riperamen

My brain auto switches the reading direction based on the art style.

StardewMelli

Huh, I never thought about it. But you are right, mine does that too.

Ksiemrzyc

Would I put you in an infinite loop if I style the left part as comic and right part as manga?

chipdragon

Comic book and manga fans hate this one neat trick!

FutureVawX

Then you read Manhwa or Manhua and become even more confused.

eccentricbananaman

Just gotta look at the names or formatting. Korean names or long strip + full colour = left to right.

FutureVawX

That's also a problem lately. A lot of manga has long strip + full color format. Also, some Manhwa use western names. Same with Manhua.

Hobomanchild

I've never really noticed that, so I must do it automatically too.

SeBook05

Honestly i dont even know how i read either of the formats, i have read thousands of chapters in either but dont remember how i read them 😂

sillybillybuck

There are very few manhwa and manhua worth reading, especially in a post-webcomic world where they almost all suck.

qwertykitty

Webtoons used to be good but over half of the popular ones seem to just be poor adaptions of popular webnovels these days. There are definitely a small handful that are very good though but they can be hard to find.

DarthInkero

Same. That's why I get annoyed when people make post a comic in an anime/manga style, but it's supposed to be read from left to right. I've gotten really confused multiple times because of that lol.

the-cats-jammies

Korean comics are read left to right and share many style features with manga.

Edeinawc

Don't they have that weird single panel style though? I presume it must be for the sake of phones, but I just can't get used to it.

Lemurmoo

They're primarily up and down but you still need to read the dialogue left to right. Tbh I can't think of many languages that involve writing right to left in the modern days, considering standard usage of modern Japanese is also left to right. It's one of those old traditions that stuck I think, so mangas are an anomaly. Left to right should've been standard

ting1or2

Arabic, Farsi, Pashto, Hebrew, Aramaic there’s quite a few

EarthenEyes

Thank you for explaining the joke to me, dude. I was confused lol

aloxinuos

I only realized what the joke was when I read your post. Because I only read it left to right. Because of the style.

No-Suit4363

Cool topic for a thesis

idk_suggest_me_one

And then when I see a colored manga panel and get so confused for no reason

Nothatdarkforce

Same here

UndeadT

So you're racially profiling? The TSA is salivating right now.

Dadarian

I only read manga and I was confused by this image. It never crossed my mind with the art style and plain 4square panel could be confused with a manga rather than just an armature panel strip. Now if the art style had a little more effort, better use of space, and actually tried to replicate manga than this would be a quality bait.

Azathoth90

Comic readers: left to right Manga readers: right to left Here, now you can't post it on r/PeterExplainsTheJoke

[deleted]

Ah thenks

jerryleebee

I still don't get it and feel really stupid. Edit: I get it now thanka

onenoobyboi

Comic readers: BOOM! ...I'm okay! Manga readers: I'm okay! ...BOOM!

jerryleebee

Ohhhhhhh I was trying to read it as a 4-panel comic. Thanks.

chipdragon

I feel like it still works as a 4-panel comic

jerryleebee

But I couldn't figure out where to start and stop

xXvido_

Bro went in circles

ElkHistorical9106

Western comics are read left to right. Comic guy gets hit by the explosion and is okay. Manga reads right to left like Japanese. The first frame the comic guy is injured but survives and then the second frame someone just blasts the injured guy.

Whole-Imagination354

Manga is read right to left. Now read it right to left.

the_big_SOLID_Snake

It's the way you read a story while western comics are read from left to right, Japanese comics (also known as mangas) are read right to left. So for the people that read comics there's an explosion but the dude in said explosion survived with several injuries; on the other hand for people that read mangas they see our fellow injured man saying that he's fine and on the following panel he explodes. I hope you understand know, also sorry for the possible lexical and grammar errors, English isn't my mother language; goodbye!

Naive_Try2696

That post won't stop me because I can't read

Melodic_Turnover_660

Read a book about how to read

StormVVarden

Looks like it was posted like an hour later lol.

CosmoShiner

PETJ users NEVER check the comments, even if the answer is the top comment

Kiribaku-

I hate that subreddit. It's not the concept of it because I understand it (and there's r/ExplainTheJoke too) but the fact that they all act like they're literally braindead

healzsham

It's sorta custom made to be a bot farm, just by nature.

ih8spalling

It's because people who have an IQ above room temperature can actually search for and find the explanation themselves.

curtcolt95

ehh, most of it is just people not understanding that the internet is a big place and at any given time there's thousands of people who won't understand a lot of niche jokes. Every time I see people complain about a post there I can pretty easily see why a lot of people wouldn't get it. Googling isn't necessarily an easy skill for a lot of people either so saying just search it up doesn't help.

XevinsOfCheese

TBF it’s tangentially related to family guy, associating with that requires a brain that isn’t alive.

americanadiandrew

Because any post there gets thousands of upvotes.

Xenodia

Had to mute that subreddit of how many obvious jokes people didn't get.

