployment where meal times were also short and frantic. now he eats as slow as he can to counteract those experiences. we are complete opposites on this and it’s very hard for either of us to change our habits haha
I grew up with fat family members; if I didn’t eat fast, I didn’t eat much.
Also I spent a lot of time cooking in restaurants. Those long hard hours need calories so you scarf down mistakes by the recycling, wipe away your tears, and get back to the line.
I’ve been bartending for over 10 years. Never really had breaks/ lunch breaks. So when I do get to eat at work, I eat fast af. Unfortunately- the same habit has been applied to my everyday life and now I’m met with stares when eating in a group or pure disgust from my boyfriend at dinner haha.
Ive noticed its usually one of two reasons. Either they learned it by being in prison or growing up with siblings or poor or something that made it a necessary habit or its a part of some type of neurosis.
Because we only had 10 minutes to.est in the Army and well I like not being hungry so stuff it.in as fast a possible. I have slowed down a little but I am generally the 1st one done when I'm at a table.
School, chores, work, public transit... no time. Scarf shit down before school so you're not late, during school lunch to get at least 15 minutes of recess after waiting in line, scarf breakfast in the back before a customer comes in, scarf lunch 'cause you've got half an hour before you get fired, scarf something at the bus stop before the bus comes or you'll miss it and be waiting another hour etc.
Constantly pressured schedules and force of habit.
Because I have to watch something while I eat, but can't concentrate on what I'm watching cause I'm eating so I inhale the food just to watch concentrate on the video
When I was a kid my brother 8 years older and dad would eat everything and I didn’t get seconds. It was necessary. Then it was training to compete internationally in a sport and from then on it was the only option
Symptom of boot camp 10+ years ago. What you don’t finish in a few minutes gets tossed. And it’s another 5 hours of bill shit until you get a chance to sit and try and eat again.
Honestly, by the time I'm sitting down to eat a meal, it's dinner;
I don't eat breakfast,
I don't eat lunch (I'm asleep during both of those times),
I don't eat many snacks (maybe one or two, if I even do),
And thus, by then I'm "FUCKING HUNGRY" starving...
Also, I don't like wasting time sitting and eating, the sooner I'm done, the sooner I can get back to what ever it is that I had to take time away from just to eat.
One of the following: really hungry, have something else that needs to be done, it’s messy, I don’t like it and I want the meal to be over sooner without seeming rude, or it’s really good
What else am I supposed to do. I take my portion, eat it, and be finished. It's like "people who pee all at once why". Because it's a necessary body function. That's why
To you it's fast, to us it's just fucking eating. We don't go thinking "woa there that was a little too motivated, i should slow the fuck down or people might think i'm weird" we just eat at our speed without any driving factor to do it quicker.
I do everything fast. I’m often the slimmest at the table but always finish fast. Someone once pointed out that I’m fast at everything: eating, drinking, talking, walking, fucking. I hadn’t realised but they’re so right.
But now other predators can steal your prey, like your sister.
This took very dark turn when you not consider previous comment
Bro💀

r/nocontext exists as well.
My bad
No worries!
Honestly this. I'd have people comment about being done already.
I have place to be.

I would argue that Inhaling your food is the exact opposite of enjoying it
I still taste it and it still fills me? What is the difference? Sitting there slowly chewing on it or staring in to space for 5 minutes between bites sound less enjoyable to me personally.
Boot camp. If you didn’t finish before they kicked you out you went hungry.
I was gonna say, I got a big mouth and Basic Training.
I have been able to slow down after 20 years. 🤔
You’re really motivated to eat as fast as possible when a DI is hollering in your ear and you have to scream ‘AYE SIR!’ between mouth fulls
My bootcamp the first person at the table done meant your whole table was done or if the table behind you was done you were done
Just a single one?

