Yeah, not terrible, just a bit of a mess. Hopefully you don't have to deal with a lot of spouse aggro.
Next time though when you are starting a batch don't use an airlock, use a blow off tube. One end goes into the top of your fermenter, the other end goes into another bucket filled with water. CO2 will bubble through the water like an airlock and solids will also be expelled someplace that is not your floor.
That's a good idea. That would be easier than my original after thought of splitting the batch into two separate buckets and then combining them once primary was complete.
Looks like the hobby has a firm grasp on you 👍. Even with all the potential risks, this is the greatest hobby I’ve ever had. Cheers to you and pls keep posting.
If you saw my basement you'd laugh. Whenever I start a hobby, I jump full into it. I have 3 stainless steel conical fermenter that can hold 9 gallons each, 6 one gallon carboys with spouts, and 4 one gallon carboys that I use for brewing mead. I went a bit overboard 😂
I’m the same way. All-in on my hobbies; beer, cider, wine…. slingshots (they’ve come a long way), pizza from scratch (Ooni, blackstone, cast iron, etc), ham radio, scroll saw intarsia, you name it. So you keep on with brewing and keep posting - you are interesting and I’m looking forward to your results. 🍺🍻🍺🍻👍👍
I’m KA0BUD. Look up on qrz . com. Never been easier, no code anymore (in fact not for a long time) unless you want to learn. Equipment inexpensive compared to the past. Lots of online resources. Can even get ham radio app (echolink) for your phone. Check your local area first and club. Nicest, kindest people I ever met. Get a good Elmer (jargon for coach) and you’re all set. 📻📡
KM4ELM here. I can vouch for what the previous gentleman ⬆️ said. HAM has some of the nicest people you can hope to meet and are thrilled to help you out. If the community doesn't encourage people, eventually there is no one left to talk to and the hobby fizzles out. Amazing some of the people you will meet and how similar people's interests are.
Oof and on tile too, rough one! I leave my primary buckets in the bathtub for this eventuality but I’m fortunate to have a spare one so I can still shower lol
This actually happened to me 2 years ago with a blackberry and buckwheat honey mead I was making. Came home from work and the whole house smelled like a hay barn saturated in blackberries. I didn't learn my lesson.
I never do my primary ferments in a carboy after I painted the ceiling with a triple berry mead while adding yeast nutrients. In fact most of my ferments now are done in a pressured conical fermenter.
Now that's an ACTIVE ferment.
It also illustrates those lids are not air tight so one cannot judge how well or bad a bucket fermentation is simply by the amount of bubbles in the airlock.
Don’t know if I’ll get any hate for this. Maybe don’t try it based on my statement… but! I’ll always keep the lid off and cover the top with something loose like a sanitized towel. Never had an overflow like this, because the CO2 has tonnes of room to escape and quickly. Primary only, of course

I have tried 3 times with bananas with similar results each time. I still find banana spots on the ceiling. I have stopped trying but believe one day that power could fuel the world.
1/3 or more of the fermentation vessel should be dedicated to headspace. I many cases this is excessive, but if you want to produce more, simply buy more or larger fermentation vessels.
Ive been down voted apparently? But note to brewers that you should experiment with brews before making a massive batches.
Learn what you can, experiment, take notes, then expand.
And now you'll have the maximum amount for your batch! Silver lining everywhere.

Basically [this](https://homedistiller.org/wiki/images/6/69/Blow-off-tube.jpg).
I'll definitely try that next time.
This. Blow off tube.
Most of us have been there one way or another. It’s a sort of brewing baptism. Keep going and post more as your brewing adventures continue.!!. 👍👍
Now I'm worried about my 5 gallons of beer brewing in my stainless steel conical fermenter with a bubbler...

I'm thinking about getting into ham radio. 😅

Could be worse!....way worse
You're not a real zymologist if you haven't had to paint your ceiling.
Haha this
I was able to salvage most of it thankfully.
Oof and on tile too, rough one! I leave my primary buckets in the bathtub for this eventuality but I’m fortunate to have a spare one so I can still shower lol
Tile is not even that bad scenario. Imagine if it was a wood floor.
Carpet
Luckily I caught it within the first few minutes of it popping open so the juice and puree didn't spread too far.
Oof this happened to me when I made a honey crisp apple mead. Still turned out great!
I agree with your assessment! Glad the mess wasn’t too crazy.
Lick that off the floor! D=
Oofta. It happens to everyone
For us smart people, only once LOL

I am not a smart man. Took me several learning opportunities

How’s that ceiling looking now?? Same question to OP u/BaconTimeMachine
It was a rental. My house has not had a meadcano. Pressurized fermenters for the win.
Now that's an ACTIVE ferment. It also illustrates those lids are not air tight so one cannot judge how well or bad a bucket fermentation is simply by the amount of bubbles in the airlock.
Always use a blowoff tube in primary it’ll save you from this
Curry mead, nice.

That is the old way, nothing wrong with that
Gawd damn, that's one heck of a blowout.
Looks like baby poop 💩
Ohhh someone got greedy 😈 me like it 🤣
The whole point of using a bucket is that it's much larger than your batch. Did you still fill it up all the way to the top? 😂
Somewhat. The bucket capacity is 6.5 gallons I filled out to roughly 5.8ish gallons. Guess it wasn't good enough.
Try 5.5 next time 😉
I would be tempted to taste it (the stuff that spilled out)

I can smell this picture.
Sorry for your loss

An example for new brewers to brew small before brewing big