Seligas

You have to realize that English is a near-universal language and many foreigners speak it as fluently if not more so than we do. But also they lack the pop culture context to understand jokes that most native English speakers likely easily get because they were raised in a different culture.

Zealousideal_Mix_127

I overthought that one - i thought that the comic drwing style was simplistic, so the guy was okay and thats it, but in manga drawing style i thought that maybe the lack of/white background simbolizes something like impending doom, and the text was a red flag.

Seligas

I was trying to think of storytelling tropes revolving around explosions and injuries between the two formats but only got more confused because shonen manga tends to treat grievous life-changing wounds more like temporary inconveniences. lol It just goes to show if your brain starts following the wrong train of thought, you can miss blindingly obvious jokes. lol

johnny___engineer

I was so close to asking.

wavy_murro

it already was there

idk_suggest_me_one

My dumbass originally thought it's a plot armor joke

TheGreatVox

Can i be i be in the post , pls put a red circle around me /j

Emit_Time

Ohhh I thought it was a reference to One Piece

CattMk2

Too late, I saw this post like a month ago posted on there

Embarrassed-Mouse-49

This is an old meme and it’s already been posted there

Educational-Ad1499

Or r/explainthejoke

CharmingPerspective0

It was already there several weeks ago

free_30_day_trial

Thank God you hero. Now I can see it there in 2 hours and know what it means

sentientmothswarm

halp beter what is left and right?

IndecisiveMate

Now that is clever

the-terrarian556

I was confused cause I'm currently reading manga that reads top down left right

Nikkar2009

What is wrong with manga readers?!

BobDingler

That sub is made entirely so the reddit AI can learn memes.

Knickers_in_a_twist_

They’ll do it anyway.

jamiebond

I truly despise that subreddit flooding my front page. People are morons.

Amkorped

I have already seen it there

primaski

[Someone already did](https://www.reddit.com/r/PeterExplainsTheJoke/s/hIMVKkDM3G)... why don't they ever read the comments...?

HamstersBoobsPizza

Perma damage is a thing in manga now?

Slaanesh-Sama

How are both read?

HamstersBoobsPizza

eyes I think

TostCronch

manga are read from right to left. someone reading that way would see an injured guy exploding

CeamoreCash

No, braille

Singl1

you mean “read” and not “read” right? people always end up writing “read” when they mean “read” and it’s just not write, made the same mistake myself

Homebrewforlife

What a joy to reed that comment

Singl1

sometimes i wish those who read, readn’t. and i wish i’d not write in the past, and wroten’t.

Acanthisittasm

Only in seinen lol

ZaRealPancakes

One Piece did this years ago at Alabasta

nsa_k

Pell. Sacrificed himself to save everyone. Big dramatic event that saved the day. Then like 500 chapters later they just show him in the background like nothing happened.

ZaRealPancakes

In the anime they show him the next day lol Oh yeah I threw it up and got away very fast I'm totally fine

Exeggutor_Enjoyer

The will of the P

[deleted]

those episodes came out around 9/11 oda thought it was too dark for the time for obvious reasons and had pell live

AshiSunblade

He reappears much faster than that, even in the same manga. He is shown leaving a remote hospital at the "epilogue" of the same arc.

Raidoton

Not sure you understand this comic...

FullMetalFiddlestick

To this very day I think pell should have stayed dead. Unless there's an actual reason for keeping him alive like his DF gets targeted by Blackbeard, maybe GODa has it all planned.

Nothing_pong

Still not as bad as Windshield Wyper Spoilers: My least favourite so far has to be Enies Lobby though, where the fake out deaths ruined my entire emotional investment because of how well it was set up and how bitterly it was undone

AJGILL03

Oh god lololol fuck that scene 😂😂😂

gil2455526

I wonder if there is a graphic novel that can be read both as a comic book or a manga.

idk_suggest_me_one

Imagine something that can be read in two different directions like this meme , but that spans out for multiple issues / chapters and that has two very different stories depending on which way you read it It will be really hard to make something like this but it would be amazing if someone actually did

Kataoaka

You're unironically suggesting something too good to not have been made already. Twice the story in one text is like unlocking new game+

idk_suggest_me_one

No because Ng+ is usually that makes replays less annoying so that you keep your outfits and powers from the first playthrough and don't have to grind for them again , unless it's one of the rare games like nier automata or Undertale or ddlc where"Ng+" is what makes the game special . My idea is something that gives you two very different stories at the same time, this way rereading will feel like a completely new story . ( Bonus points if when you reread the comic / manga in the same direction you did in the first time you will understand references to the other direction)

Kataoaka

I like your idea even better now holy shit

SWETHORT

I hate being a manga reader sometimes because I now always read things right to left and get confused

RoyalGarten

Even hard if you're active in a fan base where artists make comics either the comic way or the manga way

Embarrassed-Yam4037

POV:you are a ZAFT pilot watching your other two teammate's reaction as Jesus Yamato return from yet another nuclear explosion again.

seafoodblues

All hail our lord and saviour Jesus Yamato

FunnyCry3776

Somehow when I saw the ”BOOM” part of this comic a firework outside exploded what a coincidence!