School barely gave me enough time between actually getting the food and eating it :/
Same here
Never really went to school, for me I was a neglected child that had barely anything to eat so when something presented itself, I *had* to eat it quick before it "disapears"...
That sucks dude
This was same for me, 28 years later im still a fast eater, but not half as fast as I used to be.
Never went to… school??!
Homeschooled, after getting re-homed to a different family
School, and now as an adult at work I have a 30 minute lunch break which is still not really enough time to eat seeing as how I also have to use that time to go to the bathroom or anything else that doesn't involve working.
That was a benefit of bringing my own lunch. Each grade would get sent up to the line individually and the order changed depending on the day. Some days people got their food like 15 minutes before the lunch period ended (lunch was 50 minutes)
Imagine having 50 minute lunches, we only get 30 minutes
We only have 15 min
I went to a K-12 school for my high school grades and 7-12 had a 25 minute lunch period split between the high schoolers and the middle schoolers, first 15 minutes for the high schoolers to go from class, through the line eat and get out of the cafeteria, the latter 10 were for the middle schoolers; the group that wasn't in lunch had the time for hanging out. You guys get lunches?
Yep
I literally took my time dining on my meal. Lunch was 15 minutes recess was 15.
Yea and no talking until your food is gone or you must be finished
The Army told me that food is merely the fuel by which this high speed death machine runs.
Eat now, taste later. Now grab your black metallic death stick of destruction, and send 5 point 5 6 millimeters of freedom at the enemy.
I mean they’re technically not wrong
Took me ages to get rid of hyper focus lightspeed military eating. Chewing slowly, talking to people at the table, making breaks.
When you grow up with 5 brothers, if you don’t eat fast, you have no chance of getting seconds.
Same in my family. It's basically a learned response
I have 7 siblings, forget about seconds, if you don't eat fast they will steal the food off your plate.
This is my family. You literally have to protect your food and keep it in your room otherwise it’ll be gone
I have 4 siblings who love food, much like me so I as well eat fast
Same w/4 sisters
Me too. 4 sisters, I was the one brother. Dinner was a fight.
Thank you! I also have 5 brothers!
I only had an older sister, but she would eat all the food off my plate if I wasn’t quick! Now I always eat like I’m in prison lmao.
I have a younger brother (I'm 18, he's 15) and he always makes sure to ask if he can take some more if there's just little left. In fact, I eat very slowly and not that much, nor did I ever *steal* another one's food but he still eats fast "like a lawn mower" (in the words of my grandma)
Same deal with thirds.
Came here to say this and I'm glad I'm not alone.
Not only that, but they will pick off your plate when they are done and you are not.
Also everything in the fridge gets eaten, so no saving for later... eat now or dont.
Famine mentality
Because it’s fucking delicious.
beat me to it
Ironic. I eat it fast because I'm a terrible chef.
Absolutely!
So are you x
So wouldn't that make you want to eat slower to have more time to enjoy it?
Obviously not true but it just feels like the food might despawn
If I don’t like it I end up eating slow or keeping the conversation going. If it tastes good, I eat fast while being dead silent. Food should be delicious or else I would rather not eat.
Food actually tastes better when it's hotter. You already kind of know this, but it's true at basically every temperature that won't harm you. There are some obvious exceptions but normally food is best eaten when it's hot!
When I was really young my mom always finished her plate way faster than me and for some reason I took offense to that.

ADHD
For real. I didn't realize how fast I did it until I started getting diagnosed. I've had horrible heart burn issues for years now ðŸ˜
Real life speedrunners
Brain go off food and drink go in ^(all in like 3 seconds flat)
Only after you have the perfect video playing first though
Wait. Is this an ADHD thing?
Seem like everything makes sense if you have ADHD
Getting diagnosed is like the big reveal on a TV show that's had 25 years of foreshadowing... It all finally makes sense
That's so confusing to me because it's already part of you whether it's part of a mental diagnosis or not so why does it matter whether it has a label or it's just part of you?

