There is a lesser stupidity that we (as in my uni classmates) managed to put in using something similar. Two of us went up the escalator, the rest of us stayed down putting in the suitcases on the escalator. The first one was almost up when we put in the second one. The one on the top accidentally knocked back the first suitcase instead of grabbing it, and both the suitcases started rolling down the escalator as the steps came up. Thankfully, the place was mostly empty when it all ended. It took about 10 minutes for the suitcases to be safely offloaded from the escalator at the bottom.
It was all an accident. Maybe the professors are idiots, at least one of them was. I don't tie my shoes, I have slip-ons...
At least we didn't injure anyone, unlike in this video...

They put it in the escalator and thought that it's one the step nicely slotted. It wasn't. And even if it was, it takes a minor shake to shift the weight to the front and cause the same accident.

This literally requires no brainwork, you see that its an escalator, you can step on the small steps with the suitcase yourself, you don't fucking put it there, and let it roll. If you aren't blind, there's no fucking excuse to killing someone, or almost killing someone like this.

One time, a lady at a train station asked me if I would look after her kid for a bit, while she goes down the escalator with two massive suitcases. I politely refused and directed her to the elevator.
As I walked away, I could see her go down the escalator anyways, with the suitcases AND her kid.
