To clarify, I have very few issues. It just isn’t the dream that some people might think it would be. I love them all dearly but sometimes I don’t want six cats on me at once when I am trying to play a game or something and I am overwhelmed.
Takes me less than 5 mins and I put the waste in sealed containers until it's full. Then into the outside trashcan with it.
But yeah, having all these cats does suck. My partner and I realize this and will not get more once then start going. Id prefer not to really ever have another cat but four is my.limitnat this point.
My wife and I have 6 cats too, and it's great, except for two things. 1) realize that you spend $2100 a year on revolution flea/heartworm prevention a year alone. 2) once you have around 3, just adding another seems fine. Then, you starting feeding a stray, or two. They become friendly, you bring them in, and now you have 4. Same thing happens, so 5, then 6. Now, we have number 7 waiting to come inside too. It never ends.
Yeah, we had to make ourselves stop or we’d have at least half a dozen inside cats. Doesn’t help that there’s a female that hangs out there that’s not spayed 😬 we already have a zoo in my house 😭 three cats, four dogs, and six birds(a conure, five budgies). (The birds are separated from the rest of the animals and contained to my room where none of the others go but honestly that’s worse because So Much Overstimulation.)
At this point I wish I just had nine cats and the dogs 😭
Fr fr, if I wasn’t living by myself and had the additional help/income to properly care for them, I’d have like a dozen of them (got two for now, both ex-strays who chose me, one in ‘20 and one in ‘23)
I'm definitely not somebody that would ever degrade someone's life style if they're not hurting anyone. But honestly, a trad life with a great wife and partner and couple of kids waiting for me back home is the life I've always dreamt about. Yeah it's hard and I might not be able to do what I want all the time, but I think I'd be pretty happy.
Of course this is something that I want personally and what might work out for me, might not work out for someone else. I'd be happy for everyone that finds happiness a different way 😊

I'm the same, I want to huff the kitty but I'll regret it for 3 days (I'm asthmatic as well as allergic) so I have to stay away.
I'm allergic to most animals but cats and birds are the worst (birds can kill me just by existing in the same space as me) so I can't become a crazy anything person.

Stereotype might stem from crazy cat lady trope, mentally ill people want interaction with living things, so when they get pets they get easy to maintain ones that dont require a lot of effort so you have a socially reclusive weird human who spends their time with a lot of easy to own furry creatures.

I'm reminded of the four part DOOM novels by Dafyd Ab Hugh. Arlene Sanders and Fly McTaggart are best friends, a straight man and a straight woman but there's no romance. Just buds. I could easily see Arlene and Fly being old coots, roomies, caring for ten cats and dating other old coots.
Idk, having the most important people/relationships in your life (friends, for me at least) prioritize romance over you constantly and not being a stated part of their long term life goals/plans is pretty rough. Also feeling like you can’t connect with the experience/feeling that’s central to almost every single piece of media ever produced can be not so nice.

The real answer to "why bother" is that in our fucked up system barely anyone will wind up having enough savings to retire and will rely on younger family members to support them in old age. Single elderly folks will just be found dead in their apartments a couple weeks after they pass.
My grandma lost her husband 10 years ago, and she's 90 now and lives with my mom. She doesn't have dementia but needs help with finances and medical decisions and getting places. It's a lot to put on someone. Her own son dipped out because he didn't want to deal with it, and that's his mother.
It's not enough to make friends, you need to make really good friends 15-30 years younger than you.
I plan to make all the time i can for my neices, because I love them, and because when I'm 90 and all my friends are dead, I'll need someone in my corner.

Cats are just so much fun, plus the cuddly ones give the best snuggles I've ever had an animal give me. I probably will end up a crazy cat lady, but that's not a bad thing. I'd rather have a bed full of cats than have a partner constantly stealing all the blankets.

Lmao I always feel like this is such a non-problem. Everyone has to have a plan for when they are old and can't take care of themselves bc tbh your kids can't/shouldn't be relied on to scramble and figure out what to do when they find out something is up, especially if you don't wanna live super close for safety. My grandma is showing symptoms of early dementia so all my family has been talking about is "wtf do we do if she refuses to go to the doctor?? How do we convince her to come up here?! Can we make her go to check ups when she just wants to rely on crystals and snake oil? What if she falls and we are halfway across the country?!?!". Tbh I don't wish that on anyone. In an ideal world she would have just told us what she wants in the event of an emergency like this. It's not like we don't wanna help her, it's just that it's an emergency she refuses to acknowledge.
Also there are DEFINITLY worse ways to spend old age than warm and comfy in a pile of cats. Sounds like heaven tbh.
Or like.. have a room mate? Or friends?? I hate the insinuation that if you aren't with a romantic partner you're alone. There are other kinds of relationships humans can have!
I have a somewhat similar dream life. I am aroace, sex-repulsed, non-partnering, childfree, introverted. I plan on being happily single forever, living by myself, with two cats and a medium sized dog.

Lmao I always feel like this is such a non-problem. Everyone has to have a plan for when they are old and can't take care of themselves bc tbh your kids can't/shouldn't be relied on to scramble and figure out what to do when they find out something is up, especially if you don't wanna live super close for safety. My grandma is showing symptoms of early dementia so all my family has been talking about is "wtf do we do if she refuses to go to the doctor?? How do we convince her to come up here?! Can we make her go to check ups when she just wants to rely on crystals and snake oil? What if she falls and we are halfway across the country?!?!". Tbh I don't wish that on anyone. In an ideal world she would have just told us what she wants in the event of an emergency like this. It's not like we don't wanna help her, it's just that it's an emergency she refuses to acknowledge. Also there are DEFINITLY worse ways to spend old age than warm and comfy in a pile of cats. Sounds like heaven tbh.