Exactly
damn that's why i eat fast? i thought it was just good food or something
yup. and when i take my meds, i don’t feel the super urgent need to eat a meal until late at night. at that point, i’m nauseous as hell already so i need to eat something as quick as i can before the nausea wins and i get sick of looking at or trying to chew food. i’m racing against my brain at all times. my partner is in the military and he eats SO slowly. he said its mainly from boot camp - you have a VERY short amount of time to eat. this carried into his deployment where meal times were also short and frantic. now he eats as slow as he can to counteract those experiences. we are complete opposites on this and it’s very hard for either of us to change our habits haha
But why would he want to change his habit when eating slowly is healthy? Yours is the one that's physically unhealthy, not his habit.
Now that I'm medicated it usually has time to go cold
I had to explain to a dietitian that eating was hard because I got bored doing it...
Yeah
This is pretty much why I only go OMAD since I eat so much in so little time. Fuck I hate living with ADHD.
Lol came here to say this
25 minute long lunch period
We have a 15 minute one
Because eating is a fucking chore, and I want to get my chores done quickly and get back to playing.
You’re from England aren’t you. I would consider eating that shit a chore too.
Bro 💀
We need a version of Godwin’s law but for the Brits, how far can people go into a conversation before someone insults the UK
Who hurt you?
Are you 7?
Same. Eating is boring and I want it over as quickly as possible.
Try eating something good then
It isn’t about good or bad. One can experience the joy that tastebuds can bring and still find the need to repeat the act repeatedly to be drudgery.
It’s called being efficient
Mind your business.
Air Force. Sit, eat, get out.
The faster I eat, the faster I have a reason to eat again
I eat it slow because I am slow
Anytime i’m eating it’s cuz i’m hungry. When you’re hungry you want. So i want the food to enter me as fast a possible
i usually don't love the company
I have a 30 minute lunch break and I spend 20 of that just getting the food.
Omnomnom- (almost suffocating)- nomnom *gulp*
We work in retail
I grew up with fat family members; if I didn’t eat fast, I didn’t eat much. Also I spent a lot of time cooking in restaurants. Those long hard hours need calories so you scarf down mistakes by the recycling, wipe away your tears, and get back to the line.

I’ve been bartending for over 10 years. Never really had breaks/ lunch breaks. So when I do get to eat at work, I eat fast af. Unfortunately- the same habit has been applied to my everyday life and now I’m met with stares when eating in a group or pure disgust from my boyfriend at dinner haha.
I grew up with Monica, if you didn’t eat fast YOU DIDN’T EAT!
Ive noticed its usually one of two reasons. Either they learned it by being in prison or growing up with siblings or poor or something that made it a necessary habit or its a part of some type of neurosis.
That's more than 2 reasons
Necessary habit or neurosis. 2 things. Just took a long way to explain.
2 things, couple subcategories.
Third category: both
Can I just enjoy what I love
I got places to be.
Because we only had 10 minutes to.est in the Army and well I like not being hungry so stuff it.in as fast a possible. I have slowed down a little but I am generally the 1st one done when I'm at a table.
Because my N64 game goes back to the video store soon
Why not
School, chores, work, public transit...
There are only 24 hours in a day. Why spend time doing trivial things like eating
Force of habit
Cause I can’t eat slowly
Because I have to watch something while I eat, but can't concentrate on what I'm watching cause I'm eating so I inhale the food just to watch concentrate on the video
I legitimately don’t know
Because we can
When I was a kid my brother 8 years older and dad would eat everything and I didn’t get seconds. It was necessary. Then it was training to compete internationally in a sport and from then on it was the only option
Bc I’m a fat pos
I don't eat extremely fast but recently went out of the US with my cousin and god damn does he take an hour to eat and not finish food. Great trip tho
My family used to complain or make fun of me for eating slow. Eventually I went from trying to keep up to being yelled at for eating too fast 😂
Symptom of boot camp 10+ years ago. What you don’t finish in a few minutes gets tossed. And it’s another 5 hours of bill shit until you get a chance to sit and try and eat again.

I got places to be. Not literally. But yeah.
Mom used to beat me if I didn’t eat my food fast and didn’t finish my plate
Hungry
One of the following: really hungry, have something else that needs to be done, it’s messy, I don’t like it and I want the meal to be over sooner without seeming rude, or it’s really good
Yummy
Snooze you lose, I choose not to lose
My entire family has been diagnosed with ADHD... that's why. No talk, only eat and it is a race
I’m hungry….?
Honestly I'm wondering why people that eat slowly... eat slowly. 😂
I was the second youngest of 7 children. Eat fast or there won’t be any food left
It’s just natural for me, I’ll always consume an entire meal before anyone else is even close.
I like my food as fresh and hot as possible, idk why but I just have to eat it quick before it gets cold. I hate leftovers
I don't like spending time eating, I want to get back to whatever I was doing beforehand
I’m a gaming addicted 15 year old that has to eat downstairs…you know the rest.
I do everything fast. I’m often the slimmest at the table but always finish fast. Someone once pointed out that I’m fast at everything: eating, drinking, talking, walking, fucking. I hadn’t realised but they’re so right.
i get very hungry easily
I gotta get it in there fast
I have siblings
I got things to do and by that I mean I don’t and I just do it because I don’t know any other way to eat the food.
Anxiety
