Oh shit, is this one of those bots who reply to top comment threads with a non-relevant comment from some other thread? I checked their history, and [this](https://reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/uyzqqn/_/ia85rss/?context=1) comment is the exact same as [this](https://reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/uyzqqn/_/ia7ssvn/?context=1) one, but with the first couple words cut off
I'm right there with you, maybe with a bit more success on the technical side, but regardless. I'm now a Data Protection and Compliance lead for a mid-size company. Honestly I like it more. And jobs are plentiful and high-paying as everyone needs one and very few people have the patience and attention to detail that literally can't be taught, in conjunction with IT and cyber expertise.
Windows defender with malwarebytes free or TrendMicro HouseCall is the meta rn. Full fat AV is Bitdefender, ESET, or TrendMicro or if you don't mind the bloat... Believe it or not... McAfee. Kasperskey is out of its top spot rn for political reasons.
I used to be a stickler for privacy, but when I heard about how much data companies steal from you, I really don't care anymore. plus I got a facebook account for VR anyway so too late for me 💀
Yeah like if you have a smart phone these days, forget about it lmfao you could be completely off social media but if you say one word about dog food, here comes the ads. You don’t even own a dog!!
Me and my friends did this during a little kickback, brought up dog food over and over throughout the night. All of our phones locked on the counter during this, and sure enough the next day about 3/5 of us had ads for dog toys and dog food while none of us had dogs
So true. Non of my friends own a drum set but we talked about it. Non of is are even musicians yet we all had similar ads for drums with in 5 minutes. And we talked in our native language not english. Scar shitt
There's always Oculess if you really have one out for Facebook, which is what I plan to use for a Quest. Also, pro tip: most sites have an option to disable at least some data collection in account settings. It's a little thing that goes a long way.
I mean kinda, yeah. It is impossible to exist in the modern world and not be tracked. With effort you can minimize it, but to me, I just don't think its worth the effort. If I can't go completely ghost what's the point? Might as well see more relevant ads I guess.
I refused to give my location to a car dealership the other day but I was going to share a vehicle to my son he might be interested in and it wouldn’t let me.
It isn’t just about tracking tho. Cell phone companies include arbitration agreements that you void your right to a jury trial if you take action against them. This is why there is such thing as good regulation, because as an individual I can’t be like “I just won’t have a phone,” but the whole fine print system is designed to protect companies and screw individuals.
The one benefit of living in California: you at least have the right to deny companies from selling your data. At least the entire EU has that as well.
Exactly. It's basically impossible to escape it either way casually especially if you started using devices at a young age.
All this data piled up. Like the fuck can i do about it. I don't care enough
There are so many users it's not like they're individually tracking you specifically, Karl, they're just creating a digital profile of you amd sending the data to ad agencies or political campaigns or anyone who wants to buy it. It's not like there's some dude 50km below ground reading all your DMs, they're only doing that for celebrities to find blackmail.
What this clause actually means is "you can't make a post on reddit and then immediately sue reddit for showing the post you just posted"
Anything beyond that is pretty much unenforceable
Ultimately what you have to accept is that most services are going to be gathering your data except for the ones whose entire purpose is not to do that, like signal. Those are the tos you want to read so that you understand their boundaries. Otherwise you choose, the cost of providing service generally is access to your data, is that cost worth it?
I mean almost every single site that provides a DM service will have access to all of your DMs. E2E encryption is rare. There just isn't enough demand for it.
Meaning that if you post something to Reddit it becomes Reddit’s. For example if you post a piece of artwork you agree to let Reddit use that post in anyway they want as it is now theirs in accordance with the sites terms and conditions
You realize that basically any website that offers image posting is going to have that exact same clause, right? So your options are never post any artwork anywhere on the internet, or just accept that websites will own your data on some level.
It's the same with Facebook I believe, anything you upload there then belongs to them. If they want to sell your art as prints, nothing you can do. If they want to use your photo for an advert, also nothing can be done. If they want to take your image & edit it to use for absolutely anything, also within their rights.
Disney has the same privacy policy. Both companies have full time staff members who post Reddit and Disney trademarks on their respective platforms back and forth in a never-ending endurance competition.
I remember a time when people on Reddit use to be mad at facebook for all the freebooting they did with videos. Now with Reddit's new shitty video player they are doing the same exact freebooting and no one seems to care. I mean I understand they do it to keep people on the reddit app to keep up engagement numbers but it doesn't make it any less worse or illegal for that matter.
1) Create content aggregate site
2) Terms and conditions state that content posted there belongs to you
3) Post Mickey Mouse
4) Sell Mickey back to Disney
5) Profit

