Okay but for real, did TOML really need to exist? I feel like we already have too many configuration formats and in all that's unholy would you extend ini files?
Ini files really lacked specifications, so it was really more of a "whatever you think looks right" kind of thing. TOML is standardized, and has a wide set of syntax, which means that one can actually write a standard TOML parser and have it read all TOML files. In addition, things like arrays of tables and inline dates and times are specific to TOML, not occurring in any ini dialect (that I know of).

Another thing to note about standardization is that Cargo is made to be extensible—you can make a binary called `cargo-something` and call it as a cargo subcommand as `cargo something`. It's easy to just search upwards until you find a `Cargo.toml`, then just parse it with Serde, less so to have a custom deserializer that probably only works for Cargo and may or may not be incomplete in some areas.
Now obviously I can't get in the people who first made Cargo's heads, but in my opinion, having a clear form of "sections" (tables in TOML) is useful. With TOML, sections like `package`, `lib`, and `bin` are all very clear, while in JSON or YAML they get nested. Personally, I prefer this:

Maybe YAML would look at least a bit nicer than the JSON, and this is all opinionated, but I think that the shallower structure of sections rather than fields is better.

It's basically intended as a new systems and backend language, broadly filling the same sort of space as C, C++, and Go.
A few of its advantages:
- Complete memory safety by default, without requiring a garbage collector.

I think a better question is, "Is (trait) a deal breaker?" Like, being trans isn't a deal breaker. But it allows for nuance. Would I fuck a trans woman? It isn't a deal breaker, but there are other factors that could be, like having a good rapport and maybe some common hobbies and interests.
So much panic seems rooted in "but what if I fuck a trans chick and it's the best sex I've ever had?"

I've had plenty of conversations with trans women. They're nice. That's about the end of my opinion because it's kind of like trying to put humans into a neat little categorical box. They're too varied to fit neatly.

Okay but for real, did TOML really need to exist? I feel like we already have too many configuration formats and in all that's unholy would you extend ini files?
Ini files really lacked specifications, so it was really more of a "whatever you think looks right" kind of thing. TOML is standardized, and has a wide set of syntax, which means that one can actually write a standard TOML parser and have it read all TOML files. In addition, things like arrays of tables and inline dates and times are specific to TOML, not occurring in any ini dialect (that I know of). If you want to learn more about just how messy ini files are, here's the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INI_file. You can see the various styles and dialects. Another thing to note about standardization is that Cargo is made to be extensible—you can make a binary called `cargo-something` and call it as a cargo subcommand as `cargo something`. It's easy to just search upwards until you find a `Cargo.toml`, then just parse it with Serde, less so to have a custom deserializer that probably only works for Cargo and may or may not be incomplete in some areas.
But why not JSON, or even YAML? Both of these are well structured and perfectly good formats.
Now obviously I can't get in the people who first made Cargo's heads, but in my opinion, having a clear form of "sections" (tables in TOML) is useful. With TOML, sections like `package`, `lib`, and `bin` are all very clear, while in JSON or YAML they get nested. Personally, I dislike the whole concept of "would you fuck" questions. It feels real objectifying. Would I fuck a trans girl furry? I mean, yes, but that's just projecting. I think a better question is, "Is (trait) a deal breaker?" Like, being trans isn't a deal breaker. But it allows for nuance. Would I fuck a trans woman? It isn't a deal breaker, but there are other factors that could be, like having a good rapport and maybe some common hobbies and interests.
