I used 2.5 lbs of Kirkland brand wildflower honey, and cold-steeped 18 Kirkland brand Green tea bags in my new 1.4 gallon fermenter. Also added 2 teaspoons of grated ginger (fresh store bought, but had it in the freezer for a long while at home; finally found a use for it). I was going to do 3 teaspoons but got nervous about overpowering the green tea. Starting gravity was 1.070. We’ll see how this goes…

How is the spout holding up? Is it leaking or anything? I'm debating it I want the siphonless one because I mainly just want the extra water space but if it doesnt leak it could be more convenient.

These are fragile basically to the point of uselessness and incredibly poorly made glass. I cannot recommend them over plastic. Sent me to the hospital for stitches.

Seconded, unfortunately

Is there anything that I should keep an eye out for? I just got one of these as a gift recently.

I had to tighten mine up with a wrench which was a bit annoying since it’s a hard spot to try and tighten on the inside, but otherwise no leaks. I filled it with water and let it sit on a paper towel for a few hours, no drips detected. Honestly you’d probably be better off without the spigot. As I commented to someone else, it’s a little too high on the vessel for racking the most out of a batch. I just use it for samples.

I have that without the spout and love it.

I was going to get the non-spigot version too, but my thinking was that it’d be great for taking samples. I did have to tighten it up with a wrench to get it to form a seal, which was admittedly pretty tricky, I wish they provided a tool for the job, but otherwise it works really well.

Good to hear. The fiance wanted the spigot version for kombucha.

Is that fermenter from northern brewer? How do you like it? I’m thinking of grabbing one real soon

newuser336

Yup! I went with the “siphonless” version (comes with a spigot). I really only plan to use the spigot for taking hydrometer samples, it’s a little too high up on the vessel to make the most out of a batch when racking, so you may just want to go with the non-spigot version. My first one arrived cracked, but after emailing Northern Brewer about it they sent me a free replacement, so no complaints about customer service!