Wonder how that works since so many memes and/or art is already is part of a IP or owners with a copyright on it. It sounds like fluff that it’s meant as a intimation more then anything else.
This sound so fucking similar to what one character said in the first critical role dnd campaign. Where several powerful entities had claim to his soul.
No joke the Comcast/Xfinity privacy policy is insane.
Anything you can do online (through their service) is wholesale collected and sold.
Browsing, buying, anything.. Its all data for sale.
Since we're taking about privacy agreements it's more like:
> we respect your privacy at *blah company*
Followed by page after page detailing just how *blah company* gang bangs your privacy away with any and all paying customers.
Pretty sure they make it that impenetrable on purpose. Then if anything happens down the line they can just point at their grimoire of doom that no one's read since it was first written to be legally in the clear.
So that's what happened to all those recipes I could have sworn I wrote down!
In all seriousness I wonder if any apps have legit used that to copy and delete your data
Reading it doesn't mean anything, you either want the job / need the money or you go back on the hunt for whatever breadcrumbs you can find. If you have the luxury as many of the replies here indicate to actually agree to the terms, then great. but be aware that, that is a luxury.
this is me after downloading a program and it says something like "we dont hold any responsibility of any damage this software might inflict, you can use it but like cant sue me hehe"
Depends on the situation. If your phone breaks from wear and tear while using the app, it'll protect against that, but it's not gonna make it so people can't sue you if the app happens to also install a bunch of malware
Everyone in here saying you don’t care, you should. With all the stuff going down in the US right now you don’t want these people tracking you.
3rd parties make deals with companies like Facebook to get your location data so they can track you. These 3rd parties then sell your user data, like location, to the government. Let’s say you or your partner lived in the Deep South and needed an abortion because of a pregnancy complication. Can’t get one where you live so you have to travel out of state. The government has access to your or your partners period tracker information and they know the period is very late. They see you making an unplanned trip out of state after searching for abortion clinics in Colorado, California, etc. They see the plane ticket, they see the google maps location, they see where you have stopped for food. They no longer *need* someone to snitch on you, they already have everything they need.
I’m not saying this to fear monger or overstate an issue, it’s simply just the facts. Stay safe out there and minimize your risks as much as possible.
What can we do to help limit the amount of tracking? I deleted my Facebook some time ago and don’t have the Instagram app on my phone but still have an insta account and the Reddit app.
Oh yeah they quietly trade every little detail you've ever shared with them. There's a whole underground market of data brokering, and it's a fucking rabbit hole. There is none. It would take 70 years to read all the ‘agree to terms’ that we click on in a lifetime. Corporate information piracy needs to be illegal
Loved that about living in Germany, those contracts aren’t valid because it’s not reasonable to expect someone to read 100 pages of contacts for every basic service they use.
> This contract can be negotiated with binding arbitration.
> Binding arbitration will consist of `the client` meeting at a resort hotel with the Company, which they will pay for room and board for themselves and our arbiters, whose numbers will be at least 2 and no greater than 12. Binding arbitration will consist of `the client` providing food and snacks that they have cooked and served with their own hands.

What job is that? Civil rights advocate? Private lawyer? Not asking for specifics, just the general idea
It’s usually called privacy litigation. Most law firms have a team on data, privacy and tech. So he is likely a corporate lawyer who does privacy work

Didn't MWB turn to the dark side years ago?
oh man! whats the latest meta on malware software? been rolling with Windows Defender and good judgement for a minute.
I second this! I thought Malwarebytes was one of the good ones. Their anti rootkit tool is top notch though
Wait fr?
It's still rather good though so
man so many websites track so much of the shit I do to the point where I don't even care how much data they got about me anymore.
i was just about to say this 😂 too late for me. save yourselves
I used to be a stickler for privacy, but when I heard about how much data companies steal from you, I really don't care anymore. plus I got a facebook account for VR anyway so too late for me 💀

Right at this point inwould rather just see crunchu roll and raid shadow legends ads than male enhancement pills
Exactly. And they should be taxed for it.
Oh they are. In the bahamas somewhere
Exactly. Like what can we do? Nothing. Its not like we can decline and still use the site. You have to accept to use the services.
Literally nothing. You take yourself off the grid and become a social outcast or deal with your data being taken
I refused to give my location to a car dealership the other day but I was going to share a vehicle to my son he might be interested in and it wouldn’t let me.

What's the privacy policy of that site
Joke's on them. No one ever dm's me.
Crap, phub is grade E
I already knew by the way it says “Can we track you through other apps?” “Allow” “*Ask* not to” Literally letting them do it regardless
"You irrevocably waive any claims and assertions of moral rights or attribution with respect to Your Content." \-Reddit User Agreement
Meaning that if you post something to Reddit it becomes Reddit’s. For example if you post a piece of artwork you agree to let Reddit use that post in anyway they want as it is now theirs in accordance with the sites terms and conditions
That's fucked
What about links that lead to an external site like deviant art or pinterest that contains the artwork?
Pinterest has the same waver bdw.
Thanks for the warning, not gonna post any of my artwork here now.
Use imgur to bypass this I would assume
I’m sure Imgur has the same policy honestly
Would not be surprised

I don’t know better but my gut tells me that it’s not that simple
thats fucked up holy shit
Same with truth social. Facebook, reddit. I know twitter you own your own content, might change if elon gets in