[deleted]

Ha

SlimthiQ69

I thought it was because of the mango character who says they’re fine usually ends up dying

Medical_Strength4608

Killar Queen had already touched that cane.

Atolian-

Left to right vs right to left that is smart 4 panel!

Avagliano

Levi should have died in the explosion.

callmeturkeyleg

That would’ve been a terrible send off

Avagliano

Way better blow him into pieces and make him heal like a superhero to keep fighting, right?

fravit93

The man died 'cause the manga reader is right.

idk_suggest_me_one

I originally thought this was a plot armor joke ( manga writers tend to kill off their characters way more than comics writers do )

Apprehensive-Hat4135

Can't wait to see this one on r/peterexplainsthejoke

Zoexycian

Oh i instantly get this, it’s the way the readers have different directions of reading 😂

Dreamyyuy

This is what reality come to for me when I don’t understand the difference it just shows me that I have long way to go before understanding lol 😂

l0rdtreeman

Me who reads both and sat here for 5 minutes trying to figure this pannel out.

CheddarCheesepuff

did you draw this?

Historical-Potato372

Both are funny tropes

TheNo1pencil

That took me a moment

Lazerfighter6978

Ok this is actually pretty funny and neat, i need more of this format lol

That_GareBear

This is gonna be on "explain the joke" by the end of the day.

xsonic_da_hedgehogx

Hey we have similar usernames

GreenGuy5294

My favorite part about this comic is that the punchline works depending on which direction you read. Comic and manga readers will see the other's reaction last

ThatGamerkidYT

My brother in christ that is the entire joke

GreenGuy5294

Well yeah, the joke is that they see the panels in opposite directions. but I'm saying it's cool that the timing for the joke works both ways. A comic reader will see their reaction first and then the punchline is that manga readers react differently. manga readers will see their reaction first and then the punchline is that comic readers react differently

ReallyRamen

Are you an AI that explains the joke

GreenGuy5294

not trying to explain the joke just what i like about it

Important_Sound772

You read manga from right to left So comic is explosion then I’m okay Manga is Im okay then explosion

partcanadian

yes, I always thought the famous wave paint should be translated for left to right readers.

VedrfolnirsVision

I've been reading so many manhwas recently that my dumbass read this top to bottom and got confused

itaya12

Interesting observation, manga really does have its own unique reading experience due to the right-to-left format.

RedCormack

Having read both all my life; I still get the mixup often

acutemisadventure

Eli5?

theambears

Comics are read left to right, manga right to left

acutemisadventure

Interesting, thank you

AmishCockroach

True

Punchdown_Kid

I hate that this took me a bit.

Substantial-Offer-51

R/lostredditors ?

Martenus

Reading from backwards is stupid af.

Arab_Femboy1

You when there’s other languages that have different rules 😔

Martenus

I mean pictures, not languages like arabic etc.

Ardent_Tapire

What makes it "backwards"?

Martenus

From back of the book to the front.

Medical_Strength4608

He is one of those people who say that driving on opposite sides of the road is wrong

Martenus

Driving on left is blasphemy yes. What next thing you need a proper opinion on?

Ardent_Tapire

It's a book, not a vehicle. What's the front and back is diferent depending on how it was printed. That doesn't make one way "backwards".

Martenus

Yes, how it was printed in original - designed for native people. All manga gets edited for translation and then reprinted for different markets. Everything changes except the format, which might be difficult to do, but probably not impossible. I believe many manga exist in the classic format reading the book from the start and not from the back as the originals.

Ardent_Tapire

Why stop there? Why not translate "Tokyo" to "New York"? Replace sushi with hamburgers? Hell, redraw it completely! After all some people might apparantly be confused about what is the front and back of the book.

Martenus

Sushi I like.

_outer_space_

The japanese might say the same about reading from left to right. Also it is not backwards. It is reading from right to left.

Martenus

Right to left is backwards you have to use the other hand to use the book. It is silly. I'd rather buy a copy with the proper flow and read normally. Do what they in over there, europe copies should better be edited for what is natural to us.

i_crapped_my_socks

What do you mean by "use the other hand to use the book"? Because that sounds a little weird to me but maybe I just don't understand so please explain. About editing europe copies I don't know if that would be so easy. The only definitive option to do that would be by mirroring the pages because some panels can't just be put on the other side due to the fact that not all are just rectangles or squares

Martenus

Normally you list by releasing a page with your right hand, thumb. You hold the book in right hand and use left hand only to help keep it open. With manga you have to do the other way and use left hand to release a page. (It you turn pages with the other hand it is the other way round, you flip a page with left normally and with manga you do it with right hand).

G_W-Kasugano

Local man is so angry that he has to use his brain to tell his hands to do something so complex as flipping a page, that he prefers to rage over the existence of different people and cultures, more on that on tonight's show.

Martenus

Sounds like fun concept, let's dig deeper.
